The <strong>in</strong>terconnectedness <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world takes us beyond our regional, n<strong>at</strong>ional <strong>and</strong><br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ental boundaries <strong>for</strong> good or <strong>for</strong> worse. We need each o<strong>the</strong>r as human <strong>family</strong> <strong>and</strong> all <strong>the</strong><br />
more so as bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> s<strong>is</strong>ters shar<strong>in</strong>g a common faith. We are all affected by <strong>the</strong> global<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>justice th<strong>at</strong> pushes people out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir home l<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> search <strong>of</strong> better opportunities <strong>of</strong> life. We<br />
are also aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> those who are victims <strong>of</strong> human traffick<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> widen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
gap between rich <strong>and</strong> poor, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>appearance <strong>of</strong> some values <strong>in</strong> society. However <strong>the</strong>re are<br />
also signs <strong>of</strong> hope like a gre<strong>at</strong>er awareness <strong>of</strong> our responsibility <strong>for</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> desire <strong>for</strong><br />
human <strong>and</strong> political freedom, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> care <strong>of</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion, etc. These signs <strong>of</strong> hope<br />
should not bl<strong>in</strong>d us to <strong>the</strong> challenges <strong>of</strong> today’s society. It <strong>is</strong> up to us to trans<strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> challenges<br />
<strong>in</strong>to opportunities <strong>for</strong> a New Evangel<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion – “new <strong>in</strong> its ardour, method <strong>and</strong> expression” (AM n.<br />
165).<br />
4. Towards a conclusion<br />
Some publ<strong>is</strong>hers will pr<strong>in</strong>t o<strong>the</strong>r texts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Synod (Karthala <strong>in</strong> Par<strong>is</strong>, Paul<strong>in</strong>es Africa <strong>in</strong> Nairobi,<br />
K<strong>in</strong>shasa <strong>and</strong> elsewhere). Let us take advantage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m to complete <strong>wh<strong>at</strong></strong> may be lack<strong>in</strong>g. Over<br />
<strong>and</strong> above <strong>the</strong> appreci<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong> unease <strong>and</strong> critic<strong>is</strong>m th<strong>at</strong> one could have<br />
towards th<strong>is</strong> document, I take seriously <strong>the</strong> Pope’s st<strong>at</strong>ement when speak<strong>in</strong>g about Africans:<br />
I can assure <strong>the</strong>m th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church loves <strong>and</strong> respects Africa. In <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> many<br />
challenges th<strong>at</strong> Africa seeks to address <strong>in</strong> order to become more <strong>and</strong> more a l<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
prom<strong>is</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> Church, like Israel, could easily fall prey to d<strong>is</strong>couragement; yet our <strong>for</strong>ebears<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> faith have shown us <strong>the</strong> correct <strong>at</strong>titude to adopt.… (AM, nn. 4-5).<br />
May <strong>the</strong>se words rem<strong>in</strong>d you <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong> your call<strong>in</strong>g as children <strong>of</strong> God <strong>and</strong> members<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one, holy, c<strong>at</strong>holic <strong>and</strong> apostolic Church! Th<strong>is</strong> call<strong>in</strong>g cons<strong>is</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> radi<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a world<br />
<strong>of</strong>ten grown dark <strong>the</strong> clarity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> splendour <strong>of</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t, <strong>the</strong> true light<br />
which “enlightens everyone” (Jn 1:9). Chr<strong>is</strong>tians must give all men <strong>and</strong> women a desire <strong>for</strong><br />
God <strong>the</strong> F<strong>at</strong>her, <strong>the</strong> joy <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ive presence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. They are also called to<br />
cooper<strong>at</strong>e with <strong>the</strong> grace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, so th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> miracle <strong>of</strong> Pentecost may spread<br />
throughout <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>of</strong> Africa, <strong>and</strong> everyone may become ever more an apostle <strong>of</strong><br />
reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace. (AM, n. 176).<br />
The Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion cannot say everyth<strong>in</strong>g on all situ<strong>at</strong>ions. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, we should take seriously <strong>the</strong><br />
words <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy F<strong>at</strong>her <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first part when he says,<br />
The Synod made it possible to d<strong>is</strong>cern <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal parameters <strong>of</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>for</strong> an Africa th<strong>at</strong><br />
seeks reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace. It falls to <strong>the</strong> particular Churches to transl<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong>se<br />
parameters <strong>in</strong>to “resolutions <strong>and</strong> guidel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>for</strong> action”. For it <strong>is</strong> “<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> local Churches th<strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> specific fe<strong>at</strong>ures <strong>of</strong> a detailed pastoral plan can be identified – goals <strong>and</strong> methods,<br />
<strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> enrichment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people <strong>in</strong>volved, <strong>the</strong> search <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> necessary resources –<br />
which will enable <strong>the</strong> proclam<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t to reach people, mould communities, <strong>and</strong> have<br />
