1. Some elements <strong>for</strong> a proper underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text<br />

1.1 The symbol<strong>is</strong>m<br />

It <strong>is</strong> not <strong>in</strong>significant th<strong>at</strong> Pope Benedict XVI would have chosen Ben<strong>in</strong> <strong>for</strong> h<strong>is</strong> second<br />

journey to Africa. 5 For many years, <strong>the</strong> Pope knew <strong>and</strong> (from reliable sources) held Card<strong>in</strong>al<br />

Bernard<strong>in</strong> Gant<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> high esteem, particularly when Card<strong>in</strong>al Gant<strong>in</strong> worked <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman Curia.<br />

H<strong>is</strong> trip to Ben<strong>in</strong>, to <strong>the</strong> tomb <strong>of</strong> Card<strong>in</strong>al Gant<strong>in</strong> (<strong>at</strong> Ouidah), enabled <strong>the</strong> Pope to pay homage to<br />

th<strong>is</strong> son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> African Church who had served <strong>the</strong> Universal Church. The impression made on<br />

Benedict XVI by Card<strong>in</strong>al Gant<strong>in</strong> cannot be measured, but I venture to suggest th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> positive<br />

image <strong>of</strong> Africa which <strong>the</strong> Pope bears comes <strong>for</strong> a gre<strong>at</strong> part from h<strong>is</strong> knowledge <strong>and</strong> esteem <strong>for</strong><br />

th<strong>is</strong> illustrious son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> African cont<strong>in</strong>ent with whom he was <strong>in</strong> close contact <strong>for</strong> a long time <strong>at</strong><br />

Rome.<br />

Secondly, I would say th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> choice <strong>of</strong> Ouidah was also symbolic on <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terreligious dialogue. By its proximity to <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> Voodoo, even without physical contact, it<br />

sent a message about dialogue with African traditional religion, a very present reality <strong>in</strong> Africa <strong>and</strong><br />

which <strong>the</strong> <strong>church</strong> cannot ignore. I will speak about it a little fur<strong>the</strong>r on.<br />

There <strong>is</strong> also <strong>the</strong> sad recollection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘G<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> no return’ through which passed African<br />

slaves brought to <strong>the</strong> Americas <strong>and</strong> elsewhere. By h<strong>is</strong> message, <strong>the</strong> Pope <strong>in</strong>tended to reconcile<br />

Africa with its agoniz<strong>in</strong>g past.<br />

1.2 The <strong>in</strong>ternal dynam<strong>is</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

Experts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2 nd African Synod have po<strong>in</strong>ted out th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion follows a schema <strong>in</strong><br />

three parts, which <strong>is</strong> not ‘see-judge-act’ but ‘v<strong>is</strong>ion – m<strong>is</strong>sion – pastoral action’. 6 It will be<br />

important to bear th<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>for</strong> a proper read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text as <strong>the</strong>se three parts are l<strong>in</strong>ked.<br />

There are:<br />

• The ‘V<strong>is</strong>ion’: The Introduction (AM, nn. 1-13), contrary to <strong>the</strong> ‘see’ element <strong>in</strong> social<br />

analyses, presents us with a positive image <strong>of</strong> Africa (AM, n. 13). Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> certa<strong>in</strong>ly contrary<br />

to <strong>wh<strong>at</strong></strong> we would have expected <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> Afro-pessim<strong>is</strong>m which our media make us<br />

used to experienc<strong>in</strong>g. As early on as th<strong>is</strong>, we notice a difference <strong>in</strong> compar<strong>is</strong>on to <strong>the</strong> image<br />

<strong>of</strong> Africa <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1 st Synod. It <strong>is</strong> no longer a wounded Africa, ly<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>the</strong> roadside wait<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Good Samaritan (Luke 10) <strong>of</strong> trhe first African Synod, but an Africa th<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> healed from<br />

its paralys<strong>is</strong> <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>vited to r<strong>is</strong>e <strong>and</strong> take up its bed <strong>and</strong> walk (Jn 5:8). It <strong>is</strong> an Africa<br />

th<strong>at</strong> has received <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> R<strong>is</strong>en lord <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> sent out on M<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> F<strong>at</strong>her,<br />

empowered by Jesus’Sprit.<br />

• The ‘M<strong>is</strong>sion’: <strong>the</strong> 1 st part (AM, nn. 14-99) <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> task th<strong>at</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>in</strong>iti<strong>at</strong>ed to give us life <strong>in</strong><br />

all its fullness (Jn 10:10). Th<strong>is</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sion flows from <strong>the</strong> v<strong>is</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> <strong>is</strong> a particip<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

5 The first journey to Africa was to Cameroon <strong>and</strong> Angola <strong>in</strong> 2009 to deliver <strong>the</strong> Instrumentum labor<strong>is</strong> to <strong>the</strong> B<strong>is</strong>hops.<br />

Let us recall th<strong>at</strong> Ecclesia <strong>in</strong> Africa was signed on <strong>the</strong> 14 September 1995 <strong>at</strong> Yaoundé <strong>in</strong> Cameroon.<br />
