HOME DEMONSTRATION AGENTS News of Important Results Being Accomplished in the Various States THE office of THE FARMER'S W IFE might well be called the whispering gallery of the farm world for here, those who listen in, may catch clear echoes of what is going on in the rural districts of every state in the Union. Among these echoes are very substantial and inspiring items of news which come to us, through the Home Demonstration workers of the various states. It is impossible to put into one sentence or a dozen, a statement covering the work done by these home demonstration agents. It is necessary for them to be as efficient and as all-around in their ability as the successful mistress of a farm home who, for her family of four, six or eight, must know how to cut, fit and sew—cook—lau rider— keep the home clean and well furnished—nurse the sick—train growing children—make and "raise" garden —manage the poultry yard—be on good terms with the dairy—look after store-cellar and pantry—be a neighbor of the right kind—a good mother—a bully wife—and' all the rest of it. Indeed, from THE FARM- ER'S WIFE point of observation we believe that the home demonstration agent has to go the trained farm mother one better, and have right on tap reliable information about any and every new way of working which the farm woman wishes to understand and learn but which she has not yet had time or opportunity to master! For this reason, news from these indefatigable workers whom the State Agricultural Colleges train and send into the field , is more than worthwhile and we are happy to pass on a few significant items to our great army of readers most, of whom know at first hand how to value these trained and willing helpers. Toys for Miners ' Children MISS INEZ M. HOBART, Assistant State Home Demonstration Leader, North Dakota Agricultural College, sent us a pretty story from a clothing school at Chapin, N. D., a little community near Bismarck. The women who attended the school are all miners wives and their homes are so small that only a few couW work at a time. It was necessary for the Home Demonstration Agent to go out for a whole day and plan to take one group in the morning and another in the afternoon. They all met at noon for lunch so this gave the women a social time each week as well as giving the help that they needed in clothing. This school has been meeting every Saturday since the first of November and the interest is gaining, in fact there is a waiting list. Here is the way the children of this district were outfitted with toys at Christmas time. The agent who worked with the women at the Chapin school sent this story to Miss Hobart: The meeting on December 20 was spent making toys out of cloth that the ladies had at home. The ladies in this school decided that they would like to make up toys for the children out of the remains of old coats and dresses that they had at home. The Home Demonstration Agent got the patterns for various sized elephants, dogs, cats, dolls, teddybears and so forth and together with the women met at the home of Mrs. Ed. Keenan. The house was soon turned into a Santa Claus shop. Wonderful dogs were made out of old cloth fur coats, cats out of white baby coats, elephants out of grey flannel covered with blankets of scarlet satin which had lined a coat, teddy bears out of fuzzy coat cloth and so on. At the end of the day, a variety of animals were on hand to help add to the joy of Christmas for the children. One of the women said, "Look at this lovely dog that I made! i could not have bought one like it in the store for less than $3.00." It was made out of a piece of an old cloth fur coat and stuffed with the stuffings from an old muff. Homemade Dryer Works JUNE our Clackamas County Home IK Demonstration Agent gave a canning and drying demonstration at the Gladstone Chautauqua. Miss Ethel Baker of Oswego attended those demonstrations where the cold-pack method of canning was used and the home cook-stove drier was discussed as to construction and method of operation. Miss Baker is an semi-invalid, due to infantile paralysis a number of years ago.
