Brief description of project<br />
Objectives<br />
The Behaviour Support Team was established during the autumn of<br />
1998. It is a six member team representing three Belfast Education<br />
and Library Board services, Curriculum Advice and Support,<br />
Education Welfare and Educational Psychology. The broad aim of the<br />
team is to promote and sustain good behaviour in schools and many<br />
of its objectives and strategies involve the promotion of mental<br />
health among pupils, teachers and parents.<br />
The objectives of the Behaviour Support Team are to provide advice<br />
and support to teachers and schools to improve their ability to:<br />
• identify and help children with emotional and behavioural<br />
problems;<br />
• promote self-esteem;<br />
• apply anti-bullying policies and strategies;<br />
• diffuse confrontations and teach anger management skills;<br />
• promote parenting skills;<br />
• manage personal stress;<br />
• respond appropriately to traumatic events;<br />
• provide a nurturing environment;<br />
• collaborate effectively with agencies outside education.<br />
Outcomes: Actual The team began work in schools in December 1998 and requests for<br />
support began to grow rapidly in number during January 1999.<br />
