In November 2001, the Northern Area Health Board commissioned a study to <strong>in</strong>vestigate the <strong>health</strong> needs <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>people</strong> <strong>liv<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>glas from the perspective <strong>of</strong> <strong>people</strong> <strong>liv<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> the area <strong>and</strong> also service providers work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
the area. The Health Strategy – ‘Quality <strong>and</strong> Fairness for You’ recognises that the <strong>health</strong> system must respond<br />
to <strong>people</strong>’s needs <strong>and</strong> that services must be organised, located <strong>and</strong> accessed <strong>in</strong> a way that takes greater<br />
account <strong>of</strong> the needs <strong>and</strong> preferences <strong>of</strong> the community they serve.<br />
The work conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> this report was undertaken by the Department <strong>of</strong> Community Health <strong>and</strong> General<br />
Practice, Tr<strong>in</strong>ity College. The f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs will greatly assist the future plann<strong>in</strong>g, development <strong>and</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong> <strong>health</strong><br />
services <strong>in</strong> the F<strong>in</strong>glas area <strong>and</strong> may also be used as a model for the development <strong>of</strong> services <strong>in</strong> other areas.<br />
The Board will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to work closely with local communities <strong>and</strong> other <strong>health</strong> care providers to ensure that<br />
properly <strong>in</strong>tegrated <strong>health</strong> services will lead to better outcomes, better <strong>health</strong> <strong>and</strong> better cost-effectiveness.<br />
I wish to congratulate <strong>and</strong> express my appreciation to each person, <strong>and</strong> to the local community at large, for <strong>their</strong><br />
participation <strong>and</strong> co-operation with the survey. I also extend my thanks to all <strong>of</strong> those <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> collect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />
