INDICATOR 10 – SUSTAINABLE
OR RENEWABLE ENERGY
SUPPLY
PURPOSE
This indicator measures the
technologies installed in Landcom
projects which supplement
conventional energy supply through
reliance on sustainable or renewable
resources. Landcom aims to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions from urban
developments and to promote
innovative and sustainable energy
technologies.
TARGET
Landcom’s Energy Smart Communities
Policy sets the following minimum
targets:
– All dwellings are to be fitted with gas
boosted solar water heaters sufficient
to meet 60% of annual hot water
requirements except where there is
no gas or where solar panels are not
appropriate (by June 2008).
– All projects greater than 500
dwellings (or projects with a
commercial component or town
centre) include a percentage of on-site
or off-site renewable energy supply
(by June 2008).
RESULTS
44% of dwellings (99 out of 226) had
gas boosted solar hot water systems.
This is equivalent to an estimated
66 tonnes of greenhouse gas savings.
This is a significant improvement
from last year when no dwellings
had this feature.
Apart from solar water heating,
no projects delivered in 2003/2004
included any other form of renewable
energy supply. All projects delivered
in 2003/2004 that are more than 500
lots were planned before the adoption
of Landcom’s Energy Smart
Communities Policy.
Although no projects incorporated
renewable energy supply this year,
a number of projects currently in
planning may include an element of
renewable energy on a project-wide
level. They are:
– Rouse Hill Regional Centre: wind
turbines.
– Prince Henry Hospital: integrated
urban wind turbines.
– Second Ponds Creek: solar panels.
– South Hoxton Park: solar panels.
CHALLENGES
Landcom plans to form partnerships
with energy services companies and to
find solutions for financing, ownership
and maintenance of renewable energy
plants in future projects.
ACTIONS FOR 2004/2005
Landcom will:
– Continue to incorporate renewable
energy into planning of its projects
where feasible.
