TOXICITY OF FLUORIDE<br />
2. Chronic poison<strong>in</strong>g<br />
– Applies to long-term <strong>in</strong>gestion of <strong>fluoride</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
amounts that exceed the approved therapeutic<br />
levels.<br />
– Cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>in</strong>gestion of high doses of naturally<br />
occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>fluoride</strong> will be reflected <strong>in</strong> changes<br />
<strong>in</strong> the teeth. Fluorosis of enamel is caused by<br />
defective matrix formation (hypoplasia)<br />
probably due to direct effect of <strong>fluoride</strong> on<br />
ameloblast matabolism. Lesion is usually<br />
conf<strong>in</strong>ed to outer third of the enamel giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
opaque white flecks appearance <strong>in</strong> mild<br />
fluorosis
