42 The Chronicle November 29, 2011 Enterta<strong>in</strong>ment<br />

Harold <strong>and</strong> Kumar for the holidays<br />

Emily Wood<br />

The Chronicle<br />

The movie opened with the<br />

cheery t<strong>in</strong>kl<strong>in</strong>g of Christmas<br />

bells <strong>and</strong> music, <strong>and</strong> the familiar<br />

bustle of a shopp<strong>in</strong>g mall<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the wonderful holiday<br />

season. Enter Kumar.<br />

Directed by Todd Strauss-<br />

Schulson, wh<strong>at</strong> followed was<br />

a ridiculous medley of a monstrous<br />

f<strong>at</strong>her-<strong>in</strong>-law, a druggedup<br />

toddler, claym<strong>at</strong>ion halluc<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ions,<br />

a run-<strong>in</strong> with the mafia<br />

<strong>and</strong> of course, a classic appearance<br />

by one Neil P<strong>at</strong>rick Harris.<br />

In the third of the Harold<br />

<strong>and</strong> Kumar series, A Very Harold<br />

<strong>and</strong> Kumar 3D Christmas<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>s under the premise th<strong>at</strong><br />

the two friends have grown<br />

apart. But with the delivery of a<br />

giant jo<strong>in</strong>t, their journey to reunite<br />

beg<strong>in</strong>s.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>at</strong>ured more<br />

quickly than Kumar, played by<br />

Kal Penn, Harold, played by<br />

John Cho, is drawn back <strong>in</strong>to<br />

his old ways on Christmas eve,<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g a quest for the perfect<br />

tree. With this, he hopes to w<strong>in</strong><br />

the approval of his f<strong>at</strong>her-<strong>in</strong>law,<br />

played by the terrify<strong>in</strong>gly<br />

hilarious Danny Trejo.<br />

Though it <strong>in</strong>duced eye roll<strong>in</strong>g<br />

from time to time, the plot was<br />

not overly predictable. Writers<br />

Jon Hurwitz <strong>and</strong> Hayden<br />

Schlossberg had the events escal<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

from scene to scene<br />

to a colossal crescendo which,<br />

although far from realistic, was<br />

enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g nonetheless.<br />

The 3D aspect of the movie<br />

was not so impressive. Yes, of<br />

course, certa<strong>in</strong> parts were undeniably<br />

cool, but c<strong>at</strong>er<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

3D simply for the sake of c<strong>at</strong>er<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to 3D hype is unnecessary.<br />

It would have been just as<br />

enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g without Kumar<br />

blow<strong>in</strong>g smoke r<strong>in</strong>gs directly<br />

<strong>in</strong>to my face.<br />

In fairness, it was mock<strong>in</strong>g<br />

3D to a certa<strong>in</strong> extent with<br />

added slow-motion dur<strong>in</strong>g an<br />

egg<strong>in</strong>g on Wall Street, but the<br />

amount of 3D effects was tiresome.<br />

For a group of 18-yearold<br />

guys however, it might not<br />

be.<br />

The m<strong>at</strong>urity level of these<br />

films doesn’t seem to age with<br />

its audience, but <strong>in</strong>stead cont<strong>in</strong>ues<br />

to c<strong>at</strong>er to the teenage<br />

(<strong>and</strong> primarily male) psyche.<br />

The humour is undeniably<br />

there, it just fails to reach a variety<br />

of demographics.<br />

For a night of silly fun <strong>and</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong>dless laughs, this movie<br />

delivers. Harold <strong>and</strong> Kumar is<br />

Break<strong>in</strong>g barriers with Hello Beautiful<br />

Am<strong>and</strong>a Darrock<br />

The Chronicle<br />

A unique blend of hip-hop,<br />

altern<strong>at</strong>ive <strong>and</strong> rock is the factor<br />

th<strong>at</strong> sets Hello Beautiful<br />

apart from the rest.<br />

This local b<strong>and</strong> from <strong>Whitby</strong><br />

started out <strong>in</strong> 2006 as a trio. As<br />

time passed the trio <strong>at</strong>tracted<br />

the <strong>at</strong>tention of bassist Dan<br />

Bradimore.<br />

After the release of their first<br />

EP, self-titled Hello Beautiful,<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2006 they ga<strong>in</strong>ed even more<br />

<strong>at</strong>tention, this time from Charlie<br />

Royal, a local M.C. who, after<br />

hear<strong>in</strong>g the b<strong>and</strong>’s unique<br />

sound, contacted them <strong>and</strong><br />

helped them fully enter <strong>in</strong>to<br />

their hip-hop, rock <strong>and</strong> altern<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

sound.<br />

With their cre<strong>at</strong>ive mixture<br />

of diverse genres sett<strong>in</strong>g them<br />

apart from others <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Durham</strong><br />

Region scene, they have<br />

accomplished wh<strong>at</strong> they set out<br />

to do.<br />

“We set out to not sound like<br />

anyone, “said Cole Kidd, lead<br />

vocalist <strong>and</strong> rhythm guitarist.<br />

“When we started out a lot<br />

of our friends were do<strong>in</strong>g rock<br />

music <strong>and</strong> rock b<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> we<br />

were k<strong>in</strong>d of th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> for<br />

us to start a rock b<strong>and</strong>.<br />

We would have to b<strong>at</strong>tle it<br />

through all the other b<strong>and</strong>s th<strong>at</strong><br />

were out there.<br />

We just cre<strong>at</strong>ed our own<br />

k<strong>in</strong>d of th<strong>in</strong>g, so th<strong>at</strong> we didn’t<br />

have to compete. We cre<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

our own genre, try to make our<br />

own scene with it.”<br />

Their unique sound helped<br />

them ga<strong>in</strong> much success <strong>in</strong><br />

2007.<br />

Not only did they realize<br />

their full-length album entitled<br />

Soundtrack for Scenario, they<br />

also had the ability to share the<br />

stage with b<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> artists<br />

such as Hedley, Swollen Members,<br />

Mariannas Trench, Juelz<br />

Santana <strong>and</strong> Hot Hot He<strong>at</strong>.<br />

2007 also brought about opportunities<br />

such as w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

Ernie Ball B<strong>at</strong>tle, play<strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong> the<br />

13 th Annual Vans Warped Tour,<br />

through The <strong>Durham</strong> Music<br />

Society, <strong>and</strong> w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g best rock<br />

album of the year for 2007<br />

were only a few of their accomplishments.<br />

“My def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g moment <strong>in</strong> our<br />

music careers were when we<br />

were able to pay a few of our<br />

bills by rock<strong>in</strong>g out,” said Kidd.<br />

Not only did the album allow<br />

doors to open for the b<strong>and</strong>,<br />

but it allowed them to project<br />

themselves through their music<br />

<strong>and</strong> share <strong>in</strong>tim<strong>at</strong>e experiences<br />

with listeners.<br />

“In our first album, we focused<br />

a lot on every song, <strong>and</strong><br />

it had a specific topic we were<br />

talk<strong>in</strong>g about, which was pretty<br />

cool. We also just have fun with<br />

it.”<br />

Their song Toxic <strong>in</strong> the City<br />

meant the most to lead guitarist/vocalist<br />

Cole, as their former<br />

guitar player <strong>at</strong> the time<br />

was b<strong>at</strong>tl<strong>in</strong>g cancer <strong>and</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through chemo, while work<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on the record<strong>in</strong>g of the song<br />

they received a phone call th<strong>at</strong><br />

their guitarist was do<strong>in</strong>g really<br />

poorly <strong>and</strong> was possibly go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to die th<strong>at</strong> night.<br />

“Now the song has a trippy<br />

mean<strong>in</strong>g to it after go<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through th<strong>at</strong> experience.”<br />

The b<strong>and</strong>, which <strong>in</strong>cludes<br />

Cole Kidd on lead vocals <strong>and</strong><br />

guitar, Kit Walsh on drums/<br />

back<strong>in</strong>g vocals, Dan Bradimore<br />

on bass, keys, <strong>and</strong> back<strong>in</strong>g vocals,<br />

Charlie Royal on lead vocals<br />

<strong>and</strong> Darrell Wallace on<br />

lead guitar, will <strong>be<strong>in</strong>g</strong> play<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> Southern Ontario till the new<br />

year.<br />

Their next show will be <strong>at</strong><br />

Hamilton’s Pour House on Dec.<br />

3.<br />

As well as perform<strong>in</strong>g they<br />

are buckl<strong>in</strong>g down <strong>and</strong> record<strong>in</strong>g<br />

for their third album.<br />

Come the new year, Hello<br />

Beautiful will be work<strong>in</strong>g on a<br />

college tour <strong>and</strong> perform<strong>in</strong>g for<br />

students.
