NEARLY every woman rather enjoys-washing
if—and what a big
."if" it is!—she can wash without
half killing herself carrying and lifting
heavy vessels of water. Laundry
labor in itself is not unpleasant.
The two illustrations given on this page
show an arrangement of equipment which
will do away with practically all the carrying
of water. The equipment is not complicated
and can be installed by any wideawake
man who has a simple, fundamental
knowledge of tools and machinery—
and most farm men have this knowledge.
In ' the illustration, you will see that a
length of hose is attached by ordinary
hose-attachment to the pump, which may
be either inside or outside. By this simple
contrivance the wash boiler, on the
laundry stove, is filled without any lifting
and lugging of pails of water.
A faucet at one end of the bottom of the
boiler, allows the water to be drawn off—
some more heavy work eliminated—and
every country woman will agree with me
that every ounce of weight, more or less,
counts.
Between the washing machine and stove
stands a table on good casters. If these
casters are kept clean and oiled, they will
not balk when you need them most. This
table is exactly the height of the laundry
stove. When it is necessary to move the
boiler, shove the table up to the stove,
slide boiler on to table, roll table back to
washing machine—or to the slop sinkmore
lifting and stepping saved! If the
table is zinc-covered, there will be no
scrubbing to do. This table will serve
many convenient purposes, between wash
plumbing, are still quite within the reach
of most farm homes.
They are made of impervious-materia!
so that they are perfectly sanitary, do not
absorb grease and dirt, and can be readily
put in a condition of perfect cleanliness.
The illustration shows two tubs, divided
by a solid partition and equipped with a
drain pipe that conducts the water into
the slop sink. There is a drain pipe, too,
as you will see, to carry from the pumpsink
and these pipes unite and carry the
water outside where a sloping boanTconduit
takes the water still farther on its
course to ground covered with coarse
gravel. This gravel prevents the accumulation
of puddles which are objectionable
for several reasons.
Most of the devices here shown are inexpensive
and are the results of thought and
planning instead of a large expenditure of
money. The hose attachment, the hose,
the faucet on the washboiler, the bench
on casters, casters on the wash machine,
are within the reach of anyone who can
drive a nail, put in a screw and wield a
monkey wrench. There are even women
who can do these things and I know some
of them are reading these words and will
bear me out in what I say.
Now a word about the ironing board.
Any old board, covered with pieces of
blanket and old sheets, is emphatically
not good enough for the woman who has
heavy ironings to do. Have you ever
thought of using a table instead of a
board resting on chair backs, wobbly, narrow
and never quite right?
The kitchen table makes a good ironing
board. It should be high enough to make
it easy to use and not
require bending over.
When we add an uncomfortable
position to
long standing, to the
handling of heavy irons
and the clothes, we are
cruel to ourselves, wickedly
too, if it is possible
to change matters
