AFRICAE MUNUS AND WHAT IS AT STAKE FOR MISSION<br />

IN THE CHURCH-FAMILY OF GOD IN AFRICA<br />

Fr. Richard Kuuia Baawobr (M<strong>is</strong>sionary <strong>of</strong> Africa) 1 .<br />

11 July 2012 Lusaka Zambia<br />

At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Second Special Assembly <strong>for</strong> Africa <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Synod <strong>of</strong> B<strong>is</strong>hops (4-25 October<br />

2009), we all read <strong>the</strong> F<strong>in</strong>al Message 2 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> participants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Synod with <strong>in</strong>terest, as well as <strong>the</strong><br />

57 Propositiones submitted to <strong>the</strong> Holy F<strong>at</strong>her <strong>in</strong> view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

We waited two years <strong>for</strong> th<strong>is</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> when we had almost <strong>for</strong>gotten about it, suddenly<br />

<strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion’s 3 imm<strong>in</strong>ent sign<strong>in</strong>g was announced with <strong>the</strong> title (Africae Munus = Africa’s<br />

commitment), with <strong>the</strong> d<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> place th<strong>at</strong> th<strong>is</strong> event was due to take place (19 th November 2011)<br />

<strong>at</strong> Ouidah, Ben<strong>in</strong>).<br />

In a world <strong>in</strong> which Africa <strong>is</strong> only spoken <strong>of</strong> when th<strong>in</strong>gs go awry, th<strong>is</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>is</strong> like a<br />

bre<strong>at</strong>h <strong>of</strong> fresh air, an <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>at</strong>ion to believe <strong>in</strong> Africa, to see it as a ‘spiritual lung’ (AM, nn. 13;177)!<br />

In <strong>the</strong> present article, I would like to br<strong>in</strong>g out th<strong>is</strong> freshness <strong>and</strong> some o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>is</strong>sues, which I hope,<br />

will help us to make <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion our work<strong>in</strong>g document <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church Family <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong><br />

Africa <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next few years.<br />

In do<strong>in</strong>g so, I would like to:<br />

• Present some elements <strong>for</strong> a proper underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text 4 .<br />

• Mention some <strong>is</strong>sues <strong>and</strong> challenges <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church Family <strong>in</strong> Africa<br />

• Exam<strong>in</strong>e ‘silences’ <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion;<br />

• Then, to draw a conclusion <strong>for</strong> us, as consecr<strong>at</strong>ed persons, orig<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g or not from th<strong>is</strong><br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ent, who give <strong>the</strong>mselves body <strong>and</strong> soul <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> African Church to be truly <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

service <strong>of</strong> reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> it to be <strong>the</strong> salt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> light<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world.<br />

1 The orig<strong>in</strong>al conference <strong>in</strong> French was transl<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>to Engl<strong>is</strong>h by Fr. Donald MacLeod, m.afr. <strong>and</strong> has been developed<br />

<strong>in</strong> some parts <strong>for</strong> th<strong>is</strong> present<strong>at</strong>ion to <strong>the</strong> Zambian Ep<strong>is</strong>copal Conference (11 th July 2012).<br />

1. Some elements <strong>for</strong> a proper underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text<br />

1.1 The symbol<strong>is</strong>m<br />

It <strong>is</strong> not <strong>in</strong>significant th<strong>at</strong> Pope Benedict XVI would have chosen Ben<strong>in</strong> <strong>for</strong> h<strong>is</strong> second<br />

journey to Africa. 5 For many years, <strong>the</strong> Pope knew <strong>and</strong> (from reliable sources) held Card<strong>in</strong>al<br />

Bernard<strong>in</strong> Gant<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> high esteem, particularly when Card<strong>in</strong>al Gant<strong>in</strong> worked <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Roman Curia.<br />

H<strong>is</strong> trip to Ben<strong>in</strong>, to <strong>the</strong> tomb <strong>of</strong> Card<strong>in</strong>al Gant<strong>in</strong> (<strong>at</strong> Ouidah), enabled <strong>the</strong> Pope to pay homage to<br />

th<strong>is</strong> son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> African Church who had served <strong>the</strong> Universal Church. The impression made on<br />

Benedict XVI by Card<strong>in</strong>al Gant<strong>in</strong> cannot be measured, but I venture to suggest th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> positive<br />

image <strong>of</strong> Africa which <strong>the</strong> Pope bears comes <strong>for</strong> a gre<strong>at</strong> part from h<strong>is</strong> knowledge <strong>and</strong> esteem <strong>for</strong><br />

th<strong>is</strong> illustrious son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> African cont<strong>in</strong>ent with whom he was <strong>in</strong> close contact <strong>for</strong> a long time <strong>at</strong><br />

Rome.<br />

Secondly, I would say th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> choice <strong>of</strong> Ouidah was also symbolic on <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terreligious dialogue. By its proximity to <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> Voodoo, even without physical contact, it<br />

sent a message about dialogue with African traditional religion, a very present reality <strong>in</strong> Africa <strong>and</strong><br />

which <strong>the</strong> <strong>church</strong> cannot ignore. I will speak about it a little fur<strong>the</strong>r on.<br />

There <strong>is</strong> also <strong>the</strong> sad recollection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘G<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> no return’ through which passed African<br />

slaves brought to <strong>the</strong> Americas <strong>and</strong> elsewhere. By h<strong>is</strong> message, <strong>the</strong> Pope <strong>in</strong>tended to reconcile<br />

Africa with its agoniz<strong>in</strong>g past.<br />

1.2 The <strong>in</strong>ternal dynam<strong>is</strong>m <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

Experts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2 nd African Synod have po<strong>in</strong>ted out th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion follows a schema <strong>in</strong><br />

three parts, which <strong>is</strong> not ‘see-judge-act’ but ‘v<strong>is</strong>ion – m<strong>is</strong>sion – pastoral action’. 6 It will be<br />

important to bear th<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d <strong>for</strong> a proper read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> text as <strong>the</strong>se three parts are l<strong>in</strong>ked.<br />

There are:<br />

• The ‘V<strong>is</strong>ion’: The Introduction (AM, nn. 1-13), contrary to <strong>the</strong> ‘see’ element <strong>in</strong> social<br />

analyses, presents us with a positive image <strong>of</strong> Africa (AM, n. 13). Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> certa<strong>in</strong>ly contrary<br />

to <strong>wh<strong>at</strong></strong> we would have expected <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> Afro-pessim<strong>is</strong>m which our media make us<br />

used to experienc<strong>in</strong>g. As early on as th<strong>is</strong>, we notice a difference <strong>in</strong> compar<strong>is</strong>on to <strong>the</strong> image<br />

<strong>of</strong> Africa <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 1 st Synod. It <strong>is</strong> no longer a wounded Africa, ly<strong>in</strong>g by <strong>the</strong> roadside wait<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Good Samaritan (Luke 10) <strong>of</strong> trhe first African Synod, but an Africa th<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> healed from<br />

its paralys<strong>is</strong> <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>vited to r<strong>is</strong>e <strong>and</strong> take up its bed <strong>and</strong> walk (Jn 5:8). It <strong>is</strong> an Africa<br />

th<strong>at</strong> has received <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> R<strong>is</strong>en lord <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> sent out on M<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> F<strong>at</strong>her,<br />

empowered by Jesus’Sprit.<br />

• The ‘M<strong>is</strong>sion’: <strong>the</strong> 1 st part (AM, nn. 14-99) <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> task th<strong>at</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>in</strong>iti<strong>at</strong>ed to give us life <strong>in</strong><br />

all its fullness (Jn 10:10). Th<strong>is</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sion flows from <strong>the</strong> v<strong>is</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> <strong>is</strong> a particip<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

5 The first journey to Africa was to Cameroon <strong>and</strong> Angola <strong>in</strong> 2009 to deliver <strong>the</strong> Instrumentum labor<strong>is</strong> to <strong>the</strong> B<strong>is</strong>hops.<br />

Let us recall th<strong>at</strong> Ecclesia <strong>in</strong> Africa was signed on <strong>the</strong> 14 September 1995 <strong>at</strong> Yaoundé <strong>in</strong> Cameroon.<br />

actual m<strong>is</strong>sion Jesus received from <strong>the</strong> F<strong>at</strong>her. An important place <strong>is</strong> n<strong>at</strong>urally given to <strong>the</strong><br />

m<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>try <strong>of</strong> reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion by Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> way he makes us partakers <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> m<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>try.<br />

• The ‘Pastoral Action’: <strong>the</strong> 2 nd part (AM, nn. 99-158). Th<strong>is</strong> pastoral action varies accord<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to <strong>the</strong> gifts <strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> Jesus has given to each member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church Family <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong><br />

Africa, but it aims to contribute to <strong>the</strong> real<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> v<strong>is</strong>ion st<strong>at</strong>ed from <strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

1.3 The ecclesial context <strong>of</strong> Africae <strong>munus</strong><br />

While it <strong>is</strong> quite normal to f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Africae <strong>munus</strong> references to <strong>the</strong> first Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion which<br />

followed <strong>the</strong> First African Synod (Ecclesia <strong>in</strong> Africa [1994]), it <strong>is</strong> none<strong>the</strong>less some<strong>wh<strong>at</strong></strong> surpr<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

to f<strong>in</strong>d references to o<strong>the</strong>r synodal documents such as Verbum Dom<strong>in</strong>i (after <strong>the</strong> Synod on <strong>the</strong><br />

Word <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Life <strong>and</strong> M<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church [2008]) <strong>and</strong> above all, references from <strong>the</strong> next<br />

synod on <strong>the</strong> New Evangel<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion (October 2012; cf. AM, n. 159-171) ‘new <strong>in</strong> its ardour, methods <strong>and</strong><br />

expression’, to promote encounter with <strong>the</strong> person <strong>of</strong> Jesus (AM, n. 165).<br />

In my view, th<strong>is</strong> way <strong>of</strong> proceed<strong>in</strong>g teaches us two th<strong>in</strong>gs. Firstly, it rem<strong>in</strong>ds us th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong><br />

a l<strong>in</strong>k betweent <strong>the</strong> two African Synods <strong>and</strong> demonstr<strong>at</strong>es how <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second do not<br />

revoke those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first. On <strong>the</strong> contrary, account should be taken <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

implement<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> evangel<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> Africa. It <strong>is</strong> a little like <strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>in</strong> rel<strong>at</strong>ion to <strong>the</strong> Law. Now,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second Synod, we need to cont<strong>in</strong>ue to plumb <strong>the</strong> very depth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> message <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> first Synod <strong>and</strong> observe how it l<strong>in</strong>ks up to <strong>the</strong> second.<br />

Secondly, <strong>the</strong>se references to o<strong>the</strong>r texts underl<strong>in</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church Family <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong><br />

Africa does not live separ<strong>at</strong>ed from <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Universal Church. There <strong>is</strong> reciprocity. Wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong><br />

be<strong>in</strong>g lived <strong>in</strong> Africa (or elsewhere) concerns <strong>the</strong> entire Family <strong>of</strong> God. There<strong>for</strong>e, already <strong>in</strong><br />

Verbum Dom<strong>in</strong>i, n. 99-103, <strong>the</strong> Pope echoes <strong>the</strong> African Synod on reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole Church <strong>and</strong>, <strong>in</strong> Africae <strong>munus</strong>, nn. 15-16, he refers to <strong>the</strong> Synod on <strong>the</strong> Word <strong>of</strong> God<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Life <strong>and</strong> M<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church. By th<strong>is</strong> fact alone, he demonstr<strong>at</strong>es <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g<br />

rooted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Word <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> order to live reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace. The <strong>in</strong>sertion <strong>of</strong> a<br />

whole section on <strong>the</strong> New Evangel<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong>vites us to take part <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole<br />

Church based on <strong>the</strong> M<strong>is</strong>sio ad gentes <strong>in</strong> order to deepen it. As <strong>the</strong> say<strong>in</strong>g goes: “if your neighbour’s<br />

house <strong>is</strong> on fire, you better help him/her to put it out. After h<strong>is</strong> yours could be <strong>the</strong> next to c<strong>at</strong>ch fire”<br />

From th<strong>is</strong> comes my conviction th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> way we put <strong>in</strong>to practice <strong>the</strong> orient<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Post Synodal Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion will have consequences <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole Church as well as <strong>for</strong> all humanity.<br />

Let us now l<strong>is</strong>ten to <strong>wh<strong>at</strong></strong> Pope Benedict XVI tells us about <strong>wh<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>stake</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> challenges <strong>for</strong><br />

m<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>in</strong> Africa today.<br />

2. The Church Family <strong>of</strong> God <strong>and</strong> her M<strong>is</strong>sion<br />

2.1 Ano<strong>the</strong>r … more beautiful ... Africa!<br />

Africae <strong>munus</strong> casts an exemplary look <strong>at</strong> Africa. It <strong>is</strong> a positive view th<strong>at</strong> acknowledges<br />

<strong>the</strong> m<strong>at</strong>urity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent (AM, n. 4). It considers it a l<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> prom<strong>is</strong>e (AM, n. 5) <strong>in</strong> spite <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

scars <strong>of</strong> its past (AM, n. 9). Africa <strong>is</strong> also a cont<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>of</strong> hope because <strong>of</strong> its <strong>in</strong>tellectual, cultural <strong>and</strong><br />

religious heritage (AM, nn. 9.11.13). Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> to be preserved, explored <strong>and</strong> made known. It <strong>is</strong> a<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ent with an immense richness (AM, nn. 24.79) which Africa <strong>is</strong> capable <strong>of</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> all.<br />

Africa lives <strong>and</strong> <strong>is</strong> led to explore (AM, n. 1), look<strong>in</strong>g towards <strong>the</strong> future (AM, n. 11), <strong>and</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> process <strong>of</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g up its challenges <strong>and</strong> mov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>ward (AM, n. 15). Respect <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> aged <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> place <strong>the</strong>y are given are qualities to be imit<strong>at</strong>ed elsewhere (AM, n. 47-50). Young people are<br />

part <strong>of</strong> its richness (AM, n. 60).<br />

In virtue <strong>of</strong> all th<strong>is</strong>, Africa has <strong>in</strong> itself ‘p<strong>at</strong>hways <strong>of</strong> hope’; through religious, social political<br />

<strong>and</strong> economic dialogue, a deep spiritual renewal <strong>is</strong> possible (AM, n. 11). From <strong>the</strong> outset, Africa <strong>is</strong><br />

presented as a ‘spiritual lung’ (AM, n. 13) <strong>and</strong> th<strong>is</strong> image <strong>is</strong> repe<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> document<br />

(AM, n. 177). Some people regret th<strong>at</strong> th<strong>is</strong> positive image <strong>is</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> price <strong>of</strong> a neg<strong>at</strong>ive image <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> west (<strong>at</strong> least), which <strong>is</strong> presented as ‘a humanity th<strong>at</strong> appears to be <strong>in</strong> a cr<strong>is</strong><strong>is</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

faith <strong>and</strong> hope’ (AM, n. 13), which could po<strong>is</strong>on Africa <strong>and</strong> from which Africa will have to defend<br />

itself to avoid contam<strong>in</strong><strong>at</strong>ion. 7<br />

The world will not be able to reconcile itself to a more positive image <strong>of</strong> Africa if we,<br />

sometimes <strong>in</strong> our campaigns to ra<strong>is</strong>e funds <strong>for</strong> our projects present a neg<strong>at</strong>ive image <strong>of</strong> Africa. Th<strong>is</strong><br />

positive image <strong>of</strong> Africa cannot leave us <strong>in</strong>different. The <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>at</strong>ion to reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion becomes all<br />

<strong>the</strong> more urgent if we do not w<strong>is</strong>h to lose or be m<strong>is</strong>taken about <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tellectual, cultural <strong>and</strong><br />

religious heritage <strong>of</strong> Africa.<br />

2.2 A Church-Family <strong>of</strong> God!<br />

The image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Churchas Family <strong>of</strong> God was accepted as a <strong>the</strong>ologically valid image<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> First African Synod (1994), but it had been <strong>in</strong> circul<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> different places be<strong>for</strong>e th<strong>at</strong>.<br />

It was teh case <strong>for</strong> example <strong>of</strong> Mgr Anselme Sanon <strong>of</strong> Bobo Dioulasso 8 (<strong>in</strong> Burk<strong>in</strong>a Faso). We can<br />

trace it back to <strong>the</strong> Bible <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> Second V<strong>at</strong>ican II th<strong>at</strong> took up St Cyprian <strong>of</strong> North Africa<br />

(martyred <strong>in</strong> 258) <strong>and</strong> h<strong>is</strong> image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church as People <strong>of</strong> God 9 <strong>and</strong> to <strong>the</strong> African experience <strong>of</strong><br />

7 Maurice Cheza, « Africae <strong>munus</strong> » <strong>in</strong> Afrique et Parole 94 (March 2012), p. 3<br />

8 Mgr Anselme Sanon spoke <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>se terms already dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> 1985 synod.<br />

<strong>family</strong> (<strong>in</strong> a positive manner) – th<strong>at</strong> <strong>of</strong> love, collabor<strong>at</strong>ion, bro<strong>the</strong>rhood <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong>giveness. Our<br />

Theologians still have to study <strong>the</strong> term more fully 10 .<br />

Jesus <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> senior bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> a multitude <strong>of</strong> s<strong>is</strong>ters <strong>and</strong> bro<strong>the</strong>rs (Rm 8,29). Our common faith<br />

makes us bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> s<strong>is</strong>ters (Mt 23,8-10; Mt 10,37 ; Lc 14,26). We might not have <strong>the</strong> same<br />

responsibility but, as <strong>in</strong> a <strong>family</strong>, we need each o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> order to develop <strong>and</strong> to fulfill our m<strong>is</strong>sion<br />

(1 Cor 12,8-11.28-30 ; Rm 12,6-8 ; Ep 4,11-13).<br />

Even if <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion does not use frequently <strong>the</strong> expression “Church Family <strong>of</strong> God”when<br />

speak<strong>in</strong>g about <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>in</strong> Africa <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong> Synod F<strong>at</strong>hers did (Proposizioni, 2.9.14, etc.), it<br />

does approve <strong>of</strong> it (AM, n. 3. 7.15.34.41).<br />

2.3. A Prophetic Family <strong>of</strong> God<br />

At several moments <strong>the</strong> Pope speaks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prophetic role <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church (AM nn. 30; 83). The<br />

m<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church-Family <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> Africa <strong>for</strong> reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion through justice <strong>and</strong> peace <strong>is</strong> a<br />

prophetic m<strong>is</strong>sion. Part <strong>of</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g a prophet, accord<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> biblical tradition <strong>is</strong> th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church:<br />

• announces God’s plan <strong>for</strong> African society (God’s v<strong>is</strong>ion <strong>for</strong> Africa);<br />

• denounces <strong>the</strong> counterfeits (AM, n. 21) (<strong>the</strong> counter-values, <strong>the</strong> evils) ; we can th<strong>in</strong>k<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> different conflicts <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>the</strong>y have on families; neglect <strong>of</strong> youth <strong>and</strong><br />

children; <strong>the</strong> abuse <strong>of</strong> power; etc.<br />

• commits itself <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> God on <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> people: <strong>the</strong> workshops th<strong>at</strong> ra<strong>is</strong>e<br />

<strong>the</strong> awareness about different <strong>is</strong>sues <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> lead to action; educ<strong>at</strong>ion, health<br />

<strong>and</strong> modern means <strong>of</strong> communic<strong>at</strong>ion. The Church itself as Sacrament <strong>of</strong><br />

communion (Lumen gentium, n. 1).<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> appeal to <strong>the</strong> Church Family <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> Africa to assume its prophetic voc<strong>at</strong>ion fully <strong>is</strong> present<br />

from <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>in</strong> Africa <strong>and</strong> has been reiter<strong>at</strong>ed several times over <strong>the</strong>se last<br />

few years 11 . However, it has to be aware th<strong>at</strong> its public role <strong>is</strong> not political, without however<br />

escap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> spiritual <strong>and</strong> withdraw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to itself (AM, n. 23). The Church <strong>is</strong> to <strong>for</strong>m<br />

consciences (AM, n. 22) accord<strong>in</strong>g to its social doctr<strong>in</strong>e (AM, n. 22) <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> justice,<br />

peace <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrity <strong>of</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion (AM, n. 23). Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong> order to become aware th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> love <strong>of</strong><br />

justice <strong>and</strong> love go toge<strong>the</strong>r, (AM, n. 25).<br />

Be<strong>for</strong>e preach<strong>in</strong>g to o<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>the</strong> leaders <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> community <strong>of</strong> Jesus’ d<strong>is</strong>ciples are <strong>in</strong>vited to<br />

put <strong>the</strong>ir own house <strong>in</strong> order:<br />

• B<strong>is</strong>hops towards <strong>the</strong>ir priests, <strong>and</strong> an exemplary <strong>and</strong> transparent management <strong>of</strong><br />

dioceses (AM, n. 101-104) ; <strong>and</strong> solidarity between dioceses. Many dioceses <strong>in</strong><br />

Africa tw<strong>in</strong> with o<strong>the</strong>r dioceses <strong>in</strong> Europe or America. How about do<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>at</strong> also<br />

across <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent? Th<strong>is</strong> would be a prophetic gesture <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> our political<br />

systems whereby <strong>the</strong> wealth <strong>of</strong> our n<strong>at</strong>ions are <strong>of</strong>ten concentr<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> a<br />

few.<br />

• Priests by <strong>the</strong>ir example <strong>of</strong> hol<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong> unity, even when <strong>the</strong>re are different tribes,<br />

by ongo<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion, by a serious spiritual life, by a radical choice to follow Jesus,<br />

chaste, poor <strong>and</strong> obedient (AM, n. 108-109). Solidarity (m<strong>at</strong>erial <strong>and</strong> spiritual)<br />

among priests <strong>is</strong> certa<strong>in</strong>ly ano<strong>the</strong>r prophetic gesture. We all know th<strong>at</strong> par<strong>is</strong>hes <strong>in</strong><br />

town have more means than those <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> rural areas. Wh<strong>at</strong> type <strong>of</strong> solidarity can be<br />

promoted so th<strong>at</strong> nobody feels penal<strong>is</strong>ed <strong>for</strong> serv<strong>in</strong>g God’s people <strong>in</strong> a rural set-up<br />

r<strong>at</strong>her than <strong>in</strong> town?<br />

• The prophetic witness shown by consecr<strong>at</strong>ed persons by <strong>the</strong>ir example <strong>of</strong><br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace, <strong>in</strong> particular <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir community life (AM n. 117)..<br />

• Lay people with civil responsibility: good example <strong>in</strong> work <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> daily life. (AM, nn.<br />

130).<br />

• The care <strong>for</strong> pr<strong>is</strong>oners <strong>and</strong> teir rights (AM, 83);<br />

As we are <strong>of</strong>ten rem<strong>in</strong>ded, actions speak louder than words. The sub-topic <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Synod which<br />

served as <strong>the</strong> golden thread <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>is</strong> prec<strong>is</strong>ely Jesus’ <strong>in</strong>vit<strong>at</strong>ion to h<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>ciples to be<br />

<strong>the</strong> salt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> e<strong>at</strong>h <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world (Mt 5:13-14). We are <strong>in</strong>vited to be examples by<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g our lives accord<strong>in</strong>g to Gospel values even when, as <strong>the</strong> Be<strong>at</strong>itudes tell us, <strong>the</strong>y are <strong>in</strong> conflict<br />

with more popular values (AM, nn. 26-27). Wh<strong>at</strong> we live gives credibility to our prophetic voice<br />

towards socio-political structures <strong>and</strong> enables us to challenge as well as propose changes <strong>in</strong><br />

society.<br />

2.4. A Family <strong>in</strong> Need <strong>of</strong> Reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, Justice <strong>and</strong> Peace<br />

When one looks <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> different areas <strong>of</strong> life th<strong>at</strong> are mentioned <strong>in</strong> which <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> need <strong>for</strong><br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, it becomes obivious th<strong>at</strong> no doma<strong>in</strong> <strong>is</strong> left out <strong>and</strong> nobody Is left out ei<strong>the</strong>r:<br />

In <strong>the</strong> <strong>family</strong> (AM, nn. 42-46) : elderly (AM, nn.47-50), women (AM, nn.55-59), men<br />

(AM, nn.51-54), <strong>the</strong> youth (AM, nn. 60-64), children (AM, nn.68);<br />

Protection <strong>of</strong> human life (AM, nn. 69-78);<br />

Respect <strong>of</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion (AM, nn. 79-80);<br />

Good governance (AM, nn. 80-83);<br />

Rel<strong>at</strong>ions to migrants, refugees (AM, nn. 84-85);<br />

Intern<strong>at</strong>ional rel<strong>at</strong>ions (AM, nn. 86-87);<br />

In ecumenical <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>tereligious dialogue (AM, nn. 89-94).<br />

We can <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e under st<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>s<strong>is</strong>tence on metanoia (conversion) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> courage th<strong>at</strong> it<br />

dem<strong>and</strong>s because it would sometimes mean go<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> curreny (AM n. 32). In <strong>the</strong> process<br />

6

God <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> one who reconciles us to himself <strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> through Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>and</strong> thus enables us to be<br />

reconciled with each o<strong>the</strong>r, with ourselves <strong>and</strong> with <strong>the</strong> entire cre<strong>at</strong>ion (AM, n. 19-21; 28,99).<br />

2.5. Solid <strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>for</strong> all!<br />

2.5.1 Initial Form<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

Africae <strong>munus</strong> <strong>in</strong>vites <strong>the</strong> Church Family <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> Africa to take Initial <strong>and</strong> Ongo<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Form<strong>at</strong>ion seriously. For sem<strong>in</strong>arians, <strong>for</strong> example, <strong>the</strong> document calls <strong>for</strong> hol<strong>is</strong>tic <strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion:<br />

<strong>the</strong>ological, spiritual, psychological, human, pastoral, <strong>and</strong> social, rooted <strong>in</strong> Gospel values (AM, nn.<br />

121-123).<br />

The personal rel<strong>at</strong>ionship with Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>is</strong> to be found <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> core <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> <strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion. He <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

one who reconcilies us with <strong>the</strong> F<strong>at</strong>her through h<strong>is</strong> de<strong>at</strong>h <strong>and</strong> resurrection; he reconciles us with<br />

ourselves <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, mak<strong>in</strong>g us ambassadors <strong>of</strong> reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion (2 Cor 5:18-20). 12 Peter Henriot, sj,<br />

suggests th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘spiritual lung’ <strong>in</strong>vites prec<strong>is</strong>ely <strong>the</strong> person <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> case,<br />

sem<strong>in</strong>arians also to mobil<strong>is</strong>e <strong>the</strong>ir spiritual energies (AM, n. 98) to be truly <strong>the</strong> salt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world (AM, n. 97) 13 . I suppose th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>se guidel<strong>in</strong>es are also valid, to a very gre<strong>at</strong><br />

extent, <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Initial Form<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> S<strong>is</strong>ters.<br />

2.5.2 Ongo<strong>in</strong>g Form<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

Among <strong>the</strong> elements mak<strong>in</strong>g up Ongo<strong>in</strong>g Form<strong>at</strong>ion, I would like to draw <strong>at</strong>tention to two<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m: Holy Scripture (<strong>the</strong> Word <strong>of</strong> God) (AM, n. 16), <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Social Doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church (AM,<br />

n. 32). The first element <strong>of</strong> Ongo<strong>in</strong>g Form<strong>at</strong>ion – <strong>the</strong> Word <strong>of</strong> God - addresses:<br />

• Know<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong> an objective way as an object <strong>of</strong> study (AM, nn. 61.109) ;<br />

• Pray<strong>in</strong>g it (Lectio div<strong>in</strong>a) (AM, nn. 16.127.150-151);<br />

• Above all, to experience it as <strong>the</strong> Word <strong>of</strong> Life th<strong>at</strong> reconciles us with God <strong>and</strong> our<br />

neighbour, guid<strong>in</strong>g us <strong>in</strong> ‘a necessary p<strong>at</strong>h <strong>for</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g a community <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />

<strong>and</strong> peoples’ (AM, nn. 16).<br />

We note th<strong>at</strong> when <strong>the</strong> Pope speaks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church (AM, nn. 99-131), despite <strong>the</strong><br />

pyramidal structure th<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> used <strong>and</strong> to which I shall come back, no group <strong>is</strong> exempt from exposure<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Word <strong>of</strong> God as Word <strong>of</strong> Life.<br />

• Families (AM, n. 45) ;<br />

• The elderly (AM, n. 47) ;<br />

• The youth (AM, nn. 61.63) ;<br />

• Adult literacy to provide access to <strong>the</strong> Scriptires (AM, n. 76) ;<br />

• a source <strong>for</strong> Reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, Justice <strong>and</strong> Peace (AM, nn. 95.150) ;<br />

• B<strong>is</strong>hops – a deeper underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t (AM, n. 103) ;<br />

• Priests (AM, n. 109) ;<br />

• Sem<strong>in</strong>arians (AM, n. 121) ;<br />

• C<strong>at</strong>ech<strong>is</strong>ts (AM, n. 127) ;<br />

• For <strong>the</strong> New Evangel<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion (AM, n. 161) ;<br />

The second element <strong>in</strong> Ongo<strong>in</strong>g Form<strong>at</strong>ion, highlighted <strong>in</strong> a strik<strong>in</strong>g way, <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> Social<br />

Doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church:<br />

• For women (AM, n. 59),<br />

• For youth (AM, n. 63),<br />

• For priests (AM, n. 109) ;<br />

• For laypeople <strong>in</strong> economic, social <strong>and</strong> political responsibilities (AM, n. 128) ;<br />

• For educ<strong>at</strong>ion (AM, n. 134.137).<br />

• It <strong>is</strong> an <strong>in</strong>d<strong>is</strong>pensable tool <strong>for</strong> educ<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g consciences <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> socio-political<br />

<strong>in</strong>volvement (AM, n. 22) <strong>in</strong> view <strong>of</strong> work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> common good (AM, n. 103);<br />

• At <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> truth which frees (AM, n. 24) ;<br />

• And an imper<strong>at</strong>ive source <strong>for</strong> liv<strong>in</strong>g Reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, Justice <strong>and</strong> Peace (AM, n. 95).<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>s<strong>is</strong>tence on <strong>the</strong> Word <strong>of</strong> God <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Social Doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church justifies <strong>the</strong><br />

(diocesan <strong>and</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ional) Comm<strong>is</strong>sions <strong>for</strong> Justice <strong>and</strong> Paix (<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegrity <strong>of</strong> Cre<strong>at</strong>ion) to better<br />

respond to someth<strong>in</strong>g, which s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> 1970s 14 , <strong>is</strong> recogn<strong>is</strong>ed as a constitutive element <strong>of</strong><br />

Evangel<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion – Justice <strong>and</strong> Peace. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> accepted by almost all M<strong>is</strong>sionary Sociéties <strong>and</strong><br />

Congreg<strong>at</strong>ions 15 !<br />

In th<strong>is</strong> sense, we can say th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pope strongly encuorages <strong>the</strong> local Churches <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Institutes <strong>of</strong> Consecr<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>and</strong> Apostolic life so th<strong>at</strong> we may cont<strong>in</strong>ue to try to educ<strong>at</strong>e every<br />

person (AM, nn. 22.74) <strong>in</strong> order th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church rema<strong>in</strong>s an architect <strong>of</strong> peace, an agent <strong>of</strong><br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> a herald <strong>of</strong> justice (AM, n. 23). Ongo<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>is</strong> to be <strong>of</strong>fered to all. Wh<strong>at</strong><br />

are we wait<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>? Wh<strong>at</strong> are our dioceses wait<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong>?<br />

Many <strong>of</strong> our Ep<strong>is</strong>copal Conferences <strong>in</strong> Africa have taken very clear positions on political <strong>and</strong><br />

socio-economic questions. From <strong>the</strong> documentary po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> view <strong>the</strong> commitment seems very<br />

much supported by our leaders. However, th<strong>is</strong> <strong>of</strong>ten does not transl<strong>at</strong>e <strong>in</strong>to concrete actions <strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> grassroots by <strong>the</strong> pastoral agents (orda<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>and</strong> non-orda<strong>in</strong>ed).<br />

2.6. Ecumenical <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terreligious dialogue … <strong>is</strong> vital<br />

At a time when we can be tempted to undervalue or neglect ecumenical <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terreligious<br />

dialogue, <strong>the</strong> Pope rem<strong>in</strong>ds us th<strong>at</strong> it <strong>is</strong> vital. Div<strong>is</strong>ion between Chr<strong>is</strong>tians <strong>is</strong> a sc<strong>and</strong>al th<strong>at</strong> weakens<br />

<strong>the</strong> witness <strong>of</strong> communion <strong>for</strong> which Jesus prayed (Jn 17:21) (AM, n. 91-94). Commitment to<br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace concerns all believ<strong>in</strong>g communities, whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y are longestabl<strong>is</strong>hed<br />

Chr<strong>is</strong>tians or new Churches, Muslims or followers <strong>of</strong> traditional religion. From th<strong>is</strong><br />

comes <strong>the</strong> urgent appeal to persevere <strong>in</strong> dialogue with Muslims (AM, n. 94).<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> dialogue takes different <strong>for</strong>ms 16 :<br />

<br />

<br />

<br />

<br />

Dialogue <strong>of</strong> life: people shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same realities <strong>of</strong> life as persons;<br />

Dialogue <strong>of</strong> (social) action: people collabor<strong>at</strong>e <strong>in</strong> order to improve social justice <strong>and</strong><br />

cre<strong>at</strong>e a better world <strong>for</strong> all;<br />

Dialogue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ological exchange: people share <strong>the</strong> richness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir spirituality <strong>and</strong><br />

thus allow <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs to appreci<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong>ir spiritual <strong>and</strong> human values. They also d<strong>is</strong>cover<br />

<strong>the</strong> similarities <strong>and</strong> differences between <strong>the</strong>ir religions <strong>and</strong> th<strong>is</strong>, sometimes, leads to<br />

soul-search<strong>in</strong>g questions.<br />

Dialogue <strong>of</strong> spiritual/religious experience: people rooted <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir faith reflect <strong>and</strong> pray<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r (not <strong>the</strong> same prayer though) <strong>for</strong> a particular <strong>in</strong>tention, e.g. <strong>the</strong> Ass<strong>is</strong>i<br />

experience <strong>of</strong> 1986; 2000 <strong>and</strong> 2011.<br />

L<strong>at</strong>er on, I shall make some remarks on African traditional religion. Wh<strong>at</strong>ever we do, let us<br />

acknowledge <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> ecumenical <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>terreligious dialogue if we take part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

actual m<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>of</strong> God <strong>and</strong> not <strong>in</strong> a m<strong>is</strong>sion th<strong>at</strong> we have cre<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>for</strong> ourselves.<br />

2.7. The sources <strong>of</strong> Reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, Justice <strong>and</strong> peace<br />

From some text, it <strong>is</strong> possible, accord<strong>in</strong>g to my read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>io<strong>in</strong>, to identify <strong>wh<strong>at</strong></strong> peope<br />

Benedict XVI considers as <strong>the</strong> sources from which we are to dr<strong>in</strong>k if we are to quench our thirst <strong>for</strong><br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>io<strong>in</strong>, justice <strong>and</strong> peace.<br />

<br />

For all: sacred Scripture, Tradition<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sacramental life (AM, n. 95).<br />

<br />

<br />

B<strong>is</strong>hops <strong>and</strong> priests: Exhort <strong>the</strong>m gently to daily prayer, to <strong>the</strong> worthy celebr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> sacraments, especially those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Euchar<strong>is</strong>t <strong>and</strong> Reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion (AM, n. 101).<br />

Priests: Given <strong>the</strong> complex situ<strong>at</strong>ions th<strong>at</strong> you encounter, I ask you to deepen your life<br />

<strong>of</strong> prayer <strong>and</strong> your ongo<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tellectual <strong>and</strong> spiritual <strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion. Become ever more<br />

familiar with sacred Scripture, <strong>the</strong> word <strong>of</strong> God which you daily medit<strong>at</strong>e upon <strong>and</strong><br />

expla<strong>in</strong> to <strong>the</strong> faithful. Grow <strong>in</strong> your knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> C<strong>at</strong>ech<strong>is</strong>m, <strong>the</strong> documents <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

mag<strong>is</strong>terium <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church’s social doctr<strong>in</strong>e. (AM, n. 109).<br />

Youth: we need to help young people to ga<strong>in</strong> confidence <strong>and</strong> familiarity with sacred<br />

Scripture so it can become a compass po<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> p<strong>at</strong>h to follow. (AM, n. 61).<br />

Youth: I encourage you to place Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> your lives through<br />

prayer, but also through <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> sacred Scripture, frequent recourse to <strong>the</strong><br />

sacraments, <strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church’s social teach<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> your active <strong>and</strong> enthusiastic<br />

particip<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> ecclesial groups <strong>and</strong> movements. Cultiv<strong>at</strong>e a yearn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> fr<strong>at</strong>ernity,<br />

justice <strong>and</strong> peace. (AM, n. 63).<br />

From <strong>the</strong> above <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r texts, we can identify 4 pr<strong>in</strong>icpal sources:<br />

<br />

<br />

<br />

<br />

Union with Chr<strong>is</strong>t: through personal <strong>and</strong> communal prayer;<br />

Familiarity with <strong>the</strong> Sacred Scriptures, studied <strong>and</strong> prayed;<br />

Knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church especially <strong>the</strong> Social teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church;<br />

A sacramental life (especially <strong>the</strong> Euchar<strong>is</strong>t <strong>and</strong> reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion);<br />

3. Can we go fur<strong>the</strong>r?<br />

It <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>evitable th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>al document, Africae <strong>munus</strong>, could not reflect all <strong>the</strong> richness <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Proposals <strong>and</strong> F<strong>in</strong>al Message <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Second African Synod. Pope Benedict XVI himself<br />

recogn<strong>is</strong>ed th<strong>at</strong>:<br />

‘I was impressed by <strong>the</strong> quality <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> speeches given by <strong>the</strong> Synod F<strong>at</strong>hers <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

who spoke <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> sessions. Their real<strong>is</strong>tic <strong>and</strong> far-sighted contributions demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />

Chr<strong>is</strong>tian m<strong>at</strong>urity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent. They were not afraid to face <strong>the</strong> truth <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y sought<br />

to reflect s<strong>in</strong>cerely on possible solutions to <strong>the</strong> problems fac<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir particular Churches<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Universal Church.’ (AM, n. 4).<br />

As he says <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Introduction to <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion:<br />

‘With th<strong>is</strong> document I w<strong>is</strong>h to make available <strong>the</strong> encourag<strong>in</strong>g fruits proposed by <strong>the</strong> Synod, <strong>and</strong> I<br />

<strong>in</strong>vite all people <strong>of</strong> good will to look to Africa with faith <strong>and</strong> love, to help it become – through Chr<strong>is</strong>t<br />

<strong>and</strong> through <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit – <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> salt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth (cf. Mt 5:13-14)’ (AM,<br />

n. 13).<br />

Never<strong>the</strong>less, <strong>the</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion ra<strong>is</strong>ed a few questions: 17 why were some fruits <strong>and</strong><br />

encouragements, reckoned opportune by <strong>the</strong> Assembly, not emphas<strong>is</strong>ed by <strong>the</strong> Pope <strong>in</strong> h<strong>is</strong><br />

Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion to <strong>the</strong> Church-Family <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> Africa? Does th<strong>is</strong> demonstr<strong>at</strong>e some d<strong>is</strong>agreement?<br />

17 Cf. Here I take <strong>in</strong>spir<strong>at</strong>ion here <strong>and</strong> elsewhere from <strong>the</strong> article by Franco Moretti, ‘Secondo S<strong>in</strong>odo africano / due<br />

Altern<strong>at</strong>ively, did <strong>the</strong> Pope <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> way w<strong>is</strong>h to <strong>in</strong>vite each local Church to make its ef<strong>for</strong>t <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

contextual<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion (AM, n. 14)? It’s up to you!<br />

3.1 The Image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church<br />

In <strong>the</strong> second chapter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong> Pope sets out <strong>the</strong> p<strong>at</strong>hways<br />

<strong>for</strong> reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace (AM, nn. 31-96). After emphas<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>at</strong>tentiveness to <strong>the</strong><br />

human person <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> metanoia - a genu<strong>in</strong>e conversion - (AM, nn. 32-41), he<br />

<strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>es <strong>the</strong> places <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong> society where reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace will be<br />

exerc<strong>is</strong>ed, <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> order:<br />

• The Family (AM, nn. 42-46) ;<br />

• The Elderly (AM, nn. 47-50) ;<br />

• Men (AM, nn. 51-54) ;<br />

• Women (AM, nn. 55-59) ;<br />

• Youth (AM, nn. 60-64) ;<br />

• Children (AM, nn. 65-68) ;<br />

It <strong>is</strong> not <strong>the</strong> same order which was followed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first chapter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> second part. Let us take a<br />

brief look <strong>at</strong> it.<br />

Even if Africae <strong>munus</strong> uses <strong>the</strong> term Church-Family <strong>of</strong> God from <strong>the</strong> First African Synod<br />

(1994) 18 , <strong>and</strong> also takes to itself <strong>the</strong> Paul<strong>in</strong>e image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Body <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t, (1 Cor 12), never<strong>the</strong>less<br />

when address<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> th<strong>is</strong> <strong>family</strong>, we red<strong>is</strong>cover a hierarchy close to ano<strong>the</strong>r image <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>church</strong>, a Hierarchical <strong>and</strong> Pyramidal Church. It beg<strong>in</strong>s with <strong>the</strong> B<strong>is</strong>hops (AM, n. 99-107) <strong>and</strong><br />

f<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>hes with laypeople (AM, n. 131). A compar<strong>is</strong>on 19 between <strong>the</strong> present<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same<br />

members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church-Family <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> John Paul II after <strong>the</strong> 1 st African Synod , <strong>and</strong><br />

those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Propositiones <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> F<strong>at</strong>hers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 2 nd Synod <strong>and</strong> Africae <strong>munus</strong> clearly demonstr<strong>at</strong>es<br />

<strong>the</strong> ecclesiologies <strong>of</strong> each document (from below or from above, depend<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> case)!<br />

persons, c<strong>at</strong>ech<strong>is</strong>ts <strong>and</strong> lay faithful <strong>of</strong> th<strong>at</strong> beloved cont<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>and</strong> its neighbour<strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong>l<strong>and</strong>s<br />

(AM, n. 1).<br />

It <strong>is</strong> true th<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong> some parts <strong>of</strong> Africa, even if <strong>the</strong>re are only two people, <strong>the</strong>y absolutely must<br />

have a chief. There <strong>is</strong> a story th<strong>at</strong> <strong>in</strong> some part <strong>of</strong> West Africa, someone fell <strong>in</strong>to a deep hole.<br />

While he was lament<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong> f<strong>at</strong>e, ano<strong>the</strong>r person fell <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> same hole. When <strong>the</strong> second began<br />

to lament, <strong>the</strong> first one told him, ‘Be quiet; I am <strong>the</strong> chief here because I arrived be<strong>for</strong>e you!’<br />

It <strong>is</strong> also true th<strong>at</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> challenges to take up are considerable, a cool head <strong>is</strong> required. A<br />

Ch<strong>in</strong>ese proverb says th<strong>at</strong> ‘a f<strong>is</strong>h rots by <strong>the</strong> head’. I do not deny th<strong>at</strong> we have to start somewhere<br />

<strong>and</strong> someone has to be <strong>in</strong> charge, not everyone. When everyone <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong> charge, ultim<strong>at</strong>ely no one <strong>is</strong>.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> bo<strong>at</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ks, <strong>the</strong> capta<strong>in</strong> <strong>is</strong> blamed, not h<strong>is</strong> crew, even if he says he was adv<strong>is</strong>ed to act as<br />

he did by <strong>the</strong> (even very competent) crew! Pope Bendict XVI sought, through th<strong>is</strong> ecclesiology, to<br />

<strong>in</strong>dic<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> B<strong>is</strong>hops are <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first place responsible!<br />

As he st<strong>at</strong>ed:<br />

12

To you (B<strong>is</strong>hops) <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first place belongs <strong>the</strong> task <strong>of</strong> seek<strong>in</strong>g unity, justice <strong>and</strong> peace s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

you have <strong>the</strong> responsibility <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> local Churches (AM, n. 104).<br />

However, be<strong>for</strong>e th<strong>is</strong>, he also underl<strong>in</strong>es:<br />

One can never be a Chr<strong>is</strong>tian alone. The gifts given by <strong>the</strong> Lord to each – b<strong>is</strong>hops, priests,<br />

deacons <strong>and</strong> religious, c<strong>at</strong>ech<strong>is</strong>ts <strong>and</strong> lay people – must all contribute to harmony,<br />

communion <strong>and</strong> peace <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church herself <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> society. (AM, n. 97).<br />

We know how much a given image <strong>of</strong> a consecr<strong>at</strong>ed person <strong>in</strong> Africa can be <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> problems<br />

<strong>for</strong> a number <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>tian communities. When <strong>the</strong> hierarchical order <strong>is</strong> reiter<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> mention<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Body <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t (AM, n. 99-131), i.e., th<strong>is</strong> hierarch<strong>is</strong>ed image <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church-<br />

Family <strong>of</strong> God, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Third Millennium, <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> Reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, Justice <strong>and</strong> Peace, we can<br />

<strong>the</strong>n beg<strong>in</strong> to worry! Wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>is</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>stake</strong> <strong>is</strong> too important <strong>for</strong> us to spend too long on <strong>the</strong> place we<br />

occupy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> pyramid. It <strong>is</strong> up to us to d<strong>is</strong>cover how we can avoid fall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> trap <strong>of</strong> a power<br />

which <strong>is</strong> not authority <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> People <strong>of</strong> God. The small ecclesial communities<br />

sometimes give a good example <strong>of</strong> it (but also less good). Be<strong>in</strong>g a leader/<strong>in</strong> charge <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>is</strong><br />

to serve as Chr<strong>is</strong>t did (Mark 9: 33-35) 20 ! Even <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> hierqrchical structure, <strong>the</strong> expect<strong>at</strong>ions are<br />

clearly spelt out. Without <strong>the</strong> personal <strong>and</strong> common fitness it <strong>is</strong> difficult to dem<strong>and</strong> justice <strong>and</strong><br />

peace from o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

3.2 Which voice are we hear<strong>in</strong>g?<br />

Benedict pra<strong>is</strong>es <strong>the</strong> boldness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Synod F<strong>at</strong>hers, but he did not take up all <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

propsitions <strong>and</strong> when he does so, he does not go to <strong>the</strong> full extent <strong>of</strong> <strong>wh<strong>at</strong></strong> <strong>the</strong>y proposed. There<br />

were significant modific<strong>at</strong>ions, quot<strong>at</strong>ions, referrals <strong>and</strong> om<strong>is</strong>sions. Let us exam<strong>in</strong>e some cases,<br />

without <strong>the</strong> pretension <strong>of</strong> know<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> why <strong>and</strong> where<strong>for</strong>e!<br />

Prop. 3. By her very n<strong>at</strong>ure, <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>is</strong> a<br />

Africa adopt an ambiguous <strong>at</strong>titude<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> adm<strong>in</strong><strong>is</strong>tr<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

scrupulous <strong>in</strong> carry<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>the</strong> traditional<br />

rites <strong>of</strong> reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong>y give little value<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Sacrament <strong>of</strong> Penance. There<strong>for</strong>e, a<br />

serious <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>-depth study should be done<br />

on <strong>the</strong> traditional African ceremonies <strong>of</strong><br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, such as "palaver" (where a<br />

Knowledgeable people who are converts<br />

from African Traditional Religion can guide<br />

<strong>the</strong> Church to an ever gre<strong>at</strong>er <strong>and</strong> more<br />

Prop. 47-48: The role <strong>of</strong> women <strong>is</strong><br />

essential:<br />

Acknowledgement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir gre<strong>at</strong><br />

contribution to <strong>the</strong> <strong>family</strong>, society <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

All o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>humane <strong>and</strong> unjust acts aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

women are equally condemned.<br />

The Synod F<strong>at</strong>hers propose:<br />

- <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>tegral human <strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> girls <strong>and</strong><br />

women (<strong>in</strong>tellectual, pr<strong>of</strong>essional, moral,<br />

spiritual, <strong>the</strong>ological, etc.);<br />

<strong>and</strong> women to f<strong>in</strong>d refuge <strong>and</strong> receive<br />

cooper<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church’s apostol<strong>at</strong>e.<br />

33 : The Synod members also emphasized<br />

<strong>the</strong> fact th<strong>at</strong> a gre<strong>at</strong> many Chr<strong>is</strong>tians <strong>in</strong><br />

Africa take an ambivalent stance towards<br />

<strong>the</strong> sacrament <strong>of</strong> Reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, whereas<br />

<strong>the</strong>se same Chr<strong>is</strong>tians are <strong>of</strong>ten very<br />

scrupulous <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> traditional rites <strong>of</strong><br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion. In order to ass<strong>is</strong>t <strong>the</strong><br />

C<strong>at</strong>holic faithful to walk an au<strong>the</strong>ntic p<strong>at</strong>h<br />

<strong>of</strong> metanoia <strong>in</strong> celebr<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g th<strong>is</strong> sacrament,<br />

through which <strong>the</strong> whole person <strong>is</strong><br />

refocused upon <strong>the</strong> goal <strong>of</strong> encounter with<br />

Chr<strong>is</strong>t, it would be helpful if <strong>the</strong> b<strong>is</strong>hops<br />

were to comm<strong>is</strong>sion a serious study <strong>of</strong><br />

traditional African reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

ceremonies <strong>in</strong> order to evalu<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

positive aspects <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir limit<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

These traditional pedagogical <strong>for</strong>ms <strong>of</strong><br />

medi<strong>at</strong>ion cannot <strong>in</strong> any way take <strong>the</strong><br />

3.2.2 Quot<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> cross-references<br />

The most quoted documents <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 226 footnotes are Pontifical <strong>and</strong> Roman documents 21 .<br />

• 59 from Benedict XVI ;<br />

• 28 from John-Paul II;<br />

• 5 from Paul VI;<br />

• 25 from encyclicals;<br />

• 8 from Roman Congreg<strong>at</strong>ions (<strong>of</strong> which 5 from <strong>the</strong> Doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Faith);<br />

• 4 from V<strong>at</strong>ican II (<strong>in</strong> cross-reference).<br />

It <strong>is</strong> a decidedly Roman <strong>and</strong> universal/C<strong>at</strong>holic document addressed to:<br />

…all people <strong>of</strong> good will to look to Africa with faith <strong>and</strong> love, to help it become – through<br />

Chr<strong>is</strong>t <strong>and</strong> through <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit – <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> salt <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> earth (cf. Mt<br />

5:13-14). (cf. AM, n. 13),<br />

<strong>and</strong> not only to Africa. One underst<strong>and</strong>s why, Benedict st<strong>at</strong>es:<br />

I see no need to dwell <strong>at</strong> length on <strong>the</strong> various socio-political, ethnic, economic or ecological<br />

situ<strong>at</strong>ions th<strong>at</strong> Africans face daily <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> cannot be ignored. Africans know better than<br />

anyone else how difficult, d<strong>is</strong>turb<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> even tragic <strong>the</strong>se situ<strong>at</strong>ions can very <strong>of</strong>ten be.<br />

(AM, n. 4).<br />

It would be difficult, even impossible, <strong>in</strong> spite <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dcesire <strong>of</strong> some critics, to give s<strong>at</strong><strong>is</strong>faction to<br />

all by quot<strong>in</strong>g writ<strong>in</strong>gs from African B<strong>is</strong>hops 22 ! It <strong>is</strong> important <strong>the</strong>re<strong>for</strong>e <strong>for</strong> local Ep<strong>is</strong>copal<br />

Conferences to pick up <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> read it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> light <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local situ<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> seek ways<br />

<strong>of</strong> implement<strong>in</strong>g it locally. You alone can do th<strong>at</strong> work.<br />

3.2.3 Om<strong>is</strong>sions<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> 57 Propositions made by <strong>the</strong> Synod F<strong>at</strong>hers <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> participants, 53 were repe<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>in</strong><br />

one way or ano<strong>the</strong>r, but <strong>the</strong> 4 th<strong>at</strong> were omitted ra<strong>is</strong>e questions <strong>for</strong> us. These are:<br />

• Proposition 16: The bra<strong>in</strong> dra<strong>in</strong>!<br />

• Proposition 21: peace (cf. <strong>the</strong> entire text); underst<strong>and</strong>able s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>is</strong><br />

on <strong>the</strong> subject.<br />

• Proposition 23: <strong>the</strong> Arms Trade<br />

• Proposition 27: Religious freedom (cf. AM, n. 94)<br />

Even if <strong>the</strong>re are no explicit references to <strong>the</strong>se Propositions, <strong>the</strong> ideas are presented elsewhere <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> text. Never<strong>the</strong>less, Propositions 16 <strong>and</strong> 23 are sensitive po<strong>in</strong>ts th<strong>at</strong> are worthy <strong>of</strong> <strong>at</strong>tention.<br />

The bra<strong>in</strong> dra<strong>in</strong> impover<strong>is</strong>hes Africa <strong>and</strong> enriches o<strong>the</strong>r countries, thus contribut<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong><br />

permanent marg<strong>in</strong>al<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> some communities <strong>in</strong> Africa. Th<strong>is</strong> also goes <strong>for</strong> cooper<strong>at</strong>ion between<br />

Churches <strong>for</strong> pastoral workers. These can also suffer from <strong>the</strong> bra<strong>in</strong> dra<strong>in</strong>. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, <strong>the</strong> Pope<br />

encourages B<strong>is</strong>hops:<br />

Without weaken<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sionary impulse ad gentes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> different countries, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>deed<br />

on <strong>the</strong> whole cont<strong>in</strong>ent, <strong>the</strong> b<strong>is</strong>hops <strong>of</strong> Africa should respond generously to <strong>the</strong> requests <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir confreres <strong>in</strong> countries lack<strong>in</strong>g voc<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong> ass<strong>is</strong>t <strong>the</strong> faithful deprived <strong>of</strong> priests. Th<strong>is</strong><br />

<strong>for</strong>m <strong>of</strong> cooper<strong>at</strong>ion, which should be governed by accords between <strong>the</strong> send<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

receiv<strong>in</strong>g Churches, becomes a concrete sign <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fruitfulness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sio ad gentes.<br />

Blessed by <strong>the</strong> Lord, <strong>the</strong> Good Shepherd (cf. Jn 10:11-18), it provides valuable support <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> new evangeliz<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>in</strong> countries <strong>of</strong> ancient Chr<strong>is</strong>tian tradition, (AM, n. 167).<br />

In view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lack <strong>of</strong> personnel <strong>in</strong> some Chr<strong>is</strong>tian communities, we should make a d<strong>is</strong>cernment on<br />

<strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong> promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> susta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g th<strong>is</strong> cooper<strong>at</strong>ion so th<strong>at</strong> it <strong>is</strong> not detrimental to <strong>the</strong>se lastmentioned<br />

23 . The body <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>tian Churches acknowledges th<strong>at</strong> M<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>is</strong> no longer one-way<br />

(from North to South or from West to East <strong>and</strong> South) but th<strong>at</strong> it <strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong> all directions <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> all are<br />

<strong>in</strong>vited to enter <strong>in</strong>to th<strong>is</strong> new dynamic <strong>and</strong> take part <strong>in</strong> God’s M<strong>is</strong>sion. Religious <strong>and</strong> M<strong>is</strong>sionary<br />

Institutes <strong>and</strong> some dioceses are already do<strong>in</strong>g so 24 . Never<strong>the</strong>less, <strong>in</strong> some cases, without a good<br />

prepar<strong>at</strong>ion 25 , <strong>and</strong> sometimes without a purific<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> motiv<strong>at</strong>ions, <strong>the</strong> people who are sent <strong>the</strong>re<br />

take root <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> receiv<strong>in</strong>g Churches <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> various reasons no longer w<strong>is</strong>h to return to Africa to<br />

serve <strong>in</strong> more modest conditions! It <strong>is</strong> not without importance to note th<strong>at</strong> after studies or a<br />

period <strong>of</strong> service <strong>in</strong> Europe or <strong>the</strong> United St<strong>at</strong>es, <strong>the</strong>y f<strong>in</strong>d it hard to return home.<br />

3.3. Neglected Po<strong>in</strong>ts?<br />

When <strong>the</strong> document refers to m<strong>is</strong>sionries, it could be said th<strong>at</strong> those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> past (AM, n.<br />

113; cf. already EIA, n. 33-34) <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>the</strong> African Church more than those <strong>of</strong> today. The<br />

contribution <strong>of</strong> African m<strong>is</strong>sionaries, serv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r African dioceses <strong>in</strong> a permanent way or as<br />

Fidei donum, or else are members <strong>of</strong> Institutes or Congrég<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ‘M<strong>is</strong>sio ad Gentes’ <strong>is</strong> not<br />

sufficiently taken <strong>in</strong>to account. Over to each local Church to see how to benefit morfe fully from<br />

<strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sionaries among <strong>the</strong>ir pastoral agents.<br />

3.4. A surpr<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g addition!<br />

One <strong>is</strong> amazed, <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion, to see <strong>the</strong> space given by Pope Benedict to<br />

<strong>the</strong> New Evangel<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion (AM, n. 159-171) <strong>in</strong> a document <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church-Family <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> Africa<br />

whose ma<strong>in</strong> conern <strong>for</strong> all <strong>is</strong> primary evangel<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion, dialogue, reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace.<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> addition opens <strong>the</strong> document to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>and</strong> rem<strong>in</strong>ds us th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart <strong>of</strong><br />

all evangél<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> encounter with <strong>the</strong> person <strong>of</strong> Jesus.<br />

Be<strong>in</strong>g Chr<strong>is</strong>tian <strong>is</strong> born not <strong>of</strong> an ethical dec<strong>is</strong>ion or a l<strong>of</strong>ty ideal, but an encounter with an<br />

event, a person, which gives life a new horizon <strong>and</strong> a dec<strong>is</strong>ive direction (AM, n. 165).<br />

Today we try to foster th<strong>is</strong> encounter by us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> means <strong>at</strong> our d<strong>is</strong>posal. Almost all our<br />

Congreg<strong>at</strong>ions or Institutes <strong>and</strong> B<strong>is</strong>hops’ Confrerences are on Internet sites, Facebook, twitter <strong>and</strong><br />

so on. We use <strong>the</strong> Internet, Skype, Messenger, Youtube, etc., to communic<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> I to<br />

evangel<strong>is</strong>e 26 . These means <strong>of</strong> communic<strong>at</strong>ion are <strong>in</strong>d<strong>is</strong>pensable. It <strong>is</strong> up to us to learn how to use<br />

<strong>the</strong>m to good effect.<br />

As <strong>the</strong> New Evangel<strong>is</strong>aiton passes through <strong>the</strong> evangel<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> evangel<strong>is</strong>er, if we live<br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace personally <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> our communities, we are tak<strong>in</strong>g part, even<br />

without us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> word, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> new evangel<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

more so as bro<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>and</strong> s<strong>is</strong>ters shar<strong>in</strong>g a common faith. We are all affected by <strong>the</strong> global<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>justice th<strong>at</strong> pushes people out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir home l<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> search <strong>of</strong> better opportunities <strong>of</strong> life. We<br />

are also aware <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> those who are victims <strong>of</strong> human traffick<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> widen<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

gap between rich <strong>and</strong> poor, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> d<strong>is</strong>appearance <strong>of</strong> some values <strong>in</strong> society. However <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

also signs <strong>of</strong> hope like a gre<strong>at</strong>er awareness <strong>of</strong> our responsibility <strong>for</strong> each o<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> desire <strong>for</strong><br />

human <strong>and</strong> political freedom, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> importance <strong>of</strong> care <strong>of</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion, etc. These signs <strong>of</strong> hope<br />

should not bl<strong>in</strong>d us to <strong>the</strong> challenges <strong>of</strong> today’s society. It <strong>is</strong> up to us to trans<strong>for</strong>m <strong>the</strong> challenges<br />

<strong>in</strong>to opportunities <strong>for</strong> a New Evangel<strong>is</strong><strong>at</strong>ion – “new <strong>in</strong> its ardour, method <strong>and</strong> expression” (AM n.<br />

165).<br />

4. Towards a conclusion<br />

Some publ<strong>is</strong>hers will pr<strong>in</strong>t o<strong>the</strong>r texts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Synod (Karthala <strong>in</strong> Par<strong>is</strong>, Paul<strong>in</strong>es Africa <strong>in</strong> Nairobi,<br />

K<strong>in</strong>shasa <strong>and</strong> elsewhere). Let us take advantage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m to complete <strong>wh<strong>at</strong></strong> may be lack<strong>in</strong>g. Over<br />

<strong>and</strong> above <strong>the</strong> appreci<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong> unease <strong>and</strong> critic<strong>is</strong>m th<strong>at</strong> one could have<br />

towards th<strong>is</strong> document, I take seriously <strong>the</strong> Pope’s st<strong>at</strong>ement when speak<strong>in</strong>g about Africans:<br />

I can assure <strong>the</strong>m th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church loves <strong>and</strong> respects Africa. In <strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> many<br />

challenges th<strong>at</strong> Africa seeks to address <strong>in</strong> order to become more <strong>and</strong> more a l<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

prom<strong>is</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> Church, like Israel, could easily fall prey to d<strong>is</strong>couragement; yet our <strong>for</strong>ebears<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> faith have shown us <strong>the</strong> correct <strong>at</strong>titude to adopt.… (AM, nn. 4-5).<br />

May <strong>the</strong>se words rem<strong>in</strong>d you <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> dignity <strong>of</strong> your call<strong>in</strong>g as children <strong>of</strong> God <strong>and</strong> members<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one, holy, c<strong>at</strong>holic <strong>and</strong> apostolic Church! Th<strong>is</strong> call<strong>in</strong>g cons<strong>is</strong>ts <strong>in</strong> radi<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a world<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten grown dark <strong>the</strong> clarity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> splendour <strong>of</strong> Jesus Chr<strong>is</strong>t, <strong>the</strong> true light<br />

which “enlightens everyone” (Jn 1:9). Chr<strong>is</strong>tians must give all men <strong>and</strong> women a desire <strong>for</strong><br />

God <strong>the</strong> F<strong>at</strong>her, <strong>the</strong> joy <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ive presence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. They are also called to<br />

cooper<strong>at</strong>e with <strong>the</strong> grace <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy Spirit, so th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> miracle <strong>of</strong> Pentecost may spread<br />

throughout <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>of</strong> Africa, <strong>and</strong> everyone may become ever more an apostle <strong>of</strong><br />

reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace. (AM, n. 176).<br />

The Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion cannot say everyth<strong>in</strong>g on all situ<strong>at</strong>ions. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, we should take seriously <strong>the</strong><br />

words <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Holy F<strong>at</strong>her <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first part when he says,<br />

The Synod made it possible to d<strong>is</strong>cern <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>cipal parameters <strong>of</strong> m<strong>is</strong>sion <strong>for</strong> an Africa th<strong>at</strong><br />

seeks reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice <strong>and</strong> peace. It falls to <strong>the</strong> particular Churches to transl<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong>se<br />

parameters <strong>in</strong>to “resolutions <strong>and</strong> guidel<strong>in</strong>es <strong>for</strong> action”. For it <strong>is</strong> “<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> local Churches th<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> specific fe<strong>at</strong>ures <strong>of</strong> a detailed pastoral plan can be identified – goals <strong>and</strong> methods,<br />

<strong>for</strong>m<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> enrichment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people <strong>in</strong>volved, <strong>the</strong> search <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> necessary resources –<br />

which will enable <strong>the</strong> proclam<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t to reach people, mould communities, <strong>and</strong> have<br />

18

a deep <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>c<strong>is</strong>ive <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g Gospel values to bear <strong>in</strong> [African] society <strong>and</strong><br />

culture. (AM, n. 14).<br />

To conclude, I take <strong>for</strong> my own <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> some Bibl<strong>is</strong>ts <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ologians who took part <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Synod. For Fr. Paul<strong>in</strong> Poucouta, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Exeges<strong>is</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institut C<strong>at</strong>holique de Yaoundé:<br />

All <strong>in</strong> all, <strong>for</strong> Benedict XVI, repe<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> words <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Synod F<strong>at</strong>hers, reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion, justice<br />

<strong>and</strong> peace are only possible when Chr<strong>is</strong>tians write <strong>the</strong> Gospel <strong>of</strong> love <strong>and</strong> life <strong>in</strong> letters <strong>of</strong><br />

daily commitment <strong>and</strong> testimony, <strong>and</strong> if necessary, <strong>in</strong> letters <strong>of</strong> blood. (AM, 34) 27 .<br />

For two Jesuits who teach <strong>at</strong> Abidjan, one <strong>in</strong> Social Ethics, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> Exeges<strong>is</strong>,<br />

By <strong>the</strong> relevance <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> d<strong>is</strong>course <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> boldness <strong>of</strong> h<strong>is</strong> prophetic appeals, Pope Benedict<br />

XVI entrusts <strong>the</strong> Church <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent with a control panel call<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> a dem<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong><br />

exhilar<strong>at</strong><strong>in</strong>g Chr<strong>is</strong>tian witness to <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>ure <strong>of</strong> Chr<strong>is</strong>t 28 .<br />

The Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong>fers us <strong>the</strong> seeds, not ask<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> its fruit right away. It <strong>is</strong> up to us to plant <strong>the</strong>se<br />

seeds, to w<strong>at</strong>er <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> care <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>m until <strong>the</strong> tree bears <strong>the</strong> desired fruits <strong>of</strong> reconcili<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

justice <strong>and</strong> peace. It <strong>is</strong> unth<strong>in</strong>kable to die <strong>of</strong> hunger when <strong>the</strong>re <strong>is</strong> bread on <strong>the</strong> table!<br />

5. Questions <strong>for</strong> d<strong>is</strong>cussion<br />

i. Wh<strong>at</strong> do you appreci<strong>at</strong>e <strong>of</strong> about <strong>the</strong> Exhort<strong>at</strong>ion Africae <strong>munus</strong>? Why?<br />

<br />

need to be deepened, consolid<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> your local Church?<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong> light does Africae Munus shed on <strong>the</strong>m? Wh<strong>at</strong> do we plan to do about <strong>the</strong>m?<br />
