Indication Narcotic analgesic supplement
Anaesthetic induction agent in patients undergoing in-patient surgery, when
endotracheal intubation and controlled ventilation are to be used.
Dose
As induction agent: IV bolus dose of ≥120mcg/kg (17mL/70kg) will induce hypnosis
and analgesia
Short procedures and outpatient use: initial dose 7-15mcg/kg at induction, with
intermittent boluses up to 15mcg/kg at 10-15 minute intervals
For procedures of longer duration, a higher dose may be given at induction

When surgery is more prolonged or traumatic, analgesia should be maintained by an
infusion of 0.5-1mcg/kg/min until 5-10 minutes before the completion of surgery.

Special precautions Contraindicated in those with a known intolerance to the medicine, or to other
opioid analgesics and in post-operative analgesia.
Consider possible risks and potential advantages before administration in
pregnant mothers.
Nursing not recommended for 24 hours
Dose adjustment necessary in elderly, hepatic and renal impairment, obese
patients and in hypothyroidism

Patient information Patient should wait 3-6 hours after doses of 1-3mL and 12-24 hours after higher
doses before driving or engaging in activities requiring mental alertness.
