Kielburger<br />
<strong>in</strong>spires youth<br />
of <strong>Durham</strong><br />
Hillary Di Menna<br />
The Chronicle<br />
The sudden quiet <strong>in</strong> S<strong>in</strong>clair<br />
Secondary School’s cafeteria<br />
was noted immedi<strong>at</strong>ely when a<br />
Janet Edwards, super<strong>in</strong>tendant<br />
of the <strong>Durham</strong> District School<br />
Board, approached the microphone.<br />
Craig Kielburger, the speaker<br />
of the 20 th annual Parents as<br />
Partners conference, had arrived.<br />
This year was the first <strong>in</strong><br />
the event’s history where children<br />
aged 12 <strong>and</strong> over could <strong>at</strong>tend.<br />
“A special thank you to the<br />
students who woke up early on<br />
a S<strong>at</strong>urday,” Kielburger said<br />
with a smile.<br />
He comm<strong>and</strong>ed the stage<br />
with anim<strong>at</strong>ed movement <strong>and</strong><br />
exagger<strong>at</strong>ed enunci<strong>at</strong>ion, a<br />
long way from his youth where<br />
he struggled to overcome a<br />
speech impediment.<br />
Before shar<strong>in</strong>g his thoughts<br />
on rais<strong>in</strong>g socially responsible<br />
children, echo<strong>in</strong>g much of wh<strong>at</strong><br />
was said <strong>in</strong> a book he co-wrote<br />
with his brother, The World<br />
Needs Your Kid: Rais<strong>in</strong>g Children<br />
Who Care, he made sure<br />
to thank “those provid<strong>in</strong>g our<br />
children with an educ<strong>at</strong>ion.”<br />
He noted both his parents, both<br />
sets of aunts <strong>and</strong> uncles <strong>and</strong> all<br />
his cous<strong>in</strong>s but one is a teacher.<br />
The one cous<strong>in</strong> pursued a career<br />
<strong>in</strong> IT.<br />
Hav<strong>in</strong>g founded Free the<br />
Children <strong>at</strong> the age of 12, Kielburger<br />
knows first h<strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> a<br />
child can make a positive impact.<br />
“Don’t believe kids turn<br />
18 <strong>and</strong> magically develop a social<br />
conscience,” he warned.<br />
Instead of forc<strong>in</strong>g our children<br />
to complete 40 hours of<br />
m<strong>and</strong><strong>at</strong>ory community service<br />
or cre<strong>at</strong>e CVs for junior k<strong>in</strong>dergarten,<br />
he suggested encourag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the talents <strong>in</strong> children, be<br />
they the ability to make people<br />
laugh or <strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong> computer savvy.<br />
In fact, he said, a 10-year-old<br />
co-op student who had been<br />
kicked out of previous placements<br />
due to reported behavioural<br />
problems does computer<br />
programm<strong>in</strong>g for Free the Children.<br />
Kielburger encourages<br />
wh<strong>at</strong> he calls the three Cs: compassion,<br />
courage <strong>and</strong> community.<br />
These are referenced <strong>in</strong> his<br />
books The World Needs Your<br />
Kid, <strong>and</strong> Me to We. He spoke of<br />
see<strong>in</strong>g bumper stickers say<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
“My kid is on the honour role”<br />
but none say<strong>in</strong>g, “My child is<br />
happy” or “My child is a concerned<br />
citizen.”<br />
The 14 th Dalai Lama told<br />
Kielburger, “We’re rais<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
gener<strong>at</strong>ion of passive byst<strong>and</strong>ers.”<br />
He asked the audience,<br />
“How do you expose [children]<br />
to the violence <strong>and</strong> suffer<strong>in</strong>g of<br />
the world? How do you start<br />
the convers<strong>at</strong>ion?” In a world<br />
where adults experience donor<br />
f<strong>at</strong>igue, he shared these concerns<br />
with Archbishop Desmond<br />
Tutu. “College boy,” Tutu<br />
said, “wh<strong>at</strong> do they teach you?”<br />
He went on th<strong>at</strong> God’s to-do<br />
list arrives <strong>at</strong> our doors <strong>in</strong> the<br />
form of the daily newspaper. It<br />
was when flipp<strong>in</strong>g through the<br />
pages of the newspaper, look<strong>in</strong>g<br />
for the comics when Kielburger<br />
stopped to read about a<br />
12-year-old boy, the same age<br />
has him, who was murdered<br />
after speak<strong>in</strong>g out aga<strong>in</strong>st child<br />
labour, hav<strong>in</strong>g gone through<br />
the horrific ordeal himself. This<br />
is wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong>spired Kielburger to<br />
found Free the Children with 11<br />
classm<strong>at</strong>es. The orig<strong>in</strong>al group<br />
name was The Group of 12 12<br />
year Olds, until one member<br />
turned 13 weeks l<strong>at</strong>er.<br />
Through research he learned<br />
children want to be famous <strong>in</strong><br />
order to help issues such as<br />
poverty <strong>and</strong> environmental<br />
change. He put photos of the<br />
Parliament build<strong>in</strong>g, Barack<br />
Hillary Di Menna<br />
CRAIG KIELBURGER: Kielburger spoke <strong>at</strong> the 20th annual<br />
Parents as Partners conference <strong>in</strong> <strong>Whitby</strong><br />
Obama, Brad Pitt <strong>and</strong> Angel<strong>in</strong>a<br />
Jolie <strong>and</strong> Bill G<strong>at</strong>es on an overhead<br />
beh<strong>in</strong>d him as said people<br />
th<strong>in</strong>k they need to be wealthy to<br />
make a difference. This is not<br />
so, he reassured.<br />
Wh<strong>at</strong> adults can do is lead<br />
by example, he said. They can<br />
go through the paper with their<br />
children, discuss issues they<br />
encountered over family d<strong>in</strong>ner.<br />
He shared memories of<br />
his childhood, when he <strong>and</strong> his<br />
brother would go to Toronto<br />
with their mother. Though they<br />
were excited to visit the E<strong>at</strong>on<br />
Centre, far from their Thornhill<br />
home, their mother would stop<br />
to spare some change for the<br />
homeless. If they grew imp<strong>at</strong>ient<br />
or tried to rush her along,<br />
she would br<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong> to a<br />
small convers<strong>at</strong>ion with the <strong>in</strong>dividual.<br />
She would ask a simple<br />
question like, “May I have<br />
your name?”<br />
The brothers l<strong>at</strong>er learned<br />
she did this half out of k<strong>in</strong>dness,<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g experienced <strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
homeless herself as a child,<br />
shar<strong>in</strong>g a tent with her family,<br />
<strong>and</strong> half to guide her children.<br />
They l<strong>at</strong>er realized she made a<br />
po<strong>in</strong>t of br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g extra change<br />
on such excursions.<br />
“We [as Canadians] are<br />
more than Timbits, hockey <strong>and</strong><br />
beer,” he said to the audience.<br />
L<strong>at</strong>er <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>terview with The<br />
Chronicle, he said, “There is a<br />
gre<strong>at</strong> sense of idealism <strong>in</strong> young<br />
people.” He remembers as a<br />
child <strong>in</strong> school <strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong> pushed<br />
<strong>in</strong>to lockers, because sav<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
world, along with glee clubs,<br />
was the lamest th<strong>in</strong>g. Nowadays,<br />
he joked, “the coolest<br />
th<strong>in</strong>g is to change the world,<br />
<strong>and</strong> glee clubs.”<br />
“There will always be the<br />
voice of cynics,” Kielburger acknowledged<br />
but he encouraged<br />
young people to ga<strong>in</strong> credibility<br />
through experience <strong>and</strong><br />
research. He himself went to<br />
South Asia to witness child labour<br />
conditions <strong>in</strong> order to ga<strong>in</strong><br />
first-h<strong>and</strong> knowledge.<br />
The packed ACC for We Day<br />
illustr<strong>at</strong>e the compassion <strong>and</strong><br />
solidarity <strong>in</strong> today’s youth.<br />
“The only place you will f<strong>in</strong>d<br />
Just<strong>in</strong> Bieber <strong>and</strong> the Dalai<br />
Lama talk<strong>in</strong>g social issues.” His<br />
advice, “Knowledge is power.”<br />
This sentence was reiter<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
many times throughout the <strong>in</strong>terview.<br />
He wants children to<br />
not only see an issue, but to respond<br />
to it.<br />
<strong>UOIT</strong><br />
loss of<br />
staff no<br />

The Chronicle<br />
<strong>UOIT</strong> has begun the<br />
search for professors <strong>in</strong> the<br />
faculty of Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> Inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
Technology.<br />
After los<strong>in</strong>g four professors<br />
to other <strong>in</strong>stitutions<br />
worldwide, the university<br />
rema<strong>in</strong>s optimistic about<br />
the change <strong>and</strong> assures<br />
students th<strong>at</strong> they will still<br />
receive the same high st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />
of educ<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
Professors Raymond<br />
Cox, Trip<strong>at</strong> Gill, Jill Lei <strong>and</strong><br />
Suhaib Riaz each left <strong>UOIT</strong><br />
with<strong>in</strong> the last two years to<br />
work <strong>at</strong> other <strong>in</strong>stitutions,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g UNBC, Wilfrid<br />
Laurier, University of Melbourne<br />
<strong>and</strong> the University<br />
of Massachusetts.<br />
Pamela Ritchie, dean of<br />
the Bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> IT faculty<br />
of which the professors<br />
were a part, says <strong>UOIT</strong><br />
has always been about its<br />
people.<br />
“We all reaped benefits<br />
while they were here but<br />
life’s reality is th<strong>at</strong> family<br />
comes first,” Ritchie said.<br />
“Be<strong>in</strong>g as mobile as they<br />
are <strong>in</strong> their fields, you’re<br />
go<strong>in</strong>g to have people mov<strong>in</strong>g<br />
around. We encourage<br />
them <strong>and</strong> help them<br />
<strong>and</strong> make sure everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
works as best it can for everybody.”<br />
With the exception of<br />
Trip<strong>at</strong> Gill, who was selected<br />
to be a tier one Canada<br />
research chair, professors<br />
Cox, Lei <strong>and</strong> Riaz left to be<br />
with their spouses or families<br />
pursu<strong>in</strong>g their own<br />
academic careers.<br />
“F<strong>in</strong>ance faculty are<br />
<strong>in</strong>credibly mobile. There<br />
are few of them around so<br />
there’s always a position<br />
open for a good f<strong>in</strong>ance<br />
person,” Ritchie said.<br />
The faculty of Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
<strong>and</strong> IT rema<strong>in</strong>s optimistic<br />
about its potential new<br />
staff <strong>and</strong> each c<strong>and</strong>id<strong>at</strong>e<br />
must go through a meticulous<br />
hir<strong>in</strong>g process th<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />
a formal <strong>in</strong>terview<br />
along with a present<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
on course m<strong>at</strong>erial <strong>in</strong> front<br />
of students.<br />
This process is repe<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
for each course.<br />
“Th<strong>at</strong> process is an <strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>or<br />
of the quality of our<br />
faculty <strong>and</strong> of the quality<br />
we go out to look for,”<br />
Ritchie said.
