ment." 1-38 GROUP 1- ENGINES AND EXHAUST SYSTEM crankshaft forward against the thrust surface of the upper half of the bearing (Fig. 39). Hold the crankshaft forward and pry the thrust bearing cap to the rear (Fig. 39). This will align the thrust sur faces of both halves of the bearing. Retain the forward pressure on the crankshaft, and tighten the cap bolts to specifications (Fig. 39). 8. Force the crankshaft toward the rear of the engine. Install a dial indicator so the contact point rests against the crankshaft flange and the indicator axis is parallel to the FIG. 37 Seal to Block Installation tang fitting in the slot provided. 3. Install the lower main bearing inserts in the bearing caps. Tool-T58P-6701 -A 4. Carefully lower the crankshaft into place. Be careful not to damage the bearing surfaces. 5. Check the clearance of each main bearing following the proce dure under "Main Bearing Replace 6. If the bearing clearances are satisfactory, apply a light coat of engine oil to the journals and bear ings, then install all the bearing caps, except the thrust bearing cap (No. 3 bearing). Main bearing caps are numbered 1 thru 5 starting at the front of the engine. The arrows on the cap should be pointed toward the front of the engine. Set the dial on zero, then push the crank shaft forward and note the reading on the dial. 9. If the end play exceeds the wear limit, replace the thrust bear ing. If the end play is less than the seals in light engine oil, then im mediately install them in the minimum limit, inspect the thrust grooves. It may be necessary to tap bearing faces for scratches, burrs, nicks, or dirt. If the thrust faces are not defective or dirty, they probably the seals into place for the last Vi inch of travel. Do not cut the seal projecting ends. Do not use sealer were not aligned properly. The above test should not be performed on newly installed seals until suf ficient time has been allowed for the seals to expand into the seal grooves.
