HAMBURG DOM
Hamburg Dom – to be
organised by a private
organiser in future?
The three signatories of
the “Memorandum of Understanding”:
(f.l.) Berndt Klempe,
Landesverband des Ambulanten
Gewerbes e.V., state
councillor from the Department
for Economy, Transport and
Innovation Andreas Rieckhoff,
and Manfred Pluschies from the
Schaustellerverband Hamburg
von 1884 e.V.
Text: Ralf Schmitt
Photos: Heiko Schimanzik, Comtent GmbH
On 5 th December 2012, the Hamburg Ministry of
Economic Affairs, Transport and Innovation as
well as the Showman Association Hamburg 1884
e.V. and the Landesverband des Ambulanten
Gewerbes und der Schausteller e.V. (Regional Association
of the Showman Industry) signed a
“Memorandum of Understanding” to preserve the
attractiveness and the success of the Hamburg
Dom.
During the signing at the Ministry of Economic Affairs,
state councillor Andreas Rieckhof said about the
agreement: "The Hamburg Dom is one of the most significant
Volksfest events in Germany, and is very popular
among the citizenry of the Hamburg metropolitan
region. Furthermore, it functions as a social focal point
for all age groups, contributes to the success of
tourism in Hamburg, and safeguards many jobs in
medium-sized showman enterprises. I would like to
thank both Showman Associations and their members
for contributing to this success by their commitment.”
The Showman Associations
and the Ministry of
Economic Affairs,
Transport and Innovation
agreed on making
common efforts not
only to preserve, but
also further develop the
attractiveness of the
Hamburg Dom events.
The "Memorandum of
Understanding” also
stipulates that the Verein
zur Förderung der
Volksfeste und Jahrmärkte in Hamburg e.V. (Society
for the Promotion of Hamburg Volksfest and Fair
Events) and the DOM-Promotion und Veranstaltungs
GmbH, in coordination with the Ministry as the organiser,
will be responsible for the funding and realisation
of advertising measures. In addition, the ministry will
support the measures taken by the Society and the
DOM-Promotion und Veranstaltungs GmbH to the
best of its ability within the limits of its resources.
Somewhat surprisingly the sky turned black for the future
of the "Hamburg Dom” only two months after the
end of the event. In his annual report, the President of
the Hamburg Landesrechnungshof State Audit Office,
Stefan Schulz, also focused on the large events organised
by the city, the "Hamburg Dom” and the Hamburg
Port Anniversary. Schulz reported that the city
authorities, as organiser of the Hamburg Dom, subsidised
the event with EUR 2.2 million, and thereby
avoided the necessity of increasing stand fees. To
quote Herr Schulz: "At the end of the day, it cannot be
the task of the State to co-finance rides on carousels
or the consumption of sausages.” He urged the Hamburg
city authorities to "seriously think about handing
over the organisation of the Dom and the Port Anniversary
– just as was the case with the Alstervergnügen
event and the Christmas Market on the Rathausmarkt
– to private organisers.” Up until the time of going
to press, the Hamburg Showman Associations
had not yet issued any further statement on this explosive
issue. The spokeswoman of the Hamburg
Wirtschaftsbehörde, or Department of Economy, Helma
Krstanoski, commented: "Splitting the internal refund
of EUR 2.2 million made to the Department of Finances
for the use of the Heiligengeistfeld fairground
between the users would be tantamount to tripling the
showman fees. This would put the traditional
Hamburg Dom at risk.”
The german Princess Gloria von Thurn
und Taxis, is a regular visitor to the
“Alpina-Bahn” from the Bruch family at its
Wiesn appearances in Munich.
At the last Oktoberfest, she also took several
rides in her "favourite coaster”, as she herself
proclaims. This is proved by a glance into the
paybox of the coaster, where an older black and
white photo shows Gloria as a young mother with
her children in a coaster train during one of her
former Oktoberfest visits.
New owner: In November last year, Sascha
Schaak from Zülpich took over the Bertazzon
Alpine Bob “Hawaii Swing” from the Leipzig
Lehmann firm.
The ride, built in the mid 1980s, once toured under
the management of the Ott firm from
Bavaria. Over the years, further owners were
Renoldi, Renoldi-Schäfer, Münch, and Rosenbach,
up until Manfred Eckl from Munich took
over the attraction (which had noticeably suffered
from the many changes of ownership) and
thoroughly restored its technical and visual appearance.
Eckl was rewarded for his investment
in the ride with approval for the Munich Oktoberfest.
This was only a short "Hawaii” interlude
though, before Sascha Schaak took over the attraction.
It is his first ride attraction, as up to now
he toured the Hook-a-Duck of his parents. In
January, the ride was built up on the company
premises in Euskirchen in freezing temperatures
for renovation. The first venue under the
new owner will be Köln-Mülheim, and according
to the owner the attraction has also been approved
to Bonn-Beul (held at Easter), Bad
Godesberg, Minden, Wesel, Moers, Eisleben
and Krefeld. The "Hawaii Swing” is 18 metres in
diameter, 8 metres high and has electrical requirements
of 95 kW.
FRÜHJAHRSKIRMES IN SOLINGEN
Text: Michael Petersen
This year, the Solingen Frühlingskirmes will
open its gates on Friday, 15 th March and end
after the traditional duration of one week on
Sunday, 24 th March.
In the last few years, recreational behaviour has
considerably changed. For many people Friday
has become the most popular "day to go out”, a fact
that proves quite beneficial for the fair event. Many
a guest will look forward to once again visiting the
fairground at the Klingenhalle after the long winter.
The event will be opened by the Solingen Lord Mayor,
Norbert Feith, inside the new gastronomic tent
placed between Fuhrmann’s beverage outlet and
the swing grill from Dierichs. The traditional beer
tapping ceremony will be followed by a stroll across
the fairground. The Showman Association Rhein-
Ruhr-Wupper e.V. has continued its successful
work, and will once again present a prominently occupied
fairground with three novelties for Solingen.
With Schneider’s "Pirates Adventure”, the largest
transportable pirate-themed attraction will make its
first appearance as top attraction in Solingen this
year. Further novelties for Solingen will be the
"Heartbreaker” from Bartels and a giant slide. While
Hartmann’s "Sky Trip” will whisk its passengers high
up into the sky, the Musik Express from Milz-v.d.
Bosch will offer a more "down-to-earth" ride experience.
Visitors will also encounter the "Breakdance”
from Klinge and the "Drive in” dodgem track from
Schmidt, along with the simulator (Sterzenbach),
where they will experience sensory delusions.
Younger fairground visitors will be able to enjoy
three ride attractions; namely Bauer’s "Saturn”, and
"Mini-Skooter” as well as the "Orient Zauber” kiddie
ride (Schmidt), and the "Water-Walking-Balls” from
Phillip. The supporting programme will include a
Family Day with noticeably reduced prices at all attractions
on the Wednesday, and on the second
opening Saturday the showmen will reward the
public with a colourful fireworks display. The Solingen
Frühjahrskirmes will be advertised in an extensive
promotional campaign. In addition to 150
huge posters, large banners will be deployed
throughout the city once again. Moreover, the Solingen
daily newspaper and the local radio station will
be included in the advertising strategy. ■
FRÜHJAHRSSEND MÜNSTER
Michael Petersen
02.03.-10.03.
2013
Photo:
Norman Vogt
Due to Easter being early this year, the first of three Send
events will begin as early as 2 nd March. This year’s Spring Send
event will yet again be of one week duration, up until 10 th
March.
After the successful extension of the Spring Send event and at the
request of the Showman Association, the Münster city authorities
agreed to also extend the autumn event for the next two years. After
this double-event test phase there will be a final decision. Despite
the extension of the Autumn Send event, the traditional 5-day
summer event will be held in June. As a result, the former 15 opening
days spread over three events have now already increased to
23, but a city as lively as Münster can certainly cope with 23 fair
days a year. This year, no première or novelty attractions will be
presented at the Spring Send. Given the considerable number of
novelties currently on tour, this is quite surprising. However, at the
two following events there will be a number of examples for Münster,
that can already be revealed at this point in time. Nonetheless,
even without any novelties Send visitors can look forward to an attractive
large fair event offering something for everybody and all
age groups. Visitors will experience a family-friendly fair focusing
on round rides. The Schäfer family will appear with the "Shake”
and once again with the "Voodoo Jumper”, which celebrated its
première in Münster last year. Regular participants are the "Breakdance”
(Bonner), the "Disco Jet” (Heitmann), and the Wave-
Swinger from Barth/Eberhard. Presented once again will be the
"Circus Circus” (Bruch-Gründler), and after a break of several
years, the "Black Hole” coaster (Schierenbeck) will return to Münster.
Moreover, with Markmann’s "Nessy” and the "XXL” swing from
Hoefnagels-Denies there will be two swings, each quite different
from the other. In addition, Schütze’s "Schloss Dracula” Ghost Ride
is to provide visitors with a creepy atmosphere and Welte’s "New
World 3000” simulator will offer delusions of the senses. From the
Funhouse and show booth sector, it was possible to contract the
"Amazonas” (Agtsch) and "Psychodelic” (Häsler). Also presented
will be the two dodgem tracks from Heitmann and Schneider, as
well as the "Europa-Rad” from Kipp.Popular crowd pullers will
once again be the morning beer event on the Sunday, the
Stadtwerke Plus Day, and the fireworks display on Friday evening.
The Family Day is on Thursday.
PALMKIRMES RECKLINGHAUSEN
Text: Michael Petersen
The traditional Palmkirmes in Recklinghausen will be held from 15 th
to 24 th March this year. Every year, the Volksfest at the Vestlandhalle
- well-known and highly popular far beyond the borders of the Ruhr
region - lures its visitors with new attractions, familiar and successful
rides, and Funhouse constructions alike.
This year, showmen from several German federal states will come to Recklinghausen
to start off the new season. Therefore it is hard to fathom why
the Circus Roncalli is scheduled to erect its tents in the city centre at the
same time. This scheduling conflict had also occurred some years ago,
and had more than surprised the participants at the Palmkirmes. The apparent
lack of communication between the city authorities and the Public
Order Office is entirely unfathomable.
According to tradition,
the Palmkirmes closes its gates on
Palm Sunday; a fact the city authorities
should actually be aware
of! Seven novelties for Recklinghausen
(including two attractions
celebrating their première) were
contracted. Alwin Zinnecker will
present "The Beast” – the Streetfighter
looping ride from Technical
Park, as a German première, and
having been thoroughly redesigned
and equipped with a
new decoration scheme, the Looping
Coaster "Cobra” from Angelo
Agtsch will now also tour throughout
Germany. For the first time,
Hermann Fellerhoff will present the
"Geisterstadt”. With the "Amazonas”
(Agtsch) and "Freddys Circus”
(Zinnecker) there will be two
further debutantes from the Funhouse
section. The selection of
novelties for Recklinghausen will
end with the "Voodoo Jumper”
(Schäfer) and Glocke’s "Seesturmbahn”.
After something of a stagnation
in Recklinghausen during
the last few years, this year’s
Palmkirmes will surely make a
completely new, welcome and appealing
visual impression. Indispensable
and highly popular regular
participants are the "Wonder
Wheel” Ferris Wheel (Bruch-
Schneider), the "Breakdance” from
Bonner, two dodgem tracks,
Sturm’s "Kristallpalast”, the "Disco
Jet” Musik Express (Heitmann), the
"Wellenflug” from Barth/Eberhard,
and Schäfer’s "Shake”. Also built
up again will be the "Booster
Maxxx” (Hoefnagels/Denise) and
the "Magic” from Kollmann, as a
classic family ride. The highlights
in the supporting programme will
be, among others, the brilliant fireworks
displays to be held on both
Friday evenings. Wednesday will
be the designated Family Day with
considerably reduced prices; traditionally
this is a strong-turnover
day for the participants at the
Palmkirmes. "Best Age Generation”
initiatives are to clearly liven
up Monday; the name "Seniors’
Day” being somewhat outdated. ■
MEETING
ITALY RIDE DISTRICT MEETING
It may have been cold and
snowy in Italy but there was a
warm welcome for the group
of 16 international visitors to
the Italy Ride District Meeting.
Potential ride buyers
came from as far afield as
California, Russia, Mexico
and Argentina to see first
hand how rides are made,
find out about latest products
and of course to be wined
and dined in a bid to convince
them to place orders.
It’s the 4 th time the event has been held with those
invited being amusement park owners, travelling
showmen and those looking to venture into buying
pertise lies in the custom paintwork of rides, also
took part in hosting the international visitors.
Proof of just how crucial the amusement industry is
their first ride. The event sees the coming together
to the region Italy’s Chamber of Commerce, In-
of several companies involved in the production of
dustry, Agriculture and Small Business also had
amusement devices that are all located within the
their hand in organising the event, bringing with
them other key local business such as APE Parente
host companies were ride designers such as Fab-
bri Group, Park Rides, Pama Rides, Technical Park,
The Fabbri Group were the first port of call on the
Soriani, Lambroghini, Losi Francesco Elettronica
trip and the group had the chance to take a look at
and BN Performance Rides. While support com-
the ride. With just enough time to
enjoy a couple of glasses of
champagne, the group was
whisked away by coach to a
nearby industrial estate which is
the location of several of the
companies involved in the sale
and manufacture of rides. The
group were able to take a close
look at the paintwork produced
by db Crazy Painters as they
were putting the finishing touches
to a travelling Pirate Ship and
Christmas theming for a juvenile
ride. Lamborghini proved especially
enticing for the owners of a soft play centre
in England who were interested in purchasing
one of the companies Carousels as their first venture
into ride ownership. A Sponge Bob themed Miami
ride, complete with tipping seats, proved popular
at the Park Rides factory. This particular model
had just been completed and was ready for shipment
to the Spanish showman Mr Davoli. The different
sizes of carousels on show were also gaining
attention, as was the ever flowing champagne.
Romeo Dalla Valle of Pama Rides was tight lipped
about what projects the company had under way,
prepared only to talk about their new pay box design
with hydraulic raising signs. He also promised
to unveil a spectacular new ride at EAS in October.
The giant Michael Jackson statue from the pop legends
world tour standing guard over the factory
proved to be a big talking point
but no one seemed ready to pay
the 250,000Euro asking price to
add it to their park. Also part of
the event was a trip to the Historical
Museum of the Carousel
where the group found out the
origins of many rides including
Giant Wheels and Swing rides.
Who knew the history of such
rides could be traced back to 6 th
century Turkey and being later
developed in Russia, a country
also regarded as the birthplace
of roller coasters. APE Parente
Fireworks took the opportunity to
demonstrate their expertise both in the construction
of fireworks and in putting on displays worldwide.
Working already with some amusement parks they
were looking to provide their services to
Urfahran Markt in Linz
Twice a year (in spring and in
autumn) the Urfahr Market is
held in the city centre of Linz,
Austria, beautifully located
on the banks of the Danube.
To this day, both the Urfahr
Markets, comprising of four
major elements – a trade
show, “Consuma”; the large
commodity market; the gastronomic
section that includes
the beer tents; and an
attractive fairground section
– enjoy unflagging popularity.
Linz (A)
With some 300 participants, the Urfahr Market
is the largest fair event in Austria. The spring
and autumn markets date back to 1817, when Emperor
Franz I approved two markets by decree: "On
20 th March in the year 1817, Franz I, Emperor of
Austria, by the grace of God, grants the most
obedient community of Linz on the river banks the
right to hold fairs for two days, twice a year”. Since
1902 the market has been held in the Urfahr Danube
area; previous venues were the Linz Steinmetzplatzl
as well as today’s Bernaschekplatz. Urfahr
was incorporated into the
city of Linz only in 1919. At that
time, it was touch and go as to
whether or not the market would
be continued. Only after a break
of two years and some protests,
a market research committee
was founded and decided to
reintroduce the market. The city
authorities were even obliged to
commit themselves to "preserving
and supporting the market
for all time.” Today the Urfahr
Markets are each of 9-days duration,
held from the last Saturday
in spring, and in the autumn
from the last Saturday in September.
Presented at the last spring market
(28 th April to 6 th May 2012)
were 125 sales stalls, 108 participants
in the exhibition halls, 4
beer tents, 33 gastronomic operations
and 61 showman operations.
Most of the showmen
have come to Linz for decades.
Among the larger attractions at
the last spring market were,
among others, a chain ride
"Hully Gully” (Gschwandtner),
section being built up as a separate area between
the fair section and the exhibition has proved very
successful. As a result, the kiddie rides do not
need to stay open up until 1 a.m. but only until 10
p.m. at the latest, but at least until 8 p.m.
Placed between the main fairground streets are the
stalls with charcoal grills, most of them also providing
seating possibilities, which are well frequented
at any hour of the day. After all, for most
visitors the consumption of delicious fried
SPECIAL
There were many
possibilities to move
between the different
fairground thoroughfares
and, naturally, cold beer. Inside the "Bierstadl”
beer tent accommodating 1,042 guests at 131 tables,
for example, some 27,000 half litres of beer
were sold and about 11,000 dishes were served –
including 8,000 halved chickens – during the 9-
day event. Some of the sales booths offered a quite
unconventional product choice, such as soft ice
cream and pickled gherkins at the same time.
As is the case at many Volksfest events in Austria,
the "Schaumrolle” cream-filled pastry roll is the ultimate
sales hit in the sweets section. At some operations,
this article is freshly prepared on site, for
example, at the huge Schaumrolle truck from the
six variations, is sold by Father Andreas, who has
many regular customers in Linz. The third 'pillar' of
the Urfahr Market is the commodity market at the
entrance, providing operations as unusual as a
mobile piercing studio. In the rear section of the
fairground visitors encounter the
"Consuma” exhibition, with four
halls and an outdoor area. The
Urfahr Market is organised by
the ARGE Urfahran Markt with
chairwoman, city councillor Susanne
Wegscheider. Fairground
director is Alois Hauzenberger,
for whom last year’s spring event
was the 40 th market he was in
charge of. Together with his colleague
Andrea Mayrhofer, he is
permanently present on the fairground.
On average, every Urfahr
Market registers around
half-a-million visitors; in ideal
weather visitor attendance has
reached even up to 650,000
The Hubert Markmann family presented its new
gastronomic operation “Hüttenzauber”, built by
the Lehmann firm, for the first time at the Bonn
Christmas Market.
The "Hüttenzauber” consists of three containers with
a front length of 16 metres, a depth of 7.5 metres and
a height of 7 metres. While customers are served on
the ground level, the first level and the tower are
merely decoration – all the decoration and roof elements
being collapsible. The seating area and
benches, as well as the tables and wall coverings
are made of solid wood, and curtains, tablecloths
and seat coverings are in matching colours. The floor
plan is just perfect, providing enough space even for
toilet facilities. Originally, the Markmanns purchased
the new gastronomic operation only for the Bonn
Christmas Market. However according to Hubert
Markmann, he has already received inquiries from
other fairground directors who would like to engage
the attraction for other fair events. Moreover, private
companies have also shown interest in renting the
attraction for office parties.
The “Pyramidentreff” from Johnny and Martina
Walker from Oberflörsheim celebrated its successful
première at the Mannheim Christmas Market, where it
was built up at the water tower – Mannheim's noted
landmark.
The some 20-metre high pyramid, consisting of six special
containers that are assembled by crane, was built in
only 11 weeks. The construction has ground measurements
of 10 x 10 metres with a protruding platform and
roofs. In the evenings, the attraction is spectacularly, but
nonetheless discreetly illuminated. While some figures rotate
on the upper level, the lower level of the pyramid accommodates
the beverage, counter and snack section.
Two staircases at the rear side of the construction lead up
to the upper seating area, also including a beverage section
with counter, providing some 50 seats. This entire section
was available for private rental throughout the duration
of the Christmas Market. There are plans to add another
level above the first level; an option already taken
into consideration during the building of the attraction. ■
CHRISTMAS MARKETS
BERLIN
This is the second part and
end of our reports about the
German Christmas Markets
2012. This time, the focus is
on the markets in Berlin and
Rostock.
The large Berlin
Christmas Fair at the Alexa-
Centre
The large number of Christmas Markets 2012
in the German capital once again left nothing
to be desired and presented ample variety. Berlin’s
attractive large Christmas fair, the "Wintertraum”
(organiser: Blume firm) was once again
held at the "Alexa” shopping
centre. With "Black Hole”, "Sky
Dance”, "Freddys Circus”,
"Aqua Labyrinth” and "Booster
Maxxx”, it presented a number
of novelties in addition to popular
attractions, but hardly any
Christmas-themed elements.
While the duo multi-level carousel
(Langenberg) and the
tall Beverage Pyramid (Bergmann)
formed the centre of the
Christmas Market on the
neighbouring Alexanderplatz (organiser: Bergmann
firm) as was the case the previous year,
the gates at the entrances were new. Located
only a couple of minutes walk from there, the
“Weihnachtszeit” (organiser: Laubinger firm)
26

CHRISTMAS MARKETS
“Weihnachtsabenteuer”,
Ferris Wheel, and
“Booster Maxxx” at the Alexa-
Centre. First-time appearance
of Jörg Spangenberger from
the Saarland with his “Genuss
in Nuss” operation
was held in the area in front
of the Rote Rathaus city
hall, presenting a Ferris
Wheel and an ice rink as
successful crowd pullers,
as well as featuring newly
laid out entrance and exit
areas, made necessary by
ongoing construction
work. Even more affected
by the long-term construction
work than during previous
years was the nostalgic
Christmas Market at the
Opernpalais (organiser:
Nieke firm), the appearance of which was characterised
by temporary pedestrian subways,
supply line gantries and excavators. Apparently,
The “Apres-Ski-Party” was presented in
Focus of attention every
year: the Christmas trees on
the Market at Gedächtniskirche
27

CHRISTMAS MARKETS
The nostalgic Christmas
Market at the Opernpalais was
once again considerably affected
by the construction sites
Early starter: The
Winterwelt at Potsdamer Platz
Small Christmas Market –
large ride: the Christmas Market
at Pankow S-Bahn station
many visitors had difficulty in finding the entrance
despite a sufficient number of signposts and
direction signs mounted by the organiser.
As usual, a first-class Christmas Market was held
at the Gendarmenmarkt, and at the "Winterwelt”
on Potsdam Platz visitors were able to enjoy a toboggan,
bratwurst and Glühwein already from
3 rd November. The organisers
of the Christmas Market at the
Gedächtniskirche once again
experienced bad luck with the
Christmas tree. The pit for the
foundation of the Christmas
tree stand turned out to be
completely unsuitable due to
pipes, cables, and ventilation
shafts laid below the hole,
which was apparently overlooked
during planning. As a
result, a Christmas tree had to
be improvised and the event
was extensively focused on by
the Berlin media yet again. The
largest Market is the one held
in Berlin-Spandau and spreading
from the city hall along the
whole pedestrian precinct. This
time, the Ferris Wheel was replaced
by the "Apres-Ski-Party”,
which was presented,
strangely enough, without a
name sign and almost without
any front lighting. Organised at
very short notice by the
Friedrich firm was a Market in the Berlin district
of Pankow – directly adjacent to the railway station.
It enticed the public with a number of
booths, a heated Christmas tent, and several
kiddie rides, as well as the "Breakdance” from
the Friedrich family and the giant "Gladiator”
from Kriek as a special surprise. The Christmas
Market was held on a former railway property,
and according to the organiser, it should be
possible to repeat the event this year. ■
ROSTOCK
Text:
Photos:
Kai Morawetz
Heiko Schimanzik
From 22 nd November to 22 nd December last year, the
Rostock Christmas Market enticed the public with
more than 250 showmen and market merchants
from Germany and abroad.
The more than 3-kilometre long pre-Christmas fair mile
spread from Fischerbastion, via the Kröpelinerstraße
and the Langestraße, Universitätsplatz and Klostergarten
to the Neuer Markt, offering visitors both old established
as well as novelty attractions. On the Neuer
Markt for the first time, the 20-metre tall Christmas
pyramid from Jacob enticed visitors to linger and enjoy.
Erected between the "Wiener Sport Rad” and the
Wave-Swinger (Barth/Eberhard) in front of the city hall,
it characterised the image of the advent event. Also
presented were the "Montgolfiere” (Zarnikau), the
"Christmas Wheel” (Gormanns), a couple of kiddie
rides, snack, beverage and sweets stalls. Further
along in the direction of the newly designed Kröpelin-
Tor-Vorplatz, visitors were able to enjoy further culinary
delicacies. Built up in front of the illuminated Kröpelin
Tor were the nostalgic Ferris Wheel (Weihs), the "Fantastic
World” Walkthrough construction (Hamberger),
the "Orient Zauber” kiddie track ride and the Fairyland.
Other novelties in this area were the gastronomic operation
"Alte Bretterhütte” (Geisler), the sweets booth
from Schultze, the beverage outlet from Kampinski,
the gastronomy tent from Schmidt, "Zum Jägermeister”
(Günther), and the "Schlemmer Hütte” (Hamberger).
For the first time, Martin Blume presented the
"Bratwurst-Manufaktur” on the Universitätsplatz, serving
not only Original Thüringen Rostbratwurst, but also
organic bratwurst. Thrill seekers got their surge of
adrenaline on the fairground at the Fischerbastion. The
tradition of a winter fair goes back to the mid 1960s,
when the cultural department of the city approved the
joint application from the showmen from the former
GDR northern districts (Rostock, Schwerin and
Neubrandenburg) to operate their rides and booths at
the Rostock Christmas Markets. In the years 1989 and
1990, the newly founded Showman Association applied
to the city state parliament, city administration, and
the Großmarkt Rostock GmbH to be allowed to continue
this tradition. Ever since, it is not possible to imagine
the fairground at the Fischerbastion without the
winter fair. Quite a few visitors – mainly young people
– come to Rostock only because of this winter fair. It
would be too bad if the long planned construction work
was finally carried out on this location, as the Rostock
Christmas Market would lose its characteristic "certain
something”.
By the way, this was also a topic at the DSB national
German Showman Association Glühwein regulars'
table in Rostock on 13 th December. Last year’s top novelty
was "The King” from Zinnecker, while the "Breakdance”
(Fehlauer), the "Speedy” family coaster (M.
Welte), the "Heiße Räder” (L. Welte) and the "Musikladen”
(Hedt) are regular participants. After a break of
many years, Johann Hinzen once again presented his
multi-level Ghost Ride "Haunted Mansion”. The selection
of attractions was rounded off by the "No Limit” Propeller
(van Reeken), as well as games and snack
booths. Continuous rain at the beginning of the Christmas
Market followed by freezing temperatures with ice
and snow resulted in a considerably lower number of
visitors than during the previous year. A couple of days
before the closing of the event, the weather improved
for a short time. However, as it snowed again punctually
for the last opening day, financial results did not
live up to expectations.
CHRISTMAS MARKETS
WINTER WONDERLAND LONDON (GB)
Just six years young, Winter
Wonderland has established
itself as a major part of London’s
Christmas celebrations.
The fact that you’re
more likely to find Bratwurst
or Glühwein than Mary or
Jesus at the Hyde Park event
tells one a lot about Germany’s
skill at ‘exporting’
Christmas, and also the increasingly
secular nature of
British society. Yet organiser
PWR Events has never pretended
this is anything other
than a commercial enterprise,
and for many of the
participating showmen it can
also be quite a prosperous
one. The 2012/13 event
finished its 44-day run on
January 6.
Impressions of Winter
Wonderland in London
Staged in co-operation with The Royal Parks,
it was open daily (except Christmas Day)
from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. What started out in 2007
as a single row of attractions alongside Serpentine
Road, and then grew to two and three rows,
mushroomed again this year to take on a 12-
hectare (30-acre) Kirmes-style layout with
"something around every corner”. Before the first
load had even arrived on site, quagmire-like
conditions were in evidence due to heavy rain
and ground damage sustained during a series
of summer concerts at Hyde Park. This made
something of mockery of the great lengths the
Winter Wonderland organisers go to protect the
grass in this prestigious location, and some visitors
were taken by surprise when they were
splashed by mud and water through the gaps in
the plastic flooring!
The new layout allowed for a central plaza area,
overlooked by one of the biggest travelling roller
coasters ever to appear in Great Britain – Max
Eberhard’s "Wilde Maus XXL"
(new for 2012) – in addition to
tried and tested Winter Wonderland
favourites Schneider’s
"Power Tower 2" and Grier’s
"Bavarian Village" (Oktoberfest
comes to England’), plus an attractive
two-tier Chance
carousel contributed by the local
Manning family. In fact, the
Manning Organisation remains
one of the most active participants
in the proceedings and,
according to Joseph Manning,
provided around 40% of the
equipment at this year’s event
– 100 containers’ worth – including the dedicated
Alpine Adventure and Santa Land areas,
within which were new additions including "Santa's
Toy Factory" (Fun House), "Showtime" (ex-Piontek
Afterburner), a Lamborghini Wave
Swinger and brand new DAL Lunapark (Turkey)
Pirate Ship. Another British showman company,
the Mellors Group, also made a significant contribution,
providing its giant Mondial Observation
Wheel, ex-Vienna Prater "Star Flyer" and "Mountain
Rescue" zip line. Other than the "Bavarian
Village", the focal point of the event remains
PWR’s large ice rink, sponsored this year by Ice
Age 4. Meanwhile characters from the popular
animated films could be also be found in frozen
form inside the new "Magical Ice Kingdom", a -
8° exhibition of ice sculptures. Zippo's Circus
again presented two different performances inside
its heated big top, a family-friendly Christmas
show and the more risqué Cirque Berserk –
together bringing in the highest revenue of any
30

single attraction. At an average of £10 (EUR 12)
for a 50-minute show, however, it was also one
of the best value-for-money offerings at the
event. Making a return after its world premiere
last Christmas in London was Saskia & René
Rasch’s "Alpen Hotel". The owners of the spectacular
Dietz Fun House expressed their satisfaction
at being awarded a position this year
close to the Observation Wheel and one of the
main entrances after being somewhat hidden
amongst the trees in 2011. An attractive cluster
of attractions was contributed by Dutch showman
Reinard van der Veen, returning with his
"Snow Jet 2" (Matterhorn), but also this time the
"North Pole" Fun House and other snow-themed
features (see box story). Other major rides and
attractions included Rasch's "Irrgarten" (Mirror
Maze/Fun House); Buwalda's suspended
Christmas Coaster, Alpine Coaster and "Santa's
Flying Sleigh" (Wacky Worm); Irvin's Gallopers
(Carousel) and "Helter Skelter" (Slide); "Gess"
Ghost Train; Schneider’s "Pirate's Adventure";
Danter's "Air" (Star Shape); Ohlrogge's "Winter
Wonderland" (Action/Musik Express); Lemmerman's
"Thriller" (Ghost Train); Antibes Land's
(France) 5D Cinema; Wallis's "Barrel of Fun" (Rotor);
plus various attractions presented by the
Manning Organisation including "Santa's Ferris
Wheel", "Little Ben" (SBF Drop Tower),
"Avalanche" (Waltzer), "Deep Impact" (Miami),
"Blizzard" (Fabbri Booster), "Penguin
Party" (Autoskooter) and "Spinning
Baubles" (Tornado). Almost every attraction
was themed to some extent,
and some were even built from
scratch especially for the event.
There were also more food and drink
outlets than ever before, elevating
this above most regular funfairs and
significantly increasing the length of
stay and spend per head. It was observed
by some participants that the
number of international tourists may
have been down, as many had
CHRISTMAS MARKETS
Impressions of Winter
Wonderland in London
come to London during the summer instead for
the Olympics. Nevertheless attendance remained
strong, with up to 100,000 visitors each
weekend. As in 2011, 'staged entry' was enforced
at certain periods to ease congestion.
Furthermore peak pricing was implemented on
the Observation Wheel, Magical Ice Kingdom,
Ice Rink and Circus. By pre-booking such attractions,
the organisers ensured a certain level
of support even when the weather was bad. Digital
on-site signage was used, together with Twitter,
to advise visitors of crowd control measures
and 'tube' station closures etc. The social media
site also provided a powerful promotional tool for
32

the organisers, who re-tweeted a steady stream
of celebrity endorsements. Yet despite Hyde
Park's 'royal' status, Wills & Kate were conspicuous
by their absence!
Ewald Schneider / Power Tower
"When we first came to Winter Wonderland with
the House of St Nicholas [gastronomy operation]
in 2008 I thought, 'This will be not be right for the
Tower',” recalls Ewald Schneider. "However, as
the weeks went on, more and more people started
arriving.” A year later, Schneider took the
plunge and brought "Power Tower 2" to London
for the first time, having opened the ride a few
winters previously at Funderland in Dublin. It's
been a Winter Wonderland favourite ever since.
"I do not think we could make it work if it was just
for two or three-weeks, but our only real alternatives
back home would be Rostock or Berlin and
there simply aren't any Christmas fairs in Germany
that last seven weeks like this.” Schneider
added that the cost of accommodation for him
and his staff plus local traffic regulations are
among his biggest burdens when coming to
Great Britain. Even though he chose the shortest
possible sea crossing, from Calais to Dover,
he was still saddled with high freight charges.
Yet, like his showman colleague René Rasch,
with whom he shared the same hotel, the Power
Tower proprietor is full of praise for the "very professional”
service provided by PWR Events director
Geoff Popper. Clearly he is keen to return!
Reinard van der Veen has been travelling his
"Snow Jet" Matterhorn in the Netherlands and
beyond for 16 years, and just a few years ago
bought and extensively refurbished a second
SDC ride, now called "Snow Jet 2". The attraction
has been part of the line-up at Winter Wonderland
for the last three years. For 2012, however,
Reinard really went to town, bringing to
London a Snowball games trailer, food stall and
4-tier Fun House named "North Pole". The latter,
an Italian construction
originally built for a
Dutch showman and
purchased by van der
Veen from the Curry
family in Ireland, was
previously known as
"Hollywood". "When I
bought the Fun House,
it was obvious to me
that it was also going
to get a winter theme,
so I booked my painter
and got to work,” he
told. Van der Veen
says he may have got
"a bit carried away” by
also building a themed
scene for Winter Wonderland
called "Polar
Bear Island". Unlike
the Snow Jet rides and
North Pole Fun House, it will not travel in 2013,
although it will make a one-off appearance this
summer at Park Hilaria in Eindhoven. ■
CHRISTMAS MARKETS
WINTER OPENING AT WIENER PRATER
Winter market and
particial winter opening at
Vienna Prater
Text: Wolfgang Payer
When the entrance area at the Ferris Wheel site
at the Vienna Prater was entirely rebuilt in 2008,
it provided new possibilities for events. One of
these new events, which has been held by the
Prater Service GmbH every year, is the "Wintermarkt
am Riesenradplatz”, or Winter Market on
the Ferris Wheel Site.
As a result, the Prater and a number of the ride attractions
can now also be opened in winter. The
winter market was opened from 17 th November
2012 up until 6 th January 2013 from 12 midday to
10 p.m. daily. The entire Ferris Wheel site was decorated
with festive lighting equipment, and in the
middle of the site there was a tall Christmas tree
around which different culinary and handicraft
booths were built up in a circle, playing Christmas
carols and serving punch and mulled wine, providing
a cosy atmosphere . Every Thursday to Saturday
from 7 p.m. live music, ranging from gospel and
pop to soul, was presented on a stage. Visitors who
wanted to warm themselves up on the Ferris Wheel
site during the concerts could visit one of the
restaurants, take a ride on the festively illuminated
Ferris Wheel, or pay a visit to Madame Tussauds.
Those not satisfied with these attractions were able
to take a ride on a heated train through the Prater.
The train took its passengers along the Straße des
Ersten Mai to the rear section of the Prater. Along
this route, visitors encountered open ride attractions,
such as a Ghost Ride, Wild Mouse, Funhouses,
various kiddie attractions and – as a highlight
– the Prater Tower, along with a new go-kart
track and an autodrome. Moreover, a special adventure
tour, including the kiddie-indoor-coaster, a
pony ride, and a "grotto-track”, could be booked for
children. The highlights at the winter market were a
"Perchtenlauf” - a procession of demons with the
spooky masks of the Ybbstal "Devil of the Gorge” -
the visit of the Coca Cola Christmas truck, and a big
party including a fireworks display accompanied
by music on New Year's Eve.
The 120,000-resident city
of Metz (Lorraine) offered a
surprisingly ample choice
of pre-Christmas entertainment
for a city of this
size.
Traditional Christmas Markets
were held on Place
Saint-Louis, and Place Saint-
Jaques in the city centre,
and there was also a market
with stalls and kiddie rides
built up inside and in front of
a large shopping centre in
the city. Moreover, with the
"Expo Star” Ferris Wheel
from Bruch, visitors were
able to enjoy one of the
largest transportable Ferris
Wheels in Europe on Place
de la République, which was
joined by a colourful stallcity,
an ice rink, and an impressive
Water & Light Show
held several times daily. ■
SAINT-QUENTIN (F)
From early October
Saint Denis in St. Quentin
When the year is heading towards its end, the
“Foire de la Saint-Denis” takes place in the
French city of Saint-Quentin. The event's location
is the Place du Champ de Foire, which
is located not far from the railway station.
This year the festival began on the 6 th
October and ran until the 4 th November.
The new swing "Air One Maxxx" was a highlight
this year and further major rides present were the
propeller "Vertical Limit". Visitors were able to enjoy
a wonderful view from the Ferris Wheel that
was located at the back end of the festival
grounds.
Further rides present were the Breakdance "Extreme"
and "Maxi Jumping" (a Smashing Jump),
which as a special feature had irregular flames
coming out of the front of the ride, which in the
cool weather also provided warmth for the viewers.
The nostalgic Caterpillar Ride "Royal
Goal wall shooting
and the “La Pieuvre” ride
actors provided shock effects and caused
goose bumps for passing guests when they
stood behind them silently. Additionally there
were also the two storey labyrinth "Le Sphinx",
and as another novelty, the "Cinema 6D", ready
and waiting for their visitors. A number of kiddie
rides, a Walkthrough for children, and many gastronomy
and games operations rounded off the
supply of attractions.
was taken over by the Walkthrough "Horror
different horror scenes along the course. Live
MODEL CONSTRUCTION
INTERNATIONAL “TOY FAIR“ IN NÜRNBERG
At the Nürnberg “Toy Fair” visitors
could also have a look at the
first model novelties from large
series manufacturers from the
fairground and circus sectors.
Small series manufacturers
however were poorly represented
at the Toy Fair, even though
some of them offer surprisingly
high-quality fairground models.
Faller premium set:
the “Wanderzirkus Raimondi”
This Faller set was
available at the discount retailer
Aldi shortly before Christmas
Faller:
Shortly before Christmas, Faller delivered a set consisting
of several parts, called "Dorfkirmes” (village
fair), to the discount retailers Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd.
As many as six known fairground models, differing
from the standard model series in colours and decoration,
were available for _29.95. The set included the
"Bratwurst” snack booth, a bouncer, a toilet wagon,
the "Schützenhaus” shooting
gallery and the sweets stall
"Süsse Träume”. The set was
rounded off by a kiddie ride
and various decoration elements,
such as sun shades
and bar tables. The "Fun-
Schiff”, announced for last
October, will now be delivered
to the shops. The construction
set will be available
from the end of February.
The planned delivery was
delayed by extensive tests of
the drive system and the resultant
ride sequence. After the ride novelty of 2012,
it was clear that there would be no new large ride this
year. As a result, Faller packs "old acquaintances”,
some of them in a new design, into a "fairground set
with Polyp”. The latter comes from the very beginning
of the fairground series and is now offered in a newly
decorated form. The set is completed by the "Mais-
Man” and the "Zylinder-Werfen” and rounded off by a
toilet wagon and fairground fences – notably with new
motifs. This set will be available from April (Art-No.
140341, 49.99 Euro). Also available from April will be
Novelty from Faller: “Fair set with Polyp”
a 1:160-scale model set for model builders. It will include
a small horse carousel with motor as well as the
"Schützenhaus” and the Süsse Träume” booths
known from the H0-scale Dorfkirmes set. The shooting
gallery "Saloon” comes also from the H0-scale
programme (Art-No. 242301, 49.99 Euro). Moreover,
new special effects allow for an even more effective
illumination of the fairground models. From May, a
disco light with a rapid-rhythm change of light (Art-
No. 180710, 12.99 Euro) and a stroboscope with
short, bright light flashes (Art-No. 180711, 12.99
Euro) will be delivered to the shops. A circus flair and
feeling will be provided by this year’s limited edition
of the premium model "Wanderzirkus Raimondi”. Faller
has now also added a circus model to its programme,
thus filling another gap in its ample model
offering. A small travelling circus was the perfect
choice, as many model fairground and railway
builders have only little space within their models,
and the travelling circus nonetheless offers true circus
flair. The varied set will be available from June
and consists of the following models: Large circus
tent (155/135/80 mm), small tent (80/70/70 mm), two
38

animal tents in different sizes, a paybox, a toilet wagon,
a fortune teller tent, two caravans, 600 mm of
fencing, circus director, clown, elephant and decorative
material (Art-No. 130990, 79.99 Euro).
Town Model
The Hamburg manufacturer will offer the classic
"DOM” entrance from April. The photo shows a prototype;
the model will eventually be more fine-tuned.
The entrance will be made of laser-cut cardboard and
acrylic. The entrance gate will be offered as H0 and
N-scale models for a price of 9.95 Euro each. There
will probably also be a neutral version with a "Kirmes”
(fairground) name sign. For more information:
BUB Premium Classixxs
The successful 1:87 and
1:43-scale Roncalli models
will also be continued this
year. While a BMW Isetta
Standard with a "Roncalli”
name sign on the roof, and a
VW T1 "Roncalli” with an advertising
board on the loading
platform will be launched as
H0-scale models, another
variation of the Opel Blitz will
be available as a 1:43-scale
model.
Herpa
The manufacturer announced its novelties, including
beautiful models for model fairgrounds and model
circuses alike, for the first half of 2013. A Scania
Hauber flat-bed traction unit and a "Circus Krone”
trailer (Art-No. 301657, 24.50 Euro), as well as a Mercedes
Benz Actros L low loader articulated lorry with
ascent sections – the second model from the new
Barth series – (301787, 26.50 Euro) are said to be already
available. In May, a MAN TGA XLX flat-bed
traction unit will be launched, a new Roncalli tractor
with authentic markings (Art-No. 302203, 14.50
Euro).
Busch
Among the novelties there are a special fairground
model and many circus models. A small Smart Fortwo
"Funfair” is located on a printed panel, and is covered
with motifs of rides, coasters and Ferris Wheels
from the Bruch firm. Further novelties will be a Smart
Fortwo "Merz & Pelini”, a beautifully printed model of
the "Mit-Mach-Zirkus”, as well as a Robur LO 2002 A
as transport vehicle from Zirkus Busch with intricate
superstructure.
Busch – ESPEWE-Models
The "Zirkus Probst” edition consists of five vehicles.
The models marketed by Busch are manufactured in
the factory at Schönheide. These true-to-original
models from the circus founded by Rudolf Probst in
1945 will be launched in cooperation with the owner
of the ESPEWE Company. There will be four different
lorries of the W 50 L type, as well as a chaff box trailer
from type HW 80. These models will be delivered
between March and July.
European Showmen’s Union
Europäische Schausteller-Union
Union Foraine Européenne
International non-government organisation (NGO) • Established in 1954
President Albert Ritter
European Showman Solidarity in Osnabrück
With the frames of the 64th Delegation
Day of the German Showman
Association, representatives
of the European Showman Union
met up on the 25th of January
2013 for an exchange of information.
The centre point of the event
were the current themes such as
the implementation of the Europe
norm 13814 for ride constructions,
the report about the papal
visit at the beginning of December
2012 in Rome, and the results
of the annual congress of the British
showman association, the
Showmen's Guild of Great Britain.
The presidium affirmed the support
of the ESU for Portuguese
showman colleagues in the fight
against the tax measures undertaken
by the government (see report).
Following the end of the "ESU
Breakfast", the representatives of the European
Showman Associations took part in the rally
of the German Showman Association, and
emphasised European showman solidarity
impressively with their traditional flags.
As was the case in the past years, the ESU representatives
used the Delegation Day of the

Europe's showmen at the mass rally of the German Showman Association 2013 in Osnabrück.
Photo: ESU
DSB for constructive discussions with their
German colleagues. Albert Ritter, President of
the National German Association and the European
Showman Union, considered the continuous
exchange between the national associations
as an important basis for safeguarding
the future of the showman industry and
the Volksfests of Europe.
Demonstration for the Preservation of Volksfests in Portugal
ESU Supports Portuguese Showman Colleagues
EU President Martin Schulz (left) speaking with
the President of the Portuguese Showman Association,
Luís Paulo Fernandes.
Europe has a long Volksfest tradition.
However if the future of this tradition is in
danger, then it means putting up a good
fight – such as at the beginning of the year
in Portugal, when showmen protested and
demonstrated in countless parades
against the increase of value added tax
from 6 to 23 percent.
For the showmen the new tax law means not
only heavy turnover losses but also puts their
jobs in danger, explained the Portuguese
Showman Association Associação Portuguesa
de Empresas de Diversão (APED), and requested
the month of January for protests in
the capital of Lisbon. The response was unique.
The showmen were everywhere with
their protest placards showing their discontent
about the financial politics of the Portuguese
government – be it in front of the Ministry
of Finance, the Ministry of Economics, the
parliament, or even the Regulating Authority
for Energy, they demanded the retraction of
tax law loudly.
The European Showman Union confirmed its
support for its Portuguese colleagues. The
presidium will champion the Portuguese
showmen committees, declared ESU-President
Albert Ritter. The increase of the value
added tax is a danger not only to Portugal –
but the future of the showman industry. "We
will fight this political arbitrariness together in
the whole of Europe, according to our motto

European Showmen’s Union • Europäische Schausteller-Union • Union Foraine Européenne
'unity gives strength!" said Ritter.
The first success could already be seen: the
President of the European Parliament, Martin
Schulz, appeared for discussions with government
representatives in Lisbon on the 11 th

Demonstration of showmen in Lisbon.
January 2013. He spontaneously put the
showmen's questions to parliament, and
promised his support.
WATERPARK
The 515 metre long
course of the coaster winds
over and under water slides
and rock formations
Whilst the Saudi Arabian megaproject
à la Dubailand in the
desert sands has sunk, the
second tourist draw card already
went into operation within two
years in the neighbouring Emirate
Abu Dhabi: a gigantic water
park on Yas Island in the Persian
Gulf, located approximately 20
minutes by car from the same
name capital city of Abu Dhabi.
Yas Waterworld, Vekoma
Each seat is equipped
with a laser pistol
And it's not a coincidence that Yas Waterworld
is in the immediate vicinity to Ferrari World,
the largest indoor theme park in the world. Both
local investor Aldar Properties PJSC, as well as
operator Farah Leisure Parks Management LLC
(a local subsidiary of the American ProFun
Management Group), have promised themselves
a "second gate" and also an enlivenment of Ferrari
World, which opened its gates in November
2010. On the 19 th , January Sheik bin Tahnoon Al
Nahyan, his
large family, as
well as invited
guests were able to enjoy the 900 million Dirham
(180 million Euro) park for the first time privately,
before the official opening took place a day later.
And the results of the five year planning and building
time are impressive: on an area of 11 hectares
(plus 2.5 for future extensions), the park designer
of the British offices of Atkins in cooperation
with WTI have brought into being 43 attractions,
among them 14 water slides (12 from WhitewaterWest
and two from ProSlide), and a coaster.
44

The 515 metre long suspended coaster "Bandit
Bomber" from Vekoma is without a doubt one of
the most unusual highlights of the park.
During the 105 second ride (including two lifts),
the four ride guests per car can trigger various
effects such as geysers and water fountains with
the aid of laser pistols. Additionally each
passenger receives a 10 litre water bomb, which
can be thrown at park guests standing underneath,
whilst bathing guests on the ground can in
turn operate well placed water guns. With this
abundance of interactive elements never in use
before, the "Bandit Bomber" promises a very
refreshing experience – for both passengers and
viewers.
The largest and simultaneously probably the most
spectacular slide is the "Dawwama" from Pro-
Slide. It is the world's first with a combined hydro
magnetic-uphill-element and a "Tornado" funnel
element. Following a 238 metre long coaster type
track sequence, the 6-seat tubes land in the final
18 metre sized funnel. The guests climb so high
up the walls that apparently airtime occurs a number
of times.
The catch-all motto of Yas Waterworld is the pearl
diving motive, an important part of the history of
the Emirates. All elements of the park, from the
water slides right up to the three restaurants refer
to the fairytales of the "The Legend of the Lost
Pearl".
“Bandit Bomber” from
Vekoma runs through almost
the complete water park area
A huge amount of fun is the
possible interaction between
different sexes, especially for the
local visitors
45

The Lazy River underpasses
some of the fun slides
Yas Waterworld was designed for a daily capacity
of up to 7,000 visitors; in the first year of operation
the hope is for 700,000 at the very least. A
day ticket costs 225 DH (approx. 46 Euro, children
38 Euro). A combo-ticket for both Waterworld
and Ferrari World is available for 325 DH (67 Euro;
children 55 Euro).
We spoke with an expert on the worldwide theme
park scene about the new water park of the superlative:
Stefan Zwanzger. He is "The Theme
Park Guy", lives in Abu Dhabi, and followed the
construction of Yas Waterworld intensively. Shortly
after the opening, he visited the park on our behalf.
What is your overall impression of the
park?
It is great! And the queues for the annual pass
upgrades are long. As of today, it’s in the middle
of nowhere, but I think it will be a success.
Stefan, you know a lot of water parks
worldwide. Is it the best water park in the
world?
I would say it shares this title with a couple of
other water parks. Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon,
Atlantis Bahamas and Valley of Waves feel more
immersive since you don’t see the outside world.
This has not been achieved in Yas Waterworld.
When you head up the slide towers you are
exposed to anything but the park’s Middle
Eastern atmosphere – the red Ferrari World roof,
a Formula 1 track, a couple of hotels, a shopping
mall under construction. This takes a bit away
from the magic. But there’s no water park in the
world that has such a huge selection of slides and
rides paired with such immaculate, beautiful
theming.
46

What’s the quality of the theming?
A very high quality, apart from maybe the
wave pool area. Lots of love and attention to detail
went into the park!
Would you say the designers have been inspired
by other waterparks for example by
Disney’s parks?
If I think very hard and long about it, maybe
there is a little bit of Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard
Beach in it, but only very little. Yas Waterworld is
really unique and an act of genuine creativity. The
designers have done an awesome job.
More than two years ago, Ice Land WOW
RAK opened in Ras Al Khaimah, one hour
north of Dubai, which certainly is something
special due to its extraordinary theming a la
47

The multi-lane slide is called
the “Slither’s Slides” here
Disney’s Blizzard Beach. Does it have enough
visitors and tourists?
celebrating a car brand do in the middle of the
desert?
The park entrance and the
station building of the coaster
mirror the earlier historic building
style of Abu Dhabi, which
unfortunately no longer exists
I don't have the numbers, but from what I have
seen it's spookily empty on working days. Yas
Waterworld plays in a very different league
though!
Has Yas Waterworld been conceptualized
for international tourists only? Or does it draw
interest from the locals, as well?
It’ll absolutely work for both. Abu Dhabi has
no more old charming souks, it’s all skyscrapers
and highways these days. Yas Waterworld is
basically a Middle East fantasy village, and it has
a little souk, too. I saw a lot of locals in the park
during the week. For tourists it very much works,
too! People fly to the UAE to have a Middle
Eastern desert holiday, and this park delivers. In
contrast, what does a giant indoor theme park
The operators now have two parks next to
each other. Will Ferrari World profit from it?
I believe so. They also sell combo-tickets for
a steep discount. But first and foremost the hotels
on Yas Island will profit. With only Ferrari World
and a golf course open until recently, there was
little reason to stay. Now Yas Island has turned into
an overnight destination.
And what's the best slide in the park?
I wouldn't have expected it, but my favourite
is a classic two-person tube slide in WhiteWater
West's snake themed slide tower. The second one
from the right. A tunnel slide that looks like all the
others, but turns out to be surprisingly wild and
merciless. It’s great to be surprised.
48

What about the slide “Rattler”? It's a
world's first!
one in Saudi Arabia that’s open or about to open
now.
The Rattler didn't impress me much. In fact,
if I was forced to slide this slide continuously for
30 minutes, I would probably throw up. There are
always new shapes hitting the water slide market,
but this one, for me, it just doesn't work.
How about the announced projections inside
the slides?
They aren’t in place yet. I was told they will
come later. We will see.
And the “Hydro Magnetic-Tornado”?
Tornados are always great, and it’s fun with
the music and the six person raft, but "Dawwama”
is not an innovation. It’s a combination of two
existing experiences. Maybe the funnel is bigger
than all the others, but I didn’t feel much of it. For
everyone living in the Middle East, though, it’s a
real thrill: they’ve got no Tornados here, apart from
What do you think about Vekoma’s
“Splash Party” roller coaster?
The pearl diving show is
the central element of the water
park
49

WATERPARK
In the background is
the world’s largest indoor
park, Ferrari World
An aerial image of the new
Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi
Our dialogue partner was
Stefan Zwanzger
It’s a solid quality. For me it wasn’t very
thrilling, but the locals scream from the bottom of
their heart. So it’s a hit. It’s also a way for guys to
splash girls and vice versa. Given that they
normally don’t talk to each other in public in this
region, this is a great – if somewhat kinky – way
to connect.
Abu Dhabi is a strict Muslim state. Is there
a chance that gender segregated days will
be introduced?
Wild Wadi has or used to have ladies only
nights every Thursday. I can imagine that Yas
Waterworld introducing something similar. There
is no separation of women and men in UAE water
parks during normal operation days, and I trust it
will stay like this. If it was to be introduced or
enforced by law, I don’t think the parks would
survive.
Have you seen the expansion plans?
No. But whenever staff of the park tell me
about it, they get these dazed, excited eyes. It
must be good, what’s on the blueprints.
Will the park be a success?
Judging from the evening queues in front of
the annual pass upgrade ticket booth, yes! The
water park is addictive and the attractions too
manifold to get bored in one day. And I doubt
anyone finds time, for example, to focus on the
RFID-powered treasure hunt throughout the park
on the first visit. You would want to come back.
And now think about the expansions in the pipeline!
The park was much cheaper to build than
Ferrari World, and it’s way better, too. I hope this
was just the beginning and we’ll see plenty new
themed water parks popping up around the
world.
Stefan, thank you very much for the
interview.
SPECIAL
One of this year’s
highlights in the coaster
segment will undoubtedly
be found at the Danish
Djurs Sommerland Park
It's not without pride that we are
presenting the most extensive
new attraction list worldwide for
the theme park season once
again this year! However should
an attraction have been overlooked,
or erected in the last
minute, we would appreciate a
short message, so that we can
present an addendum in the next
edition. We wish all operators a
successful 2013 season, and all
visitors a theme park season
rich in experience.
TOP ACT
The “Kumba-Twister”
has been erected on the
edge of the park area
The Serengeti-Park Hodenhagen
in Northern Germany has been
enriched by a lovely attraction
since already last season: the
unusually well themed swing
"Kumba-Twister" from manufacturer
Technical Park.
Text & Fotos: Frank Lanfer
Veronica Trussardi Sepe
and Giovanni Sepe
Kumba-Twister
largest safari park in Europe
on 200 hectares, since its
opening in 1974.
For this reason, in cooperation
with the manufacturer,
Right from the beginning it was very clear that the world's first swing ride came into being with a
the major ride in "Frisbee"-style would be without
any upside down elements. For this reason passengers from the often cold, wet, and foul
straw roof! Whether or not it's enough to protect
Huss Rides was naturally also under consideration,
especially as quite a number of ride conable,
as the speed that the 24-seat gondolas
weather in North Germany is more than questionstructions
from this manufacturer had operated at reach is considerable. The outward swing is 120°
Serengeti-Park for many years. However, in November
2011 the decision was made for a product 14 metre height. With a viewing direction toward
on each side, and the rotation axis is located at a
from the Italian firm Technical Park.
the outside, ride guests reach a height of up to 23
For both Managers – Giovanni Sepe and his metres.
cousin Veronica Trussardi Sepe, it was particularly
important that the new attraction would also fit area called "Kinderparadies" – at first glance
"Kumba-Twister" has been settled in the kiddie
to the park in design. The Italian family stems from perhaps not quite so fitting a location, however
Naples and Bergamo, and has operated the parents can – if they are brave enough – also ex-
72

perience adequate ride fun there as well. Additionally,
the new attraction also entices all the thrill
addicted teenagers to an area which is remotely
located at the back end of the park.
The "Aqua-Safari" that opened in 2010, in which
park guests speed through the canals in airboats
meeting up with amongst others a huge great ape
("King Kong" from Huss/Heimo), will also be
generously extended. A small disadvantage however:
the two Huss ride constructions "Rainbow"
and "Enterprise" have unfortunately been dismantled
and sold.
Serengeti-Park Hodenhagen is located in the city
triangle of Hamburg-Bremen-Hannover, and
simultaneously is right in the middle of the experience
region of Germany: the Heide-Park Soltau,
the Magic Park Verden, the Vogelpark Walsrode,
the Snow Dome Bispingen, and the Erse Park
Uetze are all in the immediate vicinity. Therefore
it's not uninteresting that
since 2007 visitors have
been able to stay overnight
in safari-lodges in
the centre of the park –-
lions' roaring in the
middle of the night inclusive!
80 log cabins
are available. ■
KRAKE LEBT!
The name of the attraction alone
would be enough to cause
grown sailors to develop a knot
in the stomach. But this attraction
also spreads fear and dread
to landsmen as well.
The "Krake lebt!" (engl. “Kraken lives!”) opened
at Heide-Park in the spring of 2012 under the
station of the coaster "Krake" that had gone into
operation the year before (a Dive Coaster from
Bolliger & Mabillard), and is a fittingly themed spooky-Walkthrough
with live actors.
Twelve visitors are tested for their deep sea aptitude
initially at a 72 second pace, before going into
the depths in a submarine. Naturally all sorts of
things go wrong: the guests have to free themselves
out of the submarine after a forced stop and
escape though an old shipwreck, during which time
they meet up with some strange forms.
The rooms and scenery have been elaborately designed
by TAA Industries. According to information
from the manufacturer, all wooden planking and replicas
such as typical buccaneer weapons were
hand made in order to achieve the most true to detail
and authentic wealth of detail. Visitors perceive
these unconsciously, although the makers of the
many creepy attractions are of the opinion that the
details wouldn't be noticed in the dark by the guest.
The theming is also supplemented with cleverly
placed video effects, one for example being here
without a doubt the 3D-effects in the submarine,
and the suddenly appearing octopi mouths in the
labyrinth section. The visitors are also intimately involved
with the experience acoustically, with the
coaster “Krake” and the horror
cabinet “Krake lebt!” are located
park composed soundtrack
(IMAscore).
"Krake lebt!" would be a really
successful and atmospheric
experience with pleasant
and a non too heavy creepy
factor, if it wasn't for two
things: despite the park's announced
pass-through time
of seven minutes, the complete
attraction appears to
be a lot shorter during personal
experience. And also
the unfortunately strongly reduced
arc of suspense at the end plays a part in
this sense, as it takes part completely in the dark,
with most visitors absolving the passageways very
quickly, which lead directly and without finale into
the merchandising shop of the "Krake" coaster. The
design decision that might well provide the announced
capacity, and therefore there is rare congestion,
but the visitor due to the shortness of the
attraction, acknowledges it all with a frown that is
not all that rarely seen. ■
INTERVIEW WITH INGO REICHENSTEIN
The cinema heroes go from one
adventure to the other, and are
always escaping from Captaine Du-
Since 2003, 43 year old Ingo Reichstein has bois – the mean female animal controlling authority.
been Entertainment-Manager at the Heide-Park In the show we show how the animals find shelter
Resort and creates new shows and attractions in a wander circus, and how they bring new momentum
to the show. Wait and see and be
every year. For example the Walkthrough horror
experience "Krake lebt!” His current project for surprised!
2013 is called "Madagascar LIVE!"
Will there be similar shows at other Merlin-
Mr Reichstein, will Heide-Park now become Parks?
a film park?
Another show with the stars from the film series
The Heide-Park Resort remains Northern Germany's
largest family and theme park, combined fully since 2012 for our colleagues at Chessington's
"Madagascar" has already been running success-
with large attractions, various entertainments, and World Adventures Resort in the UK. Gardaland Resort
in Italy will also start a "Madagascar LIVE!"-
a hotel offer. Our new show "Madagascar LIVE!" is
in my opinion is a great extension to our shows on Show in 2013.
offers, and is based on the cinema hit "Madagascar
3 - Flucht durch Europa". In a word: we are The new show will apparently be harboured
happy about the new show, but we will definitely not in a new round tend. Is this to be a temporary attraction
for one become a film park.
season?
Ingo Reichenstein is Heide-
Park’s Entertainment-Manager
Will the well known computer animated
cartoon now become a show to take hold of, or
how should we see it?
Correct. From the 23rd March 2013 it means
here "arena open" for the lion Alex, the hippo lady
Gloria, and the lemur king Julien! We are presenting
the characters from the film in a live show for
the whole family – in a circus tent in the middle of
the Heide-Park Resort.
In the 3 rd part of the movie,
lion Alex and his friends join a
wander circus. The fact that the
show takes place in a circus tent
is the logical consequence, and
belongs to the build up and contents
of the show. Illusions and
acrobatics are an important component.
The show has been planned
as a several year experience.
Which sequences from the film will be
theatrically implemented?
Thank you very much for
the interview.
PROJECT: WITCH WORLD
The Netherlands appears to be
very active as far as park
projects in Europe are concerned.
Following the plans of a completele
Dutch consortium to erect
the Adventure World Warsaw
in Poland, another Dutch fraction
has found its way together,
and wishes to establish a modern
fairytale forest in Sweden.
Text:
Frank Lanfer
But the two groups have nothing in common, as
explained by initiator Ton Theunis: "We have
been warned in recent weeks by what happened
with the Warsaw project in Poland, how a project
can grow out of hand, how money can 'vaporise' if
you’re not careful. We’re not in a hurry to catch a
train. WitchWorld is slowly moving forward.” Ton
Theunis is a Dutch crime novel author and has a holiday
home in the Swedish city of Mönsteras, the location
where the new tourist attraction will come into
being, with the approval of the local government.
The idea has been tossed around since 2009, and
in the team are Johan Desseyn as Park Designer,
and Francis Stokkel as Project Manager. A 190 hectare
sized forest ground is available directly on the
Baltic Sea, on which a 200-bed hotel, a bungalow
village and a modern fairytale forest
are planned to be erected. Although
the park will not contain large
ride attractions, it will have Darkrides,
high-tech animatronics and
special effects. The first building
phase is planned to be completed
by 2015. Almost 200,000 visitors
are expected in the first year. ■
COMMENTARY: BLACKSTONE
Text:
Frank Lanfer
Three owner changes in only four and a half
years – in the face of all hope: Blackstone has
also proved to be a locust and continues to
move on.
Actually one had more trust in Steve Schwarzmann,
after all he is or rather was also involved in Universal
Studios, Legoland Florida, and Merlin Entertainments.
However, the interest of his privateequity-firm
was not the park branch as was generally
supposed. The theme park industry had just
recovered to the greatest possible extent, and
already the group SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment
is up for sale – naturally at a profit, and not without
a hefty bonus first. The talk is of 500 million $, an
amount that is approximately one sixth of the total
value, and has to be booked as a liability initially in
the park group’s balance. However conservation
existence, sustainability, as well as commercial
social responsibility don’t play a great role in hedge
funds - only own maximum profit at
a minimum running time counts.
Nevertheless, the group of 11 parks
is not to be sold to the next private
fund, but over the share market –
but still!
Currently those interested are already
standing in line: Cedar Fair
LP and Six Flags Inc. For both
companies, it would be a highly
interesting deal: they would have to
find access to the lucrative market
in Central Florida initially. ■
