Members 85 LEAGUERS: PATTY SMITH DEFINING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE PASSIONATE By her Dinner Club, Sarah Curfman, Susan Gabler, Kate Knight, Katie Kraus, Rachel LaTour, Elizabeth Monico and Rima Torgerson FUN FACTS Year joined the League: 1989-1990 Family: Husband, David and two daughters, Blake and Evan Biggest League Developing the Annual Fund accomplishment: Lasting Impression: “We will forever remember her sparkle, passion, humor and her humanity.” It is difficult to capture with words this woman whose friendship transcended generations, whose giving spirit never stopped, whose smile could light up a room, who always told it like it was and who brought great energy to any Junior League event. There is so much to share about Patty Smith; she truly exemplified what a Junior League member should be. Patty was passionate about the JLM and its mission. She served in many capacities including various Chair and Board positions, Nominating Committee and as a Sustainer Representative. Patty had a “just do it” approach to her volunteerism. After Chairing the Formula for Hope Luncheon for the Crisis Nursery, she felt there was an opportunity for the JLM to raise money through a similar approach. Thus began our Annual Fund. As the Chair of the first Annual Fund Committee, Patty pulled together numerous women she had met along her journey in the JLM. At the first meeting, the ice breaker challenged members to explain why they were moved to participate. It was clear that the driving factor was not an interest in fundraising, but rather an inability to say “NO” to Patty! Patty was also passionate about mentoring members and fostering relationships within the League. Three years ago, she had the idea to start a dinner club. Her criteria for inclusion were women who were serious about volunteerism, but also liked to relax and have a good time. We didn’t know one another well, so we enjoyed getting to know one another better as we gathered at each other’s homes to cook, drink, talk ... and mostly laugh. Soon we started going out for impromptu breakfasts, going on shopping expeditions, hosting baby showers, and riding Patty’s jet skis and cruising in the boat with her and her husband David. Our group faced both good times and bad … births, divorces, raising children, and raising money. Patty was like our “den mother,” offering us advice on everything from fashion to relationships ... always with a warm smile and a big hug. Patty was the first person we went to in tough situations we didn’t think we could face alone. For all of us and many others, Patty provided willing and thoughtful counsel, support, encouragement and perspective … and always with lots of laughter. It was heartbreaking news for the entire JLM when Patty was diagnosed with a brain tumor in the fall of 2007. It was difficult for this little sparkplug, who was always doing for others, to now have to focus on herself and fighting the cancer. Despite her illness, she still managed to do everything from sending gifts for birthdays to making donations to fundraisers. After a yearlong battle, Patty Smith passed away on November 10, 2008. We will remember her sparkle, passion, humor and her humanity. She was a great friend, a great mentor and a great Junior Leaguer. We will continue to set her a plate at our dinners and raise a glass in her memory. 4
