Maritime Commission, while the steel plant is financed by an It. F. C. loan, Mr. Kaiser is president, and owns control of this compn , i y. PERMANENTS METALS CORP.- Henry J. Kaiser is president of The Perumn.nte Metals Corp. This company opelates Richmond shipbuilding yards No. I and No. 2 and owns the magn.esium plant at Permanente, Calif. Incidentally. the magnesium plant is the only uncertaiu note so far in the symphony of Kaiser successes. The controversial Hansgirg process is lagging in production while its invntor, a native of Austria, languishes in an internment camp. Funds for the two shipbuilding yards were furnished by the Maritime Commission, while the maRgeuam enterprise was financed by an R. F. C. loan. Collateral for this loan is prdit accruing to the company from all of its shipbuilding operations. THE PERMANENTE CORP.--Third layer of the pyramid is the company which bid $1.19 a barrel, or about 20 per cent below the prevailing quotation on a 5,000.0O0barrel cement contract for the Shasta Da, in California. When the bitis went in Mr. Kaiser didn't have a plant, hut he built one in the record time of six months and the contract is still being fulfilled. The Pernnente Corp. owns two te.amships, which are nsed as cement carriers off the West Coast. Mr. Kaiser is president of the company. COLUMBIA CONSTRUCTION CO.- Iluihler of Bonneville Dam,. The company also constructed the jetties at Grays Harbor, Wash. Largest project at present is the construction of the Los Angeles-Lonl Beach breakwater. This latter projett is a joint veture between the Colroubia Construction and other moetwrs of the "Six C...panie.'" It is Kaiser operated. OPERATES LONGEST CONVEYOR COLUMBIA CONSTRUCTION CO., INC. Similar in name to Columbia Cnlstruction Co., but an entirely separat company ashide from the fact that Mr. Kaiser is president of both concerns. The Columbia Construction Co., Inc., is furnishing aggregates for Shasta Daro. This is the company which operates the longest conveyor ever built Oro miles long) over which gravel for the darn flows in an endless stream from the beds to the site. Cost was reported in the neighborhood of $1,100,000. CONSOLIDATED BUILDERS, INC. -This company completed Grand Coulee Dam. This dar, together with Bonneville, is playing all important part in the lintirnai defense effort by furnishing power to electroometallurgical industries, notably aluminum, in the Pacific Northwest. There are many other Kaiser interests. but the foregoing are the main ones. Mr. Kaiser is interested in the Joshua Hendy Iron Works, of Sunnyside, Calif., the largest builders of reciprocating easines for the EC-2 calro ships which the West Coast shipyards are turning out in ret- The Journal of ELECTRICAL WORKERS and Operators Larry E. W. Seatbol, a membe, of the international Brotherhood of Electrical Workers since 1909. Seatrld is an enthusiastic technician deeply iteb.rested in all minor and major problems of eletricity. and he told the representative of the ELECTRICAL WORKERS' JOURNAL what he liked about his job was that "We never wait for materials. If we don't have na,- telishl we improvise as best we can." Seaol~d expects to have 1,500 electricians on this particular job by June, 1943. Undernqeath the long line of buildings that front the arm of the sea is a tunnel one-quarter of a mile long called "The Big Tube." It is built of corrugated 10- gauge pipe and is seven feet in diameter. Both ends of the tWnel have steel and concrete bulkheads. At one end a floodwater pump is located. The south wall of the tunnel suppurts a four-inch oxygen pipe, a 16-inch air pipe, a 10-incb water pipe, a three-inch steam supply line. , two-inch steam return, a two-inch hot water supply and a one and one-half-inch ho water t return with pressure varying from 25 pounds in the three-inch steam supply line to 85 pounds in the air and water lines. The north wall supports three electrical lines of 440 volts; three electrical lines of 220 volts, and two lines of 110 volts. Each lodd-umbered way--six in all -houses substations which transform the 11,500 volts into the abtve-m.entione.d 440, 220, and 110. From eah of these stations a manhole leads directly to the tunnel.
