escape to <strong>the</strong> North. Similarly, a more modern problem <strong>in</strong> deal<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong> is that it<br />

is a large metropolitan area that receives many converso migrants from o<strong>the</strong>r areas <strong>of</strong><br />

Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Texas and Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Mexico, especially <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Monterrey and rural areas. Due<br />

to <strong>the</strong> city’s Hispanic culture, <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong> can be very <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>in</strong>g and attractive to those<br />

com<strong>in</strong>g from <strong>the</strong> border region <strong>in</strong> this generation. When talk<strong>in</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

community it is obvious that more crypto-Jewish traditions are seen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se recent migrants<br />

to <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong>.<br />

A voice must be given to <strong>the</strong> descendants <strong>of</strong> crypto-<strong>Jews</strong> so <strong>the</strong>y will be able to<br />

openly discover <strong>the</strong>ir identity. If actions are not taken to document <strong>the</strong>se crypto-Jewish<br />

traditions <strong>the</strong>n this past, which has survived for <strong>the</strong> last five centuries, will be lost <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next<br />

generation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> greater <strong>San</strong> <strong>Antonio</strong> area. More times than most, Hispanic people <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

community remember only a s<strong>in</strong>gle family tradition that connects <strong>the</strong>m to crypto-Judaism;<br />

soon this too will disappear. <strong>The</strong> middle-aged people who come forward with knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> traditions usually are not practic<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m, but remember someth<strong>in</strong>g strange <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

grandparents or great grandparents did. As technology is becom<strong>in</strong>g more advanced, and <strong>San</strong><br />

<strong>Antonio</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g a very modern city, family traditions are be<strong>in</strong>g replaced by an American<br />

culture that emphasizes unification and uniformity. It is important to document <strong>the</strong>se<br />

traditions now, before it is too late.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Hispanic identity and Jewish identity are very complex and are made from<br />

different overlapp<strong>in</strong>g layers; this was written <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> hopes that one more layer will be<br />

accepted <strong>in</strong> both cultures.<br />
