• Non-Contact Cooling Water Elimination - Investigate the feasibility of a non-water<br />

cooling system for the oxygen plant and the power station.<br />

Replacing the water-cooled compressor in the oxygen plant with an air-cooled<br />

compressor;<br />

Installing a heat exchanger that uses the cold oxygen and nitrogen generated<br />

by the oxygen plant; and<br />

Installing the closed-loop "radiator" cooling system for all the generators.<br />

• Cooling Water Optimization - Investigate ways to reduce the quantity of water<br />

needed for cooling and lost to evaporation and blowdown. Some options to explore<br />

are:<br />

Replacing the O.S-inch diameter pipe that delivers the cooling water to the<br />

rolls with smaller orifices or spray devices with self-cleaning nozzles;<br />

Increasing the concentration cycle of the cooling towers; and<br />

Decreasing blowuown quantity.<br />

Storm 'Vater, Solid Waste, and Air Emissions<br />

Develop and implement the following practices to minimize storm water run-on and run-off<br />

and maximize collecting and treating storm water runoff for reuse, recycling solid wastes,<br />

and air pollution control.<br />

• Storm Water Managcment - Minimizing thc contamination of storm water and<br />

reducing the quantity of contaminated storm water leaving the facility's site by:<br />

Collecting, treating, ami reusing the storm water;<br />

Grading anu contouring the site to minimize storm water run-on and runoff;<br />

Constructing covered storage areas with concrete pads and containment<br />

dikes for the iron oxide scale to prevent storm water contamination and<br />

reduce dust pollution; and<br />

Improving storage and handling procedures to reduce fuel oil spills.<br />

• Solid Waste Reduction - Reducing the quantity of solid waste stockpiled by:<br />

Reusing the iron oxiue in the furnaces or recycling slag and iron oxide by<br />

selling to cement plants or marketing the slag as road material and the iron<br />

oxiue as soil fertilizer;<br />
