stanza is described as the embryo in the womb of 'immortality' (amrtasya yonau).<br />
It is clear that even. Bráhman <strong>and</strong> Prajäpati - here clearly distinctmust<br />
tolerate an occasional encroachment on their privileges.<br />
According to A VS. 15, 1, 1 ff. (AVP. 18, 27, 1 f.) Prajäpati existed<br />
'chronologically' before <strong><strong>Brahma</strong>n</strong>. Seeing gold in himself, he generated<br />
that. "It becB;me ... great, it became pre-eminent (jye§tham), it became<br />
Bráhman, it became productive heat (tapas), it became reality (satyam),<br />
<strong>with</strong> that he procreated offspring".<br />
In SB. 6, 1, 1, 1 ff. it is stated that in the beginning from the non-existent<br />
(asat) seven persons (puru§a) came into being, who were made one<br />
Person (Puru~a) who became Prajäpati. Puru~a Prajäpati, wishing to reproduce<br />
himself, performed tapas <strong>and</strong> created first of all Bráhman (neuter)<br />
which is described as the threefold Veda 1 2 •<br />
Even if Whitney13 be right in surmising that the metrically redundant<br />
bráhma~ä in AVS. 17, 1, 27 "has slipped in here out of 28 a" <strong>and</strong> even if<br />
in the parallel passage AVP. 18, 32, 10 ff. the line 11 ab has dittographically<br />
replaced a line that was identical <strong>with</strong> or equivalent to A VS. 17, 1,<br />
28 ab, the fact remains that both texts read "<strong>with</strong> Prajäpati's Bráhman 1 '+<br />
(as) defence (~arma~ä, a d.efensive armour) am I covered". Moreover ,<br />
bráhman is AVS. 1, 19, 4; RV. 6,75,19 (cf. also AVS. 5, 8, 6) called an<br />
inner (cf. AVS. 11, 8, 30) defence (varma ... antaram) against evil powers,<br />
enemies etc .15. The relation bet ween the fundamental power Bráhman<br />
<strong>and</strong> Prajäpati is not completely clear, however, although the genitive of<br />
the god 's name is, like the following kasyapasya, no doubt 'possessive':<br />
(the) Bráhman emanating from, wielded by Prajäpati <strong>and</strong> through th is intermediary<br />
god defending the worshipper?<br />
In a series of benedictory mantras to be repeated at the end of the pravargya<br />
ceremonies (TÄ. 4, 42) it reads: prajäpater brahmakosa1[l brahma<br />
prapadye "I take refuge <strong>with</strong> Prajäpati's treasury of Bráhman (which<br />
means the entire collection of the mantras of the Veda, cf. the comm.)<br />
(<strong>and</strong>) Bráhman (i.e. of the peculiar form or character of the Veda, comm.).<br />
- In MNU. 30 (TÄ. 3, 13, 2) the Highest Being, also called Puru~a <strong>and</strong> regarded<br />
as identical <strong>with</strong> Prajäpati (<strong>and</strong> <strong>Brhaspati</strong>), is even described as<br />
being of <strong><strong>Brahma</strong>n</strong>'s nature (namo •.. brähmaye: parabrahmasvarüpäya,<br />
comm. ) 16. Cf. also MNU. 14 identifying Agni, Väyu, Sun, Moon, Amrtam,<br />
Bráhman, the Primaeval Waters <strong>and</strong> Prajäpati <strong>and</strong> 64 stating that Prajäpati<br />
is the (universa!) ätman.<br />
One should indeed be aware of the fact that the term bráhman of ten indicates<br />
one of the manifestations of this power concept. When, for instance,<br />
VS. 19, 75 -one of the stanzas of the sauträmanï ritual 17 - states that Prajäpati<br />
drank the essence of the fermented liquo'r brahma~ä ("by means of<br />
Bráhman") this term is explained, by Uvata, as "taking the form of the<br />
threefold (Veda)", by Mahïdhara as "taking the form of the gäyatrï (metre)";<br />
cf. st. 78 Prajäpati drank vedena "by means of the Veda". From the<br />
