Nat Reese, guitar, Princeton, West Virginia<br />
Reese grew up in the coal fields ofWest<br />
Virginia and began to perform blues and<br />
string band music in the coal fields in the<br />
1930s. He IS the 1995 winner of the<br />
Vandalia Award, West Virginia's highest<br />
foUdife honor.<br />

The Ruckers are performers and scholars<br />
of traditional Afi"ican-American music.<br />
Sparky is a folklorist, historian, musician,<br />
storyteller, and author. His performances<br />
include music and stories from the<br />
history of African-American traditions.<br />
Playing banjo, guitar, and spoons, he is<br />
accompanied by his wife.<br />

The black string band tradition is quickly<br />
disappearing, and there are few players<br />
left. One of those few is Joe Thompson,<br />
who along with his late cousin OdeU<br />
entertained in North Carolina for many<br />
years. He was the winner of a North<br />
Carolina Folk Heritage Award in 1991.<br />
southern Virginia, and as a youngster she<br />
was influenced by the compelling<br />
unaccompanied singing of the Primitive<br />
Baptist Church. She and her husband Tracy<br />
Schwarz sing powerfiil songs from the<br />
mountains. Schwarz is a long-time member<br />
of the New Lost City Ramblers.<br />
Bobby McMillan, Lenoir, North Carolina<br />
McMiUon was awarded a North Carolina<br />
Folk Heritage Award in 2000. He is<br />
fine ballad singer and storyteller and has<br />
appeared previously at the <strong>Smithsonian</strong><br />
Folklife Festival.<br />

Wilson IS an all-purpose musician,<br />
storyteller, dance caller, and children's<br />
entertainer from Clay County, Kentucky.<br />

The southwest Virginia-based Celtibillies<br />
began in 1994 as a contra dance band but<br />

This duo performs reggae music with<br />
lyrics frequently dealing with Hfe in the<br />
region. They add a new, contemporary<br />

working to preserve the ballad tradition<br />
in Appalachia. She learned many of her<br />
songs from her great-aunt Dellie<br />
Chandler Norton. She is a member of<br />
theWaUin/Chandler/Norton family,<br />
who are known for their ballads. Folk<br />
song collector Cecil Sharp collected<br />
songs from the family in igi6. She is<br />
accompanied by Jim Taylor.<br />

There are hundreds of regional bands who<br />
play local events and the festival circuit<br />
during the summer. Among these, the<br />
O'Qumns are a family group from<br />
BirchleafVirgima, a stone's throw from the<br />
home of the Stanley Brothers. They play<br />
regionally in southwest Vfrginia and<br />
Kentucky. Family patriarch Fred O'Quinn<br />
plays both old-time and bluegrass music<br />
on his banjo.<br />

Myles, a native of Cumberland,<br />
Kentucky, now hves in Appalachia,<br />
Virginia. Myles writes her own religious<br />
songs as well as mming-oriented songs.<br />
