Down With Webster returns<br />

Kait Tarrant<br />

The Chronicle<br />

It had been two years s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

Toronto-based b<strong>and</strong> Down<br />

With Webster released an album,<br />

<strong>and</strong> fans have been p<strong>at</strong>iently<br />

wait<strong>in</strong>g for their new<br />

music to hit the airwaves.<br />

With tracks She’s Dope <strong>and</strong><br />

Big Wheels grac<strong>in</strong>g the radio<br />

<strong>and</strong> music TV st<strong>at</strong>ions, fans had<br />

someth<strong>in</strong>g to taste before Time<br />

to W<strong>in</strong> Volume II officially hit<br />

the shelves November, 1st.<br />

And It was well worth the<br />

two-year wait.<br />

The album was orig<strong>in</strong>ally<br />

set to be the second of two<br />

seven-track m<strong>in</strong>i albums, as<br />

an <strong>at</strong>tempt to get as much of<br />

their music as possible out <strong>in</strong> a<br />

shorter time frame.<br />

But with the surprise gre<strong>at</strong><br />

success of Time to W<strong>in</strong> Volume<br />

I, the b<strong>and</strong>s orig<strong>in</strong>al idea was<br />

put on the back burner due to<br />

multiple video shoots <strong>and</strong> upcom<strong>in</strong>g<br />

tours.<br />

After the physical release of<br />

the b<strong>and</strong>’s sophomore album,<br />

it became the sixth most purchased<br />

album <strong>at</strong> HMVs Canada-wide<br />

by the end of its first<br />

week, <strong>and</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce then jumped<br />

to #9 on the Canadian album<br />

charts.<br />

And for good reason. With<br />

bigger be<strong>at</strong>s, stronger guitar<br />

riffs <strong>and</strong> drums, the b<strong>and</strong> has<br />

carefully crafted their best album<br />

yet.<br />

Collabor<strong>at</strong>ions with hip-hop<br />

guru Boi-1da on tracks Professional<br />

<strong>and</strong> I Want it All, have<br />

helped Down With Webster<br />

establish a new sound. Both<br />

songs are guitar driven with excellent<br />

be<strong>at</strong>s <strong>and</strong> vocals.<br />

A sound th<strong>at</strong> one could hope<br />

will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to stay with the<br />

b<strong>and</strong>.<br />

Also, a noticeable collabor<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

on the album is th<strong>at</strong> with<br />

electro hop quartet, Far East<br />

Movement on the track Work.<br />

The two b<strong>and</strong>s mesh well lyrically<br />

<strong>and</strong> musically on the hit<br />

song.<br />

The album shows gre<strong>at</strong><br />

m<strong>at</strong>urity <strong>and</strong> growth from<br />

the Juno-nom<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ed group,<br />

with heavy hitt<strong>in</strong>g tracks like<br />

White Flags <strong>and</strong> Star<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> the<br />

Be<strong>at</strong> box<strong>in</strong>g lives <strong>in</strong> Toronto<br />

Sun you can feel the emotion<br />

through the lyrics.<br />

Sure, there are classic Down<br />

With Webster songs about girls<br />

with a pop sound, but their<br />

growth is evident, both sound<br />

<strong>and</strong> lyrically.<br />

The b<strong>and</strong> has clearly spent<br />

more time <strong>in</strong>corpor<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g guitar<br />

<strong>and</strong> keys on this album compared<br />

to their last.<br />

All songs are extremely well<br />

written <strong>and</strong> executed for their<br />

first full-length album.<br />

It’s an album I honestly can<br />

say I can’t get enough of.<br />

The second annual Canadian<br />

be<strong>at</strong> box<strong>in</strong>g championships<br />

were held <strong>at</strong> the Mod Club <strong>in</strong><br />

Toronto S<strong>at</strong>urday, Nov. 12.<br />

Many b<strong>at</strong>tle rappers, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

former <strong>Durham</strong> College advertis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

student Rich PoRich<br />

Moss from K<strong>in</strong>g of the Dot were<br />

there to support their fellow<br />

Canadian artists.<br />

“I was go<strong>in</strong>g buck wild,” said<br />

PoRich. “ There was so much<br />

Canadian talent <strong>in</strong> the build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

th<strong>at</strong> night.”<br />

Last year’s be<strong>at</strong> box<strong>in</strong>g<br />

champion from Toronto, KRN-<br />

FX (pronounced Korean FX)<br />

was compet<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong> as a heavy<br />

favourite to w<strong>in</strong> the tournament,<br />

expla<strong>in</strong>ed PoRich.<br />

His opponent <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>als<br />

was another crowd favourite,<br />

Scott Jackson. Both of these<br />

be<strong>at</strong> boxers have received <strong>in</strong>tern<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

praise for their own<br />

TV commercials, accord<strong>in</strong>g to a<br />

fan <strong>in</strong> the crowd, Kevy Loe.<br />

With KRNFX <strong>in</strong> a Taco Bell<br />

commercial <strong>and</strong> Scott Jackson<br />

<strong>in</strong> the be<strong>at</strong> box<strong>in</strong>g owl commercial<br />

for Telus wireless, PoRich<br />

said there was no wonder why<br />

these two were the favourites to<br />

w<strong>in</strong>.<br />

“The heavy favourites go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>to the f<strong>in</strong>als th<strong>at</strong> night<br />

were last year’s w<strong>in</strong>ner KRN-<br />

FX, <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>alist Scott Jackson,<br />

both known from Toronto’s hip<br />

hop scene as phenoms,” said<br />

PoRich.<br />

In a rem<strong>at</strong>ch from last year’s<br />

be<strong>at</strong> box<strong>in</strong>g championship,<br />

KRNFX <strong>and</strong> Scott Jackson put<br />

on quite a show for the crowd,<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g to PoRich. He said<br />

the crowd seemed to be focused<br />

solely on the two artists.<br />

At the end of the night it was<br />

KRNFX who won top honours<br />

<strong>and</strong> aga<strong>in</strong> walked away as the<br />

Canadian be<strong>at</strong> box<strong>in</strong>g champion<br />

for the second year <strong>in</strong> a row<br />

even though some people from<br />

the crowd, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g PoRich,<br />

thought th<strong>at</strong> Scott Jackson had<br />

bested his Canadian opponent.<br />

“I felt like Scott Jackson<br />

should have been the victor,”<br />

said PoRich. “ Better performance<br />

<strong>and</strong> it also seemed like I<br />

had seen KRNFX’s third round<br />

before.<br />

It seemed th<strong>at</strong> Scott had as<br />

well as he was mimick<strong>in</strong>g every<br />

movement KRNFX was mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

throughout his f<strong>in</strong>al round.”
