REPORT OF THE VERMONT STATE GEOLOGIST. 91
PLATE XXI.
Blue Mouutain Granite Quarry, Ryegate, Vt.
It has been considered by some eminent geologists metamorphic
in origin—the alteration of sedimentary deposits through
heat and pressure. It is unquestionably igneous in origin. By
volcanic action this molten magma now so iligilly crystallized
was brought to the surface. I have found 1)0th the Washington
limestone and the Bradford schist in actual contact with the
granite and indurated by it. Large crystals of calcium carbonate
have formed from the fusion and these are not infrequent
in the contact zone. Near Graniteviiie there is a large patch
of phylhte schist. According to the metamorphic theory, this
inclusion would be impossii)ie. With the volcanic tileory it is
in perfect harmony. It cailnot he older than the \Vashington
limestone through which it penetrated. This, as is often noted,
is Lower Trenton. The granites of Orange county, with
twenty-five localities represented on the map, may all be catalogued
of the Same age.
The granite of Orange Mountain is much coarser and in many
places ligilter than the Barre grallite. The crystals of feldspar
are ofttimes very large. When the coarse exterior has been
renloved, there may be revealed a fine grallite equal in many
respects to the famous Barre neigllbor. It is not a continuous
body with the Barre granite, for it is separated from it by a
band of sedinlentary rocks two miles in width. Beautiful contact
phenonlena can he foulld on the side of the nlountain facing
Orange Center. In the contact rock are crystals of calcite two
inches in diameter.
Plate XXI represents the granite quarries of Blue Mountain,
Ryegate.
This granite, like the Barre, is susceptible of a beautiful polish.
The mica constituent is both muscovite and biotite. The
quartz sonletimes assumes a redidisil hue, giving a great variety
in color. The mountain, like Ascutnev, is the modern representative
of an extinct volcano, and the Washington limestone,
wilicil encircles it, shows abundant evidence of excessive heat.
Plate XXII represents Mount Ascutneyfronl tile WilIdSor side.
The nlountain is situated in \Vindsor and \Veathersfield. In
approaching the mountain from Windsor, the Washington lime-
