This year the row<strong>in</strong>g team set a<br />
<strong>UOIT</strong> record for <strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong> the first<br />
sports team from the school to<br />
compete <strong>at</strong> the n<strong>at</strong>ional level.<br />
“I’ve always been <strong>in</strong>to<br />
sports. In high school I played<br />
volleyball <strong>and</strong> soccer for all<br />
four years. When I came to<br />
school it wasn’t the first th<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on my m<strong>in</strong>d, but about halfway<br />
through my first year one<br />
of my friends <strong>in</strong>troduced me to<br />
row<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> the school <strong>and</strong> I have<br />
been hooked ever s<strong>in</strong>ce,” said<br />
Attwood who is capta<strong>in</strong> of the<br />

She particip<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> her first<br />

Ken Babcock, the Athletic<br />
Director for both <strong>UOIT</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

“Not only is she a varsity<br />

is also a student <strong>at</strong> the university<br />
<strong>and</strong> a valued member of<br />
our part-time staff here <strong>at</strong> the<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g another fantastic<br />
season with the men’s<br />
baseball team <strong>Durham</strong> College,<br />
Sam Dempster has been<br />
awarded the European Baseball<br />
Coaches Associ<strong>at</strong>ion Career<br />
Achievement Award.<br />
Dempster is also head<br />
coach of the Gre<strong>at</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong><br />
baseball team, <strong>and</strong> is <strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
recognized for his work both<br />
with Team Gre<strong>at</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
the <strong>Durham</strong> Lords.<br />
Lead<strong>in</strong>g Gre<strong>at</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong> to an<br />
8-6 victory over Israel July 27,<br />
Dempster helped secure their<br />
place as the 2012 European<br />
championships, Dempster returned<br />
to Canada to coach the<br />
men’s baseball program <strong>at</strong> the<br />
college.<br />
In 19 years with the Lords,<br />
Dempster has only had one<br />
los<strong>in</strong>g season, rack<strong>in</strong>g up<br />
seven CIBA Ontario championships,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g this year’s<br />
w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g effort. In addition to<br />
his work with the college <strong>and</strong><br />
Team Gre<strong>at</strong> Brita<strong>in</strong>, Dempster<br />
is an associ<strong>at</strong>e scout for<br />
the Milwaukee Brewers <strong>in</strong><br />
Major League Baseball.<br />
Dempster hopes he will be<br />
arriv<strong>in</strong>g back <strong>at</strong> the college<br />
next fall with another European<br />
Championships medal <strong>and</strong><br />
another CIBA w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g team.<br />
does a lot of beh<strong>in</strong>d-the-scenes<br />
stuff rel<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g to row<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
she is very active <strong>in</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the row<strong>in</strong>g program. Christie’s<br />
contributions on all of those<br />
levels have been very impressive,<br />
she’s always there <strong>at</strong> every<br />
event will<strong>in</strong>g to help out,<br />
she’s <strong>at</strong> other events th<strong>at</strong> aren’t<br />
her own events will<strong>in</strong>g to help<br />
out <strong>and</strong> she’s a real pleasure to<br />
have work<strong>in</strong>g for us as a student,”<br />
said Babcock.<br />
Once row<strong>in</strong>g is over Attwood<br />
does get to have a little fun.<br />
“Dur<strong>in</strong>g the row<strong>in</strong>g season we<br />
(the team) don’t get to go out to<br />
bars <strong>and</strong> party <strong>and</strong> we’re very,<br />
very focused. To me I th<strong>in</strong>k<br />
you gotta do a little bit of everyth<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
If you go 100 per cent<br />
row<strong>in</strong>g you don’t really focus<br />
on school <strong>and</strong> if you go 100 per<br />
cent school you lose a little of<br />
the fun part of university. You<br />
need to prioritize --- school<br />
comes first, row<strong>in</strong>g comes second<br />
<strong>and</strong> then if I have time to<br />
go out on a Thursday night awesome,<br />
<strong>and</strong> if I don’t, I don’t.”<br />
Attwood has also ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
a part-time job as a front<br />
desk clerk <strong>at</strong> the campus recre<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
centre on campus for the<br />
last four years.<br />
“Luckily for me the rec centre<br />
is an <strong>easy</strong> place to work. My<br />
bosses are gre<strong>at</strong>, they underst<strong>and</strong><br />
th<strong>at</strong> I row <strong>and</strong> let me pick<br />
my shifts so I can work it <strong>in</strong>to<br />

Lords volleyball player Dave<br />
McMann became the team’s<br />
all-time scor<strong>in</strong>g leader on<br />
Nov .19 as the Lords won 3-0<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st Boreal.<br />
McMann recorded six po<strong>in</strong>ts<br />
<strong>and</strong> five blocks <strong>in</strong> the game,<br />
br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g his career totals to 610<br />
<strong>and</strong> 148 respectively.<br />
“Dave is an outst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
player,” said Lords coach Andrew<br />
H<strong>in</strong>chey. “Middles <strong>in</strong> this<br />
my schedule,” she said. “Work<br />
for me has never been a priority.<br />
Obviously I need to work because<br />
I need to pay for school,<br />
but it ends up fitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to my<br />
schedule really well. If I had<br />
any other job I don’t know if I<br />
would be able to do it.”<br />
Michelle Roberts is one of<br />
Attwood’s bosses <strong>at</strong> the CRWC.<br />
“She’s awesome! She takes on a<br />
leadership role, she’s very confident<br />
<strong>in</strong> wh<strong>at</strong> she does, she’ll<br />
go the extra mile for the client<br />
<strong>and</strong> she takes time to ask questions<br />
<strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d out the <strong>in</strong>form<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
she needs to do her job effectively.”<br />
Wh<strong>at</strong> isn’t lost on Attwood is<br />
school; it has always been her<br />
number one. “In my first <strong>and</strong><br />
second year I wasn’t an honour<br />
roll student, but I did get good<br />
grades, high 70s. It was really<br />
l<strong>at</strong>er on <strong>in</strong> my program when I<br />
started to push my grades higher,<br />
for a post-gradu<strong>at</strong>e degree<br />
<strong>in</strong> my program you need really<br />
high grades to get <strong>in</strong>to the programs.<br />
“At this po<strong>in</strong>t I’m not go<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to pursue a gradu<strong>at</strong>e (degree),<br />
you know I have been <strong>in</strong> school<br />
for so long it will just be nice to<br />
take a break from it all,” said<br />
Attwood.<br />
But Attwood, who has been<br />
<strong>in</strong> post-secondary school for<br />
the last five years, says com<strong>in</strong>g<br />
back to school isn’t off the<br />
table.<br />
She was supposed to gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />
last year, but decided to<br />
take more classes <strong>and</strong> further<br />
her educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
She said one of the proudest<br />
moments of her academic<br />
career was carry<strong>in</strong>g the banner<br />
for her faculty last year when<br />
she was supposed to gradu<strong>at</strong>e.<br />
“It’s really special because<br />
usually only people who are<br />
gradu<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g carry the banner,<br />
but the fact th<strong>at</strong> they chose me,<br />
someone who wasn’t gradu<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
really stuck to me,” Attwood<br />
said.<br />
But for now she wants to get<br />
a job <strong>and</strong> maybe work <strong>in</strong> sports,<br />
an area she is quite familiar<br />
with.<br />
McMann spikes his<br />
way to the leaderboard<br />
game do not get enough recognition<br />
because their position<br />
is the hardest position to play.<br />
Dave works hard every practice<br />
<strong>and</strong> his hard work really started<br />
to pay off last year.”<br />
McMann was not the lead<strong>in</strong>g<br />
scorer <strong>in</strong> the game, however;<br />
Jeremy Hoekstra <strong>and</strong> Jordan<br />
McFarlane scored 9 po<strong>in</strong>ts<br />
each.<br />
The Lords returned home<br />
on Thursday, Nov. 24 aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
Trent.
