THANKS TO GRANNY: Dan <strong>at</strong>tributes his p<strong>at</strong>ience <strong>and</strong><br />
demeanour to his gr<strong>and</strong>mother, who taught him many life<br />
lessons through music <strong>and</strong> food.<br />
As a boy, it’s unlikely th<strong>at</strong><br />
Dan Walters, practicum coord<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>or<br />
for <strong>UOIT</strong>’s Faculty of<br />
Social Science <strong>and</strong> Humanities<br />
would have understood impact<br />
a heap<strong>in</strong>g spoonful of tuna salad<br />
would have on his life.<br />
His gr<strong>and</strong>mother’s lesson<br />
taught him you can have too<br />
much of a good th<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
A sociology gradu<strong>at</strong>e from<br />
McMaster University, Walters<br />
embraces the knowledge <strong>and</strong><br />
life experience he has acquired<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce gradu<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> his teach<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />
refus<strong>in</strong>g to use irrelevant<br />
m<strong>at</strong>erial with no real-life counterpart.<br />
“I love teach<strong>in</strong>g,” said Walters,<br />
who recently won the<br />
2011-2012 Cupples Cup Award<br />
for his ‘energy, enthusiasm,<br />
<strong>and</strong> high social <strong>in</strong>volvement’<br />
<strong>in</strong> the Canadian Associ<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />
Career Educ<strong>at</strong>ors <strong>and</strong> Employees<br />
for this year.<br />
Walters career allows him<br />
to blend roles with<strong>in</strong> the educ<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
field with roles with<strong>in</strong><br />
the community, which he enjoys.<br />
He has always been an active<br />
member of the community <strong>and</strong><br />
a huge fan of volunteerism, <strong>and</strong><br />
promotes the same engagement<br />
for students.<br />
“I th<strong>in</strong>k if students simply<br />
focus on academics, they are<br />
really short chang<strong>in</strong>g themselves,”<br />
said Walters, recall<strong>in</strong>g<br />
l<strong>at</strong>er the challenges he faced<br />
when exit<strong>in</strong>g university <strong>and</strong> realiz<strong>in</strong>g<br />
th<strong>at</strong> the piece of paper<br />
<strong>in</strong> his h<strong>and</strong> wasn’t a “guarantee<br />
to gre<strong>at</strong> th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> life.”<br />
It was Walters <strong>in</strong>volvement<br />
<strong>in</strong> the <strong>UOIT</strong> community <strong>and</strong> his<br />
extra curricular <strong>in</strong>volvements<br />
through his humanitarian activities<br />
th<strong>at</strong> led him to the w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of the 2011-2012 Cupples<br />
Cup Award.<br />
Walters was the host of the<br />
2009 Songs Revealed competition<br />
for <strong>Durham</strong> College where<br />
he now serves as a Music Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
Management professor,<br />
was the chair of <strong>UOIT</strong>’s Accessibility<br />
Committee <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues<br />
to be an advoc<strong>at</strong>e for accessibility<br />
with<strong>in</strong> the community,<br />
worked with the Let Them Be<br />
Kids Coalition to build a playground<br />
<strong>at</strong> Oshawa’s Radio<br />
Park, works with people who<br />
have special needs, <strong>and</strong> works<br />
hard on his music career as<br />
well.<br />
“I get to be amphibious,”<br />
said Walters who loves th<strong>at</strong><br />
r<strong>at</strong>her than <strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong> stuck <strong>in</strong> a<br />
classroom all the time he is able<br />
to network <strong>in</strong> the community<br />
<strong>and</strong> promote the <strong>in</strong>tegr<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />
<strong>UOIT</strong> <strong>in</strong> downtown Oshawa.<br />
His accomplishments <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>volvement go back to his<br />
Granny, who he said was the<br />
most <strong>in</strong>fluential person <strong>in</strong> his<br />
life.<br />
Walters, who was enthusiastic<br />
about music as a child with<br />
his “st<strong>in</strong>ky, old records,” spent<br />
much of his time play<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
organ with his gr<strong>and</strong>mother.<br />
He recalls th<strong>at</strong> while others<br />
were puzzled by his eccentric,<br />
troublesome days as a hyper,<br />
young boy, his gr<strong>and</strong>mother<br />
embraced it.<br />
She taught him to play songs<br />
by Buddy Holly, one of his heroes.<br />
At first, when he had a<br />
turn to play the keys he would<br />
smash all the keys <strong>at</strong> once as<br />
many children do – open fisted<br />
<strong>and</strong> eager r<strong>at</strong>her than p<strong>at</strong>ient<br />
<strong>and</strong> careful.<br />
It was when his gr<strong>and</strong>mother<br />
shoved a pile of tuna salad <strong>in</strong><br />
her mouth th<strong>at</strong> he learnt push<strong>in</strong>g<br />
all of the keys <strong>at</strong> once wasn’t<br />
appropri<strong>at</strong>e.<br />
He remembers her shov<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the unmanageable forkful of<br />
salad <strong>in</strong>to her mouth <strong>and</strong> realiz<strong>in</strong>g<br />
th<strong>at</strong> she was teach<strong>in</strong>g him<br />
th<strong>at</strong> too much was not necessarily<br />
a good th<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Walters says th<strong>at</strong> he keeps<br />
go<strong>in</strong>g back to th<strong>at</strong> day with his<br />
gr<strong>and</strong>mother who has s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
passed, <strong>and</strong> adds th<strong>at</strong> his educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
has had the same last<strong>in</strong>g<br />
effect.<br />

Phase 3 of <strong>Durham</strong><br />
College’s <strong>Whitby</strong> campus<br />
is break<strong>in</strong>g ground <strong>in</strong> a<br />
little over two weeks from<br />
now. The new phase will<br />
add a facility for the new<br />
Hospitality <strong>and</strong> Cul<strong>in</strong>ary<br />
programs, <strong>and</strong> will br<strong>in</strong>g<br />
roughly 950 more students<br />
to the campus.<br />
On top of this it will<br />
provide a full-service restaurant<br />
<strong>and</strong> lounge <strong>and</strong><br />
offer meet<strong>in</strong>g space for<br />
students study<strong>in</strong>g cul<strong>in</strong>ary<br />
arts, food sciences, safety,<br />
design <strong>and</strong> other tourismrel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
topics. It will be loc<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
on the southern end<br />
of campus.<br />
One of the biggest<br />
changes th<strong>at</strong> the new phase<br />
will br<strong>in</strong>g to the campus is<br />
a more equal gender r<strong>at</strong>io,<br />
which has been dom<strong>in</strong>antly<br />
male up until now.<br />
Darr<strong>in</strong> Caron, the Dean<br />
of the <strong>Whitby</strong> campus, is<br />
hopeful th<strong>at</strong> the gender r<strong>at</strong>io<br />
will even out <strong>and</strong> make<br />
the campus more diverse.<br />
“With a more even split<br />
between men <strong>and</strong> women,<br />
the campus will certa<strong>in</strong>ly<br />
feel more diverse <strong>and</strong> welcom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for our female students.”<br />
The construction should<br />
be complete by the fall semester<br />
of 2012.<br />
