One of the great Southern string bands<br />
today is Ralph Bhzard and the New<br />
Southern Ramblers. Bhzard (b. 1918),<br />
from Blounrville, Tennessee, is an<br />
acknowledged master and one of the<br />
great fiddlers playmg m the longbow<br />
style. He received a National Heritage<br />
Fellowship from the National<br />
Endowment for the Arts m 2002.<br />

Arneach is a member of the Eastern<br />
Band of the Cherokee Tribe. His tales<br />
include old stories of the Cherokee<br />
and contemporary tales fk)m other<br />

Botinie Collins, Fairmont, HesI l^irginia<br />
CoUins, from Doddridge County, West<br />
Virginia, is one of the states most<br />
beloved storytellers. Recognized for her<br />
humor, CoUins has been involved and<br />
acted as a judge in the state's liar's<br />
contest. She was awarded the lyyi<br />
VandaUa Award, West Virginia's top<br />
folkhfe award.<br />
Orville Hicks, Boone, North Carolina<br />
A member of the well-known Hicks<br />
storyteUing family, Orville Hicks is one<br />
of the fine tellers of "Jack Tales" and<br />
carries on the tradition of such great<br />
storytellers as Ray and Stanley Hicks.<br />
Bil Lepp, South Charleston, H'est Virginia<br />
Lepp is a side-splittingly fianny man. He<br />
was the winner of the West Virginia<br />
liar's contest so often that he was made<br />
the emcee. Hear Bil's stories of his<br />
adventures with his pal. Buck Dog.<br />

schoolhouse in Carcassonne, and<br />
residents still gather to dance a<br />
traditional form of square dancing they<br />
have preserved since settlement days.<br />

Susan Bridges, Meadows of Dan, Virguiia<br />
Bridges learned from older family and<br />
friends which greens and other natural<br />
sources of food to pick, mix, and eat.<br />
She has practiced namral foraging and<br />
has begun developing a business around<br />
dried and camied food products, such as<br />
wild strawberry jam and blue violet jelly.<br />
Kim Carroll, Clintwood. Virginia<br />
Carroll is a food product entrepreneur<br />
who cans and sells vegetables such as<br />
pickled beans, corn, and mixed pickles.<br />
Her grandmother's recipe that she uses<br />
for mixed pickles is said to be one of<br />
the best in the country.<br />
Linda Childress, Clintwood, Virginia<br />
Childress is a food product<br />
entrepreneur who is developing dry<br />
mixes for biscuits and varieties of gravy.<br />
She is also known for making anything<br />
out of apples, including pies,<br />
dumphngs, and apple butter.<br />
Harvey Christie, Roimiey, West Virginia<br />
Christie is a chef and owner/ operator<br />
of Gourmet Central, a business that<br />
markets fine jams and jeUies.<br />

Lacey Griffey, Benham, Kentucky<br />
Griffey prepares a big Sunday dinner<br />
that includes fried chicken, cabbage,<br />
greens, fruit cobblers, and pies.<br />
She is<br />
part of the African-American coal<br />
mining community of the Benham-<br />
Lynch area of Kentucky.<br />
Gerald Hawkins, Knoxville, Tennessee<br />
Greg Golden, Treadway, Tennessee<br />
Hawkins prepares Mexican-style dishes,<br />
inspired by his Mexican-American sonin-law.<br />
He specializes in salsa that he<br />
cans and sells. He will be assisted by<br />
Greg Golden, chef and manager of<br />
Clinch-Powell Community Kitchens.<br />
Marie Junaluska, Cherokee, North Carolina<br />
Junaluska is a member of the Eastern<br />
Band of the Cherokee Tribe who<br />
specializes in traditional cooking of that<br />
commumry: chicken, greens (cabbage,<br />
mustard, and turnip), breads (lye<br />
dumplings, bean and corn bread), and<br />
potatoes (fried, boiled, and stewed).<br />
Bennie Massey, Lynch. Kentucky<br />
A retired coal miner from the Benham-<br />
Lynch-Cumberland region of<br />
Kentucky, Massey is well known in his<br />
community as an expert barbeque chef.<br />
Fred McClellan, Abingdon, Virginia<br />
McCleUan was a tobacco farmerturned-shiitake<br />
mushroom-grower for<br />
chefs around Abingdon restaurants.<br />
He also has 20 years of food service<br />
background operating his HiUbiUy<br />
Food Store business, specializing in<br />
mountain staples such as chicken,<br />
catfish, taters, breakfast biscuits, potato<br />
salad, beans, and hotdog chiL.
