A Reproductive Health Needs Assessment <strong>in</strong> <strong>Myanmar</strong><br />
Team selection<br />
The national members of the <strong>assessment</strong> team were selected to be representative of a range of<br />
multiple perspectives <strong>in</strong> the field of <strong>reproductive</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Myanmar</strong>. Individuals from a<br />
number of government departments, as well as national non-governmental organizations and<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational organizations participated <strong>in</strong> the <strong>assessment</strong> field work. The team also<br />
comprised a number of non-national experts <strong>in</strong> <strong>reproductive</strong> <strong>health</strong>, who help to facilitate the<br />
<strong>assessment</strong> process. A list of the team members is given below.<br />

Meet<strong>in</strong>gs with policy makers<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g the first two days of the team’s activities <strong>in</strong> <strong>Myanmar</strong>, meet<strong>in</strong>gs were held with key<br />
policy makers from both the Government and the <strong>in</strong>ternational organizations active <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Myanmar</strong>. These meet<strong>in</strong>gs were an opportunity for the <strong>assessment</strong> team to <strong>in</strong>form these key<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividuals of the proposed goals and scope of work of the <strong>assessment</strong>. The <strong>in</strong>put received<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g these meet<strong>in</strong>gs was also valuable <strong>in</strong> def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g the f<strong>in</strong>al content and process of the<br />
<strong>assessment</strong>.<br />
Workshop of key stakeholders<br />
On 13 May 1998 a workshop of key stakeholders was convened <strong>in</strong> Yangon. This workshop<br />
brought together approximately 30 <strong>in</strong>dividuals from 15 <strong>in</strong>stitutions and organizations that<br />
play an active role <strong>in</strong> <strong>reproductive</strong> <strong>health</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Myanmar</strong>. The aims of this workshop were to<br />
familiarize the key stakeholders with the <strong>assessment</strong> activities, and to receive feedback from<br />
them regard<strong>in</strong>g areas of focus for the <strong>assessment</strong>. The participants were split <strong>in</strong>to nonhomogenous<br />
groups so that a number of different experiences and areas of <strong>in</strong>terest were<br />
represented with<strong>in</strong> each group. These groups were asked to discuss the concept of<br />
<strong>reproductive</strong> <strong>health</strong>, and identify key areas of focus for <strong>Myanmar</strong>. Birth spac<strong>in</strong>g, unwanted<br />
pregnancy/abortion, maternal <strong>health</strong>, RTIs/STDs and adolescent <strong>reproductive</strong> <strong>health</strong> were the<br />
priority areas identified by each group. Areas of <strong>reproductive</strong> <strong>health</strong> considered of lesser<br />
