Build<strong>in</strong>g bridges <strong>in</strong> Picker<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Tracey Fidler<br />
The Chronicle<br />
A bridge to the future. At<br />
least th<strong>at</strong>’s wh<strong>at</strong> the City of<br />
Picker<strong>in</strong>g hopes it will be.<br />
The new pedestrian bridge<br />
under construction just east of<br />
Liverpool Road <strong>and</strong> spann<strong>in</strong>g<br />
14 lanes of the 401, will l<strong>in</strong>k<br />
the Picker<strong>in</strong>g GO st<strong>at</strong>ion on<br />
the south side of the 401 to the<br />
newly constructed office tower<br />
on the north side.<br />
<strong>Durham</strong> <strong>and</strong> Centennial<br />
Colleges are also a part of the<br />
project, with a jo<strong>in</strong>t learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
centre <strong>at</strong> the foot of the bridge<br />
scheduled to open <strong>in</strong> the fall of<br />
2012.<br />
The two-storey structure<br />
will fe<strong>at</strong>ure classrooms, student<br />
space, a computer lab <strong>and</strong><br />
offices, <strong>and</strong> will offer eight programs,<br />
four from each college,<br />
as well as cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
courses.<br />
“It will be Picker<strong>in</strong>g’s first<br />
post-secondary presence,” says<br />
Mark Gu<strong>in</strong>to, the public affairs<br />
co-ord<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>or for the City of<br />
Picker<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
The $23 million bridge is<br />
scheduled for completion <strong>in</strong><br />
the spr<strong>in</strong>g of 2012, however pedestrians<br />
<strong>and</strong> cyclists will have<br />
access as early as the end of this<br />
year.<br />
“There will be a soft open<strong>in</strong>g<br />
l<strong>at</strong>e this year or early next year,<br />
but not all the fe<strong>at</strong>ures will be<br />
<strong>in</strong>stalled yet,” says Gu<strong>in</strong>to.<br />
Those “fe<strong>at</strong>ures” will <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
a mesh cover<strong>in</strong>g, envelop<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the entire bridge, <strong>and</strong> LED<br />
lights, which will illum<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>e the<br />
bridge <strong>at</strong> night.<br />
The bridge will also provide<br />
access to much needed additional<br />
park<strong>in</strong>g for the GO st<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
The newly constructed park<strong>in</strong>g<br />
garage <strong>at</strong>tached to the office<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g on the north side<br />
will cre<strong>at</strong>e 500 more park<strong>in</strong>g<br />
spaces.<br />
For over 15 years, the idea<br />
of this bridge has been tossed<br />
back <strong>and</strong> forth.<br />
Gu<strong>in</strong>to says there was “difficulty<br />
ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the political support<br />
to get the [project] off the<br />
ground.”<br />
However, <strong>in</strong> 2006, the Municipal<br />
Property Assessment<br />
Corpor<strong>at</strong>ion (MPAC), which<br />
occupied a build<strong>in</strong>g on the<br />
northeast corner of Liverpool<br />
Road <strong>and</strong> the 401, outgrew its<br />
space.<br />
When MPAC considered<br />
mov<strong>in</strong>g their office out of Picker<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
officials knew they had to<br />
take the steps to keep the bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
So, <strong>in</strong> 2009, Picker<strong>in</strong>g mayor<br />
Dave Ryan announced the<br />
construction of a 10-storey office<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> part of the Picker<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Town Centre’s park<strong>in</strong>g<br />
lot, with MPAC as the anchor<br />
tenant.<br />
Several months after this announcement,<br />
the decision was<br />
swiftly made to also beg<strong>in</strong> construction<br />
on the bridge.<br />
“When the office tower was<br />
secured, it gave the City of Picker<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a w<strong>in</strong>dow of opportunity<br />
to lobby the government,” says<br />
Gu<strong>in</strong>to.<br />
The prov<strong>in</strong>cial <strong>and</strong> federal<br />
governments have given $10<br />
million toward the project, <strong>and</strong><br />
Metrol<strong>in</strong>x, the company beh<strong>in</strong>d<br />
GO Transit, has provided $13<br />
million.<br />
But the bridge is only the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Tracey Fidler<br />
BUILDING A BRIDGE: A pedestrian bridge is <strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong> built east of Liverpool Road.<br />
Gu<strong>in</strong>to says it is a “c<strong>at</strong>alyst”<br />
for further development, with<br />
talks of a hotel or convention<br />
centre down the road.<br />
He also hopes it will <strong>at</strong>tract<br />
people from outside of Picker<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
<strong>and</strong> make the city st<strong>and</strong><br />
out.<br />
“Driv<strong>in</strong>g down the 401, communities<br />
tend to blend together,”<br />
says Gu<strong>in</strong>to. “This will be<br />
our l<strong>and</strong>mark.”<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong>’s just around the corner,<br />
has three houses, <strong>and</strong> is<br />
full of knowledge? —The Oshawa<br />
Community Museum <strong>and</strong><br />
Archives.<br />
The Henry House, the Rob<strong>in</strong>son<br />
House <strong>and</strong> the Guy<br />
House are all part of the museum<br />
<strong>at</strong> Lakeview Park.<br />
The three build<strong>in</strong>gs are used<br />
to br<strong>in</strong>g history to life.<br />
The Henry House is decor<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
as a fully function<strong>in</strong>g Victorian<br />
home <strong>and</strong> d<strong>at</strong>es back to<br />
1849.<br />
The Guy House d<strong>at</strong>es back<br />
to 1835 <strong>and</strong> hosts the adm<strong>in</strong>istr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
part of the museum,<br />
gift shop <strong>and</strong> Verna Conant<br />
Galley—a section devoted to<br />
Oshawa’s <strong>in</strong>dustrial roots.<br />

to 1846, <strong>and</strong> houses the semipermanent<br />
exhibits <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
“Wh<strong>at</strong>’s unique about our<br />
build<strong>in</strong>gs is th<strong>at</strong> they are st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
on their orig<strong>in</strong>al found<strong>at</strong>ions,”<br />
said Melissa Cole, museum<br />
cur<strong>at</strong>or.<br />
Cole has worked as cur<strong>at</strong>or<br />
for 11 years <strong>and</strong> designed the<br />
popular exhibit Mourn<strong>in</strong>g After<br />
about the Victorian customs of<br />
life after de<strong>at</strong>h.<br />
The exhibit ran from May to<br />
November 2009 <strong>and</strong> exceeded<br />
expect<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />
When the constructors widened<br />
Harmony Road <strong>in</strong> the<br />
1950s they discovered graves<br />
from a pioneer gravesite underne<strong>at</strong>h<br />
where they were digg<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
Cole said. The “coff<strong>in</strong> jewelry”<br />
found <strong>in</strong> the graves was used <strong>in</strong><br />
the Mourn<strong>in</strong>g After display.<br />
“I’ve always had a particular<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> gravestones,” executive<br />
director Laura Suchan said.<br />
She has worked <strong>at</strong> the museum<br />
for 22 years <strong>and</strong> cites Mourn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
After as one of her favourite<br />
exhibits.<br />
The museum recently received<br />
a collection of artifacts<br />
from the mortuary program <strong>at</strong><br />
Humber College th<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />
Victorian era items used <strong>in</strong> Canadian<br />
morgues.<br />
Suchan said these pieces <strong>and</strong><br />
new <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion will be <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />
<strong>in</strong> the next Victorian exhibit<br />
hopefully on display <strong>in</strong> 2013.<br />
The museum also offers programs<br />
for children, us<strong>in</strong>g archeology,<br />
wizards <strong>and</strong> pir<strong>at</strong>es<br />
to entice learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
The programs <strong>in</strong>corpor<strong>at</strong>e<br />
crafts, activities <strong>and</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
The museum even offers<br />
birthday parties with programs,<br />
loot bags <strong>and</strong> dress up clothes,<br />
available by request.<br />
Lisa Terech has been the<br />
visitor experience co-ord<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>or<br />
for a year but a volunteer s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
2007 <strong>and</strong> she encourages students<br />
to <strong>in</strong>volve themselves <strong>in</strong><br />
their town’s history.<br />
“If you’re not from the Oshawa<br />
area, it’s nice to learn<br />
about where you live,” Terech<br />
said. She expla<strong>in</strong>s th<strong>at</strong> a lot of<br />
people end up settl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />
town or city where they <strong>at</strong>tended<br />
school.<br />
And if you’re curious about<br />
wh<strong>at</strong> happened to your family,<br />
long lost rel<strong>at</strong>ive or friend, you<br />
can explore the archives.<br />
The archives <strong>in</strong>clude local<br />
history <strong>and</strong> Oshawa’s newspapers<br />
up until 1965, anyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
more recent can be found <strong>at</strong> the<br />
library.<br />
Jennifer Weymark has been<br />
the archivist s<strong>in</strong>ce 2000 <strong>and</strong> if<br />
you’re look<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
on local archival history she<br />
is the one to talk to. Although<br />
“sometimes you just can’t f<strong>in</strong>d<br />
an answer,” she said.<br />
She cares for the collection,<br />
researches <strong>and</strong> makes sure<br />
the museum’s facts are correct.<br />
“I enjoy the research, digg<strong>in</strong>g<br />
thorough <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g new<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs,” Weymark said.<br />
Currently she is work<strong>in</strong>g on<br />
the museum’s onl<strong>in</strong>e exhibits,<br />
both new <strong>and</strong> already exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />
exhibits.<br />
The onl<strong>in</strong>e exhibits are used<br />

people to visit; they can<br />
also be used as a research tool.<br />
The archives cost $5 to view.<br />
Pr<strong>in</strong>tout <strong>and</strong> photocopies are<br />
available from 50 cents to $2.<br />
Archival assistance is $25.<br />
Next year is the 200th anniversary<br />
of the War of 1812 <strong>and</strong><br />
Weymark is design<strong>in</strong>g an onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />
exhibit about the war <strong>and</strong><br />
its impact on <strong>Durham</strong> Region.<br />
Currently Milk Stories, an<br />
exhibit detail<strong>in</strong>g the history of<br />
dairy farmers, occupies part<br />
of the Rob<strong>in</strong>son House, <strong>and</strong><br />
next year a new exhibit will<br />
open about Oshawa’s shipp<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong>dustry, which the staff is excited<br />
about because of the museum’s<br />
loc<strong>at</strong>ion on the harbor.
