Instructor In Millinery, Home Economics Division, University of Minnesota left-over hat is one item to which THE every woman should give her most careful consideration when planning a season's outfit (whether for fall or for spring) since the purchase of a new hat —at present prices—means the cutting of a tremendous hole in the monthly budget. And consideration of the left-over hat means renovation of its materials. The very first step to take towards the renewing of a used piece of velvet is to remove all threads and brush the velvet with a soft bristle brush, that as much of the dust as possible may be removed before the process of steaming is began. Place two bricks about two inches apart so as to permit a space for the handle of the flat iron to be. placed between them. If you have no bricks take a deep pan and place therein the -iton—handle down and flat surface upward, or if such a pan is not in your kitchen outfit, just turn the iron on its side on a table. This last method, however, requires a bit more skill in the pulling of the velvet over the edge of the iron. Any iron may be used but if an electric iron is available its use is much to be preferred as it does not re- First Put the Iron in Position f or Steaming and Then Place Damp Cloth and velvet in Position f or Gentle Brushing to Remove Dirt quire reheating and is easily regulated. After the iron (hot) has been placed in position, spread over it some four thicknesses of cotton cloth—old sheeting or pillow cases will do—which have been dipped in warm water and well wrung out. Over this wet cloth put just one thickness of dry cloth that no water may soak through the velvet; Draw the velvet over the iron brushing constantly with a soft bristle brush while doing so and always in the direction of the nap, never against it. It is Draw Velvet over Steaming Cloth while You Brush it. If You Handle the Feather Right You Can Curl the Flues Without Breaking very easy to determine the direction of the nap by running the fingers over the velvet. If the nap remains smooth the fingers are going in the right direction; if the surface roughens the fingers are running against the nap. In following these directions be sure to let tne steam do the work. This is an added reason for having the dry covering over the dampened cloth, for most persons, when first steam- .ning velvet, press down too hard with the brush and many times spoil the goods by getting it thoroughly wet instead of leaving the work of cleaning for the steam. All of this may sound as if it were a long process but in reality it takes but a moment or two, for the velvet must be passed over the steam before the strength of it is exhausted. You will find that most old velvets are tion of the nap and not against it. Begin at the left of the strip of velvet and take long, light strokes with the iron, never allowing the outer edge of the iron (or the. edge farther from the body) to touch the velvet. By holding this outer edge from.the velvet all streaks will he avoided. After the iron has been taken the full width of the ironing board return to the starting point and iron another strip entirely across the board, overlapping the first strip a very little to avoid a streak in the goods. The velvet is then turned to the right side and the same process is repeated. Unless the velvet has been very badly treated in the wearing it will come back to life as good as new and may be used over again, not once but many times. Plush may be steamed in the same manner as velvet but it should not be ironed as the nap of plush is very heavy and should be upstanding. All velveteens of light color may be washed in tepid suds made from good white soap. Follow the washing with good rinsing but never wring the goods as wringing will crease. After the velveteen is dry brush it well with a stiff brush to raise the nap. Black or dark velveteens and velvet ribbons should be steamed but never ironed. Grease spots may be removed from dark velvets by rubbing the spots with a dark cloth saturated with turpentine. And now for the satins. Black satin may be made like new by sponging lightly with a solution made of one teaspoonful of borax to one quart of water. When very much better looking after having been ironed, or, mirrored, to use our term. To do this, velvet is turned on the wrong side—after having been steamed—and the iron is run lightly over the velvet. Here, again, be sure to send the iron in the directhe satin is nearly dry, press lightly on the wrong side with a moderately hot iron, first having placed the satin on a heavilypadded ironing board. Ribbons are very hard to handle and great care should be taken with them. The only ribbon that ever should be treated to an actual bath is the wash taffeta. This may be put in a basin and washed as is any other soft cloth. After it has been smoothed out and wrapped in a clean, white cloth that some of the water may be absorbed, it is laid between, two other clean, white cloths and pressedwith a hot iron. Other ribbons should be cleaned with gasoline or some good cleaning fluid and then steamed, as pressing stiffens them. It is impossible to bring back the color to colored ribbons after they have been sunburned but if these ribbons are but slightly faded the color may be restored, in part at least, by sponging them with chloroform, which, it is hardly needless to mention , should be done in the open air.
