Martin S. Shanguhyia is an Assistant Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>African</strong><br />

History. His research interests include Colonial and<br />

Postcolonial Eastern Africa and Agrarian/Environmental<br />

studies.<br />

Kathleen R. Smythe<br />

Kathleen Smythe teaches <strong>African</strong> history at Xavier<br />

University. She teaches an introductory survey and a<br />

wide range <strong>of</strong> upper-level courses. Her current research<br />

and publishing draws on her experiences teaching early<br />

<strong>African</strong> history in the survey and explores themes <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>African</strong> history that can help informcontemporary issues,<br />

such as climate change in early <strong>African</strong> history and the<br />

role and organization <strong>of</strong> matrilineal societies. Her first<br />

book (Fipa Families) examined the common interest in<br />

socialization that Catholic missions and Fipa parents<br />

shared in southwest Tanzania.<br />

Alexandra Sowash<br />

Alexandra Sowash is a PhD student in the Government<br />

Department at the University <strong>of</strong> Texas at Austin. Her<br />

current research focuses on Chinese acquisition <strong>of</strong><br />

agricultural land in Tanzania and Mozambique. She seeks<br />

to determine Chinese investment strategies in Tanzania<br />

and Mozambique and understand the impact <strong>of</strong> foreign<br />
