What in the <strong>Drilling</strong> Contractor’s Management System demonstrates assurance to others that<br />

this objective can be achieved?<br />

‣ Refer to Part 4.7 (Risk Treatment).<br />

2.3.6 Environmental Management<br />

Objective<br />

To demonstrate sound environmental per<strong>for</strong>mance in all operational phases, by identifying<br />

the environmental aspects (hazards) and controlling the environmental impact (risk) of<br />

activities and services, and taking into account defined environmental policies and best<br />

available practices and technology.<br />

How can this be achieved?<br />

‣ Ensuring that there are policies, objectives and plans (see Part 2.1 - Policies and<br />

Objectives) that address the need to:<br />

- comply with relevant environmental legislation, regulations and standards<br />

- comply with contractual environmental requirements<br />

- manage any significant adverse environmental impacts<br />

‣ Ensuring environmental requirements are adequately addressed in the shared <strong>HSE</strong><br />

management processes and supporting documentation, e.g.:<br />

- <strong>HSE</strong> plans and programmes<br />

- job descriptions and responsibilities<br />

- training and competence<br />

- internal communication processes<br />

- operational control procedures and work instructions<br />

- identification of appropriate Key Per<strong>for</strong>mance Indicators<br />

‣ Developing specific processes to support the implementation and delivery of the<br />

environmental plans and programmes, e.g.:<br />

- environmental monitoring plans<br />

- measurement and estimation of discharges and emissions (including laboratory and<br />

calibration procedures and identification of appropriate ‘emissions factors’, etc).<br />

- spill preparedness and response plans<br />

‣ Establishing a process <strong>for</strong> identifying all elements of the Rig services and activities that<br />

can interact with the environment (environmental aspects).<br />

‣ Recognizing the significance of the nature and location specific sensitivities of the<br />

receiving environment in identifying significant adverse environmental impacts.<br />

‣ Clarifying responsibilities with the client <strong>for</strong> identifying and assessing site-specific<br />

environmental conditions.<br />

‣ Co-operating with the client on establishing location, or well specific, significant adverse<br />

environmental impact criteria.<br />

‣ Reviewing the Rig environmental aspects against the site specific criteria and highlight<br />

those that may result in a significant adverse environmental impact.<br />

What in the <strong>Drilling</strong> Contractor’s Management System demonstrates assurance to others that<br />

this objective can be achieved?<br />

‣ Confirmation that environmental policies, objectives and targets are clearly defined<br />

either as part of the organisation’s integrated <strong>HSE</strong> policies and objective statements, or<br />

as separate documents.<br />

‣ Confirmation that the <strong>HSE</strong> management processes and documentation shared between<br />

the <strong>Drilling</strong> Contractor and the client take account of the environment.<br />

‣ Details of any environmental specific management processes and programmes.<br />
