Editorial
Anything is possible
The range of services and performance on offer
from Faymonville is already particularly extensive.
And it will be even more so with the creation of Max
Trailer, a new group brand (to be launched in March).
This brand covers a range of products that are
‘less sophisticated’ than the current Faymonville semi
trailers and are more standardized but with the same
high quality. It targets markets and haulage firms that
don't necessary require all the special features of the
Faymonville product range.
This further evolution also enables the group to extend
its range downwards. The complete program now
covers a very wide spectrum which goes from basic
vehicles to the most advanced semi-trailers. Something
to satisfy every client's taste. It is also worth pointing
out that an entirely new strategy and commercial
approach will be introduced for the Max Trailer.
Beyond the actual launch of a new brand,
this development is proof of positive developments
within the Faymonville Group during a period that is
nevertheless fairly difficult for most of the players in the
haulage sector. A positive development which is also
revealed by the growing operations in Brazil, Russia
and Asia for example (see articles in this issue).
With Faymonville, more than ever, anything is possible.
Alain Faymonville
A RANGE OF FLATBEDS
For all brands of mo
The Faymonville modules of transportation units with between two and
six lines of axles can be designed in such a way as to be able to attach
a number of different accessories, particularly flatbeds. These accessories
can also be used with the modules made by other manufacturers. A very
welcome interchangeability feature for the client and one of the markets
of the future for Faymonville.
The Modulmax range includes modules with two,
three, four, five and six lines of axles, a length of
between three and nine metres for loads that can
exceed 1,000 tons. One of the special features of
these modules lies in the fact that they are all provided
with coupling systems both front and back which
enables the coupling to different types of flatbeds.
Three types of flatbed
Three types of extra low flatbeds can be
coupled to the transportation modules. An
explanation is provided by Rainer Noe, head of
our Modular Heavy Duty Systems : « To start
off with what we have here is what is termed as
a "transformer" bed, because it is particularly
suited for the transportation of large industrial
transformers. But that's not all... This flatbed also
includes a metal beam running the entire width
of the system which enables the bed to widen
from 250 to 300 mm in width for useful loads
of up to 300 tons. The beds are equipped
with a comb-like coupling system which provides
the option of adding some extension elements
and to thus increase the load length. It is also
worthwhile to point out that these beds have
very low loading heights. » The second type of
bed is equipped with a vessel carrier.
Rainer Noe : « This solution is made up of
two beams which can be moved hydraulically
to adapt to the size of the vessel.
The greater the diameter of the vessel or tank,
the more distance there is between the beams.
For example, when the width of the engine
base is three metres, the flatbed can stretch to
a width of 4.70 metres. It is available both with
telescopic beams or non-telescopic extension
beams, whichever is preferred. »
The third type of flatbed is the "Public works"
variety. « This bed has a central beam which
can be telescopic or not, once again depending
on the client's requirements. It enables public
works machinery to be carried 'astride' the bed.
This means that the central part of the
construction machinery rests on the central beam
with the wheels or tracks overhanging on either
side », Rainer Noe told us.
Interchangeability
These beds are provided for the S and G
Faymonville modules, but also for those of other
makes, as our modular system manager once
again underlines : « The beds, when coupled to
the S and G modules we have designed, enable
the composition of road trains capable of

PRODUCT TO THE MAX
dules !
transporting a multitude of different kinds of load.
But we go one step further because the coupling
heads can be made to suit the client's own
modules. There are some small differences
between manufacturers in the conception of
their modules- the diameter of a coupling pin
here, the length of a lynch pin there - but all in
all the principle remains the same. Therefore,
we have worked with this and can provide our
clients with the coupling head that suits the
module they use. »
This is a relatively new market for Faymonville
and one that is expected to grow. « This market is
for top of the range and fairly sophisticated
products because one has to adapt the coupling
heads to the models. This market is therefore
based on interchangeability with other
manufacturer tractors and we are clearly hoping
to develop this niche », Rainer Noe concludes.
A "transformer" flatbed with a metal beam running the entire width of the load area with a thickness of between 250 and 300 mm.
The vessel carrier's special feature are the
beams which can be shifted to obtain a width
of up to 4.70 metres.
To transport public work construction
machinery, Faymonville offers a central
beam bed which can be either telescopic
or not, depending on the client's needs.
The Faymonville load beds can be coupled to the S and G modules of our own design,
but also to modules of other manufacturers.
POWERMAX VERSION 2
Even more effective
Following the Bauma Fair 2010, where it was presented for the first time, the Powermax has
kept evolving. It now meets the three objectives that the Faymonville engineers had designed
it even better.
The Powermax is a modular semi-trailer which stands out for its
motorized and braking axles. There are three operating modes :
Assist, SPMT (autopowered) and Trailer. Rainer Noe, head of
our Modular Heavy Duty Systems department, points out the new
features that set it apart from the first version : « The Powermax
is designed to meet a three-fold objective which can be clearly
seen in the three available modes of operation. First of all we have
the Assist mode which aims to help the tractor pull the semi up
slopes. On this point it's worth noting that the motor of the Powermax
version 2 now develops a greater pulling force which can reach
The Powermax version 2
is provided with a more
powerful motor which
ensures that in Assist mode
one can travel at speeds
of up to 13 km/h.
a peak of 240 kW (326 hp). This additional power enables
the Assist function to be used up to a speed of 13 km/h. In actual
fact, when the speed drops below 13 km/h on a slope, the
system starts pushing automatically. The vehicle is therefore
better suited for its task and enables its usage to be optimised.
Besides, the SAF motorised axles are now equipped with drum
brakes which can be serviced without having to dismantle
the hydraulic motor. This is a great advantage for the user. »
It is worthwhile underlining that the Assist mode aims to replace
a 6x4 or 8x4 pushing tractor.
Two speeds
PRODUCT TO THE MAX
The second mode of operations is the SMPT or autopower mode.
Rainer Noe : « When in autopower mode, the Powermax can run
at two speeds When loaded, the speed is reduced, when necessary
down to 6 km/h. When empty, one can cut the power to one of the
two axle lines and just leave one axle power assisted. This motorised
line of axles now enables a speed of 13 km/h to be reached
because it can take advantage of the entire oil supply. I wish to
point out here that the most powerful motor used on the Powermax
is a last generation Euro 5 engine supplied by Mercedes-Benz. »
The SMPT mode enables the semi (8 hydraulic motors in the wheels)
to ‘shift’ up to 400 tons of useful load.
Another novelty : the powerpack element (the engine block placed
behind the semi which powers the motorised axles) does not
clear the height of the semi. This provides greater flexibility in terms
of load distribution. The Powerpack element can also be tilted
hydraulically in order to overcome obstacles by increasing
the ground clearance.
For the sake of completeness, it is also worth noting the third
operating mode which is the 'trailer' mode. In this instance, the modular
block operates like a normal free-wheeling semi. In this
position, the vehicle can travel at 80 km/h and has drum brakes
on each axle. It can therefore travel without any problem on the
public roads.
The series production is now up and running and many examples
have already found buyers in France, Russia and Italy.
P. 04
The powerpack does not clear
the height of the modular semi.

INDEPENDENT SUSPENSIONS
Up to 12 t. per
axle line
Faymonville now offers independent suspensions.
A novelty? Turning to wishbone axle links.
The range of Faymonville solutions increases once again.
After the pendelaxle we now add an independent suspension
with wishbone axle links. The advantages according to
Gilbert Brüls, Head of Development : « German legislation
allows a load of 12 tons per axle line with independent
suspensions. With fixed axle bodies, the load cannot exceed
10 tons. The turning angle is better than with traditional
systems. Finally, the height of the load platform is just
850 mm for on road travel, which is very low. »
The independent suspension has essentially been conceived
for the Multimax. G. Brüls : « The absence of an axle body
reduces the unladen weight and enables the creation of
double or triple telescopic Multimax flatbeds with a very
low loading height. What one can do with 6 axles, one
can now do with 5 axles and 12 tons per line. What's more,
the stability of a semi-trailer is much improved by the double
wishbone axle links seeing as the load surface remains parallel
to the ground whatever the height of the suspension. »
G-MODULE SL
New levels of
performance
The recent issue of Go to the Max (no. 17) presented you with a summary
of the various variations of the G-module (G-UT, G-ST, G-MT et
G-SL). Today, the G-SL offers new levels of performance. Rainer Noe,
head of our Modular Heavy Duty Systems department, reveals these
new features : « The new version of the G-SL this time offers an axle
line load of 45 tons. By way of comparison, on the ST version designed
for the European market, the maximum load is of 36 tons.
The bending moment, which determines the sturdiness of the system,
has also been increased and is now 25% greater that that of the
ST version. What's more, we have increased the permitted point
loads on the load area. In real terms, this means that the surface
capable of supporting the load is now even greater. »
The first modules go to Paris
PRODUCT TO THE MAX
Designed for markets outside Europe, the G-SL module is constantly evolving.
These developments increase its performance and thus reinforce its position on the world market.
Apart from this, this new version of the G-SL module still has
a turning angle of 60° thanks to a pivoting system - a greater angle
than that offered by the competition - and accepts all accessories,
just like the other G modules. It is available from 2 till 6 axle
line versions.
The SL version is fundamental on the international market.
It is particularly suited for difficult road conditions and falls within
a category of engines which, along with the units in the S-module
series, cover 80% of the world market. A market in which
Faymonville must therefore play an important role. The first examples
of this new variant will be on show at the Intermat trade show
in Paris which takes place from the 16th to the 21st of April 2012.
The technical solution chosen for our independent
suspension : wishbone axle links.
The G-SL module now offers
even more outstanding levels
of performance.
FAYMONVILLE
From specialist manufacturers to global
Alongside its development of the used market, Faymonville is also
extending its range of financing tools. Today, manufacturers are
becoming global suppliers which includes sales of new and used
vehicles, financing and, obviously enough, servicing.
P. 06
The Faymonville company is primarily known for
its manufacturing of semi-trailers for special
haulage. To this end, the company relies on its
production units in Belgium, Luxembourg and
Poland. But its sphere of activity is not 'limited' to
this alone. Alain Faymonville, General Manager,
specifies : « Various different satellite
activities gravitate around our core semi-trailer
production activity for exceptional load
transportation. We're talking about service, sales
of new vehicles, sale of used vehicles following
reconditioning and financing (see text box). »
Why financing in addition to traditional
manufacturing activities? Historically speaking,
this can be explained through our used vehicle
sales activity. Alain Faymonville : « In actual fact,
the repurchasing of used vehicles and their reconditioning
with the aim of selling them on are
standard activities for manufacturers. But to purchase
these vehicles, the buyers often hope to
be able to access some kind of financing tool.
THE VARIOUS
FAYMONVILLE BUSINESSES
Nowadays in order to play a leading role on
a global scale, Faymonville over the course of
the years has developed a number of different
businesses. These include :
• Construction of towed units for special
haulage (Faymonville SA and F.E.L. SA)
• Sale of semi-trailers and used vehicle sales
(Faymonville Distribution SA)
• Semi-trailer financing (Famonville Lease SA).
Rental, leasing, short and long term rental of
tractors and semi-trailers (Renting Car-wTS)
• Service and after sales service activities
(Faymonville Service SA)
So we decided, for a variety of reasons, that we
would offer our own financing formulas for used
vehicles. For this kind of vehicle, the 'service'
and 'finance' aspects are closely connected.
Consequently, we started to finance our new
products and diversify our offer, primarily through
the Renting Car-WTS division which offers leasing
and short and long term rental programs for single
vehicles, including tractors and semi-trailers,
and not just for special haulage. Nowadays,
each division can rely on the other group division
to find the solution best suited to our client's needs
and wishes. The goal for Faymonville is to become
the provider of a global package which includes
tractor units, semi-trailers, financing, service
and the buying back of used material with reconditioning
and resale associated, if necessary,
with the appropriate financing opportunities.
So we've then gone full circle. »
The only one in the sector
It is after all a logical development which one
has also found, in recent years, among truck
manufacturers. « But in our sector, we are the
only manufacturers to offer a global formula of
this kind », Alain Faymonville is quick to point
out. This global offer and this development of
the financing aspect is also explained by the
specific nature of the sector. « We are more
flexible than a bank, we have a better understanding
of the value of the material and we are
in a better position to place the material on the
market. Plus, we can manage the risk better
in relation to the client's repayment capacity.
A bank doesn't know this business and has a
favourable view of companies such as ours getting
involved in financing because we have a better

BRAZIL
The paradise of
wind power
Currently growing at full speed, Brazil is increasing
its infrastructure projects, particularly in the
sustainable energy sector. All the major wind
turbine manufacturers are involved. And Faymonville
along with them.
RUSSIA
The Faymonville
modules win out
PRODUCT TO THE MAX
Russia is currently engaged in the upgrading of its power stations, oil refineries, metal works etc.
This means plenty of specialist haulage, shipments which rely more and more often on Faymonville
products. In particular the Modulmax range of vehicles.
P. 08
Brazil has very ambitious wind power projects.
A great opportunity for Faymonville.
The paradise of wind power, Brazil is now launching a
number of projects that rely on this technology. The Telemax
and Brazilmax extendible semis (see GTTM No. 17) are
therefore highly prized. Firstly for the shipment of wind
turbine blades, secondly for the towers and the nacelles.
« Faymonville has been operating on the Brazilian market for
2 years now and it has already sold as many as fifty Telemax,
while the recent launch of the Brazilmax has already created
a good deal of interest. It must be said that the wind farm
projects involve thousands of towers. And seeing as
Faymonville is a leader in wind tower transportation
solutions... Many major Brazilian shipping companies such
as Saraiva, Cruz de Malta or even Makro, already seem
to rely on us », explains Paul Hönen, head of sales for
America and Asia.
Faymonville has many clients in Russia who are heavily engaged
in the upgrading of works on power stations. These haulage companies
are mainly engaged in the shipping of the transformers
and refinery parts, for which they turn to Faymonville material for
a variety of reasons.
Reputation
First of all, the Faymonville brand enjoys an excellent reputation
in these parts, based essentially on the quality of its products.
The Multimax, Megamax and other Variomax vehicles have
in actual fact granted and still grant their users a large degree of
satisfaction. One must now add the Modulmax series to the list.
What the Russian specialist haulage companies particularly
appreciate is primarily the products' interchangeability,
The Russian specialist haulage companies take an active
part in the upgrading of Russia's power stations.
which includes the fact that its products can be combined
with those of other manufacturers. They can also take advantage
of very fast deliveries of the modules available in stock. This can
be decisive for projects where the haulage company is required
to provide a very fast and efficient service. Furthermore,
the modules are particularly suited to the severe climates
thanks to their metallised finish, an industrial process which
guarantees the utmost resistance and a greater useful life of
the machine's bodywork.
Finally, Faymonville is capable of providing an excellent
technical assistance service on site. This service will be further
improved with the upcoming opening of a new maintenance
workshop in the Moscow region (see elsewhere in this issue).
Faymonville takes advantage of the great name it has
made for itself in Russia.

PRODUCT TO THE MAX
TELE, VARIO
AT Special Transport are spicing things up
The Finnish company AT Special Transport (Ahola Group)
have once again relied on Faymonville by buying a Telemax
and a Variomax. A history of spicing things up...
The Finnish transport company usually carries bridge sections and
industrial filters. For its heavy loads, it has chosen the Vario and Multi
models while its long loads are handled by the Telemaxes. The Vario
ordered by AT Special Transport is a very flexible vehicle, Manuela
Raw, head of sales, points out: « The Vario will be capable of carrying
tanks or pipes but its outer beams can be positioned in the middle of
the semi in order for engines to be positioned straddling the beams.
As far as the Telemax chosen by the Finnish company, it will be the
longest ever produced by Faymonville up to now, as it can extend to
55.4 metres if necessary. It's purpose? Hauling wind turbines parts
and very long bridge sections. »
In Finland, Faymonville has depended for a long time now on its
official partner : Car Office Roponen Oy.
The Multi 5 bought by AT Special Transport
through Car Office primarily in order to transport
bridge sections.
SWEDEN
Tabergs Åkeri has chosen Variomax
Tabergs Åkeri has been seduced by the
qualities of the Variomax 3 + 5.
Tabergs Åkeri (Sweden) chose a Variomax
in November of 2011. Twenty haulage
missions later, she's not regretting her choice.
On the contrary.
Tabergs Åkeri, a transport haulage specialist, purchased
a Variomax 3 + 5 with pendelaxles and an excavator
platform. They ship stone crushers, military tanks,
construction machinery and fork lift trucks. Matthias
Gustafsson, head of their vehicle pool, explains the
choice : « We chose Variomax for its load capacity,
its flexibility in adapting to different kinds of loads and
its sturdiness. »
The company also appreciates Faymonville's cooperative
structure, the quality of its service and particularly its
excellent spare part delivery service.
A MULTI-AXLE FOR NAVAUX
6 Axles and
double extending
The French company Louis-Philippe Navaux of Carvin
has bought a 6 axle Multimax stepframe trailer with
pendle axles and with the extension starting behind
the second row of axles!
This Multimax is both specialised and multi-purpose. Thomas
Kohnen, an engineer with Faymonville : « In actual fact the
extension is located between the 2nd and 3rd line of axles.
This enables us to share the load approximately 50/50 between
the front and back when extended. Another particular feature is
the suspension travel (600 mm) and the considerable 60° turning
angle of the pendelaxles. The first two axles are counter-steering,
which improves manoeuvrability. The Multimax is also equipped
with a tilting gooseneck which guarantees the stability of the flat
bed even on uneven ground. The two front axle lines can be
connected to the hydraulics of the gooseneck when the semi
trailer is not extended. This enables the pressure to be distributed
onto the gooseneck and avoids the two front axles being
overloaded. Two gooseneck loads are thus possible:
18 or 23 tons. When not active the gooseneck can bear
maximum imposed loads of 30 tons ». This semi-trailer is
available in 3 widths (2,540 mm, 2,740 mm as in this case,
and 2,990 mm) and in double or triple extending versions.
RUSSIAN WORKSHOP
Faymonville is
to set up a
service workshop
in Russia
Russia is an important market for Faymonville
and by the end of the year it will be able to rely
on a new service centre representing the Belgian
manufacturer.
AFTER SALES
NETWORK MAX
A team that's there to listen
Six people in the Faymonville After Sales team, managed by Viktor Palm. Six people who are
there to listen to what you have to say. But who is who?
The After Sales department is a part of
Faymonville Service. What do they do? Client
contact, vehicle rescue (2 mobile workshops),
training of garage personnel who ask for it,
complaint management. The department is
also involved in quality, Viktor Palm (24 years
of experience with Faymonville) being the link
up with the design division and the one who
passes on client technical requests and comments.
It should be pointed out that the department
can handle requests in 6 different
languages.
The workshop is located in a strategic location. The new
workshop will actually be set up 30 km east of Moscow,
in a region of particular importance from an industrial point
of view. In addition to service activities in the strict sense
the workshop will also handle spare part stocking,
Faymonville and MAX Trailer product marketing and used
vehicles sales.
The Russian market is of great importance to
Faymonville. That's why they've decided to build a
service centre there.
CTE,
OUR ROMANIAN PARTNER
High level of
after sales service
Faymonville can now rely on a new partner, the CTE
company. A very sound enterprise with a well-coordinated
sales policy and a very efficient after sales service.
Early 2011, Faymonville and CTE decide to enter a
collaboration in order to supply the Romanian market.
Christoph Prümmer, usually responsible for this market,
explains : « CTE was looking for a partnership in the
specialist haulage sector to complete its range of offer.
For Faymonville the opportunity was too good to turn down
seeing as CTE already had a showroom, a spare parts
department and the necessary infrastructure required to
represent them. Their technicians have attended a training
course at our premises and Codrut Negrei has been selected
as sales manager for Faymonville products. »
CTE distributes the entire range of Faymonville products,
with Multimax and Megamax as its leading products.
In August 2011, an event was organised to introduce the new
partner and proceed with the delivery of one 7 axle Multimax
to a major Romanian company. CTE has already sold
something like 30 Faymonville vehicles.
CTE has been Faymonville's partner for the Romanian
market for the last year.
INFRASTRUCTURES
The company is going ahead with the
extension of its service workshop.
Yves Faymonville, Production Process Manager
tells us more: « A new 600 m 2 annex which
includes a 24 metres sandblasting and metallization
booth as well as a spray booth of the
same length. This workshop will be able to
process products of all brands and allows us
to recondition our client's vehicles. The workshop
will be operational by the end of the
month of May 2012. »
Another development, a logistics centre to be
shared by the Belgian, Luxembourg and
Polish factories. This centre will rely on a
warehousing system christened ‘Shuttle XP’.
Yves Faymonville : « The aim is to rationalise
stocking space, improve productivity
even further and optimize restocking.
The system is totally automated for small
items and semi-automated for the rest which
are stocked on pallets. The system is of the
'goods to man' type, that is to say that it
presents the product directly to the operator. »
Software informs the operator of the number
of articles that need to be collected and the
Shuttle organises the collection sequence
reducing the shuttle movements to a minimum.
« This method enables collection times
to be reduced, space and time to be saved,
but also it helps to improve operator
safety », Yves Faymonville further underlines.
And there's an
ecological aspect as well
Faymonville has also invested in some photovoltaic
panels. The explanation is provided
SERVICE MAX
Effectiveness and ecology
The latest development to date regarding Faymonville infrastructures : the expansion of the
painting workshop, a new logistics centre and the installation of a photo-voltaic system.
All of this is going on at Bullange-Bütgenbach (Belgium).
The photo-voltaic installation should
produce the equivalent of 20% of
Faymonville's annual energy
consumption.
THE PHOTO-VOLTAIC
INSTALLATION IN
NUMBERS
• 3 installations producing 250 kWp each
• 1064 panels/installation
• Surface area: 5,219,4 m 2
• Production : 637,602 kWh/year
by Thomas Cypers, head of Certification,
Regulations and Energy : « We're talking
about three installations on three
buildings : Faymonville Service, Faymonville
AG and the CNC Hall. The production
capacity is 750 kWp, which amounts to
20% of our annual consumption. This will
reduce our CO 2 emissions by 182 tons a
year. Faymonville will continue investing in
renewable energies, but also in energy
saving, in order to reduce its consumption.
The entire world has now realised that the
cheapest energy is the energy one doesn't
consume… »
company. It is a presentation of models or activities
undertaken by the company along with videos of
specialist transportations.
Now, if you wish to use YouTube to show your videos
of vehicles for special haulage, you can, if you wish,
The new technical hall at the Bullange site.
An additional tool in striving for quality.
NEWS
Faymonville AG on YouTube : use our space to
show your specialist haulage videos.
New technical hall at Bullange
As of next summer, the Bullange site will have a new
technical hall. A hall which will primarily be used for
client training, testing and client demonstration.
It will be during the summer of 2012 - in the month
of August to be precise, that a new technical showroom
will open its doors at the Bullange Faymonville production
site. This technical hall will stretch for 2,500m 2 and
will also include two hydraulic ramps which can carry
up to 32 tons. This important load capacity will allow
them to handle the company's semi-trailer range.
Yves Faymonville, the company's production process
manager, explains the reason behind this new hall:
« This hall will be used for the final assembly of the
modules, for technical testing and trials and also for
client training programs. The clients will also be able to
watch production demonstrations here. One can think
of the hall as an additional element in our constant search
for quality ».
