APPENDIX C: GENERAL AND SPECIFIC MATERIAL DESIGNATIONS The following lists of General and Specific material designations with their definitions are offered as recommendations for use in English-language records based on the 1SBD(<strong>NBM</strong>). Terms in the right-hand column represent only a sample from the range of materials currently available. General material designations Graphic Hologram A two-dimensional image (or set of images) produced in its original form by such techniques as drawing, painting or photography. Graphics are normally accessible to the naked eye, though in one instance (stereographs) special viewing equipment is needed for their use. A three-dimensional image made by a process based on the principle of light interference. Kit see Multi-media Microform Motion picture Multi-media or kit Object Sound recording Video-recording Micro-record of text or other visual material. (The term "microform" should he reserved for micro-records whose use is conditional on the availability of specialized reading equipment.) A length of film, with or without a magnetic or optical sound track, bearing a sequence of images which create the illusion of movement when projected in rapid succession. Material comprising two or more distinct media or differing forms of the same medium, no one of which is identifiable as being of primary importance. Usually intended for use as a unit. Three-dimensional artefact. The term may be used to refer either to a single object or to an assemblage of separate parts. A recording of sound, unaccompanied by visual images. A recording of visual images, usually in motion and with sound accompaniment, designed for playback via a television receiver. 70
