Brief description of project<br />

Objectives<br />

Training of all health visitors in the early identification and<br />

management for postnatal depression using the Edinburgh Postnatal<br />

Depression Scale for routine screening.<br />

The importance of early identification and treatment has been<br />

highlighted recently by research on possible long-term effects on the<br />

mother/child relationship, the child’s cognitive development and<br />

behavioural difficulties.<br />

• Increase knowledge of postnatal depression, its signs and symptoms<br />

and the theories surrounding its causes.<br />

• Raise awareness of prevention strategies and ways of adopting into<br />

practice.<br />

• Update counselling skills for all health visitors.<br />

• Understanding of Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale and its<br />

limitations.<br />

Outcomes: Planned • Increased knowledge among public and professionals.<br />

• Reduced damaging effects of post-natal depression on the family.<br />

• Increased health visitors skills and confidence in its management.<br />

• Greater awareness and openness among mothers.<br />

• Illness, due to early identification, is shorter and less severe.<br />

• Improved multi-professional communication.<br />

Brief description of project<br />

Objectives<br />

The provision of a careline telephone counselling service for people<br />

with multiple sclerosis (MS) and their families.<br />

This needs to be developed with more face to face counselling,<br />

including peer counselling.<br />

Our overall objective is to strengthen the careline service and to<br />

develop a strategy to provide easier access to support services for<br />

people with MS, their carers and families.<br />

Outcomes: Actual A training programme for volunteer counsellors.<br />
