Prop. 7: A gre<strong>at</strong> number <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>tians <strong>in</strong><br />

Africa adopt an ambiguous <strong>at</strong>titude<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> adm<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>tr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion. While <strong>the</strong>y are very<br />

scrupulous <strong>in</strong> carry<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> traditional<br />

rites <strong>of</strong> reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong>y give little value<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Sacrament <strong>of</strong> Penance. There<strong>for</strong>e, a<br />

serious <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>-depth study should be done<br />

on <strong>the</strong> traditional African ceremonies <strong>of</strong><br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, such as "palaver" (where a<br />

team <strong>of</strong> sages do public arbitr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

cases), <strong>and</strong> arbitr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> conflicts by a<br />

"team <strong>of</strong> medi<strong>at</strong>ors".<br />

Similar bodies can be set up on Justice <strong>and</strong><br />

Peace Comm<strong>is</strong>sions to ass<strong>is</strong>t C<strong>at</strong>holic<br />

faithful to seek conversion <strong>in</strong> a serious way<br />

through <strong>the</strong> celebr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sacrament<br />

<strong>of</strong> Penance.<br />

Prop. 13 : African Traditional Religion (ATR)<br />

Knowledgeable people who are converts<br />

from African Traditional Religion can guide<br />

<strong>the</strong> Church to an ever gre<strong>at</strong>er <strong>and</strong> more<br />

prec<strong>is</strong>e knowledge <strong>of</strong> African cultures <strong>and</strong><br />

religions, mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>cernment <strong>of</strong> true<br />

po<strong>in</strong>ts <strong>of</strong> opposition easier. Promote ATR<br />

studies <strong>in</strong> universities (even Roman) (not<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> AM). A diocesan multid<strong>is</strong>cipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

pastoral team <strong>is</strong> to dev<strong>is</strong>e a<br />

pastoral programme, th<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> grounded <strong>in</strong><br />

r<strong>at</strong>ionality, deliverance <strong>and</strong> reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Prop. 47-48: The role <strong>of</strong> women <strong>is</strong><br />

essential:<br />

Acknowledgement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir gre<strong>at</strong><br />

contribution to <strong>the</strong> <strong>family</strong>, society <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Church with <strong>the</strong>ir many talents <strong>and</strong><br />

resources. Condemn<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

depriv<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> rights <strong>and</strong> violence aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

<strong>the</strong>m.<br />

All o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>humane <strong>and</strong> unjust acts aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

women are equally condemned.<br />

The Synod F<strong>at</strong>hers propose:<br />

- <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegral human <strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> girls <strong>and</strong><br />

women (<strong>in</strong>tellectual, pr<strong>of</strong>essional, moral,<br />

spiritual, <strong>the</strong>ological, etc.);<br />

- <strong>the</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> “shelters” <strong>for</strong> abused girls<br />

<strong>and</strong> women to f<strong>in</strong>d refuge <strong>and</strong> receive<br />

cooper<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church’s apostol<strong>at</strong>e.<br />

<strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong> a gre<strong>at</strong> many Chr<strong>is</strong>tians <strong>in</strong><br />

Africa take an ambivalent stance towards<br />

<strong>the</strong> sacrament <strong>of</strong> Reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, whereas<br />

<strong>the</strong>se same Chr<strong>is</strong>tians are <strong>of</strong>ten very<br />

scrupulous <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> traditional rites <strong>of</strong><br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion. In order to ass<strong>is</strong>t <strong>the</strong><br />

C<strong>at</strong>holic faithful to walk an au<strong>the</strong>ntic p<strong>at</strong>h<br />

<strong>of</strong> metanoia <strong>in</strong> celebr<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g th<strong>is</strong> sacrament,<br />

through which <strong>the</strong> whole person <strong>is</strong><br />

refocused upon <strong>the</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> encounter with<br />

Chr<strong>is</strong>t, it would be helpful if <strong>the</strong> b<strong>is</strong>hops<br />

were to comm<strong>is</strong>sion a serious study <strong>of</strong><br />

traditional African reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

ceremonies <strong>in</strong> order to evalu<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

positive aspects <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir limit<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

These traditional pedagogical <strong>for</strong>ms <strong>of</strong><br />

medi<strong>at</strong>ion cannot <strong>in</strong> any way take <strong>the</strong><br />

place <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sacrament.<br />
