The Ridgebacks men’s hockey<br />

team picked up their third<br />

w<strong>in</strong> of the season aga<strong>in</strong>st the<br />

Guelph Gryphons on Nov. 18<br />

<strong>and</strong> 19 after a tough loss to<br />

the n<strong>at</strong>ionally ranked Western<br />

Mustangs.<br />

The Ridgebacks took on the<br />

red-hot Mustangs <strong>at</strong> the Campus<br />

Ice Centre on Nov. 18 <strong>in</strong> a<br />

quick-sk<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g, physical b<strong>at</strong>tle.<br />

The Ridgebacks kept up with<br />

Ontario’s top team, but couldn’t<br />

pull out a w<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> the end.<br />

Western struck early with a<br />

goal 46 seconds <strong>in</strong>to the first,<br />

but Luke VanMoerkerke netted<br />

a shorth<strong>and</strong>ed goal six m<strong>in</strong>utes<br />

l<strong>at</strong>er to tie it up. Western added<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts l<strong>at</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the first <strong>and</strong> early<br />

<strong>in</strong> the second to take a comm<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

3-1 lead before Ryan<br />

Oliver scored his first goal of<br />

the year.<br />

Jeremy Whelan scored <strong>in</strong> the<br />

third to cut the Western lead to<br />

one, but it wasn’t enough as the<br />

Mustangs added another l<strong>at</strong>e<br />

<strong>in</strong> the frame to seal the w<strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ue their w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g streak<br />

to 11 games.<br />

VanMoerkerke’s shorth<strong>and</strong>ed<br />

goal was his first marker of<br />

the season <strong>and</strong> the team’s first<br />

shorth<strong>and</strong>ed goal on the year.<br />

The Ridgebacks then travelled<br />

to Guelph to take on the<br />

Gryphons for the second time<br />

this year. The first game resulted<br />

<strong>in</strong> an 8-1 pound<strong>in</strong>g on the<br />

Ridgebacks by the Gryphons.<br />

Ridgebacks head coach<br />

Marl<strong>in</strong> Muylaert spent 11 seasons<br />

beh<strong>in</strong>d the bench for Gryphons,<br />

w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g the University<br />

Cup back <strong>in</strong> 1997.<br />

Guelph came out of the g<strong>at</strong>e<br />

strong with a goal less than<br />

two m<strong>in</strong>utes <strong>in</strong>to the first <strong>and</strong><br />

a powerplay marker l<strong>at</strong>e <strong>in</strong> the<br />

frame. But then the Ridgebacks<br />

ON THE ROCKS: Ridgebacks defenceman Andrew R<strong>and</strong>azzo<br />

sk<strong>at</strong>es around Western capta<strong>in</strong> Adam Nemith.<br />

hit their stride <strong>and</strong> took control<br />

of the game.<br />

Ridgebacks lead<strong>in</strong>g scorer<br />

Tony Rizzi capitalized on the<br />

powerplay just 18 seconds <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the second to get <strong>UOIT</strong> on the<br />

board. Ryan Oliver cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

his solid weekend, add<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

second goal <strong>in</strong> as many nights<br />

<strong>in</strong> the third to tie the game.<br />

With six m<strong>in</strong>utes left <strong>in</strong> the<br />

game, defenceman Andrew<br />

R<strong>and</strong>azzo scored his first ever<br />

goal as a Ridgeback, giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>UOIT</strong> the lead <strong>and</strong> eventually<br />

the w<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Tough loss for Lords<br />

as Gagliardi nets 38<br />

<strong>Durham</strong> falls<br />

91-88 to Algonqu<strong>in</strong><br />

Mike Pickford<br />

The Chronicle<br />

The <strong>Durham</strong> Lords men’s<br />

basketball team had a mixed<br />

weekend Nov. 18-19 as they<br />

tasted both victory <strong>and</strong> defe<strong>at</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong> the most dram<strong>at</strong>ic of<br />

fashions.<br />

On Friday, the Lords came<br />

up aga<strong>in</strong>st the undefe<strong>at</strong>ed Algonqu<strong>in</strong><br />

Thunder.<br />

The gulf <strong>in</strong> class couldn’t<br />

have been more obvious after<br />

the first quarter as the Thunder<br />

stormed to a 24-8 lead.<br />

The Lords, however,<br />

fought back through po<strong>in</strong>ts<br />

leader Rob Gagliardi as he<br />

scored 38 po<strong>in</strong>ts, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

half court buzzer be<strong>at</strong>er to tie<br />

the game up.<br />

Veteran Tyler McGarrity,<br />

<strong>in</strong> his fifth year with the<br />

team, was <strong>in</strong> top form also,<br />

rack<strong>in</strong>g up a season-high 22<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts to help the Lords get<br />

back <strong>in</strong>to the game.<br />

Ultim<strong>at</strong>ely, it wasn’t<br />

enough for the Lords as Algonqu<strong>in</strong><br />

scraped through 91-<br />

88.<br />

They had Chris Mooney<br />

<strong>and</strong> Roma<strong>in</strong>e Lawrence to<br />

thank for scor<strong>in</strong>g over half of<br />

their po<strong>in</strong>ts.<br />

So the Lords went <strong>in</strong>to<br />

their game the follow<strong>in</strong>g afternoon<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st La Cite disappo<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

not to have gotten<br />

anyth<strong>in</strong>g from the game the<br />

night before. But it didn’t<br />

show.<br />

The Lords led the game<br />

from start to f<strong>in</strong>ish, cruis<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to a 31-16 lead after the first<br />

quarter.<br />

At th<strong>at</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t, the end result<br />

was foregone a conclusion<br />

as the Lords cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

to rack up the po<strong>in</strong>ts, with<br />

Rob Gagliardi once aga<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>at</strong> the top of the po<strong>in</strong>ts list,<br />

scor<strong>in</strong>g 30 po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> consecutive<br />

games.<br />

The Lords sit <strong>in</strong> fourth<br />

place <strong>in</strong> the OCAA East Region<br />

with an overall record of<br />

3-3, a sign of their <strong>in</strong>consistency<br />

thus far this season.<br />

After play<strong>in</strong>g Flem<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>at</strong>e<br />

last week the Lord’s will welcome<br />

the George Brown Huskies<br />

to the CRWC on Dec. 2.<br />

<strong>and</strong> loyalist on Dec. 6.
