“Paramount’s exhibitor relations
team is always extremely
helpful in providing tremendous
support with our marketing and
promotional needs. Our contacts
have always gone out of their
way to support our special
events and promotions with any
PAT GONZALEZ: I love hanging out with friends
and family, breaking bread with loved ones,
shopping and volunteering with friends at Variety
charity events. I also enjoy making jewelry
and count handmade card-making among my
favorite hobbies. I have been with Paramount
Pictures since 2006.
WHY EXHIBITOR RELATIONS? I grew up in this
business. I started at General Cinema Theatres
in 1980 as a concession attendant. Although
I intended to go into the graphic arts arena, I
continued a career path at GCT and ended up
working my way into its national film marketing
group. I was tapped by Jim Tharp, then head of
DreamWorks SKG Domestic Distribution, in 1996
to head up the studio’s theatrical marketing
Services team. In 2006, I was fortunate to move
over to Paramount Pictures.
I LOVE MY JOB I have the privilege of working
with innovative minds daily; the best of the best
in movie marketing. I love brainstorming and
coming up with cool, creative ways to eventize
films. There is a tremendous amount of synergy
at Paramount, so my team and I interact with
an array of brilliant marketing and distribution
teams to develop promotions that generate fanfare
and buzz. I enjoy developing relationships
with exhibitors and am thrilled when we create
new and exciting concepts to elevate the profile
of our films and carve out imaginative ways to
approach our business. These long-standing collaborations
represent a mutual desire to break
through with marketing that drives fans into
theaters and reminds audiences why movies are
meant to be seen in theaters.
MY FIRST FILM I hung out with my older, teenage
cousins so my first movie theater memory
would be The Godfather. Not your typical fare
for a youngster, but the overall experience of
sitting in a darkened theater stayed with me. I
saw a lot of incredible classics such as The Sting
and Jaws at a young age.
MY FAVORITE FILM I have a few favorites, but
if I have to narrow it down to just one, I would
say It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s timeless. I love the
film’s themes and the ending still gets me. I cry
every time I see it.
MY GO-TO SNACK Theater movie popcorn
is the best! The moviegoing experience is
complete if there is fresh, pipin’ hot popcorn
involved.
WHY CINEMACON? Seeing showmanship at its
best! I refer to CinemaCon as our industry’s “Pep
Rally.” I find great enjoyment in seeing studios
bring their release schedules to life. I remember
the year we unveiled the first Transformers footage
in Las Vegas; the energy inside the theater
was palpable and excitement levels were off the
charts! I also look forward to seeing old friends
and colleagues during one of the busiest, most
fast-paced weeks of the year.
THE FUTURE I imagine that in-theater digital
displays and interactive holograms will greet
moviegoers with visually stunning, immersive
technology that will go beyond traditional terms
to captivate audiences in ways we have only
dreamed.
OUR 2014 SLATE We have a diverse and exciting
line-up of films that delivers talent in front
of and behind the camera. Our year includes
Darren Aronofsky’s epic drama Noah; Michael
Bay’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, and his
latest productions from his Platinum Dunes label,
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Welcome
to Yesterday. We have Brett Ratner’s Hercules,
starring Dwayne Johnson in the title role, and
the highly anticipated Interstellar, from director
Christopher Nolan with an all-star cast. On
Christmas Day, we will entertain audiences with
the sequel to Hot Tub Time Machine. Of course,
there will be a few other surprises that are yet
to be announced.
