POWERMAX VERSION 2
Even more effective
Following the Bauma Fair 2010, where it was presented for the first time, the Powermax has
kept evolving. It now meets the three objectives that the Faymonville engineers had designed
it even better.
The Powermax is a modular semi-trailer which stands out for its
motorized and braking axles. There are three operating modes :
Assist, SPMT (autopowered) and Trailer. Rainer Noe, head of
our Modular Heavy Duty Systems department, points out the new
features that set it apart from the first version : « The Powermax
is designed to meet a three-fold objective which can be clearly
seen in the three available modes of operation. First of all we have
the Assist mode which aims to help the tractor pull the semi up
slopes. On this point it's worth noting that the motor of the Powermax
version 2 now develops a greater pulling force which can reach
The Powermax version 2
is provided with a more
powerful motor which
ensures that in Assist mode
one can travel at speeds
of up to 13 km/h.
a peak of 240 kW (326 hp). This additional power enables
the Assist function to be used up to a speed of 13 km/h. In actual
fact, when the speed drops below 13 km/h on a slope, the
system starts pushing automatically. The vehicle is therefore
better suited for its task and enables its usage to be optimised.
Besides, the SAF motorised axles are now equipped with drum
brakes which can be serviced without having to dismantle
the hydraulic motor. This is a great advantage for the user. »
It is worthwhile underlining that the Assist mode aims to replace
a 6x4 or 8x4 pushing tractor.
Two speeds
PRODUCT TO THE MAX
The second mode of operations is the SMPT or autopower mode.
Rainer Noe : « When in autopower mode, the Powermax can run
at two speeds When loaded, the speed is reduced, when necessary
down to 6 km/h. When empty, one can cut the power to one of the
two axle lines and just leave one axle power assisted. This motorised
line of axles now enables a speed of 13 km/h to be reached
because it can take advantage of the entire oil supply. I wish to
point out here that the most powerful motor used on the Powermax
is a last generation Euro 5 engine supplied by Mercedes-Benz. »
The SMPT mode enables the semi (8 hydraulic motors in the wheels)
to ‘shift’ up to 400 tons of useful load.
Another novelty : the powerpack element (the engine block placed
behind the semi which powers the motorised axles) does not
clear the height of the semi. This provides greater flexibility in terms
of load distribution. The Powerpack element can also be tilted
hydraulically in order to overcome obstacles by increasing
the ground clearance.
For the sake of completeness, it is also worth noting the third
operating mode which is the 'trailer' mode. In this instance, the modular
block operates like a normal free-wheeling semi. In this
position, the vehicle can travel at 80 km/h and has drum brakes
on each axle. It can therefore travel without any problem on the
public roads.
The series production is now up and running and many examples
have already found buyers in France, Russia and Italy.
