then install the seal (Fig. 46). Drive<br />

the seal in until it is fully seated in<br />

the recess. Check the seal after in<br />

stallation to be sure the spring is<br />

properly positioned in the seal.<br />

CYLINDER FRONT COVER INSTALLATION<br />

1. Clean the cylinder front cover<br />

and the cylinder block gasket sur<br />

faces.<br />

2. Coat the gasket surface of the<br />

block and cover and the cover bolt<br />

threads with sealer. Position a new<br />

gasket on the block.<br />

3. Install the alignment pilot tool<br />

on the cylinder front cover so the<br />

keyway<br />

key<br />

in the pilot aligns with the<br />

in the crankshaft. Position the<br />

cover and pilot over the end of the<br />

crankshaft and against the block<br />

(Fig. 47).<br />

4. Install the cylinder front cover<br />

bolts finger tight. Position the gen<br />

erator support bracket and the gen<br />

erator adjusting arm bracket, then<br />

install the bolts.<br />

While pushing in on the pilot,<br />

tighten the cover bolts to specifica<br />

tions. Remove the pilot.<br />

5. Lubricate the crankshaft with<br />

a white lead and oil mixture and<br />

lubricate the oil seal rubbing sur<br />

face with grease.<br />

6. Install the crankshaft sleeve<br />

(Fig. 48) with the smallest O.D. end<br />

into the cylinder front cover bore if<br />

the sleeve is stepped down (dif<br />

ferent O.D. on each end).<br />

7. Line up the damper keyway<br />

with the key on the crankshaft, then<br />

install the damper on the crankshaft<br />

(Fig. 49).<br />

8. Install the damper cap screw<br />

and washer, and tighten the screw<br />

to specifications.<br />

On an engine with a separate<br />

power steering pulley, install the<br />

pulley on the crankshaft damper.<br />

Tighten the screws to specifications.<br />

9. Clean the water pump gasket<br />

surfaces and apply sealer. Position<br />

new gaskets on the pump and install<br />

the water pump, pulley, and fan as<br />

an assembly.<br />

On an engine with a power steer<br />

ing pump, the pump is retained by<br />

the water pump retaining bolts.<br />

10. Using a new gasket, install<br />

the fuel pump. Install the generator,<br />

brackets, and drive belts.<br />

OIL PUMP AND OIL PAN<br />

1. Invert the engine on the work<br />

stand. Position the oil<br />

pump drive<br />

shaft into the oil pump socket.<br />

With the shaft<br />

firmly seated in the<br />

distributor socket,<br />

position the oil
