12. If the hydraulic valve lifters<br />

can not be removed with the fingers,<br />

remove them with the tool shown in<br />

Fig. 17.<br />

CYLINDER<br />

HEADS<br />

1. Remove the exhaust manifold<br />

lower retaining bolts and tab wash<br />

ers and remove the exhaust mani<br />

folds. Remove the spark plugs.<br />

2. Remove the cylinder head<br />

bolts, and then install the cylinder<br />

head holding fixtures (Fig. 18).<br />

3. Lift the cylinder head off the<br />

block. Do not pry between the head<br />

and the block. Remove and discard<br />

the cylinder head gasket.<br />

OIL FILTER<br />

Unscrew the oil<br />

AND ADAPTER<br />

filter from the<br />

adapter. Remove the oil filter adapter<br />

assembly<br />

and oil pressure<br />

sending<br />

unit as an assembly. Discard the<br />

gasket.<br />

OIL PAN AND OIL PUMP<br />

1. Invert the engine on the work<br />

stand.<br />

2. Remove the oil pan retaining<br />

screws and remove the oil pan. Dis<br />

card the gasket.<br />

3. Remove the oil<br />

pump attach<br />

ing bolts and remove the oil pump<br />

and inlet tube as an assembly, and<br />

remove the oil pump drive shaft.<br />

Discard the oil pump gasket.<br />

FLYWHEEL<br />

1. On a flywheel for a manualshift<br />

transmission, mark the pres<br />

sure plate cover so that it can be<br />

replaced in the same position, and<br />

remove the clutch pressure plate and<br />

cover assembly.<br />

2. Remove the flywheel retaining<br />

bolts and remove the flywheel.<br />

CYLINDER<br />

FRONT COVER<br />

1. Disconnect the drive belt ad<br />

justing<br />

arm at the generator. Re<br />

move the generator support bolt at<br />

the water pump and the bracket<br />

bolt at the cylinder block. Remove<br />

the generator, brackets, and drive<br />

belts.<br />

2. Remove the water pump, pul<br />

ley, and fan as an assembly.<br />

3. On a car with power steering,<br />

remove the two cap screws and lock<br />

washers securing the power steering<br />

pulley to the crankshaft damper.<br />

Then remove the pulley.<br />

4. Remove the large cap screw<br />

and washer from the end of the<br />

crankshaft. Install the puller on the<br />

crankshaft damper (Fig. 19) and re<br />

move the damper.<br />

5. If the crankshaft sleeve is not<br />

stepped down (the same O.D. on<br />

both ends), remove it as shown in<br />

Fig. 20. If the crankshaft sleeve is<br />

stepped down (different O.D. on<br />

each end), remove it with a threejawed<br />

puller (tool 7675-N).<br />

6. Remove the screws<br />

the cylinder front cover to the<br />

block. Then remove the cylinder
