DELIRIUM
FÜCHSCHEN
Text & Photo: Ralf Schmitt
After the voluntary decision
not to participate in
2011, the “Füchschen”
tent will again be presented
at the largest fair
on the Rhine this year.
This was announced by
brewery owner Peter
König in early February,
following talks with fairground
director Thomas
König. Last year, the brewery
had waived the
opportunity to appear at
the fair due to stricter
security regulations, introduced
after the Love-Parade
tragedy in Duisburg.
According to the owner,
some 150,000 Euro have
now been invested in a
longer (35 – 40 m) tent
allowing for emergency
evacuation along the full
length.
More than 60 examples of the “Streetfighter”
swing have now been built and
sold to parks and showmen on four
continents by the ride manufacturer
Technical Park. One of them is called
“Delirium” – and is toured mainly in
northern Italy.
For years, the ride owned by the Maggi
family has been a regular guest at the large
events in Como, Turin, Milan, Bergamo,
Genova, and Legnano, where it is very
popular and has a large number of loyal,
regular visitors. Whenever she has the time
away from her studies, Kendal, the charming
daughter of the Italian showman family,
takes over the operator stand and paybox
of the “Delirium”, running the ride with
much enthusiasm and passion. ■
EXPO STAR
KALEIDOSCOPE
Since the beginning of this
year, the “Expo-Star” Ferris
Wheel is under the sole
ownership of the Oscar
Bruch Jnr. firm – his former
partner Peter Hablützel having
founded a new company.
This is exactly what both
showmen had announced at the beginning of
their cooperation in 2010: “a fifty-fifty partnership,
leading to an eventual full assumption of ownership
by Oscar Bruch Jnr. at a later date” (see KPR
3/2010). According to the Bruch firm, the “Expo
Star” Ferris Wheel will now gradually become a
new visual appearance, a concept for which has
already been devised. Last year, 6 of the wheel’s
total of 40 gondolas have already been closed in
to protect the passengers from wind and weather
– currently another 6 gondolas are being
worked on at the Gerstlauer firm. The “Expo Star”
Wheel will start into the season in Bern (CH). And
what about Peter Hablützel? He has founded a
new company, the Hablützel Consulting AG in
Beringen, Switzerland, a consulting and service
agency for the organisation and development of
large events, which provides organisers with
conception, technical and organisational knowhow
to reduce their workload.
COMEDY ON ICE
An unusual scene could be witnessed at the
“Kleinkunstmesse” 2011 in the Paderborn Schlosspark,
where artists and comedians present themselves
to trade visitors.
Showman Hartmut Nessel, providing fair visitors and
participants with ice cream, was fairly astonished to
see one of the participating groups of comedians
spontaneously giving a performance at his ice cream
van. Menacing-looking bodyguards in expensive suits
swiftly took up positions all around the ice cream van,
but then, just a few seconds later, the US President
Barack Obama drove up in a limousine. Well, it goes
without saying that he was a double!
NEW PRODUCTS
CRASH TEST
Draft of the compact
Spinning Coaster “Crash Test”
Text: Ton Koppei
Photo: Alex Pijl
From April, the Hendriks-Hinzen firm will present
a brand new coaster in the Netherlands.
It is the more compact version of the so-called
“Spinning Coaster” that used to be built by the
French Reverchon firm. Now, the coaster is to be
launched by the recently formed C-Deal firm.
The firm is the official successor to Reverchon
and is run by former Reverchon managers. In
addition to the Spinning Coaster, the company
also offers other products from the catalogue of
the former Reverchon firm.
As the mouse theme has now been a well-known
feature for many years, and due to the fact that
various competitors also present similar coasters
in this design, Martin Hendriks has chosen a
different theme, which he developed together
with the Dutch designer Alex Pijl. As his new
coaster is meant to be a kind of car manufacturer's
“test track”, it will feature many original details
and additional moulded plastic decoration
elements. By the way, the “Crash Test” test track
will not be the only coaster delivered by C-Deal
this year. The Belgian showman René Bufkens
has also ordered two coasters, which are to be
delivered almost at the same time as the construction
from Hendriks-Hinzen. This season, the
“Crash Test” will also appear, among other
events, at the Tilburg Fair – to be more precise,
on the Stadthuis-Plein site.
WILD SPARK
Text:
Technical Park
The Italian ride manufacturer Technical Park has
a surprise to offer the industry, namely the novelty
attraction “Wild Spark”.
With its bouncing gondolas the attraction is currently
very much the trend. According to the wish of
several customers, the manufacturer has equipped
the “Wild Spark” with fixed gondolas, to provide a
family-friendly ride experience. The gondolas, accommodating
three passengers each, are mounted
on 14 arms. This results in a capacity of 42 passengers
per ride. The seats are equipped with
pneumatic shoulder restraints, already used and
well proven on the “Loop Fighter” attractions from
Technical Park. An original compressed air system
built in Spain – in other words, where the best
“Saltamontes” come from – provides for the bouncing
movement. The attraction, with a diameter of 16
metres, requires only one transport vehicle. The first
example is to go into operation in autumn. According
to Technical-Park Manager Marco Grigolo, the
ride will be approved by TÜV Süd before it is
delivered to a customer in Germany.
FRÜHJAHRSSEND MÜNSTER
Text:
The showmen will open this year's fairground season in
North-Rhine Westphalia with the Frühjahrssend from 10 th to
18 th March. This spring, the 9-day event will provide for an impressive
skyline.
Fairground Director Rölver was once again able to put together
an appealing fairground from the large number of applications
received, engaging five novelties for Münster in addition to other
well-known and successful attractions. For the first time, Michael
Goetzke’s “Rocket”, the Giant Swing “Konga” from Küchenmeister,
the “Booster Maxxx” (Hoefnagels/Denies), and Michel’s
“Domino” Funhouse will appear on the Hindenburgplatz. Moreover,
Ronny Deinert will celebrate the première of his novelty “Big
Spin” at the Frühjahrssend. Once again also to be presented will
be the cult ride “Disco Jet”, the visual appearance of which has
been enhanced by two new LED-walls on the tunnel wall. A Ferris
Wheel is a must at the Send; the “Europa-Rad” from Kipp will provide
its passengers with a fantastic view . Further fixtures among
the ride attractions at the Send will once again be the two dodgem
tracks from Heitmann and Schneider, Bonner’s large “Breakdance”,
the “Wellenflug” from Barth/Eberhard, and the “Wilde
Maus” from Barth. The funhouse and show booth sector will be
supplemented by Schneider’s “Pirates Adventure”, and according
to the owner Schütze’s Ghost Ride will present some new
creepy figures at Münster. A prominent occupancy with four highlights
and a ride height of more than 45 metres – impressive. For
the first time, there will be no family day, as due to the extended
duration of the event, its importance diminished. As is tradition,
the supporting programme will include the fireworks display on
Friday evening. Additionally there will be a Stadtwerke Day held
on Monday, and morning beer events on the Sundays during the
event. The redesign of the Hindenburgplatz is currently causing
a lot of debate once again, although this is an issue that has already
been discussed for years. We will not join in speculation,
but would rather wait for the outcome of the new round of talks. ■
SOLINGEN
Text: Michael Petersen
This year’s fairground season in Bergisches Land
begins with a shortened Solingen Frühjahrskirmes
by five days (23 rd to 27 th March).
The reason for the shortened running time is the success
of the local premier league-handball club, the
"Bergischen Handballclub”. The Solingen Frühjahrskirmes
takes place traditionally on the parking
area in front of the Klingenhalle – but even this area
will be in use for the home game of the BHC on the
31 st of March. Initially the event should have already
started at the beginning of March with its usual one
week duration. However, those responsible at the
Showman Association Rhine-Ruhr-Wuppertal feared
weather uncertainty - too often it had snowed or
rained at that time of the year. Finally however an
agreement could be made with the administrating
association for a five-day event on the parking area
at the end of the month. And so for the first time, the
Solingen Frühjahrskirmes will begin on a Friday. A
special opening offer will be the happy hour with
strongly reduced prices. The fireworks will be
presented on the Saturday, with the fair ending on the
family day on the Tuesday. The shortened period and
the first Friday beginning of the fair was the cause for
special tasks for the organiser. For this reason,
advertising has been considerably intensified. In
addition to the around 150 large placards, there have
also been additional banners placed in the city area,
advising of the new dates and shortened run of the
event. The advertising activities in the newspapers and
radio channels has remained just as high as previously.
The Frühjahrskirmes, thanks to the engagement on
the part of the Showman Association, has developed
into a good start event over the past years.
Following its success last year, the Booster "Maxximum”
from the Zuidema family will return once again
to Solingen. The Freefall Tower "Adrenalin” from the
Bügler family could be engaged as a novelty for the
event. Regular presentations at Solingen are the
dodgem track "Drive in” (Schmidt), the Musik Express
"Beach Party” (Milz/v.d. Bosch), Sterzenbach’s
simulator and the "Breakdance” from Klinge. And the
chain ride from the Fuhrmann family will travel to the
event from Wuppertal for the first time. The Markmann
"Aqua-Labyrinth” rounds off the offers on large attractions.
For the small fairground visitors there will be a
mini-dodgem, the "Saturn” kiddie chain ride, and a
kiddie carousel from Sührmann on offer. ■
“Extreme” and Freefall
Tower “Countdown” in
Rouen
The “Foire de la Saint-Romain”
in Rouen numbers among the
most important and largest
fairground events in France,
and the last major Volksfest
event of the year in France
(2011: 21 st October to 20 th
November). With regard to size
and attractiveness, it is a close
competitor to the Foire du
Trone in Paris, often marking
the season’s last venue for
novelty attractions at the end
of the year. The showmen even
put up with having to travel
great distances to present
their attractions – in short: the
crème de la crème - the very
best the French showmen
have to offer, including such
attractions as the tallest
travelling freefall tower or the
largest transportable coaster
in France.
Rouen (F)
The port of Rouen in Normandy is located some
80 kilometres from the sea, on the idyllic Seine
River, which virtually splits the town into two halves.
Green parks and endless long pathways invite visitors
to walk along the river, and provide a decidedly
Mediterranean flair. The town, with its numerous
sights, attracts many a tourist all year round. Rouen
used to be called the “town of one hundred spires”,
but many of the buildings were destroyed during the
Second World War. These days, the city located
some 110 kilometres north-west of Paris has more
than 110,000 residents. The colourful showman
event, attracting both locals and tourists, is built up
directly on the banks of the Seine every year at the
end of October. After sundown, the longish fairground
is a real feast for the eyes with the lights of
12

SPECIAL
The coaster “King” and
“Infernal Toboggan” in Rouen
more than 200 attractions reflected on the Seine.
While the event has a long history, it has been held
on the banks of the Seine only since 1983. In 2011,
the event began on 21 st October and was open daily
from 13.30 to 23.30, on Thursdays and Sundays
even up until 1 a.m. A total of 60 ride and funhouse
attractions for young and old alike, and more than
140 concession stalls including gastronomic
operations, were presented. Apart from a few
exceptions, most of the major attractions were built
up facing the river. A number of ride and funhouse
attractions could be placed in the centre at several
wide points, where the festival mile forked.
It was possible to welcome three novelties to Rouen,
“Maxximum” and
Alpine-Bob “Sweety”
13

SPECIAL
“Boomerang” swing,
and novelty “New Jump”
“Top Spin” and
“Insider” Shake
namely the “Virtual 5 D” cinema
from Courteaux Steed, Freddy
Thinel’s “New Jump” and the
Walkthrough construction,
“Palais du Rire”. For years,
Franck Pfausser has presented
his “Crazy Jump” with its bouncing
gondolas. The largest transportable
coaster “King” is also a
14

SPECIAL
High up into the sky:
Ferris Wheel, “Bomber Maxxx”,
and “Katapult” Ejector Seat
regular participant at the event. As a rule, the coaster
opens in Paris in spring and can be found in Saint
Tropez in summer, before travelling on to the season's
top event in Rouen. A novelty feature appearing
at the coaster was a huge LED monitor at the
front, where visitors were able to get a first impression
of the ride by watching a film shot from the
perspective of the front gondola. “Infernal Toboggan”
was the name of the second large coaster – a
classic family attraction. The trio was completed by
the “Crazy Mouse” with rotating gondolas, and
Franck Pfausser’s “New World” swept its passengers
40 metres high up into the sky. The “Bomber
Maxxx” Propeller and the “Katapult” also shaped
the skyline of the event. The Ferris Wheel was located
in the middle of the fairground, though its somewhat
boring white and blue lighting, as well as the
lack of decoration in the centre produced a rather
negative effect. And in the case of the Freefall Tower
“Countdown” one could easily ask the question
as to why only two of the four rows of seat benches
were occupied and used by passengers, despite
strong visitor attendance after sundown.
15

SPECIAL
Three ghost rides
appeared in Rouen
Toboggan, simulator,
and dodgem track
The Walkthrough construction
and Funhouse sectors
were represented by the
“One Man Show 2”, “Palais
du Rire”, and the “Palais du
Pirate”, along with the two
glass labyrinths “Incas”
and “Crazy Space”, as well
as the three Ghost Rides
“Psychos” and “Ghost
Train” (both featuring liveactors),
and the classic
“Train Fantóme”. The latter
offered family-friendly,
creepy entertainment
rather than seriously shocking
horror effects. The
“Breakdance” from Michel
is one of the long-running
hits among the round rides at Rouen, where it traditionally
offers a new colour scheme, decoration and
lighting every year. Further regular guests are the
“Top Spin Fresh”, the still very popular “Bayernkurve”,
the “Crazy Dance 2” and the “Insider” Shake – the
latter negatively noticeable due to its very pallid backflash.
Ride attractions for the whole family were the
“Happy Sailor”, the “Sauterelle” Saltamontes, as well
as the “Sweety” Matterhorn, which surely numbers
among the best rides in France in every regard,
boasting the finest visual appearance, operation,
lighting and pure 'showiness'!
16

SPECIAL
Fun in the “Top Spin”
Other attractions presented were the “Maxximum”
Propeller, the “Move It, “Extreme” (Top Scan), “Toboggan”
and the “Boomerang” swing. Two simulators,
a go-kart-track and three dodgem tracks
rounded of the appealing and varied collection of
ride attractions. Younger visitors were able to enjoy
a large number of attractions, such as the nostalgic
ride from Kopp, the coasters “Le Chaungeur” (motor
racing theme) and “Afrika Park”, the track rides
“Highway”, “Le Cartoon” or “Paris – Madrid” as well
as the kiddie Ferris Wheel “Aqua Balls”.
Somewhat nerve-racking was the noise level at the
countless games booths on the fairground, where
the operators seemed to stop at nothing – not even
the somewhat exaggerated announcements over
the microphone – to boost their turnover, although it
is true that they offered high-quality prizes, such as
food processors, refrigerators, and even motor
scooters. Apart from visually highly appealing
operations within this sector, there were however
also some shabby booths, which have no business
being presented at a renowned event like this.
It is well-known that the French are culinary connoisseurs,
and therefore it is no surprise that the often
high-quality fairground gastronomic operations
Games and
concession stalls
First class
gastronomic operations
were very well frequented at lunchtime every day.
Indeed, visitors often had to be lucky to get a seat
at all. Almost all the tents were beautifully decorated
and provided a cosy atmosphere. One of these
temporary restaurants even offered a photo exhibition
about the history of French fairground gastronomy.
Various meat specialities were prepared before
the eyes of the public on large grills built up in
front of the tents – and delicious they were! Grilled
suckling pig served with a salad and French fries is
a more conservative and highly popular delicacy in
Rouen. However, the menu also included spicy Merguez
sausages, Quiche Lorraine, snails, steak tartar,
or soups or beef Carpaccio to be enjoyed with
wine, cider or beer. Those who think that beer is sold
18

SPECIAL
Motor Racing and
roofed-over walking waterballs
at an excessive price at the Munich Oktoberfest would
be rather pulled up short at Rouen, where visitors had
to pay an alarming 7.20 Euro for half a litre of beer. In
addition to large restaurants and brassieres, visitors
could also enjoy many small and medium-sized snack
booths, with kebabs being the most popular, followed
by hamburgers, hot dogs, fried sausages, and French
fries. There was an almost unmanageable choice of
sweet specialities as well, most of which were sold
from huge confectionery wagons. A very popular
sweet speciality in France is “Guimauve de Paris”;
sticky caramel candies loved and dreaded at the
same time, which were offered in many colours and
flavours.
The poster for the event featured an unusual advertising
motif; namely a family depicted
in comic-style enjoying
themselves in the gondola of the
“Top Scan, and flyers distributed
incorporated discount vouchers
for use at the fairground. Many
visitors arrived by public transport,
such as tram or bus, which
took them directly to the main entrances
at “Les Ponts Corneille”
and “Guillaume-le Conquerant”.
As there are only a few car parks, visitors parked along
the roadsides and (unusual, but tolerated) on the central
reservation. By the way, as the fairground is situated
somewhat below the main thoroughfares along the
Seine, visitors have to go down a couple of flights of
stairs to reach the fairground. The 16 th and 17 th of
November were the designated family days with fare
and entrance prices between 1 and 2 Euro. Police and
security personnel at all entrances and on the fairground
guaranteed the public's safety.
CHRISTMAS MARKETS
WEIHNACHTSMÄRKTE 2011 IN DEUTSCHLAND – TEIL 2
As there was not enough
space left for all our Christmas
Market reports in our
February issue, this second
part is a look back at the
markets in Berlin, Potsdam
and Bochum.
The large Berlin Christmas
Market at the “Alexa” Centre
Berlin
The many Berlin Christmas Markets, from the
traditional market with fairground character on the
“Alexa”, the festive markets at the “Rotes Rathaus”
on the Alexanderplatz, the Gedächtniskirche and the
elitist market on Gendarmenmarkt, to the suburban
Christmas Markets such as the one in Spandau,
once again provided visitors with ample variety.
On Alexanderplatz, the most famous Berlin square,
the ice rink from the Bergmann firm was a crowd
puller on the market. The void left by a missing ride
in this location during the last few years was filled for
the first time by the “Venezianisches Pferdekarussell”
from Langenbach – and most conspicuously
too! The same was true of the huge pyramid from the
Jacob firm last year, and the brand new “Bergmann-
Pyramid” celebrated its Christmas Market première
on Alexanderplatz (see KPR 2/2012). Only some 100
metres from this famous venue, the large Berlin
Christmas market behind the “Alexa” Centre enticed
the public.
After a break in 2010, the Steiger Ferris Wheel was
built up there once again, the LED lighting array of
which brought a spectacular impression to the whole
capital. In addition to the regular participants, such
as “Magic”, “Breakdance”, “Schlittenfahrt”, “Revolution”
“Star Flyer” “Wilde Maus”, “Psychodelic” and the
two Ghost Rides from Rasch, the “Take Off”, the gi-
again being a landmark visible from afar. The
“Nostalgic Christmas Market” all around the Opernpalais
celebrated its 20 th anniversary. The milestone
birthday was slightly marred by ongoing construction
work around the Palais, which unfortunately
prevented the market from manifesting its usual
harmonious appearance and appealing ambience.
House” also made its début, and with the “Tollhaus”,
a well-known funhouse returned to Berlin (for a onceonly
guest appearance).
The “Berliner Weihnachtszauber” held in front of the
Rotes Rathaus is a fixture among the Berlin Christmas
Markets, with the blue Willenborg Ferris Wheel
CHRISTMAS MARKETS
Art: the Christmas tree
at the Gedächtniskirche caused
a great furore. To the very right:
the Lucia Christmas Market at
Prenzlauer Berg
The Market at the
Operpalais
Christmas time at the Rote
Rathaus in Berlin-Centre
platz, and the Tauentzien was open right up until 1 st
January, 2012. A special highlight, apart from some
170 stalls, was the “General Assembly” of angels and
Santa Clauses on Sunday 4 th December. Once again,
the Christmas tree at this market hit the national news:
due the reconstruction of the Gedächtniskirche until
probably the end of 2012, it was near impossible to
put up a tall tree, and a lot of creativity was required
by the organising Berlin Showman Association
again. The clever solution was the installation of a
“Schrottbaum”, or tree constructed from scrap – in
the true sense of the word. It was a 7-ton “Traffic Tree”
created by the Berlin object artist Thomas Plattner,
comprising of 1,000 pieces. While the responses of
local visitors to this object d'art ranged from amusement
to irritation, it was a read crowd puller for
tourists and people interested in art – and as mentioned
before, a first-class lead story for the media.
The Lucia Christmas Market in the Kulturbrauerei at
the Prenzlauer Berg in the Berlin district of Pankow
is without a doubt something special. It is completely
dedicated to the Nordic and Scandinavian countries,
which also characterized the product choice at
the some fifty stalls.
The historic group of buildings with two inner yards
and its 19th century industrial architecture is perfectly
suited for the event. Among the attractions there
were a chain ride, a small kiddie ride, a small Ferris
Wheel, and a bungee-trampoline. The organiser was
the Ketering GmbH & Fête Company. The name
“Lucia” comes from the Latin word lux – “the light”.
Lucia – the bringer of light – is celebrated in Sweden
on 13 th December.
BOCHUM
This year, a historic section as well as the miners’
village, were novelty features at the Bochum
Christmas Market in the city.
Every day at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. there was the performance
of the “Flying Father Christmas”. As a rule, peak
business hours at the stalls and booths in the centre of
the city began at 5 p.m. A special eye catcher deployed
in front of the event stage on the Dr. Ruer-Platz was
a pyramid group themed as a miners’ village and
containers designed as the so-called “Schwibbogen”
(traditional arched candle holders), built by the Image
Vertriebs firm from Grosskayna (Saxony-Anhalt), and
operated as a promotional feature at the market. In the
centre of the village there was a 12.5-metre pyramid
with a 15 m counter and original figures from the Ore
Mountains, flanked by containers designed with giant
Schwibbogen instead of tower constructions, with staff
being clad in proper miners’ clothing.
■
Many novelties at the
Bochum Christmas Market
POTSDAM
The organiser of the Christmas Market along the
Brandenburger Straße was once again the Cottbus
Coex firm with Eberhard Heieck. The company has
been successfully doing business organising city
festivals and Christmas Markets, as well as a booking
agency for artists, for more than twenty years.
Once again the Luisenplatz – which used to be called
“Platz der Nationen” and was, during the era of the former
GDR, the Potsdam fairground that intriguingly also
accommodated an underground car park – presented
a fairytale stage, a fairytale forest as well as a kiddie
railway bringing up the rear. A number of showman attractions
including, among others, the “Wiener Rad”
(Wilfried Danke, Lübbenau/Spreewald), as well as the
“Action World” Fun House (Hofmann-Jehn firm from
Impressions of the
Christmas Market Potsdam
Eisenach), were built up in this location once again.
The Russe, which was built by the Alexander firm from
Chemnitz in 1929 and mainly tours through Brandenburg
and Saxony from Easter up to the Christmas
Market, also appeared.
In Potsdam, it has been successfully appearing for
many years now and is very popular with the public.
Unfortunately, the large wooden eagle that used to be
mounted in the centre is lost.
WINTER WONDERLAND LONDON (GB)
With over two million visitors in
eight weeks – more than most
British amusement parks manage
in an entire season – Winter
Wonderland has become
officially the UK’s busiest fairground
event. Now in its fifth
and record-breaking year, the
latest instalment ran from
November 18 th to January 3 rd ,
within the prestigious “royal”
setting of London’s Hyde Park.
At times, entry to the Winter
Wonderland in was restricted
to visitors with pre-booked
tickets due to the crowds
For sheer variety of fairground
attractions, events such as
Hull Fair, Nottingham Goose Fair
and Newcastle’s ‘Hoppings’ still
lead the way, but in a relatively
short amount of time, Winter
Wonderland has built a loyal
following with its distinctive mix of
festive-themed attractions, winning
recognition as “Best Consumer
Event” in the Visit London
Awards. The event’s central London
location ensures plenty of
star patronage and media coverage,
and among the many
celebrities visiting this year were
Prince Harry, Kate Moss, Kelly
Rowland, and even the Prime
Minister, David Cameron. After
four years under the auspices of
PWR Events and AEG Live, PWR took full control of
Winter Wonderland for 2011, and will remain in
charge for a further two years following a tendering
process by The Royal Parks. Catering to tourists as
well as local residents, PWR director Geoff Popper
says he wants the event to feature on the “must do”
list of London attractions, alongside the likes of Big
Ben, Harrods and Madame Tussauds. He identifies
three distinct types of visitor – those that want to
sample the rides and attractions, those that want to
shop on the Christmas market and those that want
to make a night of it and sample the entertainment,
food and drink on offer. In this way, Winter Wonderland
is far closer to the German “Kirmes” or “Volksfest”
model than any other British fun fair. That drinking
has been incorporated so successfully into the
proceedings is a major achievement on behalf of the
organisers, especially when many fairs in the country
actively impose an alcohol ban for fear of trouble
from rowdy visitors. Popper says that the special
theming of Winter Wonderland’s attractions, which
he describes as, “a little bit camp and not very cool,”
discourages gangs from gathering.
Yet with much milder weather than last year’s near
Arctic conditions, the 2011 event became a victim
of its own success and for the first time in its history,
as visitors had to be turned away at peak periods.
This tended to occur around late afternoon
when family groups converged with those arriving
for the evening. At such times, entry was restricted
to those with pre-booked tickets for the ice rink, circus
or giant wheel, although in most cases the gates
were not closed for longer than 30-40 minutes. All
this comes against a backdrop of increased
austerity across the UK, so we can only assume
people like to treat themselves at Christmas to forget
all the doom and gloom!
Bringing warmth and colour to the heart of the British
capital, Winter Wonderland featured a terrific display
of themed attractions, many of them almost un-
24

CHRISTMAS MARKETS
recognisable in comparison to their usual appearance.
Attractions were split across three main rows,
Serpentine Road, New Road and the bandstand
area, plus dedicated zones such as Santa Land and
Alpine Adventure by local showmen, The Manning’s
Organisation. Covering a 1,600 square metre area
around the bandstand, PWR Event’s ice rink was
bigger and more majestic than ever, and a fitting centrepiece
to the event. Newcomers such as Buwalda’s
“Spinning Christmas Coaster” (Reverchon Mouse),
Botton’s “Santa’s Ferris Wheel”, Burton’s “Blizzard”
(Fabbri Booster), Bailey’s “Ski Party” (Fabbri
Megadance), Manning’s “Snowboard Deep Impact”
(Miami), Wallis’s “Barrel of Laughs” (Rotor) and
Gess’ “Ghost Train of Christmas Past” were
complemented by returning attractions including
Buwalda’s “Santa’s Flying Sleigh” (Wacky Worm)
and “Christmas Coaster” (Euro Coaster),
Ohlrogge’s “Winter Wonderland Express” (Action
Musik Express), Van der Veen’s “Snow Jet 2”, Manning’s
“Penguin Party” (Dodgems/Autoskooter) and
“Spinning Baubles” (Tornado), “Santa Land Express”,
Bugg’s “Ski Jump” (Freak Out) and
Thurston’s “Avalanche” (Waltzer).
Some attractions featured less festive theming but
were nevertheless impressive in their own right,
such as Saskia and René Rasch’s “Alpen Hotel”,
celebrating its world première in London. This fourtier
Fun House from Dietz really caught the public’s
imagination with its animated husband and wife figures
arguing among themselves on the front of the
show. The biggest talking point of 2011 on the British
fairground scene, Abie Danter Jnr’s “Air” (Zierer Star
Shape), also featured as part of the line-up at Hyde
Park. There was a change of a Giant Wheel for 2012,
with the Mondial-built construction of The Mellors
Group returning to Hyde Park, replacing the various
Bussink rides of Great City Attractions that have
appeared here over the years. The ride, which has
spent the summer with PWR Events in Windsor,
previously appeared in Hyde Park as part of the royal
wedding celebrations in April. Completing the
line-up of major attractions at Winter Wonderland
2011 were Zippo’s “Circus” (seven shows daily),
Most of the
attractions were elaborately
decorated and designed
and “North Pole” slide, Hinzen’s “Haunted Mansion”,
Antibes Land’s 5D Cinema (new from France),
plus numerous children’s rides and fairground
games. There were even quirky features such as the
Olten Hall (Hogwarts Express) steam train from the
Harry Potter movies and Buwalda’s talking tree,
which provided jokes and facts about The Royal
Parks to passers-by.
In addition to the Angel’s Christmas Market and
numerous kiosks, Winter Wonderland featured a
number of dedicated food, drink and entertainment
area – several of them familiar to German fairground
fans – including the “House of St Nicolas”, “Star Tavern”,
“Bavarian Village”, “Lighthouse Bar”, “Pig &
Apple”, “Spiegel Saloon” and “Carousel Bar”. New
for 2011, the latter was custom built by the Manning
family during the summer, and featured a rotating
centre surrounded by classic fair and film
memorabilia.
By fostering a “continental” fairground atmosphere,
Winter Wonderland has been able to cater to a wider
demographic than many traditional travelling fairs and
increased “dwell time” on the part of its guests. As well
as attracting overseas operators, the event has also
encouraged many domestic showmen to start theming
their attractions, and similar attention to detail can
now be found at a number of smaller
Christmas events across the
country. But with shipping and
accommodation costs to meet on
top of other operating expenses,
how viable is it for foreign showmen?
Kirmes & Park Revue spoke to Harry
Harder from Hamburg, who has
been participating at Winter Wonderland
for a number of years with
his gastronomic operations including Santa’s Pub.
“We used to be allowed to bring our own living accomodation
with us, but now we must rent an apartment
for two months,” he reveals. “This makes things
very expensive, but the hours of operation [10am-
10pm daily] are much longer than we can find in Germany,
so it is worthwhile for us.”
The 4 th “Winterland” with 85 participants in the Belgian
city of Hasselt was held for 7 weeks from 19 th
November 2011. Highlights – apart from Belgium’s
largest transportable ice rink (1,000 m 2 ) and the
gastronomic and sales stalls – were once again the
“Haus vom Nikolaus”, or Home of Father Christmas,
as well as the Christmas fair with the festively decorated
coaster (“Christmas Ride”), Funhouse (“Christmas
Hotel”), as well as the roundabout (“Winterland Express”).
Much to the delight of the showmen and the
organizers there was again an increase in the number
of visitors to 615,000 this time. The photo on the right
DUBLIN (IRL)
The Winter Wonderland
spirit arrived in Ireland this
Christmas, with a new
month-long event in Dublin.
Text: Owen Ralph
Photos: Owen Ralph, Ian Trowell
Première in Dublin:
the first Winter Wonderland
Festive fun fairs are nothing
new in the Irish capital, as
showmen William Bird & Sons
have been staging their popular
Funderland events at the
RDS exhibition centre for over
35 years. However the new
7up Winter Wonderland within
the grounds of the Royal
Hospital in Kilmainham featured
the same mix of fairground
rides, circus, Christmas Market
and food and drink that
has been such a hit the last
few years across the water in
the UK, notably London.
In fact, a handful of the attractions
were former features of
Winter Wonderland in Hyde
Park, but that should come as
no surprise since the organiser
of the new event in Dublin
was a key part of the team in
London until this year. Concert promoter AEG
Live teamed up with local company Synergy
Events, spending almost €2 million to bring the
presentation to life from December 8 th to January
8 th . A reported €300,000 sponsorship deal
from 7up – Ireland’s biggest soft drink compa-
In addition to pleasant
rides such as the Galloper,
there was also the spectacular
“Mission Space”
28

ny – enabled a major marketing
campaign, including
branding on 7up drinks bottles
across the country, in
addition to much media activity.
Meanwhile, the event’s
Facebook page attracted almost
10,000 fans in two
months. However, as the
entire population of Ireland is
less than London, the organisers
went into proceedings
with lower expectations, aiming
for 200,000 visitors over
the four week period. This figure
was duly reached over the
final weekend. What worked
in the event’s favour was that,
despite the country’s financial woes, Irish families
apparently spend more on their children at
Christmas than any other European nation.
Crucial in attracting visitors before Christmas,
when the event stole a march on Funderland,
were pre-booked groups. Various packages
were offered, including educational-focused
sessions for schools, and party packages for
local businesses. Approximately 20,000 circus
seats were sold before the event opened. As
in London, entry to the event was free and attractions
operated on tokens, priced at €1
each. Most large rides were three tokens each,
with Kroon’s KMG “Mission Space” – the headline
attraction – requiring six. Fossett’s “Circus”,
arguably Ireland’s premier touring show,
played up to seven times daily. Visits to Santa
were free, and a mug of Glühwein, German
readers may be interested to learn, was €5.
Attractions were sourced from the Netherlands,
Germany, France, the UK and Ireland,
and while several featured festive makeovers
for the event, in general there was not the same
attention to detail as in London, although this
will probably follow once the showmen know
the full potential of the event. The line-up included
the aforementioned “Mission Space”,
Mellors’ “Alpine Coaster” (Reverchon Mouse),
Cassely’s “Giant Wheel”and “Sea Storm” (Pirate
Ship), Bozec-Meneude’s “Bayern Kurve”,
Miller’s “Toboggan Coaster”, North’s Dodgems
(Auto-Skooter), Hendrik’s “Polar Express”
(Goldmine Coaster), Warrington’s Gallopers
(Carousel), Chair-O-Planes and “Santa’s
Slide”, and Van Mechelen’s inflatable “Ice Monster”.
Specialist food and drink outlets included
the “Spiegel Saloon” from Belgium, Kräupel’s
“Café Grell”, Heitkamp’s “Mühle” (Windmill
cafe) and a small bar from the local Porterhouse
Brewing Company. Helping reduce the
CHRISTMAS MARKETS
10 YEARS EURO
quite distinctively different to the more typical Christmas
Market fare, such as handmade wooden crafts, exquisite
glassware and hand-crafted jewellery made from wood,
minerals and semi-precious stones, the latter providing for
a truly stunning array of colour. But far and away the most
conspicuous sector was the array of gastronomic operations,
many of which were truly superb. The most quintessentially
Czech were the ubiquitous potato spiral stalls, serving
this intriguing snack formed in the simplest manner by
winding a blade with a spiral screw set at right-angles at
one end down through the potato, drawing off a continucost
of participation for overseas showmen, living
wagons were allowed on site (unlike in London).
The German, Dutch and French tenants
were also able to bypass the UK and get a direct
sailing from the continent and, as Ireland
is in the Euro zone, there were no currency
conversions to contend with before going
home. With a five-year agreement now in place
between AEG and the Royal Hospital, Winter
Wonderland will return to Dublin in late 2012.
Across the city, continental showman have
been participating in Funderland for many
years, with such well known attractions as
“Power Tower 2”, “Sensorium”, “Jura World”
and “Snow Jet” appearing over the years. Taking
place for the 37th time, the latest instalment
ran from St Stephen’s Day (December 26 th) to
January 8 th . Although most of the rides are builtup
inside the Simmonscourt Pavilion of the RDS
(Royal Dublin Society), a handful is placed outside
for maximum impact. A newcomer this
year from the Netherlands was Albert Ordelman
with his Fabbri XXL Inversion, joining Wallis’s
“Drop Zone” and Bird’s “Jubilee Wheel”,
“Jungle River” (Log Flume) and “Funderland
Farm” (pets corners). Indoor attractions included
Birds’ “Take Off” and Dodgems, Mc-
Fadden’s “Crazy Mouse”, Curry’s Waltzer,
“Techno Jump”, “Wacky Worm”, Ghost Train
and “Hollywood Fun House”, Magee’s
“Avalanche” (Miami), Noyce’s “Super Star”,
Crow’s “Extreme” (Orbiter), Bell’s “Sizzler
Twist”, and Van der Veen’s “Snow Jet”. Wristbands
were in use throughout the event, giving
visitors three hours of unlimited rides for
22.95/16.95 (regular/junior). A € 1 discount
plus an extra of riding was available for those
booking online, alternatively visitors could pay
€2 to get in and then pay for rides with almost
four decades of history under its belt. Funderland
enjoys a strong reputation amongst the
people of Dublin and the Bird family are known
to be shrewd operators. We can therefore expect
a tough fight over the coming years as
they attempt to hold onto their position against
the “new kids on the block” at Winter Wonderland.
There was in fact even more fairground fun to
be had in the Irish capital over the festive season.
Wallis’s Gallopers (Carousel) from England
was one of the key attractions at the Docklands
Christmas Market in George’s Dock from
December 8 th to 23 rd , moving to Disney On Ice
at the Citywest Hotel and conference centre
from December 26 th to 31 st . With all these showmen
vying for business in the same city, the real
winner was the general public.
was one of the first
fairground events in
Europe to accept the
it replaced the Irish
Then, at the height of
the “Celtic Tiger”, visitors
could enjoy
Mayer’s “Fliegender
just € 1.50 each, previously
in part to drive
wristband sales, it also
reflects the fact that the
paying just 9% instead
of 23%.
The Christmas Market in the Czech
Republic's historic Western Bohemian
city of Pilsen is popular, attracting
visitors not just from much
of Czech Bohemia, but also from
the neighbouring German states of
Bavaria and Saxony.
And justly so, for this is truly a traditional
market infused with a strong
'community atmosphere', and is
tastefully conceived and far less
'commercial' than many a Christmas Market. Although generally
well-attended, it mercifully spares us the frenetic
hustle and bustle of its Prague counterpart. Well, “generally
well attended” we noted sadly on the occasion of our
visit that visitor numbers were quite disappointing due to
the weather, which far from conforming to the Christmas
idyll of fluffy snowflakes falling gently onto a crisp, white
landscape replete with playful, rosy-cheeked children and
Glühwein-relishing adults, more closely resembled the
British or Irish variety of winter weather; dull, wet and windy!
The market’s array of delightful stalls offered much that is
30

CHRISTMAS MARKETS
Gourmet Eldorado:
the Christmas market in Pilsen
ous spiral which is then dropped into hot oil. Most stalls
however, boasted a motor-driven mechanical version of
this simple device. We simply must mention too the ?elné
plátky; the delicious and compellingly 'garlicky' Rösti-type
of potato cakes formed from shredded cabbage and potatoes.
Not to be overlooked either were the Trdelnik, formed
from almond-laced dough cooked on a spindle over hot
charcoal. Also characteristically Czech was the hot, honey
wine (not mead!), a pleasing alternative to Glühwein. The
particular 'vintage' we sampled was, as our charming patron,
Pavlina, explained, created from an old Czech recipe,
but was now made in Slovakia. Delicious, and at 13%,
decidedly heady! However, apart from this typical Czech
Yuletide fare there was also a number of gastronomic
operations offering spectacular old traditional Czech cuisine
that one simply does not typically find in restaurants.
Brambory, a savoury mix of potatoes, bacon, pork, onion,
garlic, peppers and, of course, klobása – the ubiquitous
Czech sausage without which any meal would be almost
unthinkable! We'll certainly be back next year, – and to
more 'seasonal' weather, we hope.
The Christmas market in
Winterthur
WINTERTHUR (CH)
Text & Photos: Daniel Kägi
The idea to hold a Christmas market in Winterthur
came from Susi Albl. Apart from the one in Basle,
no Christmas markets had taken place in Switzerland
for a long time.
The first Christmas market in Winterthur was held in the
Stadtgarten in 1997. Four years later the organising
body, the Christmas Market Association, was granted
permission to build up the Christmas market on the
Neumarkt. The centrally located site is more spacious
and provides for a festive market in front of the romantic
medieval city centre background. In cooperation with
Geri Schmid, the association designed beautiful
wooden booths. From the very onset, numerous showmen
committed themselves heart-and-soul to the
Christmas event. As many of them did not have the
staying power to organise and build up the Christmas
market over a number of years, showman Nobi Albl
had one snack booth after the other built according to
his ideas, such as the "Türmli”, a raclette stall (a hot
potato gratin), which has been a landmark in the entrance
area of the market ever since. Moreover, a grill
was built that turned out to be something of an eye
catcher. The Christmas Market Association attached
considerable importance to a balanced product
choice from the very beginning. There are even products
offered only in Winterthur, which makes the
Christmas market quite distinctive compared to other
events. Much attention is also given to the decoration
of the booths and stalls, and those who do not make
the effort risk losing their sites. This time, Nobi Albl contracted
the Hartman-Dienstleistungen firm to build the
"Alte Mühle”, thereby providing another eye catcher.
As it enjoyed strong visitor attendance, there are
already plans for a larger annexe. The 23-day Winterthur
Christmas market is one of only a few longer markets in
terms of duration in Switzerland. Meanwhile new Christmas
markets are springing up everywhere, also in smaller
towns. However, as most of them last only 1 to 3 days
and only occasionally up to 9 days, building up elaborately
designed and decorated Christmas market
booths is hardly worth the effort.
After rebuilding with
Rock” from Keith James
It’s now over a decade
(6/2000) since Kirmes & Park
Revue profiled the history of
the Orbiter. The British-built
machine made something of
an impression in Europe and
around the world, but since
the turn of the century has
enjoyed renewed popularity
in the UK with a new generation
of rides called the ‘Extreme.’
Orbiter, Remix, Extreme
First we are turning the calendar back to 1965 to
reveal a strange homemade construction travelled
as the “Flying Saucer” by the Gray and Appleton
families. Seen at the prestigious Nottingham
Goose fair in 1965 and photographed again
at various locations in 1967, there is little other
record of this machine. Yet it is significant because
this ride could be considered as a prototype “Orbiter”,
only with a single, circular gondola on each
arm rather than the more familiar cluster of three
cars. It is said that the gondola rotation was
through independent motors and suggested that
the ride was problematic in operation.
Woolls Mark I/II
It was the engineer and former showman
Richard Woolls, trading as Tivoli Enterprises,
that we have to thank for the development of the
Orbiter proper.
The ‘Mark I’ machine arrived in 1976 and was operated
by Woolls’ relative Henry Smith, as already
documented in K&PR. Whilst providing a
very new ride experience, it was some way off
the modern capability of the Orbiter. The construction
did not have a central lifting mechanism
and so, strangely, there was a pay box in the
middle.
To give the cars sufficient floor
clearance as the arms were lifted,
they were positioned high
up with drop-down steps for
the riders to embark/disembark.
Another feature was a
build-up floor, although
Thurston replaced this with a
fold-out floor, and also
scrapped the central pay box.
Several refinements were
made by the time the first ‘Mark
II’ Orbiters were delivered in
In a way, the predecessor
of the “Orbiter” and of further
developments: “Flying
control stand in the centre,
as well as folding steps for
loading the gondolas
1977 to Ocean Beach amusement park in Rhyl
(North Wales) and Blackpool Pleasure Beach. A
lifting centre meant no steps were needed for
loading of the cars, and the ride was intensified
with increased speed on both the centre and
each of the six arms. As well as on offset paybox,
the machine supplied to Willie Wilson in
June 1979 also featured a folding floor for an
easier build-up. A further 10 Orbiters were built
by Tivoli Enterprises for showmen in the UK, with
many more were shipped overseas to customers
in the USA, Australia, Scandinavia, the Netherlands,
and Germany.
Invaders & Megatrons
Wilson’s Orbiter established the ride at the top
of the many British showmen’s wish lists, and it
was not surprising that various other manufacturers
tried to get in on the act. The first rival machine
came courtesy of Norson Power, a hydraulics
company based in Glasgow. Working
with showman Matty Taylor, they applied their
skills from the manufacture of oil rigs to introduce
the ‘Invader’ in 1981. Three such rides were built
before the operation was successively challenged
by Woolls. The Norson Power Invader
was a very modern looking ride, themed after the
‘80s arcade game Space Invaders with “Galaxian”
heads moulded onto metallic flake fibreglass.
A further three Orbiter-style rides were
built by the showman William Thurston in 1987-
88. Named ‘Megatron,’ these heavy-looking constructions
have, by a chance of fate, all ended
up operating recently in Ireland.
Woolls Remix
In 1996 Tivoli Engineering bought a licence from
KMG to manufacture a 24-seat version of the
Move-It, a smart move that would pave the way
for the next generation of the Orbiter. Assisted
by his sons Ian and Mathew, Richard Woolls
used the same style of suspended seat on
Küchenmeister’s (now Eckl’s)
Techno Power ride, delivered
new to Germany in 1997. As
well as the more open seating
style, the speed was increased
once again and, thanks to the
overhead restraints, the arms
holdings the cars were made to
double back on themselves
and rise to an angle well in excess
of the traditional 90-degrees.
This particular machine’s
large floor and backflash were
completed by KMG, although
this is where the formal relationship
between the Dutch
and British manufacturers ended.
At the Leeds Valentines Fair in
2008, Tivoli supplied a ride
called the ‘Extreme’ to the
North of England showman Bil-
ly Crow. Supplied with Move-It style seats in addition
to a large name sign, superb airbrushed
backflash by the artist Paul Wright and “continental-style”
sloping floor, this slick-looking machine
(now travelled by Dane Crow) has been a
familiar fixture at some of the UK’s premier fairs
ever since. Two years after acquiring his Hard
Rock-themed ride with standard Orbiter cars,
the Scottish showman Henry Evans has his ride
converted by Tivoli with shorter arms to
accommodate the suspended seats now being
manufactured by Woolls. The ride’s new name
was most apt: ‘Remix.’ A year later the machine
was shipped to the USA, but has since returned
to British shores under the ownership of Wesley
Gill. A ride for the Adventure Island amusement
park in Southend-on-Sea in 2001 would be the
last of the old-style Orbiters built by Tivoli. Two
years later, the East of England showman John
Parrish picked up a second-hand Tivoli ride from
Wood Amusements in the United States. It too
would receive a Paul Wright backflash, as did Albert
Evans’ ride, delivered new in 2005 complete
with the giant lightning flashes in the centre that
would become the signature feature of these
machines. Seating 24 rather than 36 riders, this
was the first four-arm version built by Tivoli and
by now the name Extreme was beginning to
stick. A further four-armed version called ‘Evolution’
followed in 2006 for Tommy Wilson, to replace
the six-arm Tivoli Orbiter he had travelled
since 1991.
Things then went quiet for a couple of years, before
Irish showman Albert Cassely ordered a sixarm
‘Xtreme’, delivered in time for St Patrick’s
Day 2008. Since 2009 a steady stream of new
machines have followed for Stanley Gamble (6-
arm), Stanley Thurston (4-arm), Jimmy
Botton/Skegness Pleasure Beach (4-arm), Jason
Hebborn (6-arm), Billy Danter (4-arm) and,
in April 2011, Wayne Smith (4-arm). Several of
these have been decorated by the young showman
artists Frazer & Jonathan Day, evolving
something of a corporate look.
Extreme Tribute
Although the Orbiter has become Tivoli
Engineering’s signature ride, overseas companies
have also produced variations on the theme,
including the Italian manufacturers Fabbri and
Soriani & Moser. Other developments such as
Moser Rides’ Speed Flip, KMG’s Experience and
Turned out to be too
clumsy: The “Megatron”
Orbiter built by Thurston.
Here the example from Bell
Built by Perrin Stevens for
Darren Matthews: a four-arm
“Extreme”
SBF/Visa’s Super Loop also owe a certain
amount of inspiration to the Orbiter/Extreme.
Back in the UK, Keith James asked his local ride
manufacturer Nottingham UK to convert his
Norse Power Invader by adding suspended
seats in 1999. The ride resurfaced as the ‘Hard
Rock’ using the same seat shell the company
had developed for its “dangly leg” Miamis. However,
unlike the hit ride inspired by the Florida
city, no more conversions or new machines followed.
The ride with the closest visual (though
maybe not technical) resemblance to a Tivoli
machine came courtesy of the showman manufacturer
Perrin Stevens. Having earlier cloned a
Safeco Saltomontes, he completed a four-arm
‘Extreme’ for Darren Matthews in 2009. Following
an accident in August of that year, the Health
& Safety Executive served a prohibition notice on
the ride and, at the time of writing, it had yet to
return to the fairground circuit. A second ride
manufactured by Stevens for Edward Danter has
yet to open at all. It is Tivoli that remains the Orbiter
manufacturer of choice for most showmen, a
ride with which the Woolls family have enjoyed
“Extreme” success despite rarely advertising in
the amusement industry press, never exhibiting
at any trade shows and not even having have a
website. And that’s just the way they like it! ■
BASEL (CH)
View across the
Messeplatz, and the “Rocket”
Construction site
atmosphere on the Messeplatz
Text & Photos: Norman Vogt
When the 541 st Basle Autumn Fair – the largest fair
event in Switzerland – closed its gates on 13 th
November, most of the participating showmen
gave a positive review.
The 16-day event, which opened in sunny and pleasant
weather on 29 th October, once again guaranteed pure
fun on all eight sites, where a total of 496 fair attractions,
booths and gastronomic operations waited for
national and international visitors. According to the
organiser, the oldest fair event in Switzerland once
again attracted more than one million visitors. Therefore
it is no wonder that “D’Mäss”, as the locals call
their event, is a fixture in Europe’s event calendar. In
the run-up to the fair, the layout of the Messeplatz,
which could not be fully built up on, received extensive
media coverage. The inescapable question
was the selection of attractions in this location as all
three rides placed there were over-the-top constructions,
namely the “Maxximum” (Jolliet), “Enterprise”
(Buser) and Rodel’s “Speed”! Unfortunately, not even
the fourth attraction and Basle novelty, Blume’s “Event
Tower”, built up in front of the skeleton structure of the
large construction site, could present its striking appearance,
its impressive height or its attractive design.
As previously announced, there was no reduction in
the number of attractions presented, despite the large
construction site on both banks of the Rhine. Some of
the attractions found an alternative site in a not very
appealing side hall of the exhibition hall, such as –
among others – the kiddie track ride, kiddie scooter
and another kiddie ride. Apart from some minor
changes in the kiddie ride sector, the exhibition hall
was laid out just as it was the year before. With the
“Calypso” and the “Swing up”, two classic rides have
42

A LOOK BACK
Herbstmesse impressions
successfully maintained their position in Basle every
year, but the nostalgic sector was somewhat
excessively represented on the Rosental-fairground.
Once again very well frequented was the “Spuk” Ghost
Ride from Sipkema, which returned to the event after
an absence of two years. The fairground at the military
barracks where this year’s novelty, the “Rocket” from
M. Goetzke, was built up was crowded with lots of
rides. The largest transportable coaster in Switzerland,
the “Crazy Mouse”, as well as Maier’s “Monster”, Kinzler’s
“Breakdance”, the “Twister” (Bauer), the “Take
Off” Miami, dodgem track, kiddie Freefall Tower, and
the “Baby Club”, provided this fairground with an
impressive ride compliment. The walkthrough constructions
“Jungle Street” and “Tollhaus” (which made
its farewell appearance under the current owner) rounded
of the selection of attractions. The Kasernenstraße
adjoining the fairground at the military barracks was
newly laid out. There were doubts though as to whether
the handful of attractions placed there was worthwhile,
as most visitors preferred to take the direct route to the
military barracks. At the Barfüsserplatz visitors were
awaited by Zanolla’s “Insider” and two kiddie rides, as
well as the “X-Factor” Miami and a “Spring Tower”.
The “Expo-Rad”, which towered over the Münsterplatz
was joined by the “Musik Express”, “Wellenflug”, slide,
dodgem track, various kiddie rides and the “Geisterschiff”.
The Petersplatz, where according to tradition,
showmen and marketers were allowed to open their attractions
two days longer, was almost identically occupied
to last year.
EXHIBITION
INTERNATIONAL TOY FAIR 2012 IN NÜRNBERG
The International Toy Fair in
Nürnberg was held this year
from February 1 st to 6 th . It is the
leading fair for toys, hobby
and leisure articles, and all in
all 2,700 exhibitors from 63
countries presented more
than one million products,
including some 70,000 novelties.
As a result, it was hard
for the roughly 80,000 trade
visitors from 114 countries to
get a truly thorough overview
of all the products.
Novelty: the “Fun Schiff”
from Faller
Interesting for model builders were exhibits from
relevant manufacturers, who offered among
others a number of interesting novelties from the
fairground and circus model sector.
Faller
The presentation of the Faller novelties provided
a true surprise with Schneider’s “Fun Schiff”, a
longstanding wish come true for builders of H0-
scale models. The model of the Huss Swing Boat
would already have been ready for production
three years ago if the drive system had not
caused some problems. The drive glitches could
only be solved by the cooperation between the
Gebr. Faller GmbH and Uhlenbrock Elektronik
GmbH. The “Fun Schiff” model is powered by a
new, very quiet and powerful direct current motor
with metal gearing, which is mounted directly
on the axle. It slows down the descent of the
boat and accelerates its ascent, guaranteeing a
very smooth and realistic swinging movement,
which can be activated either manually via a keyboard
or by electronic control. The model
exhibited in Nürnberg was identical to the serial
model in every detail. Faller’s “Fun Schiff” will
probably be available from October at a price of
€ 199 (Art-No. 140420). In March, the model of
the “Traber-Hochseilartisten” will finally be
launched. The delivery was somewhat delayed,
as the manufacturer of a major accessory was
not able to deliver in time. In addition to the “Fun
Shooting gallery and
Schiff”, two fairground booths
will extend the Faller fairground
programme as from October.
Based on an old fairground
booth, the shooting gallery
“Saloon” with a laser-cut wooden
façade will be launched.
Behind its windows there are
figures giving the façade a
strong 'depth' effect (Art-No. 140475, € 23.99).
Moreover, there will soon also be a “Coffee to go”
on the H0-scale fairgrounds: The eye catcher of
this new concession booth will be the large coffee
pot (Art-No. 140476, € 22.99).
BUB & Premium Classixxs
The Roncalli set with a Unimog and two trailers
announced for September 2011 has now finally
been delivered. It was well worth waiting for
though as the models look splendid and are suitable
for a real circus train. This year, BUB will
launch the H0-scale models of the following
Roncalli models: the Hanomag ST 100 with a
caravan and a tarpaulin-covered trailer. While
the trailers are well-known models, the traction
unit was modified by a small flat bed (Art-No.
07603, in a limited edition of only 500 pieces),
NAG Büssing (Art-No. 07352, prices and delivery
dates are not known yet). Additionally,
three new 1:43 scale models from the Roncalli
series will be launched and delivered to shops
during the year: Goggomobil TL 250 (Art-No.
11108), VW T3a camper van with caravan (Art-
No. 11459), and MB LP 911 with tarpaulin (Art-
No.12156).
“Kirmesboxer” and parade wagon
from Busch
functional models in its novelty brochure: Two H0
scale fairground boxers knocking each other
about – a must in every boxing booth and/or
every parade. The fully assembled version will
be offered with an electric drive and control (Art-
Nr. 5196). The functional model “Tanzende Affen
mit Dompteuse”, or Dancing Monkeys with Animal
Trainer will be available (Art-No. 5190).
Busch
The successful series of parade wagons will be
extended by the wagon No. 7 “Kinder-
Löschzug”, and a carnival parade wagon (Art-
No. 40055 and 59950) to be launched in
September. Matching carnival items are offered
by the Preiser firm.
year: MB 813 Circus Krone box van (Art-
No.159470, € 16.50) and M 04 'jumbo' articulated
truck from the Circus Knie. The vehicle is
used for transporting camels, and the windows
and name sign are embossed (Art-No. 159746,
€ 24.50).Note: all the prices and delivery dates
WERNER MEINHARDT – MBK
Many novelties from
Werner Mainhardt – MBK
Beyond the toy fair in
Nürnberg, the small series
manufacturer from
Hilden begins the New
Year with the introduction
of an ample novelty
programme.
The highlight of which is
the elaborately designed
ice cream van from Schmitz. The slatted wagon,
the façade and interior decoration along with
four ice cream machines, leave nothing to be
desired. Further novelties are matching caravans
and baggage vans. Additionally, the
choice of fairground vehicles was substantially
extended. All models are already available as
fully-assembled versions or as construction
sets. Further major novelties, including a familyfriendly
ride and something “to fear” have
already been announced for this year. More Info
PREVIEW
The laying of the foundation
stone of the highest
coaster in Europe took place
a number of months ago
(in the background B&M’s
“Dragon Khan” from 1995)
China is on an expansion course
once again this year in the theme
park industry. Be it new theme
parks or massive installations of
new large attractions, China
continues on its forward march,
and fills the order books of many
a European manufacturer and
supplier. Asia, with its development
of new theme park
destinations is the leader at the
moment; it’s only Japan that
continues towards stagnation.
The new and without a
doubt spectacular family
coaster at Legoland Billund:
“Polar X-plorer” from Zierer
But other countries on the rest of the continents are
increasing their investments, after a certain amount
of reticence over the past years. And so the Six
Flags Group in North America and other operators
gave out contracts for a number of large projects.
Europe remains somewhat prudent, however a number
of large projects will be started, and there will also
be a new European record: the highest coaster in the
world will come into being in Spain. All the following
information is supplied without any liability as usual.
We have aimed at producing a complete listing. But
have we, despite our attempt, forgotten your novelty
at your park? If so then please inform us, and we will
be pleased to publish your information in our next
edition.
break through a covering of ice in the mountains
by way of a small freefall element. The
arctic animals are of Lego bricks, although on
the way back to the station, the train travels
through a new penguin enclosure. The new
theme area “Polar Land” will also receive a
new restaurant as well as a flight simulator (in
the building of the earlier “Power Builder“).
The investment will be around approximately
10 million Euro.
NOVELTIES FOR GREAT BRITAIN
Text:
Diverse Parks & Manufacturers
Alton Towers
“Nemesis Sub Terra” is
the name of the new attraction
at Alton Towers
The new and unusually
well themed “Magma” Freefall
Tower at Paultons Park
After a 2011 with no new rides, Alton Towers will
open 2 new attractions in 2012. “Nemesis Sub-
Terra” will be an indoor drop ride, with a theme continuing
on from the story of “Nemesis”, a B&M inverted
coaster that opened in 1994. Guests will find
themselves plummeting into the alien underground
catacombs from which the Nemesis was first disturbed.
The ride hardware is believed to have been
supplied by abc rides. On the opposite side of the
park in the “Cloud Cuckoo Land theatre” “Ice Age
the 4D Experience” will open as a more family friendly
addition. Based on the upcoming 3rd movie in the
franchise, guests will enjoy a 3D film combined with
physical effects including snow.
2012 will see the closure of the flat rides “Submission”
and “Enterprise” which need to be removed to
make way for the construction work of a new coaster,
code named “Secret Weapon 7”. It’s expected both
will re-open alongside this coaster when it debuts in
2013.
Thorpe Park
Thorpe Park will open the largest new ride in the UK.
“The Swarm” is Europe’s tallest B&M Wing Coaster
and begins with a 38.7 m tall dive loop straight off
the lift hill, and has 5 inversions with riders travelling
at nearly 96.5 km/h along 775 m of track. If the coaster
itself isn’t thrilling enough, the ride area is
extensively themed to a post apocalyptic disaster
zone. The trains and their passengers will experience
multiple near misses travelling under the wings of
crashed aeroplanes, the blades of helicopters, past
exploding fire trucks, and through the
rubble of a collapsed church.
Chessington World of Adventures
2012 marks the 25 th anniversary of Chessington
World of Adventures. To celebrate,
the park is putting on a new show “Dreamworks
Madagascar Live! Prepare to Party”.
Featuring a party atmosphere of music and
dance, families will see all their favourite
characters from the movie franchise, including
Alex, King Julien and the Penguins.
Following the performance, guests
will get the chance to meet the characters
face to face for photo opportunities. The
show takes place on an outdoor stage in
the new Africa section of the park, which will also be
equipped with an African Cafe and African delights
shop.
Legoland Windsor
In 2012 Legoland will open its first resort hotel and
debut the “Star Wars Miniland Experience”, an indoor
Walkthrough. Guests will enjoy authentic sound
and lighting effects.
Funland Hayling Island
Owners of Funland Hayling Island have primarily
invested in general improvements to the park with
the creation of a new entrance and installation of a
new ice cream parlour. The park has also purchased
the “Flying Saucer” ride from nearby Paultons Park,
and plans to build a 3D cinema later in the year,
featuring films from the Juice Group.
Pleasurewood Hills
Four new rides and a new show for the 2012 season.
Headlining the recent purchases is “Jolly Roger”, a
42.6 m drop tower believed to be a travelling model
supplied by Fabbri. It’s unclear why the park has
chosen not to install the 60 m drop tower for which
60

they were originally granted planning permission.
Other additions are “Pleasurewood Pony Rail” a
Pony Trek rail ride, “Lighthouse” a 10 m tall family
drop tower, both purchased from Loudon Castle
which closed in 2011, and “Laser Labyrith”. The
park’s Huss TriStar is also having a major refurbishment
that will include conversion from a travelling to
a park model, and will debut with the new name “Tide
Traveller”. The attractions represent the first major investment
in new rides since 2007 when the park installed
“Wipeout”, a Vekoma Boomerang relocated
from the defunct American Adventure theme park.
Paultons Park
A new ride will go into operation at Paultons Park in
time for the Easter holidays. “Magma” is an SBF Visa
Group Drop’n Twist tower ride that stands 24.3 m tall.
Guests will enter the caverns of a smoking volcano
where they board one of 16 seats before being blast
into the air while spinning, and then plummeting
back to ground. The level of theming of this latest ride
is a sure sign of the new direction the park is taking
following the success of “Peppa Pig World” which
opened in 2011. Elsewhere in the park the aged
“Magic Forest” Walkthrough has been replaced with
a new eatery, and the “Flying Saucer” rider has been
sold.
Pleasure Beach Blackpool
Pleasure Beach Blackpool is expected to announce
a Wallace and Gromit themed Darkride replacing the
“Gold Mine” that closed in 2011. The re-theming has
long been rumoured and was semi confirmed by
Nick Park, the creators of Wallace and Gromit. The
park’s indoor log flume “Valhalla” has also undergone
major renovation
Fun City
The new TV series of “Sooty and Sweep”, is proving
so successful that for this year, “Sooty’s TV Studio”
is being built at Fun City - Brean Leisure Park complete
with sets and props from the TV show. A new
Sooty meet and greet will also enable guests to
interact with the 64 year old bear that many generations
of park visitors will recognise. David Cadell, coowner
of Fun City,
also stars in the TV
series, which was primarily
filmed in the
park.
KMG are also supplying
the park with a
brand new Speed
propeller ride. ■
“The Swarm” shocks not
only because of the coaster but
particularly due to its theming
located not far from the Japanese
capital city of Tokyo, opens a
new large coaster, an investment
rhythm that the thrill park has
established. This year it was the
same situation once again.
Exciting views also for all
park visitors
Takabisha
All coasters that have been erected in this tradition
have left behind a lasting impression:
"Fujiyama” (Togo, 1996), "Dodonpa” (S&S, 2001) and
"Eejanaika” (S&S, 2006). Every single one of these
attractions still impress even these days, the around
two million mostly youthful visitors, who despite the
weakening theme park industry in Japan, continue to
storm the park every year in the small town of
Fujiyoshida.
Since the 16 th July 2011, the large coaster quartet at
the foot of the Fuji Mountains has been completed
with the latest attraction "Takabisha”, an ace up
the park’s sleeves: the construction in category
steepest drop, has outdone all attractions worldwide
with its 121° effortlessly. Park Management
wants each new large project breaking a world
record. Following the highest construction in the
world fifteen years ago, the fastest ten years ago, and
the attraction with the most upside down moments
five years ago, this is now the world’s steepest
construction with which the greater Tokyo area is
advertising itself.
Initially the choice of manufacturer was surprising:
the decision was made for an "Euro-Fighter” from
Gerstlauer Amusement Rides, and with that the first
coaster from a European firm has made its way into
the Japanese park. Up until the year 1999, it was
principally Japanese constructions that were in
operation. After that, two attractions were added from
American manufacturer S&S, and now also there’s an
attraction of German origin. The fact that Fuji-Q
Highland always searches for something very
special and that it was not Intamin, Vekoma or B&M
that stood a chance, is hardly surprising. The "Euro-
Fighter” from Gerstlauer had not been represented
in Asia up until now. Gerstlauer is represented in
Japan by the steel constructor Hanwa, and it was with
this firm that Fuji-Q had worked successfully together
recently in the erection of the Hafema-Rafting,
"Nagashimasuka”. Another plus for Gerstlauer is the
historical connection to Anton Schwarzkopf:
Schwarzkopf had been involved in the construction
of ride constructions for Japan until the early nineties,
in a quality that even today is treasured by owners
there. The big drawback of this type of coaster however
is the low capacity, but this appears to be of
lower priority for the park as constructions have been
built for years, which on peak visitor days generate
62

waiting times of up to four hours without any problem.
"Takabisha” has been erected on the free area
behind the acceleration section of the "Dodonpa” that
was occupied earlier by the legendary Shuttle
Coaster "Moonsault Scramble” from Meisho. The
park remains true to the design and basic layout: the
ride designers were made available an empty area,
with no height difference, no trees, and no interaction
with other ride constructions. The theming of the station
and the cars is also very plain, and the ride
concentrates on what it can do best: to turn the
passengers upside down! In earlier times a multilooper
was classified according to the number of
inversions; "Takabisha” on the other hand is from the
layout here, perhaps the most varied and interesting
looping attraction that was ever built. And not only
because the lift and launch are combined, but also
because the cars flip over seven times during the ride
without even once travelling through a conventional
loop.
RIDE FACTS:
■ Opening: 16th July 2011
■ Track length: 1,004 m
■ Track height: 43 m
■ Max. Speed: 100 km/h
■ 7 Inversions
■ Max. Banking: 121°
■ Ride time: 2 min 20 sec
(inc. 50 sec for breakpoint
and vertical lift)
■ Track gauge: 1.200 mm
■ 6 single cars,
■ Capacity: 650 p.p.h.
■ Manufacturer: Gerstlauer,
The idea of first a Heartline-Roll following the exit from
the station area is not completely new, but the fact
that it takes place in the dark station building, and
with that is an absolute surprise for those taking part,
is definitely innovative. Immediately after the eight
individual cars are accelerated to 100 kilometres
per hour, to travel through two inversions shortly
after, and an Inverted Top Hat. This is all followed by
the third inversion, the "Banana Roll” that not only
stands the passengers on their heads, but similar to
a Cobra-Roll, changes the direction of the cars
simultaneously by 180°, bringing the vehicles back
in the direction of the station building. Before arriving
however, the ride goes through a Flatspin and travels
easily over an airtime hill. After travelling through the
station building the ride continues into the second
half of the construction that begins with the 43
metre high vertical lift. Vertical lifts and steep
drops have been familiar to Japanese park visitors
for almost 30 years: in 1985 the first "Ultra
Twister” from Togo made its debut, and held the
world record with its 92° mini-drop for a long time,
which now goes back to Japan with the
"Takabisha” once again. In the case of the
"Takabisha” however, its 43 metres offers a
definitely higher venture downwards, followed not
by a series of Heartline-Rolls, but three further
inversions, all of which are different to each other.
Arriving at the final brakes, the occupants leave
behind 140 seconds that are rich in variety, and
1,000 track metres.
Due to its individual cars, the entwined layout, and
the almost silent operation, "Takabisha” appears
to be ‘nimble-footed’, and reminds one of the Wild
Mouse attractions and Gerstlauer’s Bobsled
coasters. And it’s particularly Japan that is a
country where a compact and light design is
valued, and where quality doesn’t necessarily
have to be equated with weight and bulkiness. And
it’s exactly the western subconscious that leans
towards the massive tracks and trains of the neighbouring
4 th Dimension Coaster "Eejanaika” from S&S,
and take it more seriously than the comparatively
filigree structure of the "Takabisha”. However there
should be no delusions, as the new attraction offers
more thrill in its power limit than many a Hyper-
Coaster! Another attraction will have to make way for
the next large coaster in 2016, as there is not enough
free space available for the next large construction.
Maybe though the well-trodden path will be abandoned,
and the next attraction will be incorporated into
an already existing construction, making the ride
experience then, without a doubt, congenial. ■
COASTER
Fast and snappy
rotations promise maximum
disorientation in the middle
of the French jungle
There are many small to middle
sized theme parks in the whole of
France where the quality or alternatively
the supply of attractions
teeter. A big exception to the rule
is Parc Le Pal near the well known
health resort Vichy, the registered
office of the manufacturer of cosmetic
products with the same
name.
Text & Photos: Stefan Peck
The station building may
well be very functional inside,
but it looks excellent outside
Le Twist
Le Pal is a mixture of zoological garden and
theme park, although a strict separation of both
areas is in evidence here: the zoo is located to the
ride side of the main entrance, and various theme
areas for ride attractions are located opposite.
The most modern attractions are in the relatively
new African area. The new kind of major attraction
of ride type “King Kong” from Huss was
opened in 2009, and is the second of this type
following the opening of the prototype the year
before at Belgian’s Bobbejaanland.
But a “Disk’O Coaster” from Zamperla also saw
the light of day a year later at the French Park Le
Pal. Whilst a similar construction already opened
two years ago at California’s Knott’s Berry Farm,
“Le Twist” is the first Spinning Coaster from Mack
Rides for Europe. Although there are in the meantime
a number of manufacturers producing this
type of coaster, the Southern German manufacturer
Mack, which included this art of track attraction
relatively late into its ride supply, is one of
the very few that offers this coaster type with trains
instead of conventional single cars.
The use of trains is very interesting for many
operators, as larger theme parks keep an eye on
high capacity. For this reason the operator of
Universal Studios also decided on such a track
construction from Mack Rides for its park in
Japan.
66

At first glance “Le Twist” appears to be quite
unspectacular, and quite small in size. However
the impression is definitely deceptive as the train
with four rotating cars masters the course at a
racy tempo. Additionally the individual track
elements are perfectly attuned to each other, so
that the ride, despite the quick procedure and the
rotation, runs very smoothly.
Following the very low-noise chain lift, the way to
the first drop begins with a left-right course where
the cars already begin to rotate so that the ride
guest doesn’t exactly know in which seating position
the drop will be taken. The train is brought to
its top speed either forwards or backwards to then
travel into one of the less impressive elements of
the construction by way of a left directional curve
near the ground. The steep and highly placed
curve is travelled through by the softly rotating
cars, so that the guests have partly really unusual
views from various angles. The second great
element is the helix that ends at the top, whereby
the lateral banking of the tracks is what’s special
here.
The train travels at a 90° angle in parts through
this area, which causes the passengers to lose all
orientation. Another left curve close to the ground
brings the train to an S-curve.
Shortly after, the train reaches the
final brakes to then travel leisurely
back to the station. Before that the
train is finally braked and the cars
are returned to their loading position
again.
The station area is very functionally
The attraction lives from
the lush vegetation at the park
67

designed, and the African theming is very
successful, fitting in well and integrating into the
overall area. Supported by the rich population of
trees and the new plants around the track attraction,
a terrific jungle type of atmosphere has come
into being. Some of the design elements such as
the seemingly “accident victim” cross country
vehicle and the fencing with wooden pegs round
off the package. In addition to the station building,
there is also a small gastronomy outlet with an outside
area as well as sanitary facilities, which also
fit in well to the overall picture.
Le Pal has rounded off its ride supply well with this
new attraction, and now offers various coaster
types for all age groups.
A structurally identical Spinning Coaster from
Mack Rides will be ready for the 2012 season at
Toverland in the Netherlands, which without a
doubt will also fit into the park’s portfolio excellently.
WATER PARK
A popular feature that
is already known from many
other water parks:
the regularly emptying
water container
Last summer had a lot to offer:
Rain, rain, and lots of rain. And if
all this moisture wasn’t enough,
then Fårup Sommerland could
go back for seconds – after all
both of last year’s novelties
came into being at the largest
outdoor water park in Denmark.
Text:
Marc Spies
Fårup Sommerland
Photos: Simon Aarestrup
There are also many older
water slides in the bathing area
of Fårup Sommerland
The family operated park located deep in the
north of Denmark was always good for a
surprise over the past few years: in addition to the
wooden coaster “Falken” opened in 2004, the
Launch-Coaster “Lynet” from Gerstlauer erected in
2008 became a much noticed extension of the ride
portfolio in particular, with which nobody had
really reckoned with.
Fårup however has a lot more to offer than just
coasters and ride constructions. Alongside of the
area with classic theme park attractions there is
also an additional water park that is accessible from
the park itself, which opened in 1989, and was a
completely new concept in Denmark.
Already in the opening year there was a Wild River
attraction that had been built by the Universal
Recreation firm available to visitors who regularly
stormed this area, and provided a healthy plus in
visitor numbers. For this reason, the water park was
successively extended so that these days the park
not only offers a wave pool and a kiddie
area, but body slides and a Bowl-slide have
also been installed. For a long time operator
Sören Kragelund had thought about
extending the water park by installing a new
slide and a kiddie playground area, and
already had concrete ideas about what type
of constructions they should be. With these
customer needs he contacted various
manufacturers, after which the contract
finally went to WhiteWater West in Canada.
In addition to a Family-Rafting slide, the
“Vandslangen” (English: Water snake), an
interactive water playground was also
ordered that offers various play possibilities
and slides for the mostly small guests. This
attraction also offers as highlight – just as all
larger constructions from WhiteWater West
– a 1,200 litre container of water that pours
over the laughing public at regular intervals.
70

Difficult Planning Phase
The planning and the approval procedures for the
extension however were a lot more difficult than the
decision for a suitable manufacturer. At Fårup – as
many other European parks as well – there is a
height restriction for new attractions. In order to
keep to the restriction of 15 metres, the nearby lake
was initially emptied and filled with 9,000 cubic
metres of sand in the immediate vicinity of the
coaster “Falken”. The new water attraction was
finally realised on this new tongue of land.
In an expensive process, the foundations were
anchored at an up to 15 metre depth, so that the
attraction stood safely. Noticeable here is the
relatively low number of supports, which gives the
slide an almost light and airy character.
The installation of the water playground on the
other hand would have been without problems
due to the low height of 9 metres and the large
number of fixation points distributing the load
evenly – if both attractions had been punctually
delivered and installed. Originally the extension
was to be handed over to the enthusiastic bathing
guests already on the 1 st of May.
This date however couldn’t be adhered to, so the
water playground by the name of “Regnskoven”
(“Rainforest”) only opened on the 2nd June 2011,
much to the delight of the countless children by
none other than SpongeBob SquarePants
personally. Exactly one month
later the 154 metre long slide
“Vandslangen” with speeds of
32 km/h went into operation.
Although these delays were
annoying as the advertising
campaign naturally used the superlative
“the largest water park
in Denmark”, WhiteWater West
proved to be accommodating
and donated an additional small
water slide a compensation for
the delay in delivery. Furthermore,
due to the tighter control of
water quality, the construction
required a water processing unit
and a new pump system, at the
cost of additional investment.
Three large sand and carbon filters
now provide an even and
The Canadian manufacturer
WhiteWater West supplied this
water playground
71

The park’s internal water
park has in the meantime
substantial dimensions
high water quality. All these technical finer points
mean one thing in particular to regular visitors:
they’re completely unimportant. The visitors simply
only want fun regardless of how many difficulties
were caused. And the fact that this investment has
paid off is impressively shown by an absolute visitor
number record of 641,000 guests in the 2011
season, despite the weather. Overall, around 33%
of guests visit the water park, so the decision for a
family friendly large slide was spot-on, and without
a doubt it’s not the last extension for the in the meantime
15,000 square metre sized area.
Plans for 2012
In order to reach a happy development of visitor
numbers for this year, three million Euro has been
invested this winter again, with the area of gastronomy
being kept in mind particularly.
A large 1,100 square metre restaurant will be
opened in the entrance area, and the picnic area
will receive a new roof.
A new family coaster from Zamperla will ensure
that there will be plenty of (ride)-fun – regardless
of summer weather conditions.
NO TAKE-OVER: FORT FUN
Not only the Kirmes & Park Revue,
but unfortunately also Compagnie
des Alpes, all local politicians,
and employees of Fort
Fun have been lead around by
the nose, and at the same time
the largest and most scurrile
bankruptcy has occurred in the
German amusement industry:
just as surprising as the sudden
announcement of the takeover
of Fort Fun Abenteuerland
shortly before Christmas 2011, it
was just as startling to learn of
the step back of the sales contract
only four weeks later.
Text: Frank Lanfer
Photos: Fort Fun, One World Studios
Abenteuerland Fort Fun was founded in
1967, taken over in 2002 by the French
state-owned Grévin & Cie. (these days CdA)
for 7 million Euro, and built out in the following
years for approximately 3 million Euro.
However as Fort Fun still didn’t quite fit into the
portfolio, there was an intention to sell from
2006, with no new investments made.
Matthäus Ziegler wanted to wake Fort Fun
from its deep sleep, and all direct and indirect
involvement was due to the criminal conman,
who appeared in person at the Paris head office
posing as millionaire heir of a distillery
dynasty. No wonder then that the promises
that the south German gave, who carries the
name of a world renowned cherry brandy,
sounded promising as well as visionary: he
wanted none other than to establish an international
tourist destination in the Sauerland
province, in order to increase the 350,000 visitor
number to 2 million.
Bogus Firm: One World Group
However after a short telephone call to the
Ziegler-distillery that what is obvious now, was
quickly revealed: there was indeed a fortune
in millions once, used for the recovery of the
company before it had to be sold to a Dutch
firm in 1992. The senior boss von Almosen
apparently lived from the proceeds, whilst junior
spent his time dreaming of a business reorientation.
Even at the beginning of 2012,
Matthäus Ziegler explained to the KPR smugly:
“In those days we entertained our customers
for a whole evening that caused a lot of
headaches the next morning, due to overindulgence.
However with our engagement in the amusement
industry we will give our customers a
whole day of entertainment at the very least,
which they will speak of for a long time.” All
very good, but these days everybody is only
talking about him; and it appears that he
actually believes all that he says. Bad enough
that it seems that there were no companies in
the amusement branch that got wise to him,
as Fort Fun was not the first object of his schizophrenic
desires.
Already a few years earlier, he and his One
World Group that is only an internet presence,
wanted to take over the Berlin Spreepark, and
only a year ago Abenteuerland Geiselwind,
with planned large extensions.
A quick glance into criminal records or an enquiry
at Creditreform would have been
enough to convict the “Baron of Lies”
immediately. Ziegler has already been sen-
last edition, One World Studios
is a legal and independent company.
Despite the situation in Sauerland
a change of name is out of
the question currently, according
to Olaf Mordelt, as the company
is already working on various
contracts for other customers,
and doesn’t want to destroy
One of the projects of One World Studios, which has nothing to do with the Zieglers
tenced for insurance fraud and the bankruptcy
of a noble disco, but has a deferral of sentence
due to apparent health problems. Why
normal business practices were not undertaken
earlier remains a mystery and there will
be relevant consequences.
The down payment of 250,000 Euro to CdA,
and the attestation of creditworthiness were
either boodle or faked. And the 52 year old
mother Christine Ziegler has also been arrested
in the course of the investigations. It appears
that she had mediated with her own subcontractor
company, Ziegler International
GmbH, in the purchase of a 13 million Euro
coaster for One World Holding GmbH, for
which the unnamed manufacturer had already
bank transferred the sum of 400,000 Euro as
a small thank you.
At the same time a consulting firm had been
contracted with the procurement of a 7.5 million
Euro bank credit in order to be able to pay
the park purchase of 6 million. However, the
scam came to light here when it was discovered
that the pledge of goods over an apparent
fortune was falsified, and the bank reported
the offence.
Currently the employees and fans of Fort Fun
are somewhat relieved, as Compagnie des
Alpes has cancelled the sales contract and
took over management again immediately.
Correction: One World Studios
Uninvolved in this situation is the firm One
World Studios of Olaf Mordelt (one of the two
successor firms of Heimo), which presented
itself as a member of the One World Group at
the London EAS event in September 2011.
However, different to our incorrect report in our
the efforts made up until now.
Olaf Mordelt: “Naturally we tried
to attain information about the
person Zeigler.
CdA also tried to do the same,
but the relevant enquiries came
to nothing. It’s quite possible
that older reports and information
were painstakingly removed
from the internet.
Thus we were trusting, and his
confident manner gave us no
reason to doubt the validity of
his statements.
At no point in time did we have
even a little doubt that the business
practices of the Ziegler
family were not correct; however
we were also not in
possession of any contracts on
the part of the Zieglers.
We distance ourselves from any
operation or activities that the
TERRA MÍTICA
At the end of 2011 the
Valencia Administration
announced that the theme
park Terra Mitíca that opened
in 2000 was for sale for an
amount of 65 million Euro.
The 40 hectare sized park,
once the pride of the Spanish
royal family, had to however
go into protective insolvency
by 2006 and sell bordering
properties to reduce its debts,
after Paramount had stepped
back from its management
contract at the end of 2004.
The new owner is the Spanish-Italian
company Aqualandia-Mundomar,
the management
of which had already
leased and operated the park
since July 2010. The City of
Valencia also wants to sell the
Luz Filmstudio and the Formula-1-track.
PERSONALITY: DISNEY
H. Jürgen Kagelmann
Disney
One of the most important personalities of the
Disney Parks has surprisingly decided to retire
at 58 years of age: Allen “Al” Weiss was President of
Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, a division of the Walt
Disney Co., in which the eleven theme parks as well
as the touristic companies of Disney are pooled together.
Moreover he also had the control over all
plans for future parks and attractions. His career began
as a minor employee in 1971 at Disney World,
after which he worked his way up the professional
ladder: in 39 years he had a total of 22 different
positions, which is proof of his extensive operational
“The Wizarding World of Harry Potter” is going
to California as well. The both in actual fact competing
companies and Warner
Bros. Entertainment and Universal
Studios have founded a
partnership in order to equip
the second film park from
Universal with this popular and
attractive number as well.
However there will be no own
theme area in Hollywood, but
only an attraction, and because
free space has long been a
scarce commodity at the
Californian film park, the “Amity”
area and with it the studio tour
attraction “Jaws” (which was in
capability. In 1994 he became Vice President, and in
2005 President of Walt Disney World in Orlando. For
him, all the staff was just as important as he himself,
and he was well loved in return. He proved outstanding
leadership qualities during the 9/11 crisis,
when strongly reduced figures and takings at the US
Disney parks forced deciding cost-cutting measures:
Weiss took on the Disney boss of those times,
Michael Eisner, and prevented a massive scale of redundancies
– as an alternative he offered short-time
work.
And Robert Iger, successor to Michael Eisner since
2005, has also announced that he will retire in March
2015. However he wishes to remain Executive Chairman
of the Walt Disney Company until June 2016.
And with that, Disney loses two of its strongest and
most popular Management personalities in the next
couple of years.
operation since the year of 1976) has to make
way. A definite opening date has not been revealed.
In the meanwhile though, the Harry
Potter area at Orlando is officially to “be substantially
extended”
