statistics. According to the reports of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) <strong>and</strong> other international<br />

agencies, about 70 per cent of Nigeria’s 140 million people live on less than US$1 a day. The illiteracy rate st<strong>and</strong>s<br />

at 51 per cent with a wide gender disparity of 62.5 per cent literate males <strong>and</strong> 39.5 per cent literate females. Sixtytwo<br />

per cent of the estimated 7.3 million children of school age who are not receiving any formal education are<br />

girls. Infant mortality generally st<strong>and</strong>s at 98 per 1,000 live births <strong>and</strong> at 198 per 1,000 live births for children below<br />

five years. Maternal mortality is 800 per 100,000 live births. An estimated 4 million people are living with HIV/AIDs.<br />

The average life expectancy st<strong>and</strong>s at 43.3 years. Nigeria was ranked 158th (out of 174 countries) on the Human<br />

Development Index (HDI).
