Indication Narcotic analgesic supplement<br />

Anaesthetic induction agent in patients undergoing in-patient surgery, when<br />

endotracheal intubation and controlled ventilation are to be used.<br />

Dose<br />

As induction agent: IV bolus dose of ≥120mcg/kg (17mL/70kg) will induce hypnosis<br />

and analgesia<br />

Short procedures and outpatient use: initial dose 7-15mcg/kg at induction, with<br />

intermittent boluses up to 15mcg/kg at 10-15 minute intervals<br />

For procedures of longer duration, a higher dose may be given at induction<br />

When surgery is more prolonged or traumatic, analgesia should be maintained by an<br />

Dose adjustment necessary in elderly, hepatic and renal impairment, obese<br />

patients and in hypothyroidism<br />

Patient information Patient should wait 3-6 hours after doses of 1-3mL and 12-24 hours after higher<br />

doses before driving or engaging in activities requiring mental alertness.<br />
