He’s not a real boy, he’s a medical toy<br />

“Am I go<strong>in</strong>g to die?” Students<br />

<strong>in</strong> the nurs<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> paramedic<br />

program hear these<br />

words on a regular basis when<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the simul<strong>at</strong>ion lab.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

simul<strong>at</strong>ion program adviser<br />

Marie McEwan, the simul<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

dummies th<strong>at</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>and</strong> paramedic students work<br />

on <strong>in</strong>teract <strong>and</strong> speak back to<br />

them like a real p<strong>at</strong>ient.<br />

Students learn how to deal<br />

with real-life situ<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> get<br />

h<strong>and</strong>s-on experience before <strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

thrown <strong>in</strong>to their field of<br />

work.<br />

By us<strong>in</strong>g simul<strong>at</strong>ion dummies<br />

th<strong>at</strong> can be programmed<br />

to show symptoms like a real<br />

person, students are able to<br />

put themselves <strong>in</strong> real-life<br />

situ<strong>at</strong>ions with p<strong>at</strong>ients th<strong>at</strong><br />

are close to a real person, said<br />

McEwan.<br />

“When we cre<strong>at</strong>e a p<strong>at</strong>ient<br />

they come with a social background,<br />

we cre<strong>at</strong>e a whole life<br />

for them, “ said McEwan. “For<br />

example we have a p<strong>at</strong>ient we<br />

deal with all the time. She has<br />

breast cancer, she’s young with<br />

two small children <strong>and</strong> she’s<br />

married.”<br />

When students enter the<br />

simul<strong>at</strong>ion p<strong>at</strong>ient’s room,<br />

McEwan expla<strong>in</strong>ed th<strong>at</strong> they<br />

don’t see a mannequ<strong>in</strong>, but<br />

an actual p<strong>at</strong>ient they need to<br />

tre<strong>at</strong>.<br />

There will be pictures drawn<br />

by her simul<strong>at</strong>ed children <strong>and</strong><br />

flowers from the husb<strong>and</strong> to<br />

make the room more authentic<br />

<strong>and</strong> realistic.<br />

“Even though you know it<br />

isn’t real, it feels much more<br />

real than any other situ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

I’ve been put <strong>in</strong>,” said <strong>Durham</strong><br />

College nurs<strong>in</strong>g student Rachel<br />

Daize.<br />

“Hav<strong>in</strong>g to check blood pressure<br />

<strong>and</strong> listen for irregularities<br />

“SAY AH”: One of the simul<strong>at</strong>ion dummies <strong>at</strong> <strong>Durham</strong> College waits p<strong>at</strong>iently for a student<br />

to apply a feed<strong>in</strong>g tube for practice.<br />

<strong>in</strong> the heart is much more <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g<br />

than just read<strong>in</strong>g wh<strong>at</strong> to<br />

do out of a textbook.”<br />

McEwan expla<strong>in</strong>ed th<strong>at</strong> the<br />

goal is to cre<strong>at</strong>e a safe learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

environment where students<br />

can experience situ<strong>at</strong>ions th<strong>at</strong><br />

will help them transition from<br />

the educ<strong>at</strong>ional stage <strong>in</strong>to cl<strong>in</strong>ical<br />

placement while stay<strong>in</strong>g<br />

confident <strong>and</strong> competent.<br />

Gett<strong>in</strong>g students to deal<br />

with de<strong>at</strong>h <strong>and</strong> situ<strong>at</strong>ions th<strong>at</strong><br />

could affect them mentally is<br />

a big part of the SIM lab said<br />

McEwan. On rare occasions<br />

professors will set a simul<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

dummy to die even if the student<br />

tre<strong>at</strong>s it properly <strong>and</strong> does<br />

everyth<strong>in</strong>g correctly.<br />

Because many of the professors<br />

have been <strong>in</strong> these k<strong>in</strong>ds<br />

of situ<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>in</strong> reality they are<br />

able to talk to students after<br />

<strong>and</strong> debrief them on how they<br />

are mentally <strong>and</strong> how they feel<br />

about the p<strong>at</strong>ient dy<strong>in</strong>g, expla<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

McEwan.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to primary care<br />

paramedic for the <strong>Durham</strong> Region<br />

Andrew Jenk<strong>in</strong>s, particip<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> the SIM program <strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>Durham</strong> was a huge part of the<br />

type of paramedic he is now.<br />

“As a gradu<strong>at</strong>e of the <strong>Durham</strong><br />

College Paramedic program<br />

I was fortun<strong>at</strong>e enough<br />

to get to practice cl<strong>in</strong>ical skills<br />

on the SimMan p<strong>at</strong>ient simul<strong>at</strong>or,”<br />

said Jenk<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

“Tak<strong>in</strong>g blood pressures,<br />

check<strong>in</strong>g for lung sounds such<br />

as wheezes <strong>and</strong> crackles on the<br />

p<strong>at</strong>ient simul<strong>at</strong>ors played a key<br />

roll <strong>in</strong> prepar<strong>in</strong>g me to be the<br />

paramedic I am today.”<br />

Dr. Berg writes book<br />

on the f<strong>in</strong>ite planet<br />

M<strong>at</strong>t McPhee<br />

The Chronicle<br />

How long can the earth susta<strong>in</strong><br />

with limited resources?<br />

Dr. Peter Berg, <strong>UOIT</strong>’s Associ<strong>at</strong>e<br />

Professor of Physics,<br />

exam<strong>in</strong>es this <strong>and</strong> other rel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

subjects <strong>in</strong> his new selfpublished<br />

book The F<strong>in</strong>ite<br />

Planet: How Resource Scarcity<br />

will affect our Environment,<br />

Economy <strong>and</strong> Energy Supply.<br />

In the preface of The F<strong>in</strong>ite<br />

Planet, Berg expla<strong>in</strong>s th<strong>at</strong> the<br />

book is about the limits of our<br />

planet <strong>and</strong> how physical constra<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />

boundaries for the future<br />

development of the human<br />

race.<br />

He describes <strong>in</strong> his book<br />

how energy supply <strong>and</strong> consumption<br />

are the driv<strong>in</strong>g factors<br />

of human development,<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard of liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> economic<br />

growth.<br />

“As the rule of thumb, the<br />

more energy consumed, the<br />

higher your st<strong>and</strong>ard of liv<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

If energy became scarce, then<br />

the question would be would<br />

we still be an advanced civilized<br />

society,” said Berg.<br />

His <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>at</strong>ion for writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the book stemmed from when<br />

the f<strong>in</strong>ancial crisis started.<br />

“About three years ago, I<br />

was th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g is it really just<br />

the f<strong>in</strong>ancial crisis? And then I<br />

came to the conclusion th<strong>at</strong> it<br />

may be more than th<strong>at</strong>,” Berg<br />

said. “One <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> got<br />

me th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g was extremely<br />

high oil prices.”<br />

When Berg came to Canada<br />

10 years ago, he had read <strong>in</strong><br />

the Vancouver Sun th<strong>at</strong> the average<br />

household <strong>in</strong>come was<br />

somewhere around $54,000.<br />

He had also noticed th<strong>at</strong> the<br />

majority were driv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> new<br />

cars <strong>and</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> extremely<br />

expensive homes.<br />

“I couldn’t make sense of<br />

this. I just thought ‘how is this<br />

possible?’ My n<strong>at</strong>ural conclusion<br />

was th<strong>at</strong> it is all based on<br />

debt, everyth<strong>in</strong>g is f<strong>in</strong>anced.<br />

You f<strong>in</strong>ance your house <strong>and</strong><br />

your car. Debt is the only way<br />

to support th<strong>at</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d of gr<strong>and</strong><br />

old lifestyle. On a gr<strong>and</strong> scale,<br />

almost everyone is <strong>in</strong> debt.”<br />

said Berg.<br />

“There has been a major<br />

concern on clim<strong>at</strong>e change for<br />

the past 20 years <strong>and</strong> lots of<br />

money has flown <strong>in</strong>to research<br />

<strong>and</strong> development. One th<strong>in</strong>g<br />

I am say<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> this book is<br />

maybe this isn’t the only th<strong>in</strong>g<br />

we should focus on, th<strong>at</strong> the<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ability or the survival<br />

of our species just depends on<br />

planet change,” said Berg<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g taught <strong>at</strong> <strong>UOIT</strong> for<br />

seven years, Berg is also the director<br />

of the Energy <strong>and</strong> Environment<br />

program. It is part of<br />

the physics curriculum where<br />

a student takes a set of specialized<br />

courses learn<strong>in</strong>g about<br />

environmental issues from a<br />

scientific or physics perspective<br />

while still develop<strong>in</strong>g an<br />

honours degree <strong>in</strong> physics.<br />

Berg said students learn<br />

about how energy is <strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />

used <strong>in</strong> this world <strong>and</strong> wh<strong>at</strong><br />

the sources of energy are, wh<strong>at</strong><br />

the technologies are <strong>and</strong> wh<strong>at</strong><br />

the l<strong>at</strong>est trends are <strong>in</strong> technology,<br />

<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g b<strong>at</strong>teries<br />

<strong>and</strong> fuels cells.<br />

“While you teach all these<br />

classes you become aware of<br />

issues th<strong>at</strong> you wouldn’t be<br />

aware of if you just followed<br />

the mass media,” he said. “I<br />

don’t know many physicists<br />

who would write on such a<br />

topic, which is a bit outside. I<br />

guess it’s not purely scientific<br />

issues.<br />

“It’s not th<strong>at</strong> I was just concerned<br />

about the environmental<br />

issues. It made me wonder:<br />

How does this whole th<strong>in</strong>g<br />

work? All these good manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

jobs are <strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong> outsourced.<br />

Who’s actually still<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> who is still mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

stuff? And if no one does it,<br />

how can we all live this well?<br />

Many of us can live so well<br />

without actually manufactur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

anyth<strong>in</strong>g, it’s actually an<br />

amaz<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>in</strong>g, isn’t it? So all<br />

of these th<strong>in</strong>gs sort of came together.<br />

And I thought, one day<br />

I have to sit down <strong>and</strong> make<br />

sense of it all, <strong>and</strong> I wrote a<br />

book,”<br />

If there was a particular<br />

group the book is written for,<br />

Berg said it’s written ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />

for the younger gener<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

because the world will change<br />

dram<strong>at</strong>ically <strong>in</strong> their lifetime.<br />

But it’s also targeted to stakeholders<br />

who make decisions<br />

th<strong>at</strong> affect where money flows<br />

<strong>in</strong> our society <strong>and</strong> where it is<br />

<strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong>vested.<br />

hold<strong>in</strong>g his new book The F<strong>in</strong>ite Planet.<br />

Berg’s ma<strong>in</strong> goal is not th<strong>at</strong><br />

he is try<strong>in</strong>g to teach a lesson,<br />

but to make the readers th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

about issues they have never<br />

thought about before. He encourages<br />

the reader to th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

critically about the subjects<br />

explored <strong>in</strong> his book.<br />

As critical as the subject<br />

m<strong>at</strong>ter of the book is, Berg<br />

managed to make the read<strong>in</strong>g<br />

enjoyable for readers <strong>in</strong> a colloquial<br />
