3) Between 2004 and 2009 The RSD of Ministry of Agriculture and Zoba<br />

Administrati<strong>on</strong>s has c<strong>on</strong>ducted envir<strong>on</strong>mental m<strong>on</strong>itoring (Post Investment<br />

Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Impact Assessment- PI-EIA) <strong>on</strong> major parastatal irrigated<br />

agricultural farms in order to undertake and recommend remedial measures for<br />

existing and potential negative envir<strong>on</strong>mental impacts. To menti<strong>on</strong> some of the<br />

EIA related to Agricultural Biodiversity:<br />

a) PI-EIA <strong>on</strong> Sawa and Afhimbol agro industry al<strong>on</strong>g the lower Barka River<br />

Basin - in 2004<br />

b) PI-EIA <strong>on</strong> Gash-Setit and Barka Commercial Agricultural Farms which<br />

located al<strong>on</strong>g the lower Gash River Basin - in 2009<br />

c) PI- EIA for the Livestock Vaccine Producti<strong>on</strong> Project at Villago-Asmara by a<br />

team of experts from the Department of Envir<strong>on</strong>ment, RSD, and Asmara<br />

Municipality,<br />

d) PI-EIA of new di<str<strong>on</strong>g>versi<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> project funded by IFAD at Keih Kor, Debub regi<strong>on</strong> –<br />

in 2009.<br />

2) Sub Sehara Mining Company, 3) IFAD with Government of the State of Eritrea<br />

Progress of Acti<strong>on</strong>s implementati<strong>on</strong> & Sources of Funding<br />

• No progress has been made in establishing <strong>on</strong>-farm c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> of landraces in<br />

organized manner. Still traditi<strong>on</strong>al way of in-situ c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> of landraces by<br />

individual farmers is c<strong>on</strong>tinuing and m<strong>on</strong>itored by MoA.<br />

• In 2009 proposal and c<strong>on</strong>cept paper to implement in situ c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> of landraces is<br />

prepared and it waiting for funding.<br />

• No Progress. There is no well organized incentive system in place except the usual<br />

extensi<strong>on</strong> service and training program focused <strong>on</strong> crop landraces c<strong>on</strong>servati<strong>on</strong> given<br />

by MoA.<br />

• Recently a project proposals was prepared that will support farmers to establish<br />

community based seed banks, provide training and supply required facilities.<br />
