The Academic Council (AC) serves as the Student Government’s primary channel of lobbying for student interest in academic matters. A few<br />

of the main objectives for AC are to create and evaluate proposals pertaining to <strong>University</strong> Policies and practices, investigate issues concerning<br />

academic quality for students of the <strong>University</strong>, and recommend the approval of resolutions and specific courses of actions concerning<br />

academic affairs.<br />

The Finance Council is responsible for maintaining up-to-date accounting records for each programming account, maintaining equipment<br />

inventories, assisting Operations Council members in the formulation of the budget, and purchasing new equipment for students.<br />

Student Media at <strong>Kettering</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>Kettering</strong> students produce a newspaper, The Technician; a yearbook, The Reflector; and operate a low-power radio station, WKUF-FM,<br />

94.3.<br />

The Technician is published bi-weekly each term and is available throughout campus.<br />

All students are entitled to a complimentary copy of The Reflector each year they are enrolled at the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>Kettering</strong>’s radio station, WKUF, provides music and programming for the Flint community.<br />

The Division of Student Affairs, located on the third floor of the Campus Center, oversees all student media.<br />

STUDENT SERVICES<br />

Student Orientation<br />

The goal of New Student Orientation is to acclimate new students to <strong>Kettering</strong> <strong>University</strong> as quickly and as smoothly as possible. New<br />

students attend a four-day student orientation program immediately preceding the beginning of their first academic term. During their first<br />

academic term, new students must attend a series of orientation classes.<br />

Additional goals of <strong>Kettering</strong>’s orientation are:<br />

• To maximize the new student’s contact with his/her peers.<br />

• To introduce faculty, staff, organizations, and offices at <strong>Kettering</strong>.<br />

• To enhance the student’s success academically and socially.<br />

• To minimize anxiety by acquainting the students with the campus, residence hall, classrooms, resources and services.<br />

In addition to the extended orientation weekend, the Orientation Office provides an optional opportunity for new students to attend an offcampus<br />

leadership camp with a select group of <strong>Kettering</strong> <strong>University</strong> student leaders. Applications for Camp COMPASS and Orientation<br />

information are mailed to new students approximately two months before their arrival.<br />

The Kagle Mentoring Program<br />

The Kagle Mentoring Program is a community based mentoring program. Mentors are upperclass, undergraduate <strong>Kettering</strong> students who<br />

provide a long-term mentoring relationship with a student starting in the ninth or tenth grade at selected local community high schools. The<br />

goals of the program are:<br />

• 100 % graduation from high school<br />

• 100% acceptance into a college/university<br />

• Increased self-esteem, confidence and leadership in both mentors and mentees<br />

• Increased volunteerism and advocacy in the Flint community.<br />

This is also a scholarship opportunity for mentors. For more information about the program, qualifications and application, please contact<br />

Office of Women Student Affairs<br />

<strong>Kettering</strong>’s Office of Women Student Affairs (OWSA) provides leadership concerning women’s issues in engineering to ensure our students<br />

live and learn in a productive climate that encourages them to reach their full potential. The OWSA sponsors a wide variety of resources for<br />

current and potential women students so they have the knowledge and information necessary to pursue their interests. To achieve our goals,<br />

we:<br />

• Host the OWSA website<br />

• Publish the OWSA newsletter<br />

• Provide peer and professional mentors for all women students
