Treatment for Leprosy MDT Drugs : These drugs are used in WHO – MDT and are a combination of Rifampicin, Clofazimine & Dapsone for MB patients, and of Rifampicin & Dapsone for PB patients. Among these, Rifampicin is the most important drug and highly bactericidal. Therefore, it is included in the treatment of both types of Leprosy. Clofazimine and Dapsone are mainly bacteriostatic drugs but they have very very low bactericidal action also. For PB Rifampicin Dapsone Rifampicin For MB Clofazimine Dapsone Treatment of Leprosy with only one anti – Leprosy drug will always result in development of drug resistance to that particular drug. Treatment with Dapsone or any other anti – Leprosy drug used as monotherapy should be considered as unethical practice. 40
