KAHRAMAA
inks major contracts worth QR4 billion for the
development of electricity and water networks
KAHRAMAA signed recently a series of
contracts for major electricity and water
projects with a total value of QR4
billions. The contracts included QR3.65 billions
for projects of Phase 10 for developing and expanding
the electricity transmission network in
Qatar , about QR300 millions for the consulting
contract for the construction of water tanks and
contracts for strategic projects for developing
water systems, and QR64 millions for a pilot
project for installing and using of the advanced
network of smart meters at the county level.
Signing those contracts reflects the vitality of
infrastructure projects sector in Qatar and the
success of the partnership between KAH-
RAMMA and international, GCC and local leading
companies in electricity and water sectors.
Those projects also opened the door to KAH-
RAMMA in terms of investment in human capital
in company and the State through training
and qualification programmes for the corporation’s
engineers and technicians to be able,
after the delivery of those projects, to manage
them themselves, and confirmed the success
of KAHRAMAA to do so during the previous ten
years.
During the last five years, more than QR60 billion
was spent on projects of development and
expansion of electricity and water networks.
Developing electricity infrastructure is very important
and vital to keep up with the State’s development
plans in many sectors. Investment
today in the development of electricity and water
networks is very essential to keep the State
of Qatar an attractive environment for business
in a region that experiences strong economic
competition.
and continuous growth witnessed by Qatar in
many vital economic sectors.
Electricity Projects
The projects of electricity development and
expansion have gone through several stages.
Phase 5 project started in 2004 and took two
years to finish at a cost of QR8 millions in order
to strengthen the existing grid and meet
the needs of the growing demand for electricity,
while Phase 6 cost was at QR2.7 billions
and it completed the network expansion and
construction of about 37 stations that were operational
by the end of 2007. Phase 7 included
9 contracts with a total value of QR7.313 billions
and is considered to be one of the biggest
projects of electricity transmission in the world.
It aimed to create and develop KAHRAMMA
electricity grids including power stations, transmission
lines, overhead and underground
lines and the development of National Control
Centre. Work in Phase 8 started in 2009 and
was completed in the fourth quarter of 2010,
whereas Phase 9 cost was QR4.3 billions.
Water projects
Water projects include singing a contract for
consulting services for design and supervision
of water mega reservoirs in order to increase
water storage capacity estimated at 3500 million
gallons. This project is considered to be
one of the major projects of its kind in the world.
Its duration is 52 months and it will help KAH-
RAMAA supply water for seven days in ordinary
cases and longer in exceptional and emergency
cases, as well as installing 200km of pipelines
with large diameters to connect the new
mega reservoirs with current water stations, in
addition to 24-month projects to install water
distribution networks in Rawdet Al-Hamam
area with a total length of 195 km and diameters
ranging from 100mm to 900mm and
connecting them to the existing houses in the
same area, and installation of new water distribution
networks in Al-Sailiyah North (No. 53)
and Um Al-Zubara (No. 8) areas and suburbs
with a total length of 115 km and diameters
ranging from 100mm to 900mm. The duration
of this project is 24 months. To enhance
water strategic security, KAHRAMAA singed
a contract for consulting services for building
strategic waster mega reservoirs at the State
level with a total capacity of more than 1600
million gallons per day along with associated
transmission and distribution water networks.
This project will contribute directly to enhancing
water strategic security and securing a stock of
water to ensure the continuity of supplies for up
to seven days in ordinary cases and for longer
periods in cases of emergencies.
Smart meters
The goal of the pilot project of electricity and water
smart meters is to replace 17,000 electricity
meters and 15,000 water meters in Al Sadd and
West Bay areas with a new type of smart electricity
and water meters, and the project will last
for 16 months with a warrantee period. If the pilot
project is successful, KAHRAMAA will adopt
the technology of the smart meters pilot project
as a strategic option for meter installation and
reading. That will enable KAHRAMAA to provide
unique customer services in the whole country
by 2016 and improve procedures for managing
and monitoring electricity and water meters in
Qatar.
One of the benefits of electricity and water smart
meter system is that it allows reading the meters
remotely and directly without any human
intervention after installation. Data in the system
is automatically transferred by a sophisticated
fiber optic communication network to the control
centre in order to issue bills, which will help
in managing and controlling loads and obtaining
realistic and real-time readings. It is worth mentioning
that KAHRAMAA will introduce many opportunities
in the field of electricity and water infrastructure
in Qatar during the period from 2011
- 2021. The values of the development plans in
electricity generation, water production and expansion
of electricity and water networks during
that period is estimated at about QR69 billions,
and the expected investment in projects of developing
electricity networks during the next ten
years is estimated at about QR30 billions.
Major and mega international companies are eying
the projects of development and expansion
of electricity grids in Qatar.
the risks posed by the waste and misuse of this
vital resource, which adversely affects the process
of sustainable development in the region.
As for Qatar, water sector has a prominent role
in the accelerated development experienced by
the country. Given the importance of this sector
and its effectiveness, the Ministry of Energy
and Industry, represented by the Qatar General
Electricity and Water Corporation “KAH-
RAMAA”, took the initiative to develop and
modernize that facilities that are vital to the sector
in order to raise productivity and meet growing
demand in a number of ways to achieve the
requirements of social and economic development,
including the establishment of new water
plants to support water networks, the adoption
of parallel plans for the rehabilitation and maintenance
of existing plants in order to provide a
service of a better quality that meets the needs
of citizens and expatriates.
The investment required over the next ten years
in developing water system projects are estimated
at QR22 billions. That’s an important
initiative to address the unprecedented growth
witnessed by the state in all fields, especially in
infrastructure.
In order to achieve Qatar’s water security, KAH-
RAMAA developed a strategic plan to study
and implement the construction of mega water
reservoirs to secure a reserve of water in an attempt
to ensure the continuity of supply for up
to seven days under any exigent circumstances
in order to meet the requirements of the Qatar
National Food Security Programme.
At the end of his speech, the Minister stressed
that the preservation of water is a joint responsibility
as we all have to work to preserve water
resources and refrain from wasting it by instilling
a culture of conservation in the minds of the
youth.
HE Engineer Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, President
of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation
“KAHRAMAA”, said on the occasion of celebration
of the Arab Water Day that the State
of Qatar, represented by KAHRAMAA, marks
among all stakeholders in the water sector
and under the umbrella of the Standing Committee
on Water Resources under the Emiri Decree
No. (19) mandating KAHRAMAA to be the
Committee›s secretariat and host its meetings.
On this occasion I would like to praise my
colleagues in Water Affairs Department and
Customer Services in KAHRAMAA for their
outstanding efforts for providing safe drinking
water that conforms to the World Health Organization
(WHO) standards, optimizing water
management, continuation of infrastructure
projects, developing networks, supplying water
24/7, developing the strategic framework and
beginning implementing development projects
of a strategic reserve of water in the State in
line with the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the
National Strategy for Development from 2011
to 2016, in spite of the growth in the number of
customers, as the number of water customers
in the State of Qatar increased by 21.6% yearon-year
in 2011 to reach 225,851 customers
compared with 2010 statistics.
As in every year, the celebration of Arab Water
Day today coincides with GCC Water Week,
which also marks the celebration of World Water
Day (March 22 in every year). The celebration
also coincides with KAHRAMAA preparations
to host the 10th GCC Water Conference
in Doha, organized by KAHRAMAA, GCC Water
Science and Technology Association (WSTA)
and the GCC Secretariat General from April 22
– 24, 2012. I stress on KAHRAMAA responsibility
in this area and its commitment to the slogan
of the Arab Water Day “Preservation of water
resources is a joint responsibility” by calling
upon all citizens and expats to stop for one day,
which falls on Saturday March 3, 2012, to review
their habits of water use and achieve water
conservation, which is the responsibility of every
individual, organization and institution in Qatar.
During that day, we in Qatar General Electricity
and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) will monitor
any increase or decline in water consumption
at the State level, announce the amount of
the increase or savings in water use, make a
objective comparison of indicators of water use
and publish these conclusions later through the
media so as to make the celebration of this day
a milestone for the rest of the year.
solutions and designs for electricity and waterrelated
industries held in conjunction with the
conference with the participation of over 130
companies representing 23 countries from all
corners of the world. In his statements about
this grand event HE Dr Al Sada said that Qatar
adopts a plan which it has been implementing
for some years now to make Qatar as it is today
one of a very few countries with a surplus
Qatar continues to plan for the future in light of
the accelerated development that the country
is witnessing in all residential, economic and
industrial fields.
