The future is not some
place we are going to,
but one we are creating.
The paths are not to be
found, but made, and
the activity of making
them, changes both the
maker and the
destination
John Sinclair
Our core mission is to prepare our students for their future lives. This
involves ensuring they have the qualifications as well as the attributes
required to take their place as contributing citizens, both in terms of
society and the economy.
A key aspect of this, as well as a Board of Trustees goal, is to ensure that
every student develops a learning and career direction appropriate to
the particular strengths, interests and aspiration of each young person.
To this end, learning and career planning and decision making has been
integrated into our River programme as a process which begins in Year 9
and continues throughout their years at college.
The programme is based on four key career competencies:
1. Self awareness: students have a strong awareness of self, their
identity, language and culture, how they relate to others and their
potential for development. They can identify their special and
distinctive capabilities and their social and cultural influences.
2. Exploring possibilities: students can identify the many future
possibilities and opportunities available to them in life, learning
and work. They understand the role of lifelong learning and the
influence of shifts in regional, national and global economies on
their life, learning and work.
3. Making choices and plans: students understand the consequences
of their choices and decisions and the impact they have on
themselves and others. They can identify all the options available
so they can make informed choices about their next step when
they transition from school.
4. Decision making: students are able to make flexible life, learning
and work plans. They have the capabilities to seek and secure
opportunities and are adaptable and responsive to change.
Students can find alternatives when faced with obstacles and have
the resilience and ability to adjust as their life, learning and work
environments change.
We are now tracking all of our school leavers’ career
directions. Of the 141 students who left school at
Years 11, 12 and 13, 85% left with a minimum
qualification of NCEA Level 2 and 135 headed towards
tertiary learning and full time employment.
Given that the youth unemployment rate stands
at 17%, we feel that the time and resources
given to Careers speaks for itself. The table at
the bottom gives a sense of learning and career
destinations from graph shows the learning and
career destinations for the 100 Year 13 students
from last year.
Parents are a key factor in each young person’s
decision making around careers. If as a parent,
you have any questions or would like to talk to
our Careers Co-ordinator, Mr Keith, feel free to
contact him on (07) 867-7029 or
Winter Uniform
The transition from summer to winter uniform will
start after the Easter long weekend. Easter weekend is
a 5-day long weekend, from Friday 29 March to
Tuesday 2 April. From Wednesday 3 April students can
wear either their winter uniform or their summer
uniform. Students need to be in ONE full uniform and
NOT in a combination of uniforms. This arrangement
will be in effect until the end of Week 2 of Term 2 and
from Monday 6 May students have to be in full winter
uniform.
Board of Trustee news:
At our last BOT
meeting, Mr Ian Clark
stood down as BOT
chair, with Mr Peter
Schouten fulfilling this
position until BOT
elections in May of this
year. Mr Clark, himself
a past pupil of HPC, has
been on the Board for
eight years and
chairperson for the last
six years.
Under Mr Clark’s leadership, we have
seen a significant number of initiatives
underway, including the Centennial
Centre and fields development for
example.
Mr Clark has also ensured a positive
working relationship between BOT and
staff, a key factor in the success of any
school.
A huge thank you to Mr Clark for his
considerable contribution over this time.
Academic Dean – L Benns
Most students have settled
into their courses really well
and are working towards
achieving their first lot of
credits in each of their
subjects. If students are
successful in achieving these
have at least 20 credits
towards their NCEA at the
end of term one.
Students have until 31 st
Careers News
Careers and Gateway
Peter Keith
During the past two years all New Zealand Secondary
Schools have been required to complete a Review of their
Careers Programmes, based on the ‘Careers NZ’ Career
Education Benchmarks. A very successful Board Review of
the HPC Careers Department was carried out in 2012.
The Review was very informative and supportive of the
Careers Programme implemented at the College. The key
recommendation of the Review was for greater integration
of the career management competencies (ie student lifelong
career management skills) into the River Group programme.
Also for more involvement of River Guides in the student
career development process.
The success of the Careers staff in guiding, mentoring and
assisting students in their transition from school into tertiary
study and employment, was identified as a key strength of
the HPC Careers Programme. This success is clearly
demonstrated in the school’s 2012 school leaver destination
data.
HPC was one of the few Secondary Schools to receive an
increase in Gateway funding for 2013. This is a direct
reflection of the quality of the programme which is used as a
model for other schools.
Gateway provides students with valuable workplace
experience in their chosen vocation. At HPC the Gateway
Programme also includes a Workplace Safety Course (15
NCEA credits) plus the opportunity to complete a First Aid
Course (4 credits) and a Learner Drivers Licence Workshop (6
credits).
Working Smarter
There is no substitute or short cuts with study; students simply
have to put the hard work in. However, an understanding of how
the brain works makes revision and preparing for tests and exams
more effective.
Most material learnt in class, if not reviewed, is forgotten within
24 hours, then up to 80% of it is „dumped‟ from the brain. After
a month, the brain remembers only 3 – 4% of what was learnt in
class. Most of this will need to be learnt all over again for tests
or exams.
By regularly reviews of work, the brain says
to itself, “Here it is again, it must be
important, I need to hang on to it”. Just 5
minutes of revisiting stuff that was learnt
in each class on a regular basis will activate
the long term memory and making preparing
for exams a lot less work in the long run.
Work Smarter
about this is in their
Homework Diaries on
Community Notices
The Science department has decided to support
the Starship Hospital’s
“Phones for Rewards programme”.
It would be appreciated if
anyone in the community
and/or students could bring
in any old and unwanted
Cell/Mobile phones. This has
an added benefit of gaining
rewards points for our school
through this programme,
that can be redeemed for
cameras, camcorders, interactive, whiteboards
and so on.
Any old cell/mobile phones can be handed into
the school office for Mr Goodwin and students
can bring them to room 19.
Thank you for your support in this matter.
From the Guidance Dept:
I thought this was a superb message to those of us who have daughters. Many thanks to
The Parenting Place for allowing us to share it with you. I have ordered 2 copies of the
quoted book “Raising Girls”. If you would like to borrow a copy, just let me know.
Trevor Benns
School Counsellor
What our daughters
really need
My daughters are 16 and 13. So when I read in the paper
about teenage girls in Auckland having to be cut from a
stolen car after it crashed into a wall during a police
pursuit, I take notice.
In so many ways, it’s a great time to be a girl. They have more opportunities than
ever before. But they also have more pressures. Our popular culture is telling them
that to be accepted they have to look and act a certain way. Girls are indulging in
risky behaviour and they’re getting into trouble.
Not all girls of course, but some girls. The trick is keeping them on track. If there’s
one person who can help with that, it’s Steve Biddulph, author of Raising Girls. The
book is a great read and I’m really looking forward to hearing Steve speak at The
Parenting Place on 14 March.
It's not about being frightened for our girls, but about understanding they need a
guide to help them grow up strong and proud. As parents, we’re the best people to
do that - sometimes we just need some help knowing exactly what to do.
Steve Biddulph says there are three things in particular we can give our girls;
unrushed mums who take the time to listen to what’s going on in their world, dads
who think their daughters are amazing (and let them know it), and protection from a
media culture that is pressuring them to grow up too soon.
My two girls are very precious to me and I let them know as often as I can. We go
shopping, have coffee and simply chat about life - that time together is always one of
the highlights of my week.
HOW TO HACK
YOUR EDUCATION
You have heard of hacking computers. How about hacking your education? To get a complete
education, take matters into your own hands. This does not mean dropping out of school or not
going on to further education. It means creating options and opportunities for yourself where it
seems none exist. You are familiar with a school syllabus. The first step to hacking your education is
creating a life syllabus. To start, you need to find the answers to three questions:
Who am I?
What do I love?
Where am I going?
First, answer these questions yourself, and then ask your friends, mentors, parents and teachers. It
can be revealing to know who other people believe you are, who other people believe you are good
at and where other people think you should go, but do not let their answers decide. Ultimately, you
must answer these questions for yourself.
Who am I? For much of our lives we are defined by other people but try to figure out who you are
for yourself. Try defining yourself in six words.
What do I love? Here’s your chance to ask yourself: What am I passionate about? What do I enjoy
doing? What gives me energy? What do I consider fun? Your answers to these questions may relate
to school – perhaps you love maths or English – but they don’t have to. You might love horses,
travelling or talking. It all counts.
Where am I going? It’s easy to get caught up in the day without thinking about the big picture.
Write down your life goals – the 100 most important things you want to do in your lifetime. This is
your own bucket list. Once you’ve written down 100 items, break the list down into what you’ll
complete in one year, five years and ten years. Next, break down your goals for the next year into
what you’ll complete in the next 30, 60 and 90 days. Revisit you goal lists
often
because they can and will change. Share your goals for the next 30 days
with a
friend who will help make sure you stay on track.
If answering these questions was hard, don’t feel bad. You can’t be
expected to know exactly what you want to do with your life. Bus
answering these questions now puts you on the path to directing
your own education.
Students who hack their educations will change the world.
You can tell these students apart because they have a
spark in their eyes, and if you ask them about their
passion they won’t stop talking. These are the students
who will have jobs waiting for them – or, more likely,
will create their own jobs. You can be one of these
students. Your life is a field trip – and you don’t
need a permission slip.
At this time of year there are a lot of winter sports codes
and teams looking to start their pre-season trainings, trials
and musters. Whilst the actions of coaches and trainers to
get their teams physically ready for the demands of the
particular winter sport should be commended – it must be
remembered that if a student has a commitment to a
summer sport then this takes precedence over any winter
sport trials, trainings and meetings. Should a student need
to be in 2 places at once then they are to go to the
summer sport first and then catch up with the staff
member concerned with regards to the winter sport. If any
students are unsure of whom this is then there is a list of
CRICKET
With six keen, talented Year 9 cricketers
entering H.P.C. in February, it was decided to
give this College's team the strongest possible
competition by entering the side in the Waikato
Secondary Schools Colts grade. This was
considered the best way to challenge and
develop the cricketing skills of the Years 9 /10
players who will hopefully form the nucleus of a
strong 1st XI in the near future.
After four weeks, the team has had two wins
and two losses and has benefited from its
experiences. Almost every player has made a
firm contribution to the team's cause over the
four games. From a batting perspective, Cullen
Aislabie has been outstanding and has already
scored more than two hundred runs at an
average of over 50. The bowling honours have
been evenly shared with Will Smit 4/26 against
Hamilton Boys High School being the best figures
so far.
There are four more matches to be played
during March.
Hauraki Plains College Year 9 cricketers Cullen
Aislabie and Keegan Walsh have been advised
that they have been selected in the Northern
Districts Under 14 squad which will be involved
in off- season training beginning in July. Aislabie
who was the leading run scorer in the Northern
Districts Primary Schools tournament prior to
Christmas, has also been in fine form for his
College team in recent weeks.
Netball
L Benns TIC
Trials have been taking place over the past few
weeks. It is looking like we will have 13 teams.
Coaches and Managers are required for each of
these teams. Please contact Lynette Benns if
you are keen to help out with coaching or
managing a team, once the teams have been
named / selected.
HPC BASKETBALL – WHERE AMAZING
HAPPENS!
Thanks to those parents and whanau who attended
the Club’s AGM last week. We are looking for
Managers and helpers for some teams so if you
would be able to help out in any way it would be
much appreciated. We have a great committee so
you would be fully supported if you decide you
would like to be part of a great Club! Trials for our
4 teams are underway this term as we have a preseason
tournament down to Rotorua on 12 April.
Letters will be going out as soon as the 4 teams for
Western Heights are named with more details.
Those players unable to trial due to summer code
commitments will be given another opportunity
after Western Heights. Thank you to the following
Coaches for 2013:-
Jnr. Girls – Moana Te Moananui
Jnr. Boys – Malcolm Cross
Snr. Girls – Suzanne Herkt and Bronwyn Roberts,
Technical Assistant – Karen Saunders
Snr. Boys – Keegan Aislabie
The Thames Valley league will commence at the
beginning of term 2 and each player will be issued
with a draw for the season. Players will also be
issued with their uniforms, warm-up shirts and gear
bags and must be responsible for these during the
season. Jnr Boys and Girls must wear their HPC
tracksuit and warm-up shirt to and from games and
the Snr Boys and Girls must wear their Number
Ones. Each team is also responsible to do bench
duty and help with setting up and cleaning up at
home games. Fees are due by the 2 nd playing game
and they are $90.00 per child for the season, these
help pay for Thames Valley registration, travel to
Mercury Bay, equipment, uniforms etc. At Hauraki
Plains College we have a no pay, no play policy. The
next HPC Basketball Club meeting is on Monday 8
April at 7:00pm in Room 1 and we would welcome
any new or interested parents, caregivers, family or
whanau. As the old saying goes “many hands make
light work”. Meanwhile if you have any queries
please do not hesitate to contact the Teacher in
Charge - Mary Aislabie or our Chairperson – Moana
