Electronic<br />

sports are<br />

on the rise<br />

Br<strong>and</strong>an Loney<br />

Chronicle Staff<br />

There’s a new sport on the<br />

rise. It’s not table tennis; it’s<br />

not foosball. It’s electronic<br />

sports. Com<strong>in</strong>g from underground,<br />

electronic sports are<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to take the world by<br />

storm.<br />

Electronic sports, or e-<br />

sports, <strong>in</strong>volve the competitive<br />

play<strong>in</strong>g of video games. It’s also<br />

known as competitive gam<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

professional gam<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

cybersports. The most popular<br />

genres of E-sports are real-time<br />

str<strong>at</strong>egy, fight<strong>in</strong>g, first-person<br />

shooter, rac<strong>in</strong>g, sports <strong>and</strong><br />

massively multiplayer onl<strong>in</strong>e<br />

games. Each genre has am<strong>at</strong>eur,<br />

semi-professional <strong>and</strong><br />

professional levels of play th<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>clude leagues <strong>and</strong> tournaments.<br />

E-sport m<strong>at</strong>ches can either<br />

be played onl<strong>in</strong>e over the Internet<br />

or over a local area network<br />

(LAN). Dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

professional<br />

events, there<br />

are adm<strong>in</strong>istr<strong>at</strong>ors<br />

or referees<br />

to monitor for<br />

che<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g. M<strong>at</strong>ches<br />

played on LAN<br />

have numerous<br />

advantages over<br />

play<strong>in</strong>g via Internet.<br />

The LAN has<br />

less lag, higher<br />

‘<br />

quality, <strong>and</strong><br />

competitors can<br />

be monitored<br />

directly <strong>in</strong> case<br />

they try to che<strong>at</strong>.<br />

However, Internet<br />

m<strong>at</strong>ches are<br />

still common <strong>and</strong><br />

are also used for fun <strong>and</strong> exhibition<br />

m<strong>at</strong>ches.<br />

Video games were played<br />

competitively as early as 1987.<br />

This is when Gu<strong>in</strong>ness World<br />

Records held the Video Game<br />

Masters Tournament. N<strong>in</strong>tendo<br />

held a world championship<br />

of video games <strong>in</strong> 1990, <strong>and</strong><br />

aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1994 called N<strong>in</strong>tendo<br />

Powerfest ’94.<br />

Early onl<strong>in</strong>e <strong>and</strong> competitive<br />

gam<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ued through<br />

its youth with games such as<br />

Xtrek, Netrek, Doom, Doom<br />

II, <strong>and</strong> Quake. In 1993 Wired<br />

Magaz<strong>in</strong>e considered Netrek<br />

as the first onl<strong>in</strong>e sports game,<br />

<strong>and</strong> it is the oldest Internet<br />

game still actively played.<br />

Some of the major E-sports<br />

games are Starcraft, Starcraft<br />

2, Counter-Strike, Warcraft<br />

3, Fifa, Halo, Quake 4, Street<br />

Fighter, <strong>and</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g of Fighters.<br />

E-sports gets its ma<strong>in</strong> coverage<br />

from the Internet. E-sports<br />

websites focus on professional<br />

tournaments <strong>and</strong> high-level<br />

am<strong>at</strong>eur games.<br />

Along side E-sports, grow<br />

communities of fans <strong>and</strong> enthusiasts.<br />

One such community<br />

is Toronto-based E-sports<br />

Canada.<br />

Founded this past February<br />

E-sports Canada (ESC) is a notfor-profit<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ion hop<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to br<strong>in</strong>g E-sports <strong>in</strong>to the open.<br />

ESC has hosted a few m<strong>in</strong>or<br />

events th<strong>at</strong> they call “view<strong>in</strong>g<br />

events,” <strong>in</strong> cities around the<br />

GTA. The next view<strong>in</strong>g event<br />

will show the f<strong>in</strong>als from MLG<br />

Providence.<br />

If someone asks “Wh<strong>at</strong> are<br />

E-sports?” Spokesperson for E-<br />

sports Canada, Adam Wawrzkiewicz<br />

tells them, “Electronic<br />

Sports, professional gam<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the best way to know wh<strong>at</strong><br />

it is, is to be <strong>at</strong> an event. Games<br />

have evolved to a po<strong>in</strong>t where<br />

the skills required to play come<br />

together as a sport.”<br />

Wawrzkiewicz believes the<br />

future of E-Sports lies <strong>in</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>at</strong> other countries where<br />

professional gam<strong>in</strong>g is massively<br />

popular.<br />

E-sports? Electronic<br />

Sports, professional<br />

gam<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> the best<br />

way to know wh<strong>at</strong><br />

is it, is to be <strong>at</strong> an<br />

event. Games have<br />

evolved to a po<strong>in</strong>t<br />

where the skills required<br />

to play come<br />

together as a sport.<br />

“Canada has<br />

a lot of c<strong>at</strong>ch<strong>in</strong>g<br />

up to do before<br />

E-Sports are enjoyed<br />

<strong>and</strong> celebr<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

<strong>at</strong> the level<br />

th<strong>at</strong> we see <strong>in</strong><br />

Asian countries<br />

like Korea, Ch<strong>in</strong>a<br />

<strong>and</strong> Japan.<br />

A quick look<br />

<strong>at</strong> these countries<br />

can give us a good<br />

idea of wh<strong>at</strong> the<br />

future is mov<strong>in</strong>g<br />

towards <strong>in</strong> Canada<br />

<strong>and</strong> Ontario,”<br />

’<br />

said Warwzkiewicz.<br />

He also believes<br />

Canada<br />

will play host to<br />

more major events <strong>and</strong> says<br />

Canada already contributes a<br />

high number of professional<br />

gamers to the E-Sports scene.<br />

Adam<br />

Wawrzkiewicz<br />

Warwzkiewicz emphasizes<br />

the best way for E-sports to<br />

grow is for the fans to come out<br />

to social events.<br />

He said, “This enables people<br />

to build rel<strong>at</strong>ionships with<strong>in</strong><br />

the fan community th<strong>at</strong> can<br />

benefit them even outside of<br />

E-sports <strong>and</strong> it <strong>in</strong>creases the<br />

visibility <strong>and</strong> legitimacy of E-<br />

sports to those who know little<br />

about it.” To become ma<strong>in</strong>stream,<br />

Warzwkiewicz says the<br />

stigma associ<strong>at</strong>ed with video<br />

games, th<strong>at</strong> sees gamers as lazy<br />

escapists, must be overcome.<br />

ESC <strong>and</strong> its members <strong>in</strong>tend<br />

to oper<strong>at</strong>e even when E-sports<br />

is not <strong>at</strong> its peak, <strong>and</strong> plans to<br />

be the organiz<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> will<br />

help further E-sports as an <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />

not just as events.<br />

Even with the help of community<br />

organiz<strong>at</strong>ions like E-<br />

sports Canada, <strong>and</strong> a large fan<br />

base, E-Sports has a long way<br />

to go before it ga<strong>in</strong>s popularity<br />

similar to hockey or football,<br />

but it’s well on its way.<br />

Movember is a gre<strong>at</strong><br />

success <strong>at</strong> E.P. Taylor’s<br />

By Ray McNeil<br />

The Chronicle<br />

Movember is almost over,<br />

<strong>and</strong> as of last week, the campus<br />

has raised about $6,500<br />

<strong>in</strong> funds for men’s health,<br />

specifically prost<strong>at</strong>e cancer.<br />

However, out of all the teams<br />

rais<strong>in</strong>g money, E.P. Taylor’s<br />

has shone above the rest, rais<strong>in</strong>g<br />

around $2,000.<br />

“Overall we’ve done a lot of<br />

events <strong>and</strong> it seems like we’ve<br />

got some gre<strong>at</strong> feedback,”<br />

said vice-president of campus<br />

life Derek Fullerton.<br />

The folks <strong>at</strong> the pub has<br />

been busy, rais<strong>in</strong>g as much<br />

money <strong>and</strong> awareness as they<br />

can.<br />

We’ve def<strong>in</strong>itely done better<br />

this year than we did last<br />

year,“ said bartender Sian<br />

Combr<strong>in</strong>k. Combr<strong>in</strong>k, who<br />

has been work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> E.P. Taylor’s<br />

for four years, was there<br />

when there was no Movember,<br />

<strong>and</strong> when Movember was<br />

everywhere.<br />

“Last year I th<strong>in</strong>k we only<br />

had about four or five teams<br />

on th<strong>at</strong> board, now we have<br />

eight.”<br />

The events are <strong>in</strong> no short<br />

supply either. There was a<br />

shave-off <strong>at</strong> the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

the month, where will<strong>in</strong>g men<br />

had their hair shaved off to<br />

support Movember.<br />

At the Movember silent<br />

auction, students had the<br />

chance to bid on some nice<br />

cases, <strong>and</strong> a d<strong>at</strong>e night movie<br />

package.<br />

There has also been a bake<br />

sale, a ‘stache party <strong>and</strong> a<br />

dirty b<strong>in</strong>go night, with adultthemed<br />

prizes. “We had a lot<br />

of people <strong>in</strong> here (for dirty<br />

b<strong>in</strong>go), it was one of our busiest<br />

Wednesdays,” said Combr<strong>in</strong>k.<br />

The teams around<br />

campus will be honoured on<br />

Nov. 30 <strong>at</strong> the “Moscars,” <strong>and</strong><br />

Fullerton th<strong>in</strong>ks it will be a<br />

gre<strong>at</strong> close to a gre<strong>at</strong> month.<br />

“You walk around campus,<br />

it’s nice to see all the moustaches,”<br />

said Fullerton.
