During the past two years all New Zealand Secondary
Schools have been required to complete a Review of their
Careers Programmes, based on the ‘Careers NZ’ Career
Education Benchmarks. A very successful Board Review of
the HPC Careers Department was carried out in 2012.
The Review was very informative and supportive of the
Careers Programme implemented at the College. The key
recommendation of the Review was for greater integration
of the career management competencies (ie student lifelong
career management skills) into the River Group programme.
Also for more involvement of River Guides in the student
career development process.

The success of the Careers staff in guiding, mentoring and
assisting students in their transition from school into tertiary
study and employment, was identified as a key strength of
the HPC Careers Programme. This success is clearly
demonstrated in the school’s 2012 school leaver destination
data.
HPC was one of the few Secondary Schools to receive an
increase in Gateway funding for 2013. This is a direct
reflection of the quality of the programme which is used as a
model for other schools.
Gateway provides students with valuable workplace
experience in their chosen vocation. At HPC the Gateway
Programme also includes a Workplace Safety Course (15
NCEA credits) plus the opportunity to complete a First Aid
Course (4 credits) and a Learner Drivers Licence Workshop (6
credits).
