Each participant was given <strong>the</strong> Body Dissatisfaction, PANAS, STAI, and TFEQ<br />

surveys to fill out, followed by <strong>the</strong> EDE <strong>in</strong>terview. Afterward, <strong>the</strong> participant was given<br />

one <strong>of</strong> two packets that conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>structions for ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> written emotional disclosure<br />

group or <strong>the</strong> neutral writ<strong>in</strong>g group along with three writ<strong>in</strong>g journals. <strong>The</strong>se packets were<br />

assembled <strong>in</strong> advance, labeled with a numerical identifier, and randomized <strong>in</strong> blocks <strong>of</strong><br />

two; <strong>the</strong>se packets were <strong>the</strong>n given to <strong>the</strong> participants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> order that <strong>the</strong>y <strong>the</strong>re were<br />

seen. Both sets <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>structions requested that <strong>the</strong> participant write for 20 m<strong>in</strong>utes a day<br />

three times dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> week <strong>in</strong> a quiet, private environment. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>terviewer rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

bl<strong>in</strong>d to group assignment (Norman et al., 2004).<br />

After a week elapsed participants returned <strong>the</strong>ir writ<strong>in</strong>g packets and completed <strong>the</strong><br />

Body Dissatisfaction, PANAS, STAI, and TFEQ, as well as <strong>the</strong> EDE <strong>in</strong>terview. After<br />

one month, <strong>the</strong> participants returned for a f<strong>in</strong>al assessment and completed <strong>the</strong> above series<br />

<strong>of</strong> measures once more.<br />

Written Emotional Disclosure and Disordered Eat<strong>in</strong>g—Behavioral Outcome<br />

<strong>The</strong> overarch<strong>in</strong>g hypo<strong>the</strong>sis stated that those who were assigned to <strong>the</strong> written<br />

emotional disclosure group would have less disordered eat<strong>in</strong>g symptomology than those<br />

assigned to <strong>the</strong> neutral writ<strong>in</strong>g group. <strong>The</strong> first outcome variable used to measure<br />

disordered eat<strong>in</strong>g was <strong>the</strong> behavioral outcome, which <strong>in</strong>dexed <strong>the</strong> average number <strong>of</strong><br />

times a participant b<strong>in</strong>ged or purged <strong>in</strong> one week. To exam<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> relationship between<br />

written emotional disclosure and <strong>the</strong> behavioral outcome, <strong>the</strong> two writ<strong>in</strong>g groups were<br />

compared at three time po<strong>in</strong>ts. A 2 (treatment) X 3 (time) analysis <strong>of</strong> variance (repeatedmeasures<br />

ANOVA) was conducted. Although no significant <strong>in</strong>teraction was found us<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a quadratic fit, <strong>the</strong>re was a weak marg<strong>in</strong>al trend (F = 2.179, p =. 147) reveal<strong>in</strong>g that those<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> written emotional disclosure group experienced less disordered eat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

symptomology <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> control group as measured by <strong>the</strong> behavioral outcome (see Figure<br />
